A nice breakfast option especially for soccer lovers. With a name like SpeakEZ, you may expect a closet- sized jazz bar, or a dark, moody, specialty cocktail lounge. SpeakEZ, sometimes referred to as "the old Cambridge House" by locals, is neither. Rather, It's a large, well lit, bustling full service restaurant on the first floor of an old factory, with what I learned was a temping breakfast/brunch menu. My friend and I scooped up a seat on Saturday morning and split an impressive sized plate of their monte cristo french toast and their creme brûlée French toast. The two options gave us both the sweet and savory we were looking for. We both had their $5 bloody Mary's to wash it down with. Being a bit of a drink snob, I was bummed that they did not offer any infused vodkas for the Bloody, nor was it a Bloody bar that they were doing this Saturday. But my spicy bloody came out nicely with an impressive tomato, olive, pickle, pepper garnish. With a pool table in the back, sports decor sprinkled through the restaurant, and a soccer match playing on the tv's, a spirited crowd cheered throughout the morning. I'm not a big soccer fan but I know some people who are, and I plan on suggesting this place to them. I went here for the first time on 08/26/17 and was excited based off of reviews and other friends who have gone there. I must say, there are MANY truths to the words people have to say about this place!!! I went in the late morning/early afternoon and it was quiet. The service was on top of it's game and friendly faces within the building. A lot of space here too! I would imagine it would be a great place to go with a group of people. Saturdays they have a Brunch and $5 Bloody Marys and $4 Mimosas. From 10 am- 2 pm. The bloody mary is labeled as not spicy but If you are sensitive, it has a bite and all the seasoning they put in sit at the bottom of the glass, I recommend a nice stir before drinking! :P My friend ordered the Mister Florentine: Mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, spinach and roasted garlic aioli on Sourdough bread, herb-grilled and topped with Bechemel and an EZ egg. Add Sliced Turkey $2. The béchamel was amazing savory flavor and the sandwich was most certainly smothered. The bread stayed crisp until the last bite. 10/10 if you ask me! I ordered The Everton Benedict : Open face pretzel bun stacked with split Banger sausages, sliced tomato and two poached eggs, topped with a German mustard Hollandaise. Went to get brunch with a group of 8 total. Got seated and sat for 15 minutes with no even water being brought to the table. Asked host about our server and got a reply that shee knows wE are there in a bitch tone. Server comes and takes drink orders. Ten minutes and drinks arrive and brunch is ordered. After a total of 90 minutes sitting and still no food, I left. This was the WORST service I've ever had. I've ate there before and it was amazing. I stopped in for a beer... Great beer and wine prices and a solid selection. There were a few signature cocktails that are spin offs of classics such as the Negroni, but not as many as I would have thought a speak 'EZ' would have, I think there were only three. I guess if you are looking for the real classics then Viceroy is still the place. I didn't order food as the kitchen was closed, but the menu looked a bit passe to me. It seemed pretty basic and unimaginative, but I hear it tastes good. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable. The interior is very similar to the Cambridge House, in fact I'm pretty sure that Speak EZ has recycled the furniture from CH. There is some new paint and some strange VIP type sections that have been constructed. My concern for Speak EZ is that they are not doing a whole lot different than CH did. I'm not sure how sustainable their venue will be, but I wish them the best of luck! This place is worth checking out. read more

The beer prices are what I would call average for microbrews, however to appeal to those of us whom may not be very high on the SES ladder, they have 2 or 3 dollar Old Styles, which is fine by me. I had a bloody mary yesterday and thought it to be one of the better ones I've had in GR. It comes with a beer chaser which is always a plus in my book. The owner is approachable and welcoming. I can definitely see myself coming back again in the future. My wife had the turkey pesto sandwich on sour dough, and found it to be really great (I can attest to that because I had a couple bites myself). I haven't tried their entrees but I can imagine they would be quality as well. The restaurant itself was clean, as were the bathrooms. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. Friday night *catch up hour* to enjoy happy hour , I brought 3 first timers to experience a truly memorable cocktail .- Great bar service and the cocktails were discounted $3.00 which made them quite reasonable in addition to skillfully prepared. This is not an every day mojito but something quite special with real freshly made simple syrup ! .Appetizers enjoyed were the tomato bruschetta and risotto both delicious .We also ordered a couple sandwiches the Reuben and Cuban which provided plenty of left overs to pack up to enjoy later . SpeakEZ Lounge delivered over-the-top service at our wedding rehearsal dinner on Sept 13. The management was always friendly on the phone when we were planning the event. We were designated the long booth in the middle of the restaurant, and opted for a buffet-style dinner. My husband and I were blown away when we walked in and saw that they had designed table cards and menus with our engagement pictures on it (apparently they found our wedding website and got the pictures off there). Such a nice personal touch that did not go unnoticed! Words cannot describe how good the food was. Between the pear and gorgonzola salad, risotto, and pasta dish, our entire wedding party was beyond satisfied and we are still getting compliments on the meal. Great cocktails. Redrum is strong but smooth and very palatable. Vegetable risotto add drank i should have had them remove the tomatoes but i added cheese so oh well. It was really good. I mean i stuffed myself with it type good. I also had the beet tostini, they need to remove the chunks of cheese it's too much but the rest is bliss. Last weekend was my first time at the SpeakEZ lounge. While there for brunch the service and atmosphere were most enjoyable. Most of the five other girls I were with enjoyed their lunches (some of the avocados were brown that came on the dishes). I, however, was very unimpressed with my meal the "Mister Florentine". It was described to me by the waiter as a sandwich. Little to no flavor was in my meal, basically plain bread with some spinach inside drowning in sauce with a small fried egg on top. At 14 dollars for this not so impressive meal I would avoid this completely from the menu! read more

Delicious food - I am in a pleasure center when I eat here. We jumped in here on a Friday night and landed a beautiful table enough to accommodate a group of 8 or so. It was very nice and we enjoyed ourselves Until the band cranked up Maybe they should consider to turn the volume down. They have a stage in the middle of the room- and the band was a blues group. This was insanely LOUD and we couldn't talk. I think the live music scene in Grand Rapids is great however. The stage is just a little platform off the ground. But I know quite a few musicians who will continue to turn up the volume. You can't do anything about it. read more

SpeakEZ's location has been inhabited by several bars in the recent past. Previous bars have closed because they fail to attract a large crowd on a regular basis. SpeakEZ seems to be falling at the originality as well as the food. I'd first like to say that, for a bar that brands itself a "Speak Easy", the atmosphere leaves me very confused. I've been to their restaurant three times. The first was with a large group of people within a week of opening. Out of the 10 people in my party, only two were satisfied with their food. One example was the gravy covered sandwich that came out luke-warm and soggy. No one was satisfied with the price of the drinks, which seem exorbitantly high for a bar trying to attract new customers. The other two times we visited SpeakEZ, we only went for drinks and were once again disappointed with the drink prices and the taste of their house brandy. I recently drove by their establishment and saw a sign that said "$1 off Michigan beers" to attract the GR Art Festival crowd. Guys, if you want to draw a new crowd, you have to take a loss on occasion. A deal to draw in new customers would have been "$1 Michigan beers" or at least "$1 Domestics". read more

They offer a good selection of sandwiches, but not too much variety of entrees. What i have had tried though is very good. Their drink selection is fun. Only a 4 Star due to us not trying any food and getting a very outdated beer menu which lead to a long wait for drinks....BUT When they advertise a jazz jam they aren't joking! This lounge gives a pulse to downtown GR on a Sunday night. We left dinner in Rockford and decided the night was too young to go to our hotel so live music and cocktails were up our alley. From the moment you approach the front door, Jazz poured out onto the streets. The atmosphere was intimate and dim lit. The music was INCREDIBLE and evolved throughout the evening. Randissimo Marsh was filled with energy and had more players stocked in the audience that rotated and jumped in to jam. A singer named Kathy sang a gorgeous blues ballad. A soprano sax player stole the show, and traded 4's with a trombone. My husband is classically trained and got very enthralled in the music which was so great to see. The waitress was awkward and slow but sweet. it was a busy place, as well, there are two separate rooms and we sat right by the stage so it was loud in the best way. Our first round took 20 minutes to receive so they comped it which was so nice. The craft beer menu was out dated and literally all 5 beers he asked for they didn't have... I on the other hand got 2 signature cocktails (this place is known for them, highly recommend) and one was smoke infused and amazing to create and really thrilled all the senses. We didn't order food but got dessert to go. A carrot cake and a vanilla bean creme brûlée! Perfect end to our wedding anniversary and truly I'm so grateful to know about Sunday jazz, only wish we could have indulged while living in GR, we are here often still so we will be back!! If your looking for a classy way to end a chill Sunday look no further, the food smelled amazing, the drinks are great and the company is interesting. Nice little place with a very, very cool history! My girlfriend and I ventured on over for a quick dinner before hitting a show and were pretty pleased with the outcome. First off, there is a tonnnnnn of parking available - which isn't something you usually get in GR. They have a huge parking lot across the street from their location with no cost to park. Score! Second, the place looks pretty nice on the inside! We talked in and were immediately greeted with a smile from the hostess. She asked about seating and told us about the wait, but offered us seats at the bar if they were available. We sat at the bar. I ordered some pretty dang flavorful mac & cheese and threw a little extra chicken in there for good measure (I stress 'little' tho...). My cute date got herself a fresh salad concoction with some more chickadee on top to even the keel. She tried to gulp down one of their signature drinks, but was wayyyy overcome with the strength of said drink and had to send it back. I agreed. It was crazy strong. My beer, on the other hand, had no surprises and was quite good! A complaint I had was with the inside temperature. It was about 80 degrees outside and humid, and the inside wasn't much better. I'm guessing the preceding week wasn't too harsh, so they didn't want to up the A/C?? I'm not sure... But that kind of spoiled it a bit. It's tucked away on the outskirts of the city and that's kind of what drew me to it. Great drink selection but I was disappointed when I asked for a Moscow Mule with a double shot and even payed for it, yet when the drink came it tasted like a traditional mix. I have now been to SpeakEZ twice. Both visits were unplanned and last minute and left me thrilled that my other plans had fallen through. SpeakEZ has a hidden gem vibe with its location being just on the outskirts of downtown. Each of my visits happened to be during slower afternoon hours. Often, this can mean sub par service for restaurants when it's not during peak hours. My service was excellent during both times. My most recent visit was a Sunday afternoon. I went with my dad and our server Allie (sp?) was wonderful. She was patient and helpful as we tried to determine what beer to get (I settled on New Holland's #8 Ale, it was good). We ordered pancetta Mac 'n cheese and the Jerk Cuban sandwich with risotto cakes to split. Everything we ordered was incredible, right down to the risotto cakes. The portion sizes were large enough to split and still have leftovers. We ordered the Risotto Firenze to-go upon Allie's recommendation and the fact that my mother wanted something gluten-free to eat later. My mother wouldn't stop raving about how good the risotto was. All in all it was a great experience, this place is right around the corner from me, runs frequent specials, supports local, and has detailed (albeit funny and concise) descriptions of all their foods. SpeakEZ also accommodates gluten-free and vegan diets which is a huge plus to me because even though I love a great steak and pasta, I also adore my veggies. I highly recommend this place. read more

WOW... what a place to stumble into...One night my girlfriend and our roommates had hankering for some good food--of course we took it to the internet. Not knowing anyone who had been before, we decided to go out on a limb and give SpeakEZ a shot based on the recommendations online. When we found ourselves at the door we entered a wall of jazz hit us like a freight. Was were seated at a booth in the corner, and despite the volume of the band we, surprisingly, found it easy to speak with one another. Every Sunday the house band cranks out a few sets of unknown bliss. Personally, I love free flowing Jazz and boy had I hit the jackpot. After being seated we were greeted by an equally mellow server who seemed at complete ease despite the energy of the Jazz. There are a few specials that kind of hit everyone, but they are more of a subtle reward for choosing them as opposed to a ploy to drag you in. I love comfort food so I had to try one of their sandwiches--that is why this review started with 'WOW'. I ordered the Irish Pirate and words could not describe my excitement(why I'm not a food journalist) as it found a home in front of me. This leviathan of a sandwich hit just about all of the luncheon meat, with unorthodox additions such as potato chips and even gold fish--yes the cracker! This double decker sandwich was more than enough to fill me to the brim twice, but the wonderful flavor made it an enjoyable pain. They didn't have house chips at the time so I tried the Yukon potatoes. A subtle side as opposed to a show stealing side, it juxtaposed the sandwiches flavor explosion. If you are out of town it may be difficult to find as it hides itself within one of many furniture factory-converted apartment buildings, but it is definitely worth the voyage. read more

So, when my friends picked it, I had pretty low expectations and figured I'd look for the obligatory veggie burger. I completely misjudged the place. They had enough vegan options, that I was actually torn between three things. I ended up getting the mushroom risotto and it was fantastic. Also, the service was great! I recently discovered their vegan-friendly menu and have since been here twice. The vegan Jackfruit Crunch Wrap is amazing!! They also have several other vegan and gluten free options and are more than just accommodating for vegans/vegetarians. My husband ordered the Mac and Cheese without pork and the server came back and said the chef suggested adding broccoli in place of the meat. Point being that they are friendly and helpful!
