Wish I had known about Speisekammer sooner! Their food is so crave-able and satisfying. I ordered their wiener schnitzel and substituted mashed potatoes. I enjoyed Speisekammer's wiener schnitzel much more than Suppenküche's (too dry). They managed get the pork cutlet crispy while maintaining the moisture within. Their full order comes with two pork cutlets which served as two hearty meals for me. If you have a smaller appetite, they offer half orders as well. Ordering a side of mushroom sauce is a must! It's the perfect complement to the schnitzel. Their mustards are a must too. We ordered their potato pancakes as well which were extra crispy but slightly dry. I loved that they had Schofferhofer's grapefruit beer, amongst many other beer selections. Speisekammer is much more spacious than Suppenküche and would be great for bigger groups as well (order the boot!). Service here was excellent and it was easy to get staff's attention for assistance. This was a fun place to go to. The wait staff was attentive, but not overly so. They had a great drink menu and specials. I got the pork cutlets with the mushroom sauce, which was fantastic. I did get dessert of apple strudel which I thought would've been much better warmed up and the ice cream served a little colder as it was almost melted by the time I got to me. the dishes that were going by me looked just as good as mine. I love German food, and when I heard there is a good place in the East Bay, I had to drop by. Speisekammer (pantry) is on Lincoln near Park in Alameda. They offer traditional German dishes, and real German beer on draught. I ordered a bratwurst w/ sauerkraut & fries ($9.50), and a Hacker-Pschorr ($7 - maltier lager w/ a crisp finish). First of all, the bratwurst was very good. It had a nice snap to it, and the flavor really stood out. The only downside was there could have been more kraut: 4 Stars. On the other hand, the beer was excellent. It was the perfect accompaniment to the bratwurst on a hot day. Lastly, it was reasonably priced: 5 Stars. I was watching Women's World Cup, and I couldn't have picked a better place. There is an outdoor patio, in addition to a cool bar w/ some nice handles. Lastly, there are some tables in the back: 4 Stars. The service was OK. The frauleins took a while to acknowledge me, but they were OK after that: 3 Stars. Comfort food at it's best! You can never ever go wrong at Speisekammer. Their menu covers all the bases in the German comfort food category. I love to get the red cabbage, mashed potato's and sausage or even salmon as my meat selection. Ever since I lived in SF, I would go to their sister restaurant Suppen Kuche with my friends. We are so lucky in Alameda to have this top notch restaurant in our very own back yard. Seriously!!!!! Love the cucumber salad, kase spatzle, and their authentic variety of German main courses. As the daughter of a German mom who migrated here, I can assure you that everything tastes authentic, plus decorated in the traditional wooden style. Lot's of authentic beer steins and coo coo clocks to give you all the feels, that you could actually be in Germany while dining inside. Amazing staff as well! A must try if you have never been. One of my best memories was captured here and has taken me a while to write this review as I've been holding it dear in my heart. My father has traveled the world throughout his Military Career and of all the meals he's eaten, he had been craving a good wiener schnitzel. It was certainly hard for me to find a German restaurant since we live an hour away from Alameda but once I found Spisekammer, he was more than willing to make the hour trip for this food adventure. It was Father's day and I made a reservation for three earlier that week. Upon arrival we had difficulties finding parking, especially handicap so I had to drop them off, park a few blocks down, then meet up with them at the restaurant. We were seated in the dining area behind the bar which had dim lighting and large community tables. The complementary bread(s) were very delicious. The variety of breads were very good and pleased my dad. He ordered his Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein, I did as well, and my mother ordered a seafood plate. In addition we ordered the potato pancakes, Sauerkraut, and Red Cabbage. The service was up to par until the restaurant started to packed, the more patrons, the less we saw our server. Well, according to my dad the Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein was alright. I, however, liked it. The Potato Pancakes were a bit too greasy but I was a fan of the sauerkraut. A small patio / Biergarten out front. Lunch at Speiskekammer is about a dozen items. Mostly sandwiches and egg / omelet dishes along with a few plates like Curry Wurscht and Weiss Wurscht (Sausage & Pretzel). These last two you can get Full or Half orders. They used to call their half-order items the Recession Menu, but are now permanent additions. A friend of mine brought me to this hidden gem on October 17th after a symposium. All I can say is this was the best German food and German beer that I have ever had! All the food was authentic, and they have a large selection of German beers. I had the Bratwurst Gegrillt which was two grilled lean pork bratwurst with cracked spices served over sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. It was all so delicious, and the sauerkraut was to die for! They serve this in a full order or a half order. That half order is one bratwurst. And for the beer I had the Weltenburger Asam Bock which was a dark, rich and multi beer from Germany with a hint of chocolate. Delicious! They have a large variety of foods to choose from on their menu and most of them are full and half Orders so depending on your appetite you can get plenty of food. And their drink list is very large as well. There are a variety of wines from Germany, Sonoma, Napa, France, and other well as a large variety of cocktails, and beers! They also have a large Friday have appetizers to choose from. There is nightly music, there is a patio in the front seat so on those hot summer nights you can sit outside, or you can sit inside the restaurant where there are plenty of seats to choose from. It is a very popular place so it is very noisy inside. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, it is good for groups, as well as good for kids. The night that we went to the restaurant, the service was excellent. My friend has been here several times and said it has always had good service. Every once in awhile a big plate of German food really hits the spot, like right after you've played video games for an hour in an old school arcade down the street! Last night at Speisekammer I opted for a cup of the sweet corn soup and a half order of the Weiskohlrolade (stuffed cabbage rolls) which comes with mashed potatoes. I washed it all down with a Possmann Pure Cider from Frankfurt. I'll definitely come back for the cabbage rolls (and mashed potatoes!) and soup but next time I think I'll seek out a different beverage, especially given the great selection of interesting beers here. I especially love that they do half orders of almost all their entrees. This casual restaurant has a warm and welcoming vibe about it and seems equally great for a group or a date. I didn't see any kids during my dinner but it strikes me as a pretty kid friendly place in both food and atmosphere. Our excitement of dinner at Speisekammer was interrupted by the two hostesses. As the two of us entered the restaurant, they stared at us with emotionless faces as if we don't belong. Even when we told them we have a reservation, not a crack of smile or hint of politeness. Thank goodness for our server (forgot his name)! His friendliness saved the day! Since it was our first time having German cuisine, he recommended sharing the meat platter and 1/2 order of creamy spatzle as an introductory meal. Speisekammer offers a Recession menu which is basically the main dishes with smaller portions which is perfect for me. We ordered Kleine Nürnberger Bratwurstchen, Schweinebraten and Raddler beer. The Bratwurstchen came with Nürnberg sausage, sauerkraut and mustard. The dish came with 6 small sausages and sauerkraut. Sauerkruaut wasn't too tart and sausages were good with the mustard. Schweinebraten came with braised tri tip marinated in red wine and spices, red rabbage & spätzle. The tri tip was good but my dining companion said that the beef should have been more tender. I did like the flavor of the beef and sweetness of the red cabbage. I didn't think much of the spätzle but then again spätzle doesn't have flavor and just adds carbs and texture to the dish. For my "dessert," I had Raddler (lager topped with Lemon Lime soda), which I guess is the German version of shandy and definitely for those like me who don't know how to drink beer. It was light and sweet and I managed to drink half my glass. I have such a hidden love for German bars and grub. This location has an awesome patio out front and 2 TVs inside by the bar. Upon arrival, we were greeted and given a table immediately. They have an extensive beer menu that could make any beer lover smile. They also have a full bar if you want something else. Food-wise, I was mostly happy with what we ordered. There was a special that they offered which was a fish and seafood stew. They were out of a particular fish so I was ok with them substituting for extra salmon and mussels. This bowl of goodness was fantastic. I was sad after every bite knowing that it would be over soon. The seafood was cooked to perfection and the broth was seasoned to the T. The Jägerschnitzel was also delish. The pork was moist and tender. The schnitzel was definitely homemade and covered with delicious gravy. Awesomeness. A half order was good enough for me. The potato pancakes, unfortunately, left much to be desired. It was flavorless although texture was super crispy. I'd probably skip out on that next time. I'm not a German food connoisseur but I definitely love it! My friend was in town staying with her in-laws in lovely Alameda, and she suggested we walk down to a nearby German restaurant. It was really warm that evening which made the patio out-front an awesome seating option. I love the big picnic tables because it reminds me of Oktoberfest in Munich... Speisekammer has a great selection of beer (as you would expect), and a ton of great menu items. I couldn't decide but went with the old standby - weinershnitzel. I find that some weinershnitzels are too greasy but this was great - lightly breaded and yummy. It was delicious as were all the sides of cabbage and beets. I'm not in Alameda often, but this is almost an excuse to go to Alameda! read more

This was my first time eating at a German restaurant so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was really impressed with the service. We came here for dinner and sat out in the patio because we had a dog with us. It was a bit chilly but they didn't have any heat lamps outside so our waiter brought us each a fleece blanket to keep ourselves warm during dinner. She even brought my friend's dog a dog bowl with fresh water. Awesome! We ordered the Reibekuchen appetizer - the apple compote was interesting. I typically don't pair sweet and salty but it seemed to work. For my entree, I ordered the Gegrillte Bratwurst (whole portion of course). The waiter let me substitute the mashed potatoes for fries (Yes!). The food was decent and filling enough to satisfy our hunger. They also have local beers... and cocktails if you prefer. I came in here on October 12 right as they opened. Granted, my boyfriend and I sat outside so that we could have a more open space and see what else Alameda had to offer. We were celebrating our 1 year together and picked this place so we could try something that a little more into our roots (we both have a some German blood in us). We tried the potato pancakes, a full plate for a little over $8. They're basically hashbrowns that are cut into 4 "silver dollar pancakes." Upon ordering food, the boyfriend ordered the full plate of porkchops with fries and he asked to substitute the saurkraut (I believe thats what it was) for a tad bit more fries. Our server, agreed. I ordered the Salmon and asked the server if she could remove the dil-sauce that would have been put on top. For drinks, we had hot chocolate, a coffee and water. Our server replayed our order to us and I was surprised she remembered every single detail of our order. I received my exact order and was satisfied with the appearance of it. While another waitress brought my boyfriend his order, which turned out to be 1 sausage and fries. We tried to talk to our server, instead the server who handed him his food came out and told us that we had ordered the sausage and that there was no full plate for his sausage and fries. We tried to explain that he ordered the porkchop dish and while she continued to deny it. She didn't even ask if they could correct the order. All in all, when the receipt came, I definitely made sure that we weren't billed for the porkchops. We left, unsatisfied, hungry and went to find another place to eat. I love this place. Legit German food (it dials back the usual salt level, which is amazing). Really takes me back to my traveling days! Their beer list is extensive and covers various regional beers. The food is well priced for the serving size (the half order option is amazing for us that can't eat that much!), it's tasty and as authentic as it gets in terms of popularized dishes (though I could eat a tub of their beer cheese and fresh pretzels...). For dinner I had the Jagerschnitzel, a side of potato salad, and pretzels shared among friends. The Jagerschnitzel, breaded thin pork loin with mushroom ragout and spatzle, tasted as expected (read: delicious). The ragout and spatzle combine to form a savory pasta-esque dish, and the schnitzel's crust - just crispy enough without succumbing to dryness - bears mentioning. The potato salad certainly differed from American potato salad. Sparing use of dressing, just enough to give a vinegary tang, made for a simple, but delicious side. The pretzels, hot from the kitchen, along with the accompanying cheese, also tasted quite satisfying. One nitpick - one of the cheeses seemed to come straight from the refrigerator. I'm surprised we haven't actually stopped by this one before, but I'm definitely hopeful that we'll be able to stop by others in the future. I ended up with the (I honestly don't remember the name but it was basically German Mac with Grilled onions and white cheese). It was pretty tasty! Not something I'd drive over here for, but definitely satisfying. We also got the CARROT CAKE! It was also something pretty good but not epic. For appetizers, we ordered the kleine Nürnburger Würstchen, pretzel and German fries. The fries and small sausages were delicious (especially with the sauerkraut). The curry ketchup with the fries brought back memories of currywurst I have often had in Berlin. The pretzel was a bit disappointing, but the spicy mustard was awesome. We had no idea we ordered so much food for appetizers that by the time our entrees came, we felt full. My friend ordered the Jägerschnitzel, and I ordered the Bratwurst. He really enjoyed his Schnitzel, but I was a bit disappointed with my Bratwurst -- they were too grilled, and a bit burnt. Beers were pretty cheap ($5-6 for half-liters), appetizers were almost $10 (proportions were HUGE), and the main dishes were around $15-20 (not bad, actually). The service really good. The server checked on us periodically -- not too often and not too little. We also had our finished dishes taken away promptly. There was no rush to leave, and we were there until an hour after their closing time, along with other customers. The unfortunate thing about the location is the parking -- it SUCKS. Hate to say it but this place was jus okay. Do keep in mind, I'm not a beer drinker. The restaurant was nice. There was deck seating as you come in. Plenty of benches and tables. Very social setting the sunny day I came in after work. The front room was nice and lively also. We were seated in the back room which was much more mellow. Food: We ordered the potato pancakes, which was actually my favorite part of the meal. Nice crispy texture and seasoned perfectly. the cabbage rolls: nothing spectacular. It was bland to me sadly. Sausages on the appetizer menu: our sausages were dry!!!! I was so dissapointed. Pork cutlets with mushroom sauce: again it was a miss for me. I was expecting amazingness from reviews but the mushroom sauce reminded me of the Campbell's gravy I use for thanksgiving. There were chunks of mushrooms which I appreciated. I haven't eaten a ton of German food in my time but if it tasted like the food here, I'd eat it a lot more often. The staff was so nice and accommodating, food came out quickly, and everything tasted like it was cooked with love. My favorites were the charcuterie plate with a great chicken liver pâté, the garlic butter and bread to start, the meat platter with a wide variety of sausages and ham, and the potato pancakes with lox. Their sweet mustard was amazing with all the sausages. The bacon wrapped meatloaf wasn't very good though, but there's so much else to try just skip that one. read more

First let me say we love this restaurant, the food is exceptional! Yesterday I had an Uber eats delivery issue where my food was lost. I mistakenly called the restaurant instead of Postmates, first, and asked what was going on with my order, as I was very hungry for some delicious food.. the staff at the restaurant informed me that they did not have control over the delivery process, and my food had been mistakenly picked up.. oh the restaurant informed me that they would remake my order quickly and make sure it got to me which could've been at their expense.. I promptly called Postmates customer service, who also took care of the issue, but I made sure that the restaurant was going to get reimbursed. For me... To have that level of dedication and commitment and service to a local frequent customer was very appreciatiated.. I will always continue eating at this restaurant in person and dining out and I love to support local businesses. Maybe if I didn't come alone, and maybe if I came earlier my experience would have been different. I ordered the petite sausage over sauerkraut and a order of potato pancakes. The sausage and kraut was good! It's tricky business preparing any ethnic food for someone else. Food can be strongly tied to emotions and memories. Such is the case with me and potato pancakes. No pancakes ever brought back the memory of my grandmother's. But I have to say these were the furtherest from grandmas. Hers were grated and fried. The edges only were crisp. Like a breakfast pancake can be crisped at the edge. Speisekammer's we're kind of like bird nest in that you could see each potato grating. Plus maybe the oil wasn't quite hot because they were also quite oily. I didn't mention it to the waiter because once he took my order, he never came back. Another person delivered the food and no one checked on me after that. When I was ready to go, I had to hunt someone down to pay my bill. Next time perhaps I'll get the large $55 platter and share all the yummy meats and skip the pancakes read more

The food is the best around no doubt, I tried Schweinebraten and the Wiener schnitzel on Saturday with my daughter and we love it, the next day Sunday I took my wife for her favorite sauerbraten and it was just as delicious. I have tried other restaurants but here the food is consistent and the German beer selection is awesome to pair it with any dish, however on both occasions the service needs improvement. Both times with different servers we had to ask for our favorite, mustard, and both times the attention to detail was not there, not once did they ask if our food was ok or if we needed anything else. I was hoping to finish with apple strudel and get more pints of great German beer, but nobody came and I felt unattended on both occasions. I definitely recommend you try the food, the service was a bit bias and too generic like they were not ready to help us, or we were not going to tip them, which we handsomely did because it is a hard job to be a server. I would definitely recommend this place for the food and ambiance. It makes miss going back to Germany and visit again. read more

The food was it's normal super hearty: meaty and big-time carbed and oiled. Just what my son wanted BUT four of us ordered and after a few minutes ONLY TWO orders appeared. A half an hour later two of us were STILL SITTING WITH NO FOOD, stealing from our tablemates, TEN MINUTES MORE and we gave up and CANCELLED. The waiter was hiding but pleasant when we found him. BUT he was totally ineffective ("There is a new system and it has problems.") Big problems if you leave us patrons hungry watching our friends eating for that long. The manager never appeared. No apologies from anyone but the flustered server. What happened to you today??? -- you really screwed up our lunchtime reunion with family. read more

We've eaten here 3 or 4 times. Tonight was the first time we had a challenge. Jaeger Schnitzel was so salty it had to be sent back and replaced with Weiner Schnitzel. The potatoes were also very salty and soaked in bacon grease. The four other meals were fine except for the über salty roasted potatoes. It will be a while before we drive an hour to try again. The service was a bit below par, not enough staff to handle the dinner rush. That's happening in every restaurant. Ambiance is always fun. Mish mosh of decor and tonight the music was Irish for St. Paddy's day. Eclectic. read more
