My wife and I stopped in around 7:00pm for dinner after finding this restaurant on Yelp. The parking lot wasn't empty, I thought that was a good sign. Can't really rate the food because after 25 minutes, we were never approached by anyone for any order, not even drinks. The restaurant was busy but not overly so and I counted 5 servers and a bartender. I've never seen such a disorganized, unprofessional staff in my life. A lot of milling about and avoiding looking at our and 4 other unserved tables. We left as did the table next to us, 7 paying customers ignored by their staff. If you don't have high expectations you might be happy here. Friendly staff, comfortable casual restaurant. If you sit at the bar and order the bartender will take your order by memory and get it wrong. Write your order down and give it to him. Burger meat isn't good quality, reubens taste pretty good but will give your chew muscles healthy exercise; the brown mashed poatoes are tasty if you like peppery brown mashed potatoes. The first time we came here seemed to be a smoke in mirrors trick. Service was excellent and the food was great. The last two times we came here the food was noticeably declining and the service slower and slower. Then there was today. Called and asked for a reservation for 3. The girl fumbled around and told me she had to ask her manager. Held me on the line for five minutes, then said she could take the reservation. We arrived at 6:15 and it took 10 minutes to be seated. There were close to ten open tables that weren't reserved..we should have seen this as a sign to come. It took 15 minutes for our server to come over for the first time and take our drink order. Those came 10 minutes later. We ordered our food with the drinks and ordered appetizers..something that shouldn't take too long. 30 minutes after originally sitting down our waiter finally came back to say that food would be right up. 20 minutes later he, and our food, were nowhere to be found. I'd had enough so I went to the front desk and told the hostess that I wanted a check for our lemonades and that we were tired of waiting. I told her we had waited for 50 minutes and still hadn't been served the food we ordered. She said they were short staffed yet we watched every other diner get their food. It's also important to note that the restaurant was maybe 1/4 full!! The people working here were unapologetoc, rude, condecending and arrogant as hell. Not sure where you get off treating customers that way. I had my 9yr old son with who was very hungry...we waited for almost an hour for no food. I hope the manager of this restaurant reads this and takes some action. You had a nice thing going when you originally opened...now this restaurant is a sad and pathetic reminder as to how bad service thrives. We won't be back and I'll do everything I can to convince friends and readers to skip this dump. read more

I have been here twice and each time has been a poor experience. The first time, our group of five was seated right away and had a friendly server. We placed cocktail orders and ordered nachos to start. Nachos came out before drinks. They were cold and some of the chips were stale. Not sure if they were already made and were sitting for a while? It wasn't very busy but it took 10 minutes for our drinks to come out. No garnishes, even with the signature cocktail i ordered. Had to ask for some lemons and limes, they never came. We ordered our entrees when we got the drinks. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese. The pulled pork was pretty good, however, my friend ordered mac and cheese with bacon, and there were a few mushrooms mixed in. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but my friend is allergic to mushrooms. She didnt think to tell the kitchen since she didnt order anything with mushrooms in it. Cross contamination is no good. Also, i took most of my side of mac and cheese home and when i warmed it up the next day, i found a short curly black hair in it. YUCK!! Next time i went back was with 6 of my coworkers. The restaurant was very busy as it was a Saturday night. Our server was very nice but very busy and we could tell she was stressed. There were several managers present, walking around and talking to tables, but none of them seemed to be helping their staff. Lots of tables including ours with empty drinks and dirty plates taking up room. I used to be a server and understand how much work goes into it and it frustrated me to see them running around stressed out and busy while management lacked. A female manager came by and asked how things were, we said okay but asked for refills and instead of getting them for us herself, she went up to our server who was bussing tables and had her get them instead. Just didnt seem right to me. I rarely post negative reviews but I had high hopes for this place and have ended up disappointed. Update: went back to Spartan House yesterday for happy hour and it was great! Half price apps & Moscow mules definitely made me happy. Spartan House I want to love you so much! You're 5 blocks from my house, and the menu is great. BUT. I've tried you three times for carryout. After the first I said never again. But never say never, right? The second, dammit, I knew better! But tonight, the third time, was the last. For real. It's always the same story. We order quick, simple fare: a burger, a kids meal, nachos. And we're always told "20-25 minutes." And we always stand in the dining room for an additional 30 minutes waiting for the food. WTH. Just tell us it will take an hour. Please, for the love of god. And why, WHY, is the food cold!? Cold nacho cheese is the absolute pits. Anyways, I'm sad. Sitting here wondering why I didn't call Ballydoyle or Two Brothers. Sure, I'd have driven a little farther, but after you factor in that my husband stood around the dining room an additional 30 mins for cold food, well, I'd have come out ahead. Went here with family who go here often. It's a nice setting, modern with indoor and outdoor sitting available as well as a nice bar area. I think everyone was happy with their choices..wish I could say the same. I had the chicken on a pita upon recommendation. It was plentiful and comes on a flat pita which you can then fold. Unfortunately it didn't seem to have a lot of flavor. There are many choices on the menu and everything looks really fresh. I just need to choose something else next time. Spartan House is a very welcome addition to my neighborhood. Now that there's a taco joint AND a bar within walking distance of my home, there is no need to ponder the meaning of life. This. Is. It. This bar & grill is family friendly, but later in the evening had a very adult feel. Although this is a neighborhood bar, it is a far cry from a townie bar watering hole. Most of the patrons were adults: "mom's night out" ladies in their still fashionable - but matronly if you're not careful - attire, young guys and families with teens watching a game, date nights, double date nights, groups of friends, etc. The building is brand new, so the decor and fixtures are fresh and modern. There is a variety of seating - high tops, low tops, booths, and bar seats. As a short girl, I can appreciate more than just high tops in a bar, but their high tops are still pretty comfortable. There are TVs all around, broadcasting different sports events. The drink menu shines at Spartan House. The beer menu is a little shorter than what's become the 5-6 page beer menu norm, but I'm okay with that because they still have a good variety of craft beer on draft and in bottles. I even found a new favorite here, Founder's Breakfast Stout. There is a wine list and a cocktail list, and the Mediterranean Mule, with limoncello and fig vodka, is a winner! My husband and I both love this drink! I was impressed by the food. Going to a bar & grill can be hit or miss, but Spartan House is a hit. The menu is a variety of burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, salads, wings and incredible macaroni & cheese. The macaroni & cheese is a big portion of macaroni with creamy beer cheese sauce. I opted to add buffalo chicken to mine. Macaroni & cheese is one of my favorite foods, and I am in love with Spartan House's version. We also shared the cheese bricks. Yes, bricks. Large bricks of cheese deep fried. Do you even need to ask? Of course it was good. The fries are fresh cut fries, which are very good, but the truffle fries were just okay for me. I really didn't taste much truffle flavor at all. But this is hardly a deterrent from returning or ordering fries. Management is dedicated to working out the kinks of running a new establishment. Our first visit was on a Thursday evening, with the restaurant about 75% full. We were seated in a reasonable amount of time, but after waiting at the table for 15 minutes without so much as a glance from the waitress, we had to ask a manager to get service. Our only expectation was that someone would come take our order, but what happened next took us completely by surprise. The manager offered us free drinks and dinner. I was blown away by the humble apologies that followed. A different waitress then took care of us, who also served us during our second visit, and she was attentive and friendly on both occasions. Relaxing and social atmosphere, affordable and delicious food and drinks, friendly staff...what more could you ask for, especially when it's footsteps away from your front door? Even if I lived in a different town, Spartan House is worth a visit. read more

It's embarrassing to see so many young servers/bartenders who care more about gossiping and flirting versus being attentive to paying customers. The staff can't seem to stay off their phones from fb or texting and just act like work is a big joke where they get paid to do nothing. It's like pulling teeth to grab their attention or get a correct order because they just don't pay attention or either just don't care. I had lunch today at Spartan House with 14 other women; we are a book club that came in after an amazing visit at Schingoethe. The waitresses arranged the tables to help us talk and visit comfortably...so helpful. Food was excellent. I had the bean and ham soup and declare it the best ever. It is very hard to get 5 stars from me, but this place deserves it! Went tonight and it was so packed there was a wait. We decided to sit at the bar so we could just sit down and I think we will sit there in our future visits too! THe bar is wide enough to allow you to enjoy your food and not feel cramped. The bartenders working (Raquel, Eddie, and D) were excellent!! Very friendly and easy to talk to. They had great recommendations on the menu also. Could not ask for better service. The atmosphere was good, played a variety of music, had the sports games on the TVs, and I CANNOT wait for when the patio is open next year, looks awesome. Lighting was good, dim but not dark. The food and drink: I wish I would have taken a pic of my food but I forgot. SO GOOD. We had he cheese blocks to start and they were phenomenal. You could tell they were custom made and not some freezer stored fried food. My husband got he Buffalo Chicken Mac N Cheese and he finished every bite. I got the Spartan Salad, and loved it. The dressing is very spicy, but I like spicy. We finished with the big cookie for dessert and it was the perfect way to end the meal. We each ordered Goose Islands on tap, and the beers were ice cold. I've been to other places where it's somewhat cold, but Ice cold beer makes a huge difference and it was great! However the large plate pasta comes with a salad which I chose and then Spartenhouse decided to NOT even put a salad in the bag at all. Before I sent it back i asked the bartender if it was medium rare and the bartender told me it was up for discussion (don't remember the exact words). Not only did they provide exceptional service for our students but they were extremely attentive to our needs. Multiple servers and managers stopped by to say hello and to chat with us. The prices for the drinks are actually really good, but service can be a little slow, but I was in no rush. The food is delicious. I had the pulled pork and loved it with the Cole slaw on top. I'm picky about Cole slaw and this was perfect-not too creamy and a good texture. Hand cut fries are very good. I also recommend the Spartan burger-the cheese on this handmade burger couldn't be better! Love the atmosphere and our servers are always great! I've been here countless times since they've opened and I am never disappointed by the food. Mac and cheese is really wonderful; I love the curly noodles and cheese is super creamy-not sticky.
