We are so lucky in Alameda to have this great authentic German restaurant. If you like hearty, delicious and slightly unusual dishes--and beer--this is the place to go. I had the Wiener schnitzel; it is pounded thin, breaded and fried so it's crispy and juicy, accompanied by a pickled vegetable salad which brightened up the taste of the meat. Oh, and spaetzle!!!My husband had Sauerbraten(steak with an onion-red cabbage jam) that was delicious. We also had an order of crispy potato pancakes which come with a little cup of homemade applesauce. The restaurant has a great Biergarten vibe-cozy and warm with lots of decor you'd expect from a German place. They are also a great neighborhood gathering place. Friends were craving German food, so we decided to check this spot out! I had never been before, but saw it had great reviews and was very excited to try a few different things on the menu. I was really craving spatzle so decided to get that as my main, and a side order of the German cabbage and potato salad to share. My boyfriend got the pork belly, another friend got the pork chop with mushroom gravy and another friend got the mean in red wine sauce (should cross reference the menu for names!). We also got an order of the potato latkes to split. Apparently, we were starving. The food did not disappoint. It was ready on time and still warm by the time we brought it back to Oakland to eat. It came with some German side salads of pickled veggies, which were actually a hit and so delicious - full of cabbage, beets, carrots, etc. This was one of my favorite things to munch on to balance out some of the heavier menu items. The pork belly was also absolutely amazing - cooked so perfectly, and tasted so tender. It came with pretzel bread dumplings which were delicious - I honestly could've ordered a side just of these to enjoy as well. The sauce it was all soaked in was so tasty as well and we both cleared our plates! The spatzle was tasty but could've used a tiny bit more flavor - maybe a slightly stronger cheese - but it was still so delightful and nice to share with the group. I might try it with the ham next time which seemed like a great option! The German cabbage and potato salad were also wonderful. The cabbage was excellent and so flavorful - I almost ate the entire side dish myself and enjoyed it the next day as well! The potato salad was perfect, with a nice vinegar instead of mayo. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their food as well and we did not end up with as many leftovers as we originally expected. The people who went to pick it up also mentioned that it seemed like a great spot to go when outdoor/indoor dining is an option so I'm looking forward to doing that sometime in the future as well. read more

Oktoberfest was a blast or in German speak...Ehrfürchtig! Since it was October I found it only fitting to get my brunchy brethren together for a German feast. Located near the hub of Alameda yet on a side street, this place is literally a neighborhood favorite nestled amongst well-kept craftsmen style homes on Lincoln Ave. Parking was a breeze so I arrived early and grabbed a great spot by the door. As I was waiting I had a great time people watching and looking over the menu. Some of the people around me were arriving in Leiderhosen and other traditional Oktoberfest threads. I especially dug the gents especially them being every ethnicity other than German oh and the legs, show them legs! Once I gathered myself from a semi-voyeristic mindset the gang arrived and I got more than serious about the food. On the menu was pretty much every great German dish I could think of revolving around sausage of course. After a rather indecisive stroll, I decided on an appetizer to buy me some time. Pommes mit 3 Sossen was where my finger landed and was a great choice. The fries were perfectly crispy and played well with the three sauces however I was given a fourth and it was equally pleasing. Somehow the fries cleared my mind (but cluttered my arteries) and I was able to secure the Weiss Wurscht (Bavarian White Veal Sausage with a pretzel with Bavarian Sweet Mustard). I was very pleased with the whole dish and who doesn't love a genuine German pretzel?! I thought this was going to be it but my favorite Frau Katherine F suggested dessert so we all decided to split two Apple Streusels amongst the four of us. The food/drink is usually good, but the wait is nearly always excessively long. Last time I was here, about 2 weeks ago, we were there for 2 hours. My food was dried out from sitting under the warmer, as was one of my dining buddies. She ordered the burger, medium rare. The patty was completely grey and the bun was so dried out that it crumbled in her hands when she tried to pick it up. Our third person's meal was hot and fresh and was likely the hold up. (Our server comped the burger ) Kitchen needs to figure out a way to coordinate the meal prep. read more

This restaurant is the real deal. I have been to Germany (Bulvaria) several times and the food here is pretty authentic. I recommend lunch or dinner, both are good. I love saptzel and theirs doesn't disappoint. Some nights there is music, which is pretty cool. Definitely a gem in the East Bay. read more

Decided to try this place because I bought a Groupon for it. This was my first German restaurant and I was excited. Walking in, I didn't expect it to be overaly overcrowded. We were the 2nd in line to wait for a table and I'm glad I made a reservation. All the workers seemed to ignore us while they run around looking they they have their heads cut off. I didn't feel welcomed, which to me was not a good thing since I had high expectations being that this is my first German restaurant I've tried. Finally we got seated....in one of the worse places of the restaurant, next to the register and where they place all the used plates. The entire night we heard loud noises of dishes being thrown in the container, not a pleasant thing to hear on top of everyone else talking. I felt like I couldn't even hear myself think. The menu looked appetizing and the dishes were a reasonable price. We orders the family meat plate to share because it looked like more then enough as well as a few side dishes. On the back of the menu it states that they offer one basket of bread and if you wanted more it would be an additional cost. OK...so where's the bread? The tables alongside us got theirs. Didn't really see our waiter until our food arrived, and I asked her for it. I'm not sure if you get it automatically or you have to ask for it. Baked with caramelized onions, asiago and Parmesan cheese (basically the German version of mac & cheese), this dish is a wonderful bit of decadence, especially with the addition of some bacon.Paired with an ice cold beer and a dinner roll, it's a wonderfully delicious and comforting meal. The flavors were good, but the beef was slightly dry. We may as well have ordered the Gegrillte Fleischplatte. My brother ordered a sizable salad that was pretty good. Had the wiener schnitzel sandwich with the salad combo side. Outstanding. The salad was delicious and the sandwich was perfect. Super crusty baguette. Like shred the roof of you mouth crusty. In Alameda for the antique fair and yelped this place and what a great little find. We did have to wait about 30 minutes for a table. I'm more of an IPA guy and they did offer one of " their" IPAs which I enjoyed. Gotta say I really enjoyed their Kloster Heller Bock a lot. Food is authentic German. But if put your head down your peripheral vision is limited, hence the " I didn't see you" excuse works Even after that I had to call him in a "raised voice" to get his attention. So what if the food is great, which it was. For whatever reason, the waiter had in ignoring you. It ruined the lunch I had. Two customers sat at the table next to mine. One of them went and got a waitress. I told them that was a good thing they immediately got a waitress. He had told me they were regulars at the restaurant and were familiar with my waiter's behavior. So if you go to Speisekammer's and your waiter is wearing a red Tesla baseball cap, immediately ask for another waiter. read more

The schnitzel was perfectly fried - crispy & not at all greasy. Weiss Wurscht - Bavarian White (Pork-Veal) Sausage with Pretzel & Sweet Bavarian Mustard. I loved Weiss Wurscht while in Munich & was happy to see it on the menu because traditionally this sausage is only served for breakfast. They even had the correct pairing mustard for it. I finally got to try this place after years of saying I would! And it was everything I ever thought of... Good beer selection a good selection of food..not to much not to little.. Came here with a buddy and it was just nice to have something different to try and this place came to mind so why not? I had the stuffed cabbage and it blew my mind....it was nicely cooked very moist, so flavorful and to top it off was this tomato cream sauce... To add more flavor to it! Came with a side of mashed potatoes and that hot the spot... My friend got the boar an it was a special that day.. I haven't had German food since my grandfather's 80th birthday, and that was in 98. That is almost embarrassing to say that it's been that long. My bff's birthday was today, so she choose to go here for lunch. Our server was wonderful and attentive. She brought us water, and gave us time to mull over the menu. She was patient as we were having a tough time deciding on what to order. I has the grilled salmon with dill sauce on a bed of sautéed spinach and onions with aside of mashed potatoes. It was AMAZING!!! My friend had the small sausage the salad, which I got to eat all the pickled beets!!! Delicious!!! She also had the potato??? Then the waitress came out with a delicious apple dessert with ice cream. Needless to say it was all delicious, and we also enjoyed the outdoor seating before the rain comes on Friday. read more

The menu is large and has options for everyone, we tried a platter to share, mostly sausages, kraut, & cabbage. Tasty, but in all honesty the hit of the meal was the MUSTARD! The mustard they offer is addictive, we bought a jar, and I have been ordering it on amazon since. The place gets really busy, so service was a little slow, but this is a place to sit back and enjoy. We lucked out and went on a night with an outstanding band that rocked the place. I was surprised by the talent and the whole restaurant was rocking, all types of people and ages enjoying themselves. Good beer. Great food. Service - meh. The Raddler - was great, good beer, topped with limeade. It's worth checking out the establishment just for this one item. The Spatzle with cheese (Gratinierte Kasespätzle), was great, a solid 4.5 star item, while i've had this dish prepared differently i cant say it was necessarily better. Here it was more cheesy and hearty as opposed to more saucy and oniony. The other items that folks in our party ordered all looked delicious and no one complained. However - service was slow. And inability to rectify the situation by the staff costs the place 2 stars. Let me illustrate my point - last week i was at Rogue, getting a burger and a beer. The waitress who was dealing with the Saturday lunch rush (almost no empty tables in the place) was not super fast with the check. With no comment or prompting from us - she returned with the check, apologized for being late with the check and comped the last beer. That doubled her tip and earned her employers 5 stars. Fast forward to this Sunday at Speisekammer. The first order of beers and the complimentary rolls were a bit slow - but no big deal. Our food came out a reasonable time after being ordered. Half way thru the meal we ordered a 2nd batch of drinks. Fifteen (15) minutes into waiting we inquired to make sure the order was not forgotten, after getting a curt response we were happy that they weren't forgotten. Additional 15 minutes later Renee, was over it and asked to cancel her beer order. Unfortunately that was the same time it arrived. At this time we found out that one of the first beers that arrived was not what was ordered (since it didnt match the repeat order), but thats ok (as both beers were delicious). Having brought the 2nd belated beer order the server informed that she will have to dump it out, so we kept it as others at the table were willing to take it. However - in general restaurant unwritten rules - once the employee of the establishments states that they'll need to get rid of something and a patron instead accepts it - the implication is that the patron is not being charged. OTHERWISE YOU SAY - I WILL STILL NEED TO CHARGE YOU FOR IT. When the check arrived i pointed out the additional beer -but the server stated that the order has been canceled after it was filled. And proceeded to keep it on the check. Overall the experience was OK. But i've seen better service - many times. As far as i know this is the only German restaurant on the island, and its not too bad even though on the pricey side, but because of the service experience i may or may not give it another try. read more
