I grew up having dim sum every weekend as a kid, and spent many years in Hong Kong doing the same. So I'm *thrilled* there is dim sum in Eugene now! Dim Sum places range from cheap and greasy (like the main place in PDX on 82nd) to delicate and high end. Spice n steam seems like it's in the middle and leaning towards the higher end. The dishes we tried were fresh, light, and--this is kind of a big deal--NOT overly salty! It's really common in cheap dim sum places to be reeling from salt and grease and MSG after, but not so here. Standouts were siu mai and lotus wrapped sticky rice. Both were classic and fresh. The tea was also excellent. The steamed bao we tried had good flavor but were a little wet and i hope they get packed with more filling in the future. A few tips for dim sum newbies: -- Plan on 2 dim sum per person, then add more as you go along. Our group of two started with 4 and ended up with 5, and it was the perfect amount for us. -- dim sum service often works on a "zone defence" system rather than "man-to-man" so if a different server comes by each time, don't worry about it. And don't be shy about waving to get someone's attention! 5 dim sum and tea came out to $27 (for 2 people, before tip). I'm okay with that given the fact that the food was good and I've been waiting for dim sum in Eugene for years! I look forward to making it a regular place, and hope lots of other people do too. read more

We don't have to go to Portland anymore for dimsum and we are excited about this new entry to our city. We went during opening week and it was packed with people and more waiting. Wait staff were probably not ready for the crowds but then it was the first week. Owner John was apologetic about the delay while he hosted, cleared tables, and entered orders into the computer. We wanted to try the dimsum as well as some entrees so we ordered the Shrimp and the pork dumplings, very tasty chicken feet, shrimp noodle roll, delicious wonton soup, and yummy salted fish fried rice. Each dish was authentic and well presented. We heard that they will be adding some steam carts soon and if so there will be even more delicacies to choose from. We wish john, his father and their family much success as we have waited almost twenty five years for the real thing. read more

I have never experienced service so horrible in my life. My boyfriend and I wanted to try something new for our anniversary and had heard great things about the food here so we decided to try it out. When we walked in there was no one at the front to seat us so we waited about 5 minutes before someone came to seat us. We were not given menus or asked if we wanted anything to drink. After waiting about 20 minutes for someone to bring us menus and water we finally stopped the man that seated us and he went to grab us some menus and water. We decided what we wanted and waited another 20 minutes. By this point we were starving and were about ready to leave. We once again had to stop an employee walking by our table to have our order taken. We waited about 30 minutes for our food then they brought us half our order and said the rest would be out soon. Another 20 minutes later we were beyond ready to leave and for the third time asked a random employee where our food was. He went into the kitchen and came back out with the other entree which was supposed to come with rice. I let him know that we didn't get the rice and he said they had to make more so it was going to be another 5 minutes. 20 minutes later he brought us the tiny bowl of rice. I asked him if we could get some soy sauce and he said yes. After he walked away we never saw him again so my boyfriend got up and grabbed the soy sauce off an empty table. We did not finish our food but we knew we were never going to get boxes so we left it there which I hated doing. We waited for the check which of course never came so we had to go to the front and look for an employee AGAIN. Still to this day we have no idea who our waiter was supposed to be. I heard their service got better from last time we went. So we gave it another try for our lunch. We sat down and waited for more than 5 minutes before I called the waiter to order foods. After order we waited for another 12 minutes or so. Not a good experience, even in a weekend in the Spring break. In addition to some typical dim sum dishes, we tried their lunch special Shredded pork with hot garlic source (鱼香肉丝) this time. It was not as good as Kung Fu Bistro or Legend of Szechuan. The pork was 4 or 5 time bigger then they were supposed to. They were 肉条 instead of 肉丝. Both of my kids thought their dim sum had pathetically small portions, compared with those in Portland, Seattle, or Bay area. It is probably our last time there. If you really like dim sum, I would recommend driving to Portland - better dim sums with better price. read more

This was first dim sum we have had since moving from SF bay area 5 years ago and we were very excited. The food was fantastic however starting with our cups of soup, they were served almost cold. When asked to heat them up they were brought back still only warm, not hot. Food from our order also forgotten, we had to remind waiter twice. The servers are very friendly and courteous but seemed overworked. We will go back in a month or so to see if there is improvement as food is great. read more

We were the only people in there besides one other table. Took five minutes to be brought waters and then watched the server go back and forth between the kitchen and the other tables four times before he finally remember to come take our order. We ordered fried rice, were asked "what protein would you like with that?" And then when we said none the server said "so just vegetables then?" seemingly implying they came with the fried rice. But no. Apparently fried rice with vegetables is an extra $3, so our bill for that order was $10.95 instead of the expected $7.95. When we questioned this at first the server claimed that the $7.95 option wasn't even served in the restaurant?? And then later returned with the menu to claim that we had in fact clearly ordered the vegetable option not just the plain. Awkward and unfortunate and the food wasn't worth the prices. At noon today, the place was empty. We ordered the lunch special. Eggplant was a generous serving and very tasty although maybe too oily/rich. Made from traditional miniature Asian eggplant sliced lengthwise, not chopped up Italian eggplant. The hot & sour soup was the best I've tasted. Wood ear mushrooms especially tender. Veggie spring rolls perfectly fried. Service was fine, but the place was cold inside. I will be back for take-out. I vote for giving this place a chance. Eugene needs it to succeed. read more

When I first experienced Spice and Steam, I was not impressed with the quality of their food. However, in the last 3 months the staff has improved and expanded the menu significantly. Now, each dish is excellent, and the selection is wide. Specifically, I enjoy the dumpling soups (both normal and with chili oil), the dim sum varieties, the spicy Sichuan lamb dishes, and the unconventional specialty dishes. This is a nice addition to the Eugene restaurant scene. read more

We went there for the first time because other yelpers thought it was the best dim sum. We are dim sum fanatics. Nothing was good. There was no bbq pork in the steamed and baked buns, the shu mai was cold and the bbq pork ribs were not BBQ ribs. We ask them why they did not look like BBQ ribs and they said this it their version of the ribs. They looked like pieces of boiled chicken. We will not be going back. read more

The food were good but the service needs a lot of improvement. There were no metal spoon and fork for those customers who had difficulty using chopsticks. Especially when you order a fried rice. This a restaurant not panda express. Also the price were bit pricey for a small chef specaials servings. The servers were all over the place and prolly they should be assigned per section. And no serving spoon too. We used the soup utensils as a spoon coz they gave us plastic small spoon. I also saw people doing same thing. But the dancing chicken is delicious. Overall, this place is pricey, service needs lots of improvement and average food. I would rather drive to Wongs King in Portland and wait for an hour to get in. This is a review of the lunch service. This may be a much better place for dinner. I really wanted to give this location a good review, but I just can't. I love dim sum, but this place is too expensive for a normal dim sum brunch. First, the highlights. The dim sum we ate was pretty good. Properly cooked and flavored. They used american names for the food, so the 4 dishes we tried were shrimp dumplings, steamed chicken buns, morning shanghai dumplings (i think), and siu mai. I hadnt had chicken buns before, similar to char siu bao. The center was like a chicken meatball. The bread was steamed to perfection. The shrimp dumpling wrapper was good. The interior had decent flavor, but could have been a bit more interesting. The siu mai was quite good, and had those little red fish eggs on top. Im undecided about the soup dumplings. Pretty good. The place only opened a couple weeks ago so I can't hold the following against them, but I write it here to be complete. I hope if you visited a couple months later you will have a decent experience: Half of the dim sum options were unavailable. For reasons the server did not know, the staff did not do prep work for them the night before. The service was quite confused. It was difficult to be seated, dishes were sent to the wrong tables, and for the number of staff present, it was slow and disorganized. The food was slow to come out. We waited about 45 minutes for all 4 dishes to come out. This just does not work for dim sum. Now on to the main reason I only gave the place 2 stars for dim sum: the price for what you get is way way messed up. Dim sum is for lunch, and unless you are eating gourmet food, lunch prices should be 7-12 in Eugene. Each dim sum dish here was at least 4.75 and some were more. A normal group would typically want to have 2.5-3.5 dishes per person, since many dim sum dishes are quite small, and sometimes more if this is their big meal for the day. Add in 2$ for tea, and most people will be looking at a $15-$20 bill per person not including tip. And the quality of the dim sum just isn't there. Its average to good quality. They dont have any real specialty dishes, mainly the classics. I could go to Hawaii, where literally all food is imported, and go to a restaurant in the middle of their shopping district, with some of the highest real estate prices, order dim sum and have it show up in 10 minutes with some of the most delicious ingredients, and they would charge me $3.50 a plate for shrimp dumplings. at this restaurant they charge $5.75. Am I comparing apples and oranges here? I dont know, but I can't really afford to go back to this restaurant. read more

We went by again this morning and things were much improved. The entryway is still stark but no longer dumpy, and the restaurant itself was nicely laid out and smart looking. We were offered menus and tea as soon as we sat down. We ordered dim sum, though my son insisted on a plate of noodles. The noodles were delicious, very thin and tasty, spiced just right. The shrimp dumplings were fantastic; lotus wraps good, changdzou dumplings kind of bland. I really liked the radish patties with XO sauce, but my wife couldn't stand them; fine with my, I got to eat all of them. The egg tarts were delcious as well. read more

I love Chinese food! But this place made me very hungry on my birthday dinner. It was my first time to eat here since I'm new in Eugene. I was excited and hungry at the same time. My friends and I came in, and there's not much people inside but the waiter or owner or whoever that guy was (not in uniform) made us wait for like 15mins for the seat. And when we were able to get our table, we just thought of getting dimsums. We were literally looking at the menu for like 15mins more just waiting for someone to get our order. So this guy came with his phone on hand, taking our orders (he didn't even bother to get all those big menus occupying our table). We waited for another 25 mins for the food (note: only 4 dimsums). I'm a fan of shrimp dumpling. But they have the worst dumplings I ever had. All food not good. Maybe the one's we ordered but believe me, their food tasted like they just bought it from a grocery store and reheat them. read more

If you walk into Spice 'n' Steam and they only have one waitress working, walk out. Took 10 minutes to get seated, she didn't write down our order, and we only got half the food we wanted. Food throughout the restaurant was delivered sporadically, often every 10-15 minutes or so by one guy who I assume was the chef. When he delivered our lettuce wrap it was cold and the lettuce had so much rust on it that we didn't eat it. When we finally got the waitress' attention to come over - she asked if that was all and if we wanted our bill. When we told her we didn't get everything we ordered, she got angry. "You should have flagged me down," she said. No, you should have written down our order. Disappointing because the food is pretty good. There may be an opening there though because she asked a woman waiting to pickup a take-out order if she wanted a job. Hire more people and a couple more folks in the kitchen S&S and we may come back. read more

Last night My wife and I along with 5 other couples went here for dinner. As my wife's and her friend have birthdays a few days apart. We called in on Friday to make reservations, and asked for reservations for 6 couples on Saturday evening at 645pm. When we arrived at the restaurant we were greeted by a young lady that had no idea we even had a reservation as she said we didn't call to verify, WTF? She quickly ( and I mean this places version of quick, like 10 minutes) slid tables into a long line set out some plates and utensils, not 12 only 10. As this was going on we again asked if the bar was open and they said NO. Private party tonight, no one in the bar, empty what party I asked, oh later. Ok now lets think about construction in a restaurant, when should you do electrical work on the light fixtures on the ceiling, when closed. Not here as people were dining they were installing track lights right in the dining area, really I have never seen this before. I think it is against health code as dust and debris will come raining down all through the dining room. Ok this is Eugene and people have their own definition of being on time, we had one couple 15 minutes late and we waited to order as a courtesy, we looked at the 200 plus item menu and had a couple of beers while waiting. we finally got a chance to order with our new server ( 3 rd one since we got here) We had some people that are gluten free folks and one that is seriously gluten free (chrons). The server could not answer definitely if an item was gluten free, that became a problem as the menu says "Gluten free " options....but the employees did not even know how can a customer? So one couple decided not to eat but hung out with us and had a glass of wine and a beer, thank you for hanging with us. When the food came they had no idea who ordered what and walked around the table asking. We finally got the food and 50% was good and the balance not so good, actually horrible. All the while they are pulling all the tables and chairs out of the dining room and hooking up a strobe light bar at the N end of their dining room, and testing it right square into my eyes. When we finally got the checks divided up between the 6 couples they brought me my copy for my wife and I, 10 minutes later they still had not brought anyone else's. Oh you need to go to the counter to get the bill, so we did. Each and every bill ...all 6 were wrong! They attempted to overcharge each and everyone of us......That is wrong and they did not like be questioned about it. So I hope that when and if you try this place you have better luck than we did! read more

Eggplant entree was good, vegetarians are accommodated except NOT for dim sum. Skimpy servings of rice. Mango pudding dessert was definitely not worth $4.25 -- it was more like mango jello mold served in a plastic cup. Menus are xeroxed pages, I hope that's temporary. Excellent service. I have only been here for lunch to try some dim sum items. I wasn't sure what I was in for, since tend to eat vegan and figured I wouldn't be able to get much. There were actually a few items that were veggie but not much: we had radish cakes that were really good, interesting texture and flavor, if a tad oily. The lotus seed paste steamed bun was great but other than that I guess the food didn't really hit the mark with me. Since there were so few veggie options and I wanted to get the full experience, we also tried some soup dumplings, a bbq pork steamed dumpling, some shrimp dumplings, and a shrimp roll. The soup dumplings were quite good and had the best filling to dumpling ratio; the shrimp roll was really bland and had too much dough for the amount of shrimp. Same goes for the bbq dumpling, which I actually would have loved if the filling had been even remotely present. I literally don't think there was any meat in the one I ate, which is probably fine since I don't really eat meat but means I basically ate a big puff of plain dumpling (although it was my favorite dumpling dough of all that we tried). We also had spring rolls which were okay but were fried rather than fresh and a bit too oily. I might come back for dinner sometime but probably won't be back for lunch. Overall I wasn't very impressed but didn't hate it, and the price was right for how much food we ordered. read more

My first time and I was very happy that they have an extensive menu with some of the most authentic Chinese I had in a very long time. The food was okay (I wouldn't go back) but the noise from construction was deafening. We asked the server about it and he said it had been going on for week because they were building a bar. On the way in we passed a 5 gallon bucket of garbage within 8 feet of the entrance. The best part of our visit was the friendly waiter, Conner. read more

Their food is wonderful, fun up and coming spot. My partner and I love exploring their menu. I love that they are starting up a lounge with live music, my only complaint is their bar manager, he was intense to say the least...we will never sit at his bar. It was by far one of the worst bar experiences I've ever had, he made me a drink I didn't order and charged me for it....then didn't put any of the food we ordered in (and the drink was absolutely terrible). The rest of the place is amazing...I feel bad for the owners, they are doing such a great job with the place, but that man was just awful. read more

We are very excited about this new restaurant and plan to come again. They are understandably still working out some things but well on the way to our new favorite. The SNS house special fried noodle was perfect with chicken, beef and shrimp. The shumai dumplings were a bit underwhelming. They need to provide serving forks with big dishes. The Shanghai long buns were luscious! A dipping sauce would be nice with all the dumplings, not just certain ones. I like a bit of low sodium soy, so having that at the table would be nice. Last, a tea strainer on the tea pot would be ideal. I'm not a fan of pork buns, but these were AMAZING! The texture was unparalleled! Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!! read more

Food is one of my top hobbies and I was searching from few years to find a good Chinese restaurant. This is it. Just opened few months ago it is dim sum as goos as you can enjoy in the best dim sum restaurants in Taiwan and China. With my hobby it is hard to hear mea that I like the food in a restaurant, most of places it is hard to me to consider food what they serve. This place totally impressed me and I hope will keep this quality in time. In my opinion the cook is primary responsible for the quality of the food and of course the management. Glad to stumble upon such a legit dim sum restaurant! They serve most of the dim sum options for dinner as well, which is convenient. Besides some standard whitewashed dishes, there's also a wide range of other authentic Northern Chinese dishes. I just wish the tea was complimentary, since the teapots and tea cups are so elegant. The overall decorations, furniture, and silverware strike a nice balance between traditional Chinese and modern simplicity. Hands down the best dim sum place in the area. read more

The food has been excellent in the five times I've ordered from Spice 'n' Steam. I've found the service to be above and beyond as, when a Hungry Ducks driver delivered my order sans rice, a waiter at the restaurant jumped in his car to deliver rice and a bonus side order of spring rolls. read more

I grew up with dim sum in New York (yum cha if you have a Cantonese stepmother...:). I was waiting for this. I have been now three times and it gets better each time. I have been told they will be expanding their dim sum menu and even introducing the much beloved carts. I look forward to this. But for now it's a welcome addition to Eugene and I have high hopes. I am going back for dinner and will let you know how that goes too. But for now, let's support this place (I've had only very attentive and friendly service) and help it grow! read more
