Just dined here with a large family party of 12 people, including 2 young kids. Overall the food was very good, though the portions on some dishes were a bit small. The service was quite good, especially considering we were a large party. I would have given 4 stars BUT... there is no changing table available anywhere in the restaurant. I was forced to change my toddler on the floor in the ladies room while kneeling in my sundress. This was an uncomfortable experience for me, my child, and the 5 or so ladies who came in to use the restroom during that time. I recognize and understand that not all restaurants are appropriate for young kids. But I would expect that a restaurant that specifically references options for children on their menu to be more accommodating, especially since there were probably about 5 other kids in diapers during our seating. read more

I reviewed this restaurant on Yelp before going. After checking in my reservation with the hostess I told her we were 3 people (instead of 4) and as she started showing us to our seats she ran into the owner and they quickly exchanged words, which made him back us up to the hostess stand at which point they quickly figured out whatever they needed to and we were then shown to our seats. Even though he had embarrassed us I still tried to be polite, but he had no remorse in his demeanor at that point. He averted his eyes to me as if we had done something wrong. We had a nice table by the window I must say but he had offended me twice at this point already. For appetizers we ordered the Suppli (Risotto Balls) and the Polpo (Octopus). (And I'm not just saying this because of the poor treatment thus far). The food is the most important. Neither were very good. Fried rice balls with a little bit of cheese and hardly any meat, served with decent sauce-pretty bland and not impressed (it should be awesome if you're gonna eat fried food!) Octopus-decent flavor but way too big of a portion (even for 2) for an appetizer-made me and my kid lose our appetites (not exaggerating) because we don't like to waste & immediately knew we'd have to. For dinner-2 of us had Fettuccine with seafood and my daughter order Lobster Ravioli (always wary about that-never tasted anything but cheese in "Lobster Ravioli" anywhere). Prior to ordering we tried to get feedback from the server about this but that was useless. Seafood in Philadelphia is way better (who knows why). The mussels in the fettuccine were only about a half inch long. How can that be at the Jersey shore? We're on the coast! Go to Villa de Roma on S. 9th st. in Philadelphia & you'll know what mussels should be. The homemade pasta was good but haven't they heard of olive oil? I'm not Italian, and I know how not to have pasta turn into one big clump. If you're gonna do Lobster Ravioli at the beach put some chunks of lobster in it (so I guess you get where I'm going with that). It was tasty ravioli but not tasty "Lobster Ravioli". My wife and I come to Stone Harbor every summer, a few times each season, and we have been dying to try Spiaggia. I am disappointed to say that it was a let down. The only good thing about our experience was the scallops we had for an appetizer. My pasta was horrible and stuck together and had barely any seafood in it, and my wife ordered a very expensive fish that was "filleted" table side. After it was butchered, the portion was so small it wasn't worth it. We contemplated trying to dessert to see if we could save the meal, then our server (who had been extremely fake (seeming like she was forcing a cheerful face to the point that it was painful and actually uncomfortable for us) ended the night for us,. We asked how the summer had been for the restaurant and she responded with something along the lines of how she had only been there for 3-4 weeks but the server who had trained her stole from her so she had been fired, and since then it's been much better............not exactly what we were asking for. Annie either has no filter, or no class, but I would be wary to the owners for keeping her on staff... she made both of us feel incredibly uncomfortable. I was hoping for a much better experience, but it just went downhill from the scallops to a bust at the end with "story time". read more

Found this restaurant on Trip Advisor while looking for a place to eat for a night out in Stone Harbor. Thought we would try it and were extremely pleased. Upon arrival, the owner greeted us and sat us immediately. We were there on a Monday night so it was not super busy. We asked our waitress for her recommendations and she was able to give them and give us reasons why she preferred these things. For me, this is one of the best things a waiter/waitress can do. For appetizers, we got the mussels with chorizo and gorgonzola and the special roasted beet salad. Both were very delicious. For our main course we got the Ciopinno and the Fettuccine with seafood. The Fettuccine was handmade and incredible. We did not get dessert because we were very full from our meals. The owner stopped by a few times to make sure we were taken care of. Our waitress was very friendly and checked on us just enough to ensure we had a great visit. We would totally recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice dinner out! read more

The food overall was good - some hit and miss. Nine of us went during restaurant week. I had an eggplant app that was to die for. My entree was chicken parm cooked to perfection with an amazing "gravy" (as I have learned over the past 4 years marina sauce is called). Cheesecake was light and delicious. My parents though didn't enjoy their meals, which is unfortunate. They had a cod dish and a sea bass dish that they said was just mediocre. The servers and the owner were as nice as can be. The food came out very, very, very slowly - about 50 minutes between apps to entree. And for the guests who were hearing challenged, they couldn't understand the conversation because it was quite loud - so I think that made their meal a little less enjoyable at a large table. Still, I would like to go back because personally, I enjoyed my meal! I just don't think I'll go with a large group of people. read more

As my name indicates, I am extremely Italian and as such very particular about my Italian restaurant choices. I am typically skeptical of most octopus dishes because they are often new-age Americanized versions of octopus. Let me tell you the octopus at Spiaggetta is- without exception- the *best* octopus that I have that I did not have to make myself. It is worth the trip- it's that good. The servers were delightful, the pasta fresh and delicious- I asked for the branzino served in the style of the salmon (a bit of a menu switcharoo) and without missing a beat the server said "Of Course we can do that." Midweek in the third week of September. Streets are empty and parking spaces plentiful on 96th St. We chanced on Spiaggetta and were quickly seated far from a large group. Our waiter was attentive and happy to change Gorgonzola to goat cheese on the huge pear-arugula salad. The food was excellent! We shared the generous portions of salad, grouper on saffron risotto with bay scallops and -recommended- tender pappardelle pasta with shrimp. The owner sent over a complimentary dessert of delicious cannolis. Typical high-ish prices for the shore, but we were well-satisfied on well-prepared dishes with excellent service. read more

We arrived at the restaurant seeing it was busy and thought that would translate into wonderful food and service. We were told there was a 30 minute wait for a table and was thrilled when the wait was only 15 minutes.... then the nightmare began! We waited 20 minutes for the server to come to the table; asked for water to drink. That took another 10 minutes to arrive. She finally took our order... 1 appetizer and 2 entrees; waited for water to be refilled and finally received bread about 5 minutes after the water, so in 35-40 minutes after ordering we were served 2 glasses of water and bread. The calamari appetizer finally arrived; then the very long wait for the entrees. They were finally served about 90 minutes after ordering. The pasta was not homemade and while both dishes were tasty; they were not exceptional to warrant the pricey charges. We sat and waited and waited for the server to check on us..... never was asked if the food was okay and she never brought more bread even though we did ask for it when the appetizer was served. Finally got her to bring a check; so from when we were seated to departing the restaurant was a total of almost 2 hours.... a nightmare. There is definitely something wrong with the kitchen service and the wait staff ignores the customer; probably do not want to explain the long delays. I must say once during the long wait for the entrees; the server swept by the table and told us " you're up next".... and we still waited another 15 minutes! There are too many good restaurants in the Stone Harbor area that eating here will never be repeated. read more

They looked like the frozen kind... Still love it here even after 2 years since our last visit. Grandma wasn't in the back cooking this time, but the food was still great. The owner personally came out to our table to make sure we were being accommodated, and even had the chefs redo my aunt's Branzino in the kitchen because he didn't like how they cooked it the first time and wanted it to be just right. This is someone who prides himself on his restaurant and deeply cares about his guests' dining experience. I opted for a seafood without pasta this time and ordered the Grouper with saffron risotto, bay scallops, and cippolinis (which I later found out are basically like pearl onions). All the flavors perfectly melded together in one and my grouper was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The risotto was unique on my palate and there was a decent helping of scallops with it. I tried a bit of my mom's lemon-infused linguine and it was fantastic. Next time we visit Stone Harbor for our bi-annual family girls' trip, we'll absolutely be coming back here. read more

We went there for Restaurant Week. this evening. I ordered off the Restaurant Week menu my friend ordered off of the regular menu. Well talk about tiny portions for $30.16?!?!. The salad was two yes two pieces of romaine lettuce. I ordered the sea bass with zucchini risotto. It was appetizer size. Then out came the cheesecake. I asked and it was not made in house. You could tell. My friend ordered the the carbonara. which he said was not that good and that it was dry. The only thing that was any good was the antipasto. Overall, good service, but the food was a "C-". I will not be returning. These owners think they can pull one over because they get a lot of one and done customers. The way you build a successful restaurant business is to give a good consistent product so your patrons want to return and try other things on the menu. Not make as much profit as possible without satisfying your customers. I think I'l make myself a sandwich now because I am still hungry after spending $30 on dinner. read more

It was quite a relief to read some of these reviews and know I wasn't the only one who had issues with the insane amount of time it took to get our food to the table. Wow. Unreal. Appetizer - 30 minutes and it was a cold appetizer...took nothing but putting it on the plate. Thinking ahead, we told the waitress that we would take our entrees as soon as they were ready as opposed to waiting until we finished our first course. Still, another 30 minutes.It's just unacceptable. We had a fish entree and the ravioli. These dishes should take 15 to 20 minutes max. Again, just absurd. Ok, so then at last we were looking forward to actually eating this stuff, especially the home made pasta that is their signature dish. Well, let's just say it was a pretty messy signature. Not good. No flavor at all really and, frankly, tasted more like gourmet store bought than fresh. In fact, I've had better store bought from Whole Foods. The fish was very bland and a bit dry, but all this sure didn't stop them from their inflated Jersey Shore pricing. Finally, the waitress apologized for the excessive wait and insisted we talk to the manager/ owner? (even though I was fine with just leaving and never coming back). On the way out, he reluctantly apologized for the wait by saying "sorry for the wait." When I responded by saying it was a pretty long wait, he pushed back, claiming it was 47 minutes from the moment we were seated until our entrees came out. Besides being unnecessarily combative and nailing his own coffin shut, he was also just plain wrong. I timed it. 63 minutes to the second. So, needless to say, I will never be back there agin and neither will anyone I know. Everyone - we should not keep patronizing establishments that don't truly serve their customers....every customer. There's plenty to eat in Stone Harbor. Mostly I recommend going to Donna's for some fresh fish and seafood and cooking it yourself on the grill. Yum. read more

This place is a hidden gem. We had dinner there last night and couldn't have been happier with everything we received. We ordered the halibut, which was perfectly cooked in a delicious beurre blaunc sauce, the homemade seafood ravioli, which was expertly made, and a tender flat iron steak. The chef here knows how to cook, (s)he knows the ingredients well and knows exactly what to do with them. Nothing is wasted or over thought at this restaurant. They advertise on their website that spiaggetta means "little beaches" in italian, but dining there also means little portions...little flavor ...a little attitude from our waiter. We arrived with a party of 4 for 7:15PM reservations, but we weren't seated until 7:45PM. Our waiter had no personality. He seemed bothered by my asking him to repeat two of the entree specials. When we asked about appetizer recommendations, he had a blank stare and walked away saying he'd be back. We decided to forgo the appetizers and just ordered our entrees. I ordered the Branzino. The fish portion was so small, I'd be surprised if it weighed 3 ounces. It was served over a very small polenta cake and 2 micro-thin planks of zucchini. The fish, polenta cake and zucchini we're all flavorless ($34). My wife and sister ordered the Farmhouse, zucchini, eggplant and tomatoes served over spinach Fettuccini with ricotta. Both commented that the sauce was off-putting. The eggplant was over-fried thin strips, hard and weird in texture and the pasta was over-cooked. There were few zucchini and only two grape tomatoes in the entire dish ($27 each). My daughter was the only one who liked her dish, Lobster Fra diavalo, but the lobster portion was very small and the sauce was average ($36). Overall, the experience was nothing to write home about. Over-priced, under-sized portions, with no flavor. Quite forgettable. Sad to say that the bread and dipping sauce, as well as the BYOB wine that I brought, was the best part. I have no clue why there are three 2 star ratings from last summer - maybe that is when they first opened? I've been here several times since mid-May including for a large rehearsal dinner. Every single dish has been perfect, in fact the dishes at Spiaggetta are BETTER than my favorite $$$$ Italian restaurants in NYC. I had a wonderful experience at Spiaggia and will definitely be returning soon! I went with a group of 6, so I was able to sample many of the dishes. The mussles and scallop appetizers were delicious, and the presentation of the dishes was lovely. They offered a dover sole as a special (from what I understand, it is regularly offered) which was fileted table side by our very friendly server. It was one of the best seafood dishes I have had in awhile, as it was prepared very simply and the fish spoke for itself. The atmosphere of the restaurant is pleasant, and the owner gives your dining experience a very personal feel by coming to each table and asking how you are enjoying yourself, genuinly concerned that each of his customers are happy. This was an unusual surprise, as you don't usually see the management at a restaurant, let alone get a chance to speak to them. All in all it was a great dining experience, the food (especially the home made pastas was a treat, the service was professional and kind, and I definitely recommend eating here to anyone in the area!
