A small storefront restaurant, apparently primarily oriented toward the takeaway trade, though there are a few tables, including two outside. They describe their fare as "Indian street food." In addition to a number of more familiar items, they have two categories which were largely new to me: South Indian, and "Indo Chinese"--the latter apparently meaning Chinese food as adapted in India, nothing to do with the one-time Indochina. From the South Indian section, I tried the uttapam, a dish I had never tried or even heard of. The menu likens it to Indian pizza, but I was more reminded of latkes: a fairly thick pancake of rice and lentil flour, mildly spiced, with carrot, red onion, and green pepper, and probably a few other veggies mixed into the batter. Served with an apparently yogurt-based thick white chutney, nothing like the sweet and tangy chutneys usually encountered. There was also a bowl of rather watery dal, moderately spicy, with only a few whole lentils in evidence. Pretty good, and a welcome chance to try something new. I have to update my review. My hubby and I have fallen in love with spicy bite. My hubby loves the chicken biryani (think Indian style fried rice) and the chicken noodles (think Indian chow mein). Both are huge portions and extremely satisfying. Each time we go I try something different on the menu. I really enjoyed the spring rolls, which is how we discovered the noodles. So spicy, so tasty. I tried the goat biryani, which I enjoyed, it had a bit of different flavor then the chicken version and the goat had bones, but again, perfectly flavored. They have this chickpea gravy mix that comes with the bhatura cholle , I almost have to order it in a larger size. It has a very smooth texture, not at all spicy, but wonderful flavor. I also really enjoy their mint sauce, yogurt side, and chutney. I tried the shami kabob, think more of a meatball patty with Indian spices. The chicken kathi roll was an Indian version of a gyro. The uttapam is like a corn pancake but made with egg? It was interesting but I didn't think it had a lot of flavor. I still love the first thing I had, it had the chickpea gravy and samoas. So happy we found this place. The women that work there are so nice and welcoming. Oh! Their pani puri is so light and refreshing. The little shells are crunchy, the little salad inside is refreshing, and the pani they comes with it has the consistency of a light broth with little bread pearl things in it. This is one of my go to places for Indian food. Their samosa chhole is my favorite. They have tons of vegitarian choices, which is awesome.

We've dined in twice and think the food is great - flavorful, fresh, and cheap. Highlights include the bhatura cholle, aloo paratha, and chicken kathi roll. The roti are fresh and buttery - as good as you'll find anywhere. I thought the uttapam was fine, but maybe not quite as good as the other things we tried. Food is cooked to order by friendly ladies. The restaurant is quite small on both sides of the counter. Perhaps for this reason all orders are served on disposable plates and bowls, and the silverware is likewise disposable plastic. We ended up tossing out a hefty amount of paper and plastic on both visits, and hope Spicy Bite will change its ways in this regard. It certainly doesn't have to change the delicious food! read more

My husband and I stoped by here finally, last night. We've been eagerly anticipating the opening so we could get a taste of their idea of Indian Street Food, known as Chaat. When I saw the online menu had our favorite sandwich, Vada Pav, we both were very excited to try it. Then I noticed the Samosa Pav. Now we have to try both. The ladies working there are very nice and service is a little slow, but you see the food being cooked right there. This isn't fast food, per se, but it doesn't take 20-30 minutes either. We did ask how long and were told 15 minutes. So we hoped next door to get some delicious cookies and check out the menu as well. When we returned, our order was being bagged up and we were giving the "high sign" that we should move up to the counter. Now the food, you get two slider size Vada Pav for roughly $5. The Samosa Pav are larger and you get one. Both were very tasty. We didn't see the spicy red sauce they had put into the bag until we had stuffed our piggy faces with street food goodness. So next time, and there will be a next time, we'll know better. There is very limited seating, still, we could have had our order in instead of to go. We had other engagements so we opted to go. I'm very eager to try their other menu items. It looked like there were dinner plate options, with several things per order. I'm not sure, but will certainly find out. I don't have pictures this time, but I'll be sure to take them next. I would certainly suggest Spicy Bite, if you're in the area, like Chaat and are in the mood for a new place in quaint El Sobrante. My husband and I both enjoyed our meal, limited as it was, and are welcoming the chance to expand upon our experience. We've been to numerous Chaat/ East Indian restaurants around the Bay Area. I've been meaning to try this place for a long time. The name "Spicy Bite" gives me the impression that it is like a Hong Kong snack house (except with indian food, obviously). It's a small place with 4-5 tables. The ambiance is pretty plain - not much on the walls. There's a garbage receptacle and a high-chair in addition to the chairs and tables. They have laminated menus with all that's available and each includes a photo (a plus!). Everything is under $10 (with most under $7). We ordered two things, and to our surprise, the portions were bigger than we imagined given the price. We got the chicken wrap and samosa cholle - both were so yummy! In my opinion, the servings are more reflective of a "Spicy Meal" than a "Spicy Bite". Other than the lackluster atmosphere, I was also kind of surprised of how long the food took to come out. Omg finally India street style food close to home. I am in heaven. Amazingly amazing food. The owner is so super friendly. I tried the Bombay veggie sandwich...it is delicious. There's limited seating inside but I did see some outdoor tables and chairs. I bet if more people find out about this place. It will surely give tough competition to the nearby Indian places. The quality of food felt sub-standard. Considering there are so many good Indian food options in the area, I do not see how this business will survive with the current quality they are serving. They need to work a little in order to up their game. The food lacked flavor! Also, it did not feel that fresh or healthy. It is important to put some effort and heart in the food you serve your customers. In this case, the food was just slapped together. The service was also below average. Indian places to me tend to be the same but not this one. I was impressed with the goat biryani. There are bones but don't let that deter you as the goat meat is tender and they fall off the bone with not too much effort. I've never had this dish before and I highly recommend it. Not only is this a good value but the portion is generous ! I had this drink that had mango and it was delicious. Today is Spicy Bites grand opening day! I have seen this place for awhile passing by and I couldn't wait for it to open so I could try it. (Indian food lover over here!) So I went in earlier this evening to find a very delicious smelling, clean, little hole in the wall family run restaurant. I ordered the chicken briyani and mango lassi. Both definitely fulfilled my craving. Food was ready in about 10 mins and that's with a couple tables waiting so I was very pleased to get my food so quickly. Pricing is very reasonable also! Super happy this place is open now. I can't wait to try their other items on the menu! So happy to have an Indian restaurant so close to home! read more

This little strip mall in El Sobrante is becoming a bit of a "gourmet" corner of just good hearty genuine ethnic food. Spicy Bite's tag line is Indian Street Food. Food is authentic, fresh, well prepared and very good. I can easily compare Spicy Bite's menu and food to Viks Chaat in Berkeley. It doesn't have the snarky ambience of Berkeley grad students in angst, but maybe that's a good thing. The Paneer Pakora, Samosa, Okra Bhindi, Lahori Fish Fry and Goat Biryani were all cooked to perfection. Goat sometimes is either overcooked or undercooked, but in this case, perfectly stewed. The garlic naan was perfect too. Along with Handal Sahib Fish and Chips, Spicy Bites, and the delicious Xinia's Bakery, you can feast to your hearts desire. This is what makes the bay area so unique is the variety of high quality delicious relatively inexpensive hand crafted foods. read more

I tried the chicken dosa. The "bread" was thicker than other Dosa I've tried and not as crispy as I'd like. The chicken filling more than made up for what I thought were deficiencies. The flavor was amazing. I asked them to kick up the heat for me. Oh it was so worth it. I over every spicy bite. For me, it made two meals. I ate half there. Took the other half home. Damn, was talking about this place all day and super excited to try it today but it didn't work out. Came in and ordered food. Noticed the person who took our order wasnt wearing a mask and seemed to be sniffling. Took the chance and decided to follow through with the order because my wife and I really wanted to try this place out. Went back in to order drinks and noticed the cashier sneezed (still maskless). I believe she only went to put on a mask because she had noticed that I noticed. I decided to let it be as I am still determined to try this place. I watched as they were prepping our food and still no one proceeded to put on a mask. It wasn't worth the risk to me during a pandemic and decided to cancel our order. The manager was maskless too when I asked for a refund and tried to tell me everyone was masked. I still really want to try the food here, but public health is more important right now. Hopefully they will be more strict with their mask regulations in the future. read more
