We had a reservation and received confirmation that it went through, we got here and apparently our reservation didn't go through. While we did get seated right away, we ordered and waited 1 hour and our food never came. Then when we flagged down the waiter, he tracked down our appetizer- 1 hour and 20 minutes after we ordered. He brought out our fried potato pancake appetizer which was COLD. We've now been here 1 hour and 45 minutes, we still haven't gotten our entrees. The cheese board at the Speisekammer is the best in the East Bay. Period. Get it with the warm, salted pretzel and beer cheese dip. Terrific assortment of marbled, soft, blue and creamy cheeses with apples, dried fruit, and (hallelujah!) a reasonable amount of dark bread/s/crackers for it all. The warm pretzel with beer cheese is sinfully satisfying. We judge all other beer cheese by this one and it's still #1. We also recommend the Wiener Schnitzel Sandwich with Roasted Potatoes. Great aioli. They have wine in addition to a wide assortment of beer. The servers are nice and knowledgeable about what you might like. Outside patio with heaters and a cozy German inspired interior. The beer was great , they are open on Mondays now , in the eve , but the soft pretzel had no salt on it. I was barely warm. The cheese sauce was very liquidy should've been creamier., they were out of my favorite meal, was the meat and with spetzal and red cabbage so I got meatballs with special and red cabbage. This was my first visit, and I was very impressed! The place is small looking but has a large indoor series of areas for dining. Although facing a busy street, we sat on the patio, which was very relaxed and relatively quiet. The menu was extensive, and the food options were too many, so I basically decided on two new dishes for me: the potato pancakes (Reibekuchen) and Gratinierte Kasespatzle - mac 'n cheese - with cheddar-parmesan cheese and caramelized onions, with a side salad for the large size. Salad was a combination German salad with shredded cabbage, dill cucumber, pickled red beets and marinated carrots. One of my companions had the Lachs Croquettes, salmon coquettes on a bed of mixed greens, and the other had the Aufschnittplätte, which is a combination of assorted German cold cuts, including mortadella with pistachios, soppressata, coppa, salami, summer sausage with herbed goat cheese, onions, cornichons and sliced baguette. Of course, we also enjoyed three German draft beers: the HB lager, the Paulanger, and the Spaten lager. All were coldly delicious! The potato pancakes came first, and I expected them to be shredded flat, but they were more like hash brown sheds but smaller. Tasty fried and served with apple sauce on the side for dipping or spreading. The rest of the food came shortly after. The servings were impressive, for both the plating and volume. The salad was delicious, and I mixed the veggies for each bite. The mac 'n cheese was different, very creamy yet subtle in its cheese. One person at home had a taste of the half I took home and called it "bland." I liked it, but if y9ou are used to mac 'n cheese with sharp cheddar, for example, it may be too "subtle" for you. But again, I liked it very much as a change. I did not taste the other plates, except for the herbed goat cheese. Wow. VERY creamy and with a strong herbal taste, which I could only think of as a rosemary type - maybe juniper? Odd that I could not place the herb(s) but very good. And if you have a dog, please bring it! Not only are they welcome, but they also have a menu dinner dish for dogs! It is dog food but sounds fancier in German. I honestly don't understand why this place has over 4 stars. Maybe for their service and ambiance? I felt completely bamboozled by the rating, hoping the food would live up to it. We ordered the jager schnitzel and a couple of beers. The beers were great, but the meal was very disappointing--the cutlets were so thin, it was like having 1 cutlet split into 2 and the lack of flavor. The spaetzle (usually my favorite part about German food) was even more disappointing--it was soggy and had absolutely zero flavor. I've made way better spaetzle at home. Came to Speisekammer on a Saturday night for the Krampus St. Nick evening. At first, they said they couldn't accommodate our party of 6 even though we had called more than once to discuss the rain and no outdoor seating (to make sure they could take us before we came from San Jose). After about 15 minutes of waiting, they figured it out and sat us in the back. It was the first time for many of us and we were sooooo pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious! Everything tasted fresh, and nothing was greasy. The portions are humongous, but they are also pricey, so don't expect a cheap meal. I was very happy to see multiple vegetarian options and enjoyed everything we ordered. The meat eaters really enjoyed it and had that look on their face when they were chewing. The potato pancakes are AMAZING! The pretzels and beer cheese are amazing! The vegetable trio is cooked perfectly and has a great flavor. The chicken schnitzel is breast meat that's crispy, moist, and not oily at all. My friend got the smoked pork shank and was in total heaven. We will absolutely be back as it was great for all! Wonderful spot. Authentic atmosphere (except for the Mexican music! What was that about?) Menu is terrific. Lots of dishes, well described and delicious sounding. I had pork shank. Large and well cooked. Sauerkraut was a bit overcooked, I thought. My guest had a remarkably generous half-portion of something (I forget), which looked good and he could hardly finish. First time here. Walked it and it smelt great. We were seated and it took quite some time for a serve to even acknowledge our existence. Once we ordered it took even longer for our food to come out the kitchen. First was the potato pancakes. Two of them were served and both my partner and I had one. Her was fried perfect. Crispy and light with strong potato flavor. Mine was RAW on the inside. Had to send that back. Then where where delighted to be delivered out food but not, the table next to us food was dropped off and hastily taken away you would think since our hands touched their food they would re fire. Nope they just dropped it off to them. Finally! Our food arrives. We ordered sausages and they were phenomenal everything I expect from a German restaurant. My chicken came not very hot and lacking the signature sauce. By the time our waitress did her first table touch my chicken was room temp and by the time she came back with the sauce it was cold. Another send back. Sad because everything had great flavor. Foot note as I write this at the table I asked for the check and when I see her 10 mins later she doesn't have the check printed out still as she brings a drink to another table. I leave them with 2 star but I will be back and I know they can do better and hopefully they can do better than their horrible showing today. read more

The whole experience of eating at Speisekammer was great. It was our first time there. I had goulash with spatzle, and a wonderful creamy chicken soup. My wife had grilled salmon with an incredible potato cream soup. Some of the other German type things on the menu included Weiner Schnitzel (pork, chicken or veal), Jager Schnitzel (not breaded but with mushroom sauce), Sauerbraten (beef tri-tip marinated and braised in red wine), and Schweinebraten (Roasted pork in beer sauce). The items we had were outstanding! I grew up in a slavic-hungarian home with all these kinds of dishes made by my Croatian-Jewish parents. The goulash and spatzle I had were "just like mom used to make" - authentic and excellent!. We will definitely be going back to try some of the other things on the menu. The restaurant is casual in appearance, very friendly and appealing, with lots of inside and outside table space. The service was great. read more

Cozy restaurant serving good takes on classic German food. Stopped by here on a whim for dinner with my girlfriend. We arrived around 7 PM and the restaurant was not completely full but had plenty of patrons there. We were promptly seated and given menus. For food we got the following: * Two Reibekuchen * A La Carte Pretzel and Beer Cheese * Currywurscht Meal * Gratinierte Kasespätzle The Reibekuchen and Pretzel came first - from a flavor perspective this were both great. The Reibekuchen were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and were texturally fun - the apple sauce was also a nice flavor along with the potato's as well. The Pretzel was also good - especially with the beer cheese and house mustard. The Beer cheese was surprisingly beer forward in the best way possible and tasted extremely good. My only negative comment on the the appetizers is that I found them to come out warm and not hot - this didn't deter from the flavor or our dining experience though. The main courses we got were quite good - I got the Currywurst Meal and it was simple but quite delicious. The curry ketchup was robust and very tasty, the fries were prepared perfectly, and the links were very good. My girlfriend got the Kasespätzle and she enjoyed it - the portion size was generous and the flavor profile was really great. This was the best mac and cheese adjacent dish I've had in a long time. This was my girlfriend's first time trying german food and she enjoyed it. Her only comment was that she would've preferred the noodles to be cooked a little more al dente but that is more of a preference thing. All in all, we found this restaurant to be really solid. I haven't had much german food out here in the Bay Area yet but this definitely hit the spot and met up to par with the restaurants I've tried here. I ordered a large which came with 2 schnitzel per order so i can have left overs. My order cost me $101, ouch! What a fun environment Speisekammer is. Right from the beginning we were taken cared of by our server (sad I couldn't snag his name) I was able to book the reservation for 15 during the week while on our mission. German food is new for me so trying the pork cutlet with the pickled sides was amazing, the texture and how each side complimented each other was an experience. The restaurant was fun and with a group as big as ours the servers were able to engage with us and understand our celebration finishing our mission. I had a couple of different beers on draft one which was Radeberger. The other escapes me. They were fine, however if they would chill their steins beforehand that would make it better especially on warm days. I had come here years ago but wasn't anticipating much in the quality of the food which totally impressed me. The Reibekuchen ( potato pancakes) were good. Pretzel mit Bier-Kassesosse was nice to munch on. The Weisskohl Rouladen was impressive. Who knew cabbage could be so tasty? The Geraeucherte Schweinehaxe ( pork shank) was done nicely and I recommend it. The Black Forest cake was probably the least favorite not that it was bad but because my German friend had higher expectations. Our server was the best. We initially sat indoors then moved outdoors. Speisekammer is a must-stop for me each time Chun P and I are visiting family in Alameda. Just last Saturday we stopped by for appetizers after our nephew's birthday party down the street at Subpar Mini Golf. We opted for the Kleine Nurnberger Bratwurstchen, Pommes mit 3 Sossen, and a small German salad of shredded cabbage, dill cucumber, pickled beet and marinated carrots. I heard from a relative that Speisekammer is under new management, and the biggest change I noticed is that there are far too few servers. Our server had a ginormous section - and had to cover both tables outside the restaurant and indoors. Wow- not sure what happened to this place as it used to be a favorite for beer and food. Beer has remained good, but the potato pancakes and gravlax- awful. The potato pancakes if you can call them that are now shredded sticks deep-fried with zero moisture and they explode upon cutting into them. It didn't help that I found a hair in one of them. Not sure what happened to the kitchen last night, but after ordering our beers it took 45 minutes just to get our two basic dinner orders. My side salad dish was forgotten.
