Definitely a fan of Spanky's Grille! Decided to stop here for lunch with our party of 10. Food was excellent, service was fast and extremely friendly and prices were awesome! I had the clam strips with sweet potato fries and hush puppies. The clam strips and hush puppies were fried well. Crisp but very tender inside. The sweet potato fries had a good flavor but were a little overlooked. Someone ordered the Famous Viking burger next to us and all the teenagers in our group couldn't stop ogling and drooling. They've begged for days to go back so they could try a Viking. To quote my 12 year old, "These are the best chili cheese fries I've ever had!" Overall, the atmosphere is a fun family-friendly small diner with great food, excellent prices and wonderful personable service. We'll be back next year! read more

If you're looking for fast, cheap, and delicious then Spanky's is the way to go! We liked it so much, went had multiple lunches here in one week! The cheeseburgers and chili cheese fries were awesome and then the next time, we got corn dogs and chili dogs which were also great. They run specials, serve beer and the staff is super friendly. We weren't quite brave enough to try the gator but was really impressed with the fast food/ diner feel that serves alcohol. I had a the NC BBQ combo with fries and drink ($5.99), my husband had the footlong italian sausage combo with fries and a drink($6.99), my younger two children had the hotdogs ($0.69), and my oldest had a BBQ sandwich. We order a basket of fries for all the children to share. For less than $25, we were able to feed our family and the food was very good. This place is the epitome of dive on the surface. With just a few seats and a short order environment I didn't really know what to expect. The owner, who was working the register, really sold the friendly atmosphere from the get go. While the menu is mostly inexpensive, except the cheese sticks - I never figured out why they were so pricey. I got the Monkey Butt burger which is basically a bacon cheeseburger but the catch is a bottle of either mango hot sauce or ghost pepper sauce is included in the price. So you basically get a souvenir with your meal. I tried their ghost pepper sauce and was happy with the heat and flavor. The burger itself was a little overdone but the meat still melted in your mouth. It wasn't the best burger I've ever had but it was good. If you go you have to try the funnel fries for dessert. If your in the outer banks and looking for an escape from the expensive sea food joints, definitely try Spanky's. I'll be going back when we come back next year. read more

Spanky's is a must for lunch! Every time we have eaten there, we see guys from the utility companies and other contractors showing up to grab a bite. They serve a nice variety of mostly sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs etc. And very inexpensive! We like to sit outside at the picnic tables and watch the traffic whiz by on the bypass. When I was a kid, my family came to the OBX every year, and now that we're adults, my siblings and I are starting the trend again. We got one of those coupon books and saw that Spanky's had won all these awards for their cheeseburgers, and I said to my family, "We have to try this." The first time we tried going, unfortunately, was right after a tropical storm, so it was closed (probably due to a power outage.) Luckily, I was with my brother and sister a little later in the week, and I convinced them to come here for lunch. I had the double cheeseburger, my sister had the crab cake combo, and my brother had the special "Monkey Burger" which came with a bottle of the Monkey Butt hot sauce. Also, we ordered a large basket of the chili cheese fries. We all loved our food - I'm not a crab cake person or a hot sauce person, but my siblings thought they were delicious. The burger is nicely beefy and grilled to perfection. I might add a dash more seasoning, but overall the meal was fantastic. Not to mention the hush puppies, which we all loved. Smash cut to a few days later, before we leave, I say, "Man, I'd really like to go back to Spanky's again." Everyone agrees with me - it turns out that my sister had been dreaming of revisiting those hush puppies and chili cheese fries. I got the catfish sandwich this time around and it was perfect. I've had catfish sandwiches in NYC that are almost as good and about four times more expensive. My sister had the fried flounder and she really enjoyed that too. We picked up a to-go order of hush puppies for my mom; she said they were the best she's had in the Outer Banks. As an added bonus, the owner remembered us from earlier in the week! We told him we loved it so much we had to come back again. Next time I'm in Kitty Hawk, Spanky's will be my number one stop. Honestly, it was better (and cheaper) than any sit down restaurant we visited while we were out there. PS. I checked "Beer and wine only" for alcohol, but really, they only have bottled beer. I wasn't sure what to order so he gave me a few suggestions. I got the turkey and bacon sandwich. The turkey was fresh and moist. I also ordered sweet potatoes fries and they were not greasy at all. The second time I went my husband got the surf and turf burger and it was so good! Seasoned very well and not over cooked. I got the shrimp burger which was also very delicious! Great food at great prices. Food is delivered piping hot to your table in minutes and everyone that worked there was super friendly and attentive. Crab cake sandwich, funnel cake fries, and hush puppies are the standouts for me but bacon burger, chili dog, cheese fries, and chicken fingers are also delicious. Don't be put off by the "theme" - I get it, you kind of have to stand out in an area like that - it's a nice affordable place for the whole family. I had my first Spanky's burger and sweet potato fries recently. I ordered take out from them on a high recommendation from a local. It was good, but not outstanding. I had the 1/4 lb burger with lettuce and tomato which was just average in comparison. But the prices are good, and it's a good quick choice. The sweet potato fries were very dark, but sort of soggy, that's probably what happens due to steam in the container for take out.
