I always enjoy dining at Speisekammer! Every dish is authentically German and predictably excellent. I enjoyed my Birthday Dinner this January 29th past from Speisekammer. My sister and brother ordered my meal and my sister brought it to my apartment. In years past we have enjoyed family dinners at Speisekammer's restaurant in-door. The interior & exterior decor is 'Rustic Hunting Lodge' lending a wonderful ambience to any occasion. Speisekammer reminds me of a French Restaurant in Virginia that had a wonderful 'Rustic French Hunting Lodge' design. Years past Speisekammer has held Oktoberfest Festivities complete with musicians and dance floor. I have enjoyed the absolute best Black Forest Cake at Speisekammer. If you were thinking about visiting this restaurant and leaving your waiter a cash tip, save yourself the embarrassment and DONT. We recently experienced the worst customer service in this restaurant after our table was approached, in a super rude manner by the owner, questioning why my husband had only left a $40 gratuity on our $600 bill. The rest of the tip was going to be given cash ($60) to our waiter by the rest of our party. Prior to this, we had visited the restaurant multiple times a year for the last 10 years due to this being the closest German restaurant from home. After this experience, I will never be recommending this restaurant again. Save yourself the embarrassment and give your business to other local German restaurants (SF, Oakland & Mountain View) where I'm sure the owner will be grateful for your visit and he/she won't be paying your table a visit for tipping cash. read more

I don't know why I don't come here more often. We had to come for their roast porkbelly. OMG a killer item, served with a mustard sauce and stir fried kale. Totally outstanding. Not Tool fatty. And portion size enough for a second meal. Wife had grilled trout which was perfect. Also had enough for next day. I'm glad they now post their specials on the website. Came back again and listened to a set from Lavay Smith and Jules Broussard. Excellent! Had the schweinhaxen. Huge portion and moist. For all of the rave by previous reviewers about vegan options, I was expecting a little more. There's no vegan entree nor anything that could be modified to be so. And they were unsure if the bread was vegan. It's 2019, I'm expecting a little more. My meal ended up being sides - the potato pancakes and all the vegetable sides. Both were good, if a little oily but in the end, nearly $30 is an awful lot to pay for several different kinds of vegetables. I'm no expert on German food, but I don't think that a vegan entree is a big ask given the typical ingredients. read more

This place has it all: delicious food, a variety of beer selection. If it's a chilly day or night, there is an indoor hunting lodge-type feel. If it's a lovely sunny day, there is outdoor seating, where you can enjoy your beer in the great out of doors. Their food really stands out. I've had their schnitzle and spaetzle several times and they are heavy and good. I also have had their stuffed cabbage rolls, which are delicious. A favorite starter here are the potato pancakes. It was a Sunday after a round of golf with 3 buds in Oakland when someone suggested Speisekammer for dinner in Alameda. Speise-what???? Speisekammer a German bar/restaurant. OK I am game... We got there ten minutes later and it was fairly packed but we got a table right away outside. Small problem with the table arrangement.. the setting sun shined directly into the eyes of everyone on one side of the table. This has to be fixed. Our waitress was fairly prompt and we decided to go family style. We ordered the mix meat plate which good for two or three, a roasted pork shank which was a special for the day, and a trio of vegetables. We also got a small mug of beer. The food was served after about a ten minute wait together with two kinds of mustards, one savory one sweet. I have to admit all the dishes were consistently good. The mustards added a nice touch to the meal. We also ordered some potato pancakes with the homemade apple sauce and it was excellent too. Bottom line good food and drink, prompt service and nice atmosphere made it a great meal. Go by and visit. read more

COVID 19 REVIEW Came here for dinner one cold evening. We sat on a picnic table in front of the restaurant on their patio without the protection of any tent or umbrella. Fortunately, I had a heat torch behind me and the cold was quite tolerable. The picnic table wasn't the most comfortable, but I was quite surprised how warm I was while seated for dinner. My family and I LOVE Speisekammer. We are Eastern European ourselves and can safely say Speisekammer is the closest thing to a home cooked German&Polish meal as you can get. During the summer and place is packed, during the winter the place is packed, almost every time you go it's bustling with business. The service is great, the food is even better. Although the location might throw you off if you aren't from the area, don't let it fool you. Just don't park on Park street or right in front, this is a safe (for you and your car) residential area with ample free parking just past the small intersection heading away from the restaurant and park street. My only complaint is how loud it is. The acoustics and people combined can make it difficult to hear your own dinner party. But that's about it :) read more

I didn't know what to expect coming here for dinner but I can say that I was thoroughly impressed by the food and service. First off, this place is huge with seating outside when you arrive on the front patio and three rooms inside. It felt very inviting as there were friendly people looking like they were having a good time. I even saw a dog sitting beside his owner and eating like a patron. My friends and I sat at a long table with a bench that barely fit the 9 of us. The person at the end of the bench had her knees to the wooden beam of it and ended up hitting her knee every time she had to get up to let others out and sitting back down. She ended the night with a big bruise on her knee. Anyhoo, the menu was a little intimidating at first since it's in German but I just looked for items that were gluten and dairy free. We ended up ordering an array of items and doing family style. The items that I enjoyed the most were the salad, smoked salmon, brussel sprouts, and family platter. The family platter had a pork chop and sausages. I'm not a fan of sausages so I didn't quite enjoy it but the pork chop was very tender and I could've easily eaten the whole piece by myself if I didn't have to share. Our waitress was quirky and funny and came by often to check on us. She was extremely attentive and friendly. At the end of the night, she even came around with a round of vodka shots. When it came time for dessert, my friend ordered two items for himself and thought the Turkish coffee creme brûlée was coffee. We ended taking one for the team and helping him eat the desserts, the creme brûlée was creamier than pudding and the coffee flavor was prominent but didn't overpower the dessert. My friends raved over the Apple strudel with ice cream as it was a well balanced dessert with almonds which added a good texture, plus cinnamon which added a nice touch. (4.5) Came here on a Saturday night for a birthday party. There was a live band playing in the front room and it was pretty happening. Since then I have been back several times. I just love this place. I didn't realize then but there is a big back area too with plenty more seating and also the front patio. This place feels homey and comforting. I am a vegetarian and yet I leave there satisfied. I love the cheese plate to start. There is a ton of fruit and cheese plus you can add a pretzel. All of the vegetarian options are yummy and my meat eater fiance can vouch for the meat and he says it is delicious. Great date or family place I love coming here. That was my favorite thing when I went for the first time for one of their Oktoberfest celebrations. How can the cook or chef serve it to people to eat? Is there no decency and ethics? If a cook messes up on cooking, they should throw away and re-cook for the customer. I grew up eating German food thanks to my German-born Oma and my fantastic-cook Mom, so I was thrilled to try Speisekammer with my parents for a Sunday supper. The outdoor seating is pleasant and spacious, with a gasthaus informality that suits the beer & sausage part of the menu. The food was excellent, but service was a bit uneven. For instance, a server we hadn't ordered from brought our beers to the table, but he didn't know who ordered what, so he said the unfamiliar name of the producer of the beer (rather than the type of beer, which I would have recognized), then shook the stein at me and repeated himself with obvious annoyance when I didn't immediately claim the beer. It's ideally a server's job to know who ordered what, but if they have to ask, especially in a place with an extensive beer list of mostly lesser-known producers, all in German, it's inappropriate to show impatience. But we never saw that server again - everyone else we interacted with from that point on was gracious and professional. On to the food! The gravlax and potato pancakes appetizer was one of the best I have ever had, with shatteringly crisp shredded potato, silky and deeply flavorful salmon, and an addictive mustard dill sauce. For mains, we had the Jager schnitzel and stuffed cabbage. The schnitzel was outstanding - a perfectly tenderized pork cutlet with just the right degree of crispiness - accompanied by a giant helping of spaetzle, a slightly too viscous mushroom cream sauce, and a salad of pickled vegetables. The cabbage rolls were pretty good - the ground beef stuffing was well seasoned but dry, and the mashed potatoes only so-so. I'm looking forward to exploring everything on the menu! read more

Stopped by here for an afternoon snack one weekend. The place was empty, and service was prompt. Decided to split an order of 2 bratwurst, and got a cider to go along with it. The bratwurst came with fries and tomato sauce. The sausages themselves weren't all that impressive. Very standard tasting. The tomato sauce was pretty good, and the fries were good. The cider I got came in a can, but it was sweet and yummy. It was some blueberry one I think. Prices were on the higher end, with most dishes hovering around $15. The meat platter or Gegrillte Fleischplatte was several varieties of sausages and tender pork chops served over a bed of sauerkraut and different types of mustard. I would've asked for the sauerkraut on the side to keep the meats from becoming too sour and soggy. Sides were the Cheesy Spätzle, roasted potatoes with bacon and a defibrillator. I had my birthday dinner here on March 14 of 2020-the last day of indoor normalcy. There was a band playing in the bar, we enjoyed a meal that stretched over a couple hours--feasting at a perfect pace on some of the tastiest food one can enjoy. Great food and great service! Came here for the first time today, and the service was above and beyond. After ordering, we were accidentally brought the wrong platter. We were definitely not expecting to be able to keep the platter we got and also have the one we ordered. It was such a lovely surprise and we were so thankful. We have been coming here for years and years. The prices have increased tremendously to the point where we won't just casually stop by anymore. It's once thing if the food is amazing, but the quality has gone down at the same time. A lot is bland or is just drenched in oil lacking flavor. They no longer have the nice bread that they used to serve. And generally speaking, the food is not exactly authentic. Everything shouldn't be so oily. It's a real bummer because there is so much potential. I get that food prices have increased, but what they are charging for very simple items -- for example, basic, over-fried potato pancakes ($17.5 for 3 small pieces) is ridiculous. Their new menu is a very scaled down version of what they used to offer; but quadruple the price. We walked out paying almost $200 for a casual, BASIC lunch. Not what I was expecting. And the service is fine but not great: we had to ask for basic things like silverware and napkins and it wasn't even busy. I do care about this establishment so hope they rethink their business strategy. Doesn't seem sustainable. read more

Kind of a small portion for such a simple dish for the price, but it was tasty. Our friends like the place, so I'm sure we'll be back.
