2.5 stars I took a friend here for her birthday. I will admit I was less than excited about trying it, being heavily lactose intolerant and all, but we choose our friends and they choose their birthday dinner locations. The restaurant itself is very chic inside. Like a cool kids 1940's coffee shop, open only at night. You order at the counter and then they bring you your food. Other reviewers have complained, but for me this is a genius innovation that cuts a lot of the slack and "waiting impatiently for food while hungry" time off the experience. The beer is good. The service is cool, good and friendly. My sandwich was, eh, not so good. The birthday girl's grilled cheese did look amazing. Me, I was trying to be good to my stomach so I ordered a cheese-free sammy. At the grilled cheese restaurant. Kind of like ordering steak at a seafood house -- a real gamble. I had, basically, a turkey, avocado and bacon club. The main problem was the turkey. It tasted very chemically and processed. It was yuck and I took it out of the sandwich. The rest of the sandwich was fine although the oil/butter it was fried in didn't taste so great on the bread. All in all kind of a bleh food experience. Highly overrated. Think, dive bar, not restaurant. It's just grilled cheese sandwiches. They use many different kinds of cheeses and meat combos that make it unique but it's really nothing special. The tator tots that everyone rave about is really just regular deep fried tator tots! They have a good variety of beers on tap. The place is small and seating is very limited. The reason I wanted to go to this place was because I saw the entire menu was grilled cheese sandwiches. I love grilled cheese sandwiches specifically when drinking. My bartender not only took my order, but proceeded to make the grilled cheese right before my eyes on the grill behind the bar. There were 4 breads to choose from, 9 kinds of cheeses, and more than 30 "toppings" that include meats, veggies, and other stuff. You can pick whatever you want. You will probably spend $7-$10 for the sandwich. You can add tater tots too which for some reason people love. But oh...it is a bar too... The beer selection is great. It appeared they had 24 beers on tap. No traditional tap handles, just a big steel cooler with black taps and magnets holding up laminated beer names and mason jars catching the spillover. There were also an additional 18 beers in bottle/can form. Beer prices are not cheap with the lowest cost option being around $5 for a pint. The average price (yeah I did the calculation) of a draft is $7.52 for a pint. You can get a 16oz pint, a 9oz goblet, or a 4oz mini sample, so you don't have to drop mad cash. I asked them to recommend an IPA and they told me the blah blah for $9 a pint was delicious. After I ordered and started sipping on it I found out there was a tiny happy hour for $4 (2 beers are $4/pint from 5pm-7pm, that is $1.50 off the regular price). I would have appreciated the recommendation with the additional info that there was a happy hour special. The bar itself is very small, there are about 12 bar stools, 9 tiny booths and a couple cafeteria tables by the front window. You order your drinks at the bar no matter where you are sitting. They play the Turner Classic Movies channel on the TV, so you get black & white movies, not sports. I was there on a Friday for Happy Hour and the place was just about empty. You can also get beer to go in single pint serve mason jars (sealed & $1 deposit) which is weird because they don't fill growlers, who gets 1 beer to go? I'll be going back for another grilled cheese soon and maybe grab one expensive beer before heading down the street to a more exciting happy hour. I am a little obsessed with this hipster place. I have been a few times for their various grilled cheese and tater tot combinations. Spacebar is extremely vegetarian friendly offering up choices like vegetarian meatloaf grilled cheese and soy chkn grilled cheese. If you're feeling fat or want to be, order up the tatchoes that are a plate of super crisp tots with nacho ingredients of your choosing such as cheese, sour cream, onions, etc. Because their menu consists of essentially two items (grilled cheese or tater tots) it's not the place to be for variety but my philosophy is always to do a few things and do them well and Spacebar is killing it. The beer choices are also super awesome. The Hardywood Sidamo Coffee Stout is the stuff that dreams are made of! Be prepared to drop some money though, as it isn't cheap but what is around here? I checked out this place last night with a friend who wanted to check it out before he returned to Chicago. The bartender was wearing some in your face shirt about being a local. Let's just say I'm not a fan of people that need their t-shirts to do the talking. As another Yelper noted, it's full of the suburbian wanna-be hipsters, which I also found laughable. I liked the beer selection, but if you're gonna keep the place so dark, must you have the menu microscopic as well? Back to the bartender, who was not young, hip or attractive, and a bit surly for a bartender, and also ON HIS PHONE THE WHOLE TIME WHILE TAKING OUR ORDER. When we left, my friend asked for his card back (he was still on his phone btw). First, he said he hadn't given it him, then he gave him the wrong credit card back! The reviews are not lying - this place is awesome! I only wish I had tried this sooner, as I could have been enjoying all this yummy goodness for months now. They have a large variety of grilled cheese sandwiches to meet all kinds of tastes, and if some reason you can't find something you like, you can make your own. Thick slices of bread, toasted just right, filled with tons of cheese and whatever else you want. They have a large selection of beer on tap and a variety of microbrews. I am in love with this place. It is very small and seating can some times be limited, but I have never experienced bad service. Seats open up frequently you just have to keep your eyes open. This also allows you to mingle with people at the bar. Get active people! Food is always great! I mean grilled cheese and tots! How can you beat that? This place might seem loud and dark to a few customers but it's definitely an experience and one that I like to frequent often with my wife. I came here with family around the holidays. We came early on a Friday night hoping to beat the late crowd. My sister-in-law initially tried to bring her infant baby in but we were quickly turned away (it's quite literally no one under 21 admitted). So, after putting the baby down at home we tried again. I was surprised that the bar wasn't more crowded since we came back later in the evening. We got a booth and ordered drinks and food at the bar. They have pretty much unlimited grilled cheese options and a huge beer selection. I was a little overwhelmed by the beer menu since they just had the beer names with no description of taste. We all tried a different grilled cheese and shared an order of tot-chos (tots with cheese). Everything was yummy--especially the tots. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar and liked that it wasn't too noisy or crowded. I will certainly be back. read more

Love this place, and I love that I live so close to it now! Originally came here to meet up with some guy I met on Tinder almost a year ago. I had driven past Spacebar many times, but hadn't found an opportunity to visit. We both wanted to find an arcade, but Spacebar popped up because they have, like, one arcade game in the back. I'm saving up my quarters because it's usually occupied. Upon entering, I was grateful that they checked ID. Nothing ruins a night like babies at a bar. (I also lowkey wanted to know how old my date really was.) We shared a plate of loaded totchos with ranch, at the bartender's suggestion. (My date didn't like ketchup. *Almost* a dealbreaker.) Then we judged each other on the brews we had picked out. (He liked strong IPAs, I like ciders/ Belgian Whites. Both are well represented here.) I forgot what sandwiches we ordered, but I distinctly remember debating with myself if it was too early to sneak a bite of this guy's food because it looked so good. As a grilled cheese purist, I need to point out that their menu doesn't exactly feature traditional grilled cheese...it features *sandwiches* that have amazing cheese in them. That is literally my only gripe. The beer is cold, the food is hot and perfectly greasy, and it's a great space to meet up. Everything that made me a former regular at Galaxy Hut applies here: - Outstanding microbrew selection - Friendly, knowledgeable staff - Great atmosphere (usually some good alt/punk music playing, and I've never seen any sports on the TV except for 1 or 2 times when someone specifically requested it... this is a good thing in my book) - Good bar food (I prefer Spacebar's grilled cheese-centric menu in this regard) Like Galaxy Hut, this is the real deal in terms of a microbrew bar. I love spacebar! I was there yesterday and the bartender/main employee of the evening was so kind. I'm not a big beer drinker, and asked for his suggestions for a lighter beer or cider from their broad list. He gave me a few samples- and I was surprised how much I liked all of them! I absolutely LOVED the sour beer (very grapefruit) I ended up getting. I took one star off only because I came with a group, and it seemed to take a long time to get our sandwiches. I'll be back though! I love the variety, and our group always gets the tater tots when we are together. How it works: really at all points during the week, you have to be 21+ to be there. You seat yourself, go up to the bar and order your food/drinks at the bar. You walk your own drink back to the table, if they'll bring your food to you. They'll generally start a tab for you when you walk up to the bar. Not the fault of the staff, but parking is very limited. You may be better off with some street parking on. A side road. read more

so simple. so good. i tried to come here last summer with a friend for lunch who had this on her nova eating bucket list but they are only open in the evenings. glad i made it back though because this place is no frills and just awesome! there is open seating; a long bar and about 8 tables to the side. you order up at the bar and then sit anywhere. they pretty much serve three things here: beer, grilled cheese sandwiches, and tots (cue napoleon dynamite)! everything of course can be fancied up. grilled cheese with a variety of toppings from kim chi to avocado to pulled pork. you can also add these same toppings to your tots and they turn into "tatchos". mind blown. we already ate a little before we got here so we split 3 sandwiches between 6 people and then shared a plate of plain tots. we ordered a basic cheese on multigrain, pulled pork, and pastrami. all of which were delicious. they have a special flavor of the night/week too. i saw a photo online of one with mac and cheese inside. waiting for them to bring that one back! it's definitely a little hole in the wall/gem in the city of falls church. read more

I can honestly say that this place made me like beer. Usually beer is not my thing, but their selection is so fantastic that I have never had a bad one here. The drink menu changes frequently, but it's always easy to find a new favorite. The food is solely variations of grilled cheese- you pick your cheese, meat and other toppings and they grill it. Simple & yummy. Extra points go to them because they offer TOTS as a side! Spacebar is on the small side with a bar that stretches the length of the place and tables on the opposite side. However, it still manages to seat a good amount of people and I've come close, but never actually had a problem finding a seat. I wouldn't plan on going with a group larger than 4 people. I LOVE that they play classic movies on the TV over the bar and the music selection in the background is always good. Almost all of the staff is knowledgeable and friendly and are usually pretty helpful in suggesting beers. I really can't think of any negatives to mention. This place is fantastic! read more

This was honestly one of the best discoveries I've ever made in Falls Church. This bar/restaurant was tucked back from broad st with little parking but it was more than worth it. There were three of us drinking/eating and it was a great time! The drinks are cheap, more than 30 beers on the menu and so many different combinations of sandwiches. If you're still not seeing what you want you can make a custom sandwich choosing meats, cheeses, bread and toppings. Short haired, dyed blonde in a maroon sweater and a ginger beard in a off-brand fireball shirt that says "magnaball". Here for over an hour and only was acknowledged once. The second time they came to tell me they had no bacon 30 mins after I ordered my food. The blonde has walked by us at least 17 times and has not offered a second beer even though ours has been empty for 20 mins now. Ginger beard who wasn't the one to take our order in the first place but was the one that waited 30 mins to tell me they had no bacon has been by 5 times and seen empty beer glasses and haven't offered another. Although ginger beard did get a tip cause he offered tots at the end to make up for not having bacon which let's be honest is not a make up but I'll take it. Terrible customer service. read more

Going to the gym consistently for a week probably won't help me burn off what I consumed at Spacebar this past weekend...but was it worth it? Hell to the yes. So, to all you avid healthy eaters out there, I'd suggest skipping Spacebar. And if you go just to order one of their side salads...well, just know I'll be here judging you. I like how Spacebar sticks to one thing, but offers a variety of options. They serve grilled cheese sandwiches + beer + tots. Pretty simple, right? Yeah..minus the fact that they offer about 293409234 different takes on these sandwiches and an extensive beer list. Either create your own grilled cheese sandwich or pick one of the 20 listed on the menu. They also offer the beers in different sizes. The tots are nice & crispy. Perfectly prepared as a side item. Or you can go all out and order a basket of totchos. Their take on tots x nachos. I've tried two of their sandwiches (the roast beef/horseradish mayo/cheddar & the pastrami/kraut/Russian dressing/swiss). Both were very well executed with the bread being perfectly grilled and you can taste the buttery goodness that was infused in the toast. The cheese is oozing over the meat inside of the sandwich, which melted cheese is always a win in my books. The meat also has great flavor and isn't overpowered by the cheese or sauce. The sauce just adds the perfect kick and brings the whole sandwich together. Pair the sandwich with some tots and a nice cold beer. Just be sure to not wear anything that restricts your stomach area from expanding. Sweat pants are always good. The place itself is pretty small - has a few booths lined up against the left side of the space and the bar/kitchen/bar stools are on the right. Parking lot is extremely limited, so most likely will need to find a spot across the street. read more
