    Mapo Tofu
    Charlie G.

I recently saw a comment that Wonder Wok had excellent Mapo Tofu. So I wanted to try it... Service was ok... The gentleman that helped me was very nice... and friendly. I ordered Mapo, and it came with some steamed rice. I ordered it with Medium Heat, since this my first time here, and I have no idea what their spice levels are like. My Mapo had just the tiniest bit of spice... not much at all. I tried the chili oil that was on the table... and found it lacking in heat also, but flavor was ok. Mapo was decent... not very MA LA for those know the term... hardly any numbing Sichuan peppercorn in it that I could taste. So this is more of an Americanized version.... not the Chengdu version. Lots of sauce, and a good portion of tofu... enough that I brought over half home with me for later. Rice was ok... edges were kind of dry, so it was not super fresh. But I would eat here again... there are a lot of traditional Sichuanese dishes on the menu, and they even have meat skewers that I will have to try. Next time I will order HOT (extra Ma La)... and see if that does the job.

This is a good wonton soup that is nice and filling and flavorful. Good service as well. Very nice atmosphere, and lovely dishes. I will have to try other dishes some time.

We've been here a few times lately since Noodle and Cafe changed owners (I want to give them some time before we try them again). Wonder Wok is the type of Chinese food that I like. Not too Americanized but something everyone in my family enjoys. We usually do takeout. We really enjoy the chow fun noodles and have been getting them each time. We tried the mu shu pork last time and that was fun. There were only about six pancakes that looked handmade but there never seem to be enough for how much filling there is! The yang zhou fried rice had the shrimp and ham chopped up small which worked well with the fried rice. The ham felt more like spam and didn't seem to have as much flavor. I was very excited to see that they had walnut shrimp but I was confused by what I got. Instead of the white sauce that usually comes with it, it seemed to be a sweet and sour sauce and there were bell peppers mixed in. I personally don't care for bell peppers so I was disappointed. We also got the orange chicken in the past and it came packaged separately from the sauce. It had more of a battered breading instead of the usual breading and the sauce was sort of like thickened orange syrup. We'll pass in the future. Overall, we like this place. Most dishes are $13-$17. They have a nice range of dishes and we'll probably keep trying things until we find our favorites. Ordering online is very convenient but it's tricky when the dishes don't have descriptions. Some do have a photo next to them though.

Honestly, thank god for authentic Chinese food…read more This is the best place you go to in Eugene for delicious handmade dumplings and noodles. Came in mid-afternoon on the weekend and the place was busy. We were seated immediately and received our food ~10 mins after ordering. We ordered the spicy and sour beef noodle soup, veggie dumplings, and scallion pancakes. There is an option to adjust the spice and numbing levels to your dishes. The food came out steaming. The veggie dumplings were flavorful and the wrapping was just thick enough to make 10-dumplings a hearty meal. The taste profile is similar to what you'd find in Northern China, and there is chili oil/vinegar/soy sauce at the table for you to make your own sauce. Scallion pancakes were deep-fried and on the thin side. They were more oily than the homemade ones I'm used to, but the crunch and flavor on them were nice. The sour and spicy beef noodle soup (opted spicy and numbing) was yummy. You can tell the noodles were handmade and they had a good bite to them. The beef was tender, the bok choy was a nice refreshing balance to the bold flavors of the dish, and the tea egg was a nice addition. The soup was quite sodium-heavy and oily, but the flavor was quite authentic and still yummy with the numbing spice kicking in towards the end. The interior is clean and has a viewing window at the front where you can see dumplings being made in real time.

Very flavorful and not too spicy - sichuan spicy dry noodle - mala spice which numbs the mouth a little but not overbearing - sweet and sour pork - I always order this dish. I was about to drive out to Portland area to find it but Yelp help me find this place that was only 6 mins away. Thank goodness! On the outside, I wasn't sure if this place was open, but as soon as I opened the door, I see there were people dining and the hostess greeted me right away. I informed her I wanted to do take out, so she handed me the menu. I was impressed that they had some dim sum items to choose from and was thinking this will be the best surprise for my daughter! I ordered some basics and the century egg and pork jook (congee). The wait wasn't long and the items were packed nicely. I wish they added some yellow mustard and shoyu to dip but maybe it's something I should have asked for. Overall, I'm am glad this place exists. The food is good, the flavors are there but be aware, price point is pretty steep but hey, it's probably the only place in Eugene that serves legit Cantonese dim sum and congee.

They use medium/smallish shrimp instead of the large, high-quality stuff. The intestine tract is left on some of the shrimp, leaving a muddy flavor that I just don't like. The chow fun was just okay. It is passable if you cook it longer and add more sauce at home.

The menu threw us a little at first, but the staff more than made up for it. They walked us through the options, suggested dishes, and helped us figure out the right portions for our group instead of just letting us over-order. That kind of attentiveness at midnight says a lot. The space is small and clean with a handful of indoor seats -- not somewhere you'd linger, but exactly what we needed. And the food was genuinely good, especially considering we were ordering from a limited late-night selection. If you're passing through and hungry after hours, this is a solid stop.

Not sure what to expect and with zero people in the restaurant, we trusted the Yelp reviews and proceeded to order a takeout meal. I'll just say that the food has a depth and complexity not found in most American Chinese restaurants (Jade Dumpling excepted). The dishes are still American style (to my uninformed mind), but ELEVATED, as they like to say on TV cooking competitions. Prices are reasonable if not very fair. I don't think anyone could be disappointed. Give them a go.
