    all breading, very little chicken
    Charlie G.

I love Chinese food, and I love Chinese American food. Today... I wanted the latter. I love sweet and sour chicken (especially with traditional sweet and sour sauce, not the overly sweet red "lollipop" sauce that many restaurants use. I decided to try Uncle Sun. When I walked in, I noted that it is very small... with limited seating, and pretty bare bones in the aesthetics. Probably does a lot of take-out more than dine in. There was a strong odor of burned cooking oil that was off putting. The lady at the counter was friendly, and took my order quickly. They do not have any hot tea, which would have been nice on a cold day. So I got a coke. I sat down and had to move... as the sun was coming in the window and blinding me where I sat. Other patrons came in and had to move also for that reason. They brought my food out and placed it on the table, which was nice. Portions were decent sized. The breaded chicken in my Sweet and Sour Chicken was mostly breading... very little chicken (see attached photo). Breading was not crispy at all... a bit mushy (I suspect they use pre-breaded chicken that was frozen, which is becoming more common... blech! Hard to make that crispy, unless double fried). The sweet and sour sauce was a little bitter... which I associate with pre-made (sysco? Not made in house) sauce. Very thin, overly sweet and a slight bitterness. Rice was ok... pretty good actually. Some might say I am too picky? But with the meal, a coke, and a tip... this was over $20... and there are other places that do this meal better for about the same price.

Great little place if you'd like to Get your Asian food fix. I'd say they are a step up from Panda Express. You can choose your base ( rice, noodles, etc) and then the protein. He cooks it up fresh. There's a mix of Chinese and Thai menu items. He's quick and attentive when you order. It's a very small restaurant with maybe a few tables.

    Crispy sauce dumplings, YUM!

Yum! This place was a score find on my one night in Eugene! The place is tiny with just a few tables and counter service. Despite being empty when I walked in, the food was delicious! I had the crispy sauce dumplings. They were served in a bowl about half way submerged in a delicious peanuty sauce and topped with some ground pork and green onions. There was some cabbage and zucchini on the bottom as well. The portion size was perfect for a light meal. Location is a bit hidden but worth finding if you want a yummy Asian meal for a reasonable price. Check'em out!

Very cute concept for a Chinese restaurant. You could hear the chef cooking up each dish as we waited. Restaurant very bright and clean . I think their focus is on takeout . Opening till 11.30 in a college town kinda tells you their target audience . We had to try the cream cheese wonton ... nice idea and quite good. Our Mongolian beef and Kung pao chicken bowls were delicious. A side of oyster sauce broccoli rounded in the meal nicely . Many menu items so we will have to come back next time we drive thru Eugene . It's off the main road so don't miss it .

Kung Pao chicken, onion and bell pepper

My meal was okay... I hate to complain about it, but I'm comparing it to the family who owned it before it changed hands when the food was AMAZING! I always order Kung Pao Chicken along with other entrees... every single time. I love Kung Pao chicken and have been ordering it for years. The problem here is that the chicken was breaded and deep fried. Whaaaaatttt? Had I known the chicken would be breaded, I'd have absolutely declined. The onions and bell pepper were chopped into big chunks, which is not the way it's prepared. I ordered it spicy, so for those of you who cannot handle the heat... believe me, you can. There was no celery or red sweet pepper-- just onion, green bell pepper, chopped dried chili and a smattering of peanuts. I ordered a large side of chili oil, which turned out to be chili oil without the chili peppers (bummer). Not a dealbreaker, tho. The side of rice was good... slightly dry, which I prefer. I tried to add Bok Choy to my order, but they don't offer it. If you're not as picky about Kung Pao as I am, you should be happy with the decent amount of food served and the wonderful service they provide.

    Uncle's Crispy Sauce Wontons

I stumbled across this little gem on Grubhub, but ended up just calling it in. Everything ordered was fresh and flavorful. The Uncle Sun's crispy topping was worth trying something new. The crumbles were well cooked meat and the accompanying sauce made the meal perfect! Their corn egg drop soup was thick and had a tasty base. Will be getting that with every order.

Fried Rice with Beef (requested no veggies in fried rice)

I suck at remembering to come back to restaurants and leave reviews. But this place may be my new favorite now I happened to be scrolling on yelp when I saw them. It said only 3 stars, but the photos looked yummy, so I decided to give it a try. After googling them, they have a couple different versions of their menu out there. Which was a tad confusing, but I called for clarification on the items I wanted to order. The location was easy to find. Inside dining area is a little plain, but looks very clean. I ordered to go, so that didn't affect me personally. Get the BBQ pork buns. My favorite was ordering them steamed. But my mom loved them pan fried. I did feel like there was too many pieces of pork fat in them, but it was more like pork belly fat than a decision made to cut corners. I feel like it wouldn't bother most people, but I'm weird with textures. My mom and brother weren't phased by the pieces of fat, so it wasn't OVERWHELMING, just something a picky eater might notice. The flavor of the sauce was AMAZING though. Definitely worth picking out some of the pork belly like pieces to eat it. I ordered the orange chicken with noodles. The chicken looked similar to like, fast food style chicken. But when I tasted it, I was wrong! Inside it was very fresh. And the orange chicken sauce was really good as well. The noodles were yummy, but I would probably order fried rice next time after seeing and trying my brother's rice. My mom ordered the szechuan chicken and fried rice. She said it hit the spot just right. The chicken was good, the veggies were perfect. The sauce had a slight kick to it without being too hot. My brother ordered the dinner fried rice, add beef. The beef was very fresh. He had me try his rice, and I can attest it was amazing. The staff inside were so friendly. They included some free / complimentary items with our meal. One item we mentioned because of the sign they had with placing a big order. But then they also gave extra soup and wrote "gift" on the container. It was very sweet and just left me feeling like a valued customer. We definitely will all be coming back at some point. Whether together or bringing our own friends / different people with us. The only negative thing that I do wish would be fixed... is how their menu is written / advertised. Yes, different websites mentioned mostly the same items, but some had items that others didn't have. (Ex; grubhub mentioned steamed buns, but their website only mentioned the pan fried option) Also with the menu, I wish there was a little bit of an explanation on some items. Maybe a description of what type of flavor Uncle Sun's Secret Sauce is. I know it's a secret (and my mom did love it) but she was hesitant to order something with it without knowing anything about it. Another item that isn't described is the "Cabbage with Sauce," it doesn't mention what type of sauce is used. Overall, the negatives were minor and a quick phone call could answer any questions you have if you really wanted to try something.

    Chili Oil Dumplings
    Ashley O.

I ordered through DoorDash in search of a soup that would carry me through my sickness, and this was just what I needed- plus some. I have driven by Uncle Sun's location and have had it on my "to try" list. I haven't been inside so I can't speak to the ambiance or service completely. However, I will say when I received my order it was nicely packaged with utensils for two and it arrived in the time frame that it said it would. We ended up ordering the tofu and vermicelli soup, as well as chili oil dumplings, bbq pork buns, and orange chicken with broccoli bowl. The prices were more than fair and the flavors were a balance of salty, spicy, and savory. The orange chicken was not too sweet and everything was very fresh. Can't wait to go back! Definitely a great option for a low key takeout experience with restaurant flavors.

Szechuan Bowl with Chicken & White rice
    Scott E.

This was my first visit here. I was hoping to find a good new lunch place. I called in my order and staff were friendly and my food was going to be ready in a quick 10 minutes. My food was ready upon my arrival. My order was accurate and food was hot. I didn't really enjoy the cream cheese wontons. The wrapper was a bit chewy at times and it was fairly plain. Be nice if they put something in the cream cheese like green onions. I did like the Szechuan chicken bowl it was very large and the flavor was okay. I felt like it was missing some heat and wok hei. Usually to key things with Szechuan style I like. The price is excellent $4.99 for the wontons and $9.99 for the Szechuan bowl. I didn't dine in but the inside looked clean and nice.

My white rice with a maggot in it.

I would give this restaurant zero stars if I could. I ordered my order on Uber eats, upon receiving my order, there was a maggot in my white rice. I then called the restaurant to tell them that there was a maggot in my food, they were extremely dismissive and rude and did not give me a refund or anything for my order. Absolutely disappointed.

Taste: We ordered shrimp wontons, dan dan noodles, and a bowl of maocai (a type of spicy boiled dish). The maocai was quite watery, not at all like the rich, thick broth of boiled beef in chili sauce--the ingredients weren't very flavorful. The shrimp wontons were very fresh. It's a place that specializes in wheaten food and noodles. Looking at the menu, I noticed a wide variety of options with complex preparation methods. For example, the dough used for regular dumplings is completely different from the dough used for shrimp dumplings (har gow). Shrimp dumplings require wheat starch (cheng mian), which must be kneaded and shaped with water around 70°C (158°F) to form properly. The entire process is incredibly labor-intensive and truly tests the chef's skill level. Ambiance & Environment: You can tell this restaurant has been open for a long time, yet it remains very clean. There is a glass-enclosed prep area where you can watch the staff making the dough and noodles from scratch, which perfectly showcases their specialty. However, I was seated right next to the back door. Since customers have to use this door to access the restrooms, people were constantly walking in and out. The draft was quite strong, causing my food to cool down very quickly. I highly recommend installing a folding screen there. I also overheard other guests asking to switch seats for the same reason, so this is definitely an area management needs to work on. The Food: Since I was dining alone, I only ordered two dishes, but overall, the food deserved high praise: Griddle Cooked Beef (Gan Guo Beef): A classic Sichuan dish. The beef slices were large, the side ingredients were plentiful, and they definitely didn't skimp on the seasoning. It had a rich, robust aroma of spices that burst in your mouth. Delicious! Beef Dumplings: Easily the best dumplings I have ever had on the entire West Coast. The wrappers were thin, the filling was generous, and they were incredibly juicy--literally bursting with flavor with every bite. Highly recommended! Service: Absolutely non-existent! About five minutes after all my food arrived, while I was right in the middle of eating, a server just dropped the bill on my table. I was completely baffled. It wasn't until I pointed out that I still needed rice that they finally took the bill back. Once I finished my meal, I asked for the check. The server gave absolutely no response. Seeing a long line of people waiting outside, I proactively asked a second time because I didn't want to hold up their business. To my surprise, the staff member snapped at me impatiently, saying, "I heard you, I have to go over there to get your bill." It was genuinely infuriating. Good foods. No services
