A pretty darn good German restaurant. What is excellent (most of the stuff) is really excellent. What is just good is certainly good in its own way. * Dishes of note: An amazing German meat loaf topped with a dark onion sauce to beat the band. Fried fish way better than most fried fish places. Destination quality. Sauerbraten is always a subtle pleasure at best, (even jamming massive ginger snap flavor into beef does not change the taste that much). Their sauerbraten maxes out on the ginger snap flavor to the extent that such things are possible. * Dishes of okay: Potato pancakes have a nearly perfect texture - but don't taste like much. Onions, anybody? Char, anybody? They offer applesauce instead, but I can eat applesauce at home. The schnapps at the bar are the sweet mass brand kind- not the robust strong brandies that represent the really good German Schnapps. On the plus side, they do have a fine California pear cider which pairs extremely well with the cheap sweet pear brandy. Necessity can be the mother of some pretty good invention. Their bread is meh. But they serve it with some fantastic herbed butter. * Entertainment You would expect German entertainment at a German place. No Oompah bands. (Yay!) No German metal or German electronica. (Aawww!) Instead the music is USA - all the way. The night we were there there was a Jerry Jeff Walker wannabe - with awful patter and pretty good guitar stylings. (Actually very very good guitar stylings when you could get the guy to stop talking and play his instrument. He was not entirely untalented.) It was hard for me to wrap my mind around Texas Country Music in a schnitzel place - and I wasn't drunk enough not to care. * The crowd was old enough - and colorful enough - to be people who had known Jerry Jeff Walker when he was young. Frankly, about a quarter of the crowd was old enough to have known Stephen Foster when he was young. So the place felt a little bit like eating wiener schnitzel at the old age home. But they were definitely hip oldsters - * Overall, The German food is really good. If anything doesn't feel quite right, you can always dump your head in two or four or six tankards of pilsner - and see if things still look the same way when you come out the other side. Driving back from Napa, I wanted to hit up a German Restaurant for lunch. After a search on yelp, I found Speisekammer in Alameda. I have to say for the most part I was impressed. My mom is German and I lived there for about 5 years and have to say it's pretty authentic. The sauerkraut was top notch. Their recession menu is reasonable and the portions are just right. They have a nice interior and outdoor seating if you bring your dog. Service was pretty good considering there was only one waitress and it was surprisingly busy for a Sunday afternoon. My only complaint was that I ordered the bratwurst sandwich and the bread was over toasted. Normally, I would have sent it back, but I wasn't super hungry, so I just pulled the brat and sauerkraut out and ate that with some bread that was on the table in a basket. I came in last night with a friend after our tour of Christmas Tree Lane in Alameda. My friend really likes German food and so we were happy to see that the place was far from packed. We waited about 5 minutes to be seated, and it just seemed like server after server just kept blowing us off. Then we got a table in the front of the restaurant and the it took us another 15 minutes to have someone take our order. I don't if it was red-headed stepchild night at the 'kammer, but if there food wasn't delicious I would question my sanity for choosing this place for a nice pre-Christmas meal. I was super excited to find out there was a German restaurant in the East Bay- I thought, "I wouldn't have to drive across the bridge to Schnitzelhaus just to get my schnitzel on!". Alas, I am wrong. I have yet to try this Walzwerk, and at this point I'm a little hesitant to. Although my BF and I showed up and it was quite bustling, we were seated almost instantaneously. Next to a very drafty door and window. In December. Hmm, ok. I was still happy we got seated so quickly. Boyfriend ordered a liter of Hof Brau, I got a raddler for old time's sake and just cuz it was even on the menu (haven't had one of those since hanging out with my Austrian friend). We got sloshed at the Hof Brau tent at Oktoberfest in Munich and the liter he ordered here tasted just fine, fresh and non-skunky. We ordered potatoe pancakes to share, and they were good and crispy: like a pile of shoestring Pik Nik potatoes pressed into little patties. I like my potato pancakes to have a little more chewiness to them but the home made applesauce it came with went great. My weinerschnitzel fell flat once again, and I'm beginning to think that I'm never ordering it from any place other than Schnitzelhaus. I even had it in Germany, and it wasn't so good, but maybe my tastebuds and palate were a bit askew from having the flu. It lacked the little hint of seasoning and spices that bring out the flavour of veal. They gave me two slabs of schnitzel, and they were big, but it was so flat that there was definitely more breading than meat. it was pounded so thin that parts of it were too dry and it was overly chewy, ruining the veal. Maybe if they left the veal in one piece but didn't pound it out as flat, it would be much, much better. My boyfriend's sauerbraten was rather good, it came with some sort of round berry (elderberry? cranberry?) sauce- nice stewed meaty flavors, but it didn't wow me. The cabbage was a bit too sour and lacking in flavour- I don't know what Schnitzelhaus does to theirs, but it certainly is more palatable. Their spaetzle was on the dry side, like, pan fried dry, but that's just my tastes. I would come here if someone offered to drive so I can get lit off beer, and then mow down some food without really caring too much about how it tastes. otherwise, it's worth the drive across the bridge to get my fix elsewhere. read more

Speisekammer does a superb job imitating a German setting and serves an assortment of authentic German food. There's a great outdoor patio for lunchtime and a beautifully adorned interior. I was incredibly impressed with their cheese and fruit platter: Käsebrett mit früchten. Top notch presentation and quality of cheeses. Each cheese had its own unique flavor, and the fruits helped cleanse the palette before trying another. HIGHLY recommended - this is what I'm coming back for. We also ordered the Wiener Schnitzel Sandwich (pork cutlet with lettuce/tomato/onion and horseradish sauce) and Wurstgeröstel (scrambled eggs with sausages). There was really nothing too special about these entrees, but they were HUGE portions (which explains why it's on the pricey end). I only ate half the sandwich - along with the fruit and cheese platter - and was stuffed. The entrees also come with your choice of German fries (they made sure to avoid the word French ha ha), roasted potatoes, or salad. What a lovely find this was. I really appreciate businesses that are sensitive to people with gluten and dairy allergies. Everything on the menu that is either gluten or dairy free (or both) has a G or a D next to it, to make it easy to identify. With specials of the day, they're happy to ask the chef about ingredients for you. Okay, down to the food. It's delicious. The fried potato pancakes are addictive, they come with a sweet and tart apple sauce for dipping. It could stand to have just a *tad* less oil, or maybe it just needs to be drained a little better after deep frying. I've had the pork chop and the bratwurst. The pork chop was surprisingly tender, more like a smoky ham taste, it was delicious. The bratwurst was divine, quite lean compared to most bratwurst I've had. The bed of sauerkraut was really special, it had a nice seasoned and spiced flavor to it. The vibe is really cool, old posters are on the walls and the ceiling is lined with beer steins that date back to the 1800s, all are for sale. Service has been consistently good. They have strange hours, be sure to check so you're not surprised. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars? Parking is an absolute nightmare. There's a very narrow alley-type lot with a handful of spaces, impossible to get in or out of without a dented car. That's if you're lucky to find a space there at all. I've been here so many times which shows how much I love this place. They never disappoint! Let me start by saying I've been to a similar more well known spot in the city (suppenkuche) which I assumed would be better, but nooooothing beats Speisekammer. Here's the food breakdown Bread and butter - comes with pumpernickel and homemade dinner rolls resembling softer ciabattas. The best part of this free starter is the garlic herb butter that comes with. AMAZING. Bratwurst plate - comes with a heaping serving of mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. The brats are juicy and salty serving as a perfect compliment to the mellow mash and tangy sauerkraut. Perfection people. Oh! And the mustard is so good slathered on everything. Mussels - usually these are amazing because the sauce is buttery garlicky and tangy. This time around the sauce was heavy on the white wine which I don't mind but it changed a flavor profile a bit. I'm being a snob but I still love it. Bread pudding - basically a huge matzo ball/ dumpling made with bacon bits and covered in a dark mushroom sauce. It's a good starter but best for sharing as it will take up space in your belly that should be filled with brats! Potato cakes - meh. I usually like spicy in my potatoes and these are pretty mild. Like a hash brown. The apple sauce is the best part of this. Spatzel Mac n cheese - oddly on the sweet side, but cool to try at least once to experience it. I enjoyed the texture of the spatzel. Beer- I've tried many and really enjoy the Oktoberfest beer. There is also a delicious pear cider on the menu too. Go for anything on the draught beer list and you won't be disappointed. The Bread Basket comes with some truly magical Herb Infused Butter. If their menu wasn't filled with delicious items, I'd be tempted to just keep ordering basket after basket of bread! Our party shared an order of Reibekuchen (Potato Pancakes with Apple Compote). The pancakes were crispy on the outside, soft inside, and the apple compote was sweet with a subtle honey mustard kick to it. The Bratwurst Sandwich (Grilled Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, German Mustard on a Toasted Baguette) was excellent. The spicy German Mustard was a bit overpowering at times, making my sinuses flair, but it was so good, I didn't even mind! I devoured the sandwich and the side of Roasted Potatoes with Bacon. Maybe it's better f you go early, but it tends to be a fairly grownup crowd. It's pricey, so we don't go here as much as we might. I mean, you can't really get out of there for less than 70 or 80 bucks for a family of 4 and that's getting up there for me. Not great for the vegetarian or light meat eater crowd unless you love spaetzle (and, theirs is pretty good). I tried fish there once, and think you're better off with the meat or the aforementoned spaetzle. The pea soup was alright, a little bland. Nice little side salads. For German food, it's actually pretty good overall. My kids will only eat the potato pancakes there, but, they're picky. Worth a try if you haven't been. I had a great first experience with German food here at Speisekammer. Although it took 4 minutes for the hostess to come round and get us seated, we were excited to see what was in store for us. The place is very clean, dim, and comfortable. When we got seated the bus boy got us water and bread right away. There were two types of bread in the basket: a soft roll and pumpernickle. With the bread came this very yummy butter with garlic. The first page of the menu featured the daily specials and if you glance to the last page you will see the recession menu that features select entrees at half portions for less than $10. We ordered the soup specials: Creamy Parsnip Soup & Mushroom Leek Soup. The Creamy Parsnip was not my favorite since I didnt even know what parsnip was! I moved on to the Mushroom Leek...YUM!!! It was good kind of salty and very savory. We also ordered the Side Salad and the Käsebrett mit Brot und Früchten (assorted/domestic fruit/cheese platter). They offer four types of salad as a side for $3 but you can get the combo which was what I got. It came with beets, cucumber, cabbage, carrots, and romaine lettuce. It was in a very small plate (the size of a saucer) and had a vinagerette type dressing. No complaints! The cheese platter had brie, swiss, white/regular cheddar, munster, grapes, apples, and pineapple. Cant go wrong there! On to the entree! I got the Jagerschintzel (recession size). The Jagerschintzel is a sauteed pork loin in mushroom sauce wth spatzle. Spatzle is a german pasta. The pork loin was cooked perfectly and the sauce was yummy. The spatzle was interesting...it looked like a German version of Italian Gnocchi. It tasted like buttery dough (I had to add salt). Since I ordered from the "recession" menu, my portion was half sized...thank god I didnt order the full size! It was tons of food as it is! Finally got around to coming back, and I wasn't disappointed. They've still got an awesome beer selection. I also got to try out the escargot this time around. It's made a bit differently than I'm used to, not quite as soaked in garlic and butter, and served atop mushrooms. The mushrooms really accentuate the earthy flavor of the snails, which can be too much for some people, but I didn't mind it. I also was reminded about their recession menu, which is basically half orders of their main entrees. Awesome idea. My roommate took advantage of it to get two different entrees. Hahaha... I got the Sauerbraten ($9.75 Beef Tri Tip marinated in Red Wine and Spices braised and with Red Cabbage & Spätzle). The beef was very tender, meshed well with the softened cabbage. The spatzle was better than I remembered, much more flavor this time around. My return to Speisekammer was great, and I will definitely be back again sometime. read more

Took my mom here for Mother's Day - had a wonderful sandwich and they have a great selection of beers to chose from. Definitely can be crowded on the patio, and when we were there, there was a really annoying family with 3 misbehaving children (not the restaurants fault obviously). Would recommend! read more

Took my dad here after a Warriors game and the food didn't disappoint. Ordered schnitzel with a side of the mushroom gravy and cheesy spatzl. My dad got the bratwurst. The food was excellent. Didn't give it that last star because of the slow service (we sat outside and I feel like we were forgotten about) and weird parking lot (you have to reverse your way out onto the street). I'll go back for the food though and hope for faster service. read more
