We showed up at our appointment and it was the worst experience of my entire life. The staff in general was okay. I do not blame the receptionist and I thought the first tech was polite. After that, everything went downhill. We contacted Bethalto Animal Clinic simply to get our yearly exam and get my Dog's vaccines up to date, was we recently moved from Jacksonville, Florida to the Bethalto area. First off, the services were anything but affordable. It was over $200 for a simple exam and 2 vaccines, one of which was an oral vaccine. When I had originally scheduled the appointment, I ensured to ask if I would be allowed to be with my dog during the exam and throughout the process, as he doesn't know people at Bethalto Animal Clinic yet and neither do I. I was told yes and that the only things I would not be present for, was blood draws and if he ever needed x-rays. When we went to the back room with our dog, the tech was kind and was asking us of our concerns. Not once did she try to get to know Wilbur (our dog) and not once did she try to get him comfortable. We brought his treats with us to help him adjust a little easier and they were not used. Once she was done talking to us, she informed us that she would need to do a blood draw for one of the annual tests and we said okay. She took him back. When I tell you my dog screamed, I mean he absolutely screamed. Not once have we EVER heard him scream like that. We have been to multiple vets, and never has he been nervous or scared like he was there. They come back 20 minutes later only to tell us that everything was done. The Vet brought him in (who I have never met) and did not tell us how the exam was, discuss any issues we had, address a single concern, absolutely nothing. We paid over $200 to listen to my dog scream and I cannot tell you how disgusted I am, not only with myself for bringing him there, but for this clinic to treat my dog the way they did. We weren't even introduced to the Vet or anything. I felt talked down to when trying to discuss a potential food allergy (diagnosed by my precious 5 star vet) and it was the saddest experience of my life. I cannot describe to you the feelings I have. I will not bring a single living being to this facility ever again, and I will continue to inform everyone in my circle about the horrific treatment of my dog. This facility should be disgusted with themselves. My dog is a member of my family. For you to treat him like a number is unacceptable.

The day before Valentine's Day, I woke up to a sick dog. I called my vet immediately and let them…read moreknow what was going on. After my description, they knew she needed to seen pronto. Unfortunately they couldn't squeeze her in and recommended an emergency clinic. My vet is in STL and since I now live on the Eastside of the river, I choose Hawthorne. When I looked at the reviews on Yelp, I became concerned, but I needed a vet fast. I called, told them the issues and they said, to come on in. Wow, the staff was so attentive and caring to me and my fur-baby when we arrived. We were promptly escorted to an exam room and the vet tech was professional and thorough in asking questions to help us resolve the problem my dog was having. When the vet came to the exam room, she was very loving to my baby and explained what they determined the health issue to be. It was what I thought it was, she had an abscessed tooth. What impressed me was, how they coordinated care with my regular vet. I had my vet on the phone and as a team we all worked to see who could get her in for the tooth extraction the fastest. My vet could get her in the fastest. To make things easier for me and my vet, Hawthorne offered to do the prep bloodwork and send it to my vet. We both appreciated that. When I lived in STL, I had multiple emergency clinics to choose from when a need would arise. Now on the Eastside, there are not that many to choose from, but if there were, I'd still choose Hawthorne. I was impressed with the service and care I received and I am a picky dog dad.

PLEASE READ- IS YOUR ANIMAL SICK????? In September 2024, I…read morepaid Hawthorne Animal Hospital and Dr. Jessica Wiehrdt $7,482.00 for an emergency splenectomy for my dog. Tragically, my dog passed away from severe internal bleeding just one week later. The most painful part was the total failure of informed consent. Before the surgery, during a consultation with myself and a licensed medical doctor acting as a witness, Dr. Wiehrdt explicitly quoted a "50/50 chance of survival." What they deliberately left out was the crucial medical reality: that for aggressive conditions like splenic hemangiosarcoma, surgery alone offers a median survival time of only a few weeks, frequently ending in catastrophic internal hemorrhaging. Had I known the truth, I would have chosen a peaceful, palliative path instead of putting my dog through major, traumatic surgery for a handful of painful days. When you look at the economics, it's easy to see why these procedures are heavily pushed. If a regional hospital performs just 2 to 3 of these high-margin, nearly $7,500 terminal surgeries a month, that translates to $180,000 to $270,000+ per year generated purely from aggressive, high-cost interventions on pets facing terminal prognoses. When formally requested to take accountability and refund the $7,482 cost for this misleading guidance, hospital administration chose to completely ghost and ignore all deadlines. If you are facing critical or terminal diagnoses at Hawthorne, demand the unvarnished statistical reality of the long-term prognosis before handing over thousands of dollars. Protect your pets and your peace. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. don't do this to your baby. these people are evil.

I had two dogs getting vaccines and blood work. They opted to add a urine/fecal sample charge when I did not request this. They proceeded to say I would have to gather the samples myself. Fine, I can do that. The vet suggested multiple surgeries on my female black lab that was 13 years old. A tooth removal, cyst removal, and another procedure that I can't recall, totaling $1700. She did the same thing for my other dog, totaling $1500 which included a teeth cleaning and spay. When I left, they gave me the total for my two dogs wellness appointment that didn't last longer than 45 minutes, and it was almost $800. INSANE. I took my black lab to Ark Animal Hospital a few months later and showed her the printed sheet of suggestions the vet provided and she was horrified. She said it was borderline cruel to suggest those surgeries for a senior dog who is otherwise in good health. I will never return to this location and suggest everyone to get a second opinion before getting any surgeries from this location. Also, they are INCREDIBLY overpriced.

Would not recommend using their online pharmacy, as if the package doesn't show up, they will ask you to pay for another one, and ask you to get credited by the online pharmacy, or to wait for the initial package. It strikes me odd that they claim this is their pharmacy, but has little ways to correct issues. They stated USPS is to blame due to the snow store, but when I called USPS, the snow storm was not mentioned. Told them we will not be back and it did not seem to bother them any. The lack of care for the client only tells me I need to find a new spot.

But, after a while the cough didnt go away. They said it was probably nothing again and again. Said my daughter was overreacting. After our persisting, they tested her for heart worms which she tested positive. So, they started her on some topical medicine for the worms and we asked to have her tested during the treatment and they refused. So, we got a second opinion. The new vet stated they provided not only the wrong treatment but also the wrong dose. If you love your pet go somewhere else. Negative 5 stars!!! Did I mention they almost never answer the phone?
