Thanks to the trusty search feature on yelp, I stumbled across Spicy Green Gourmet. I was very happy to see such an extensive menu, although with so many choices, it was hard for me to choose. I love a good bahn mi, so I decided on that sandwich. And just like the true southerner I am, I chose the potato salad as my side. I work close by, so I called ahead & was told 20 minutes. When I arrived in 10 minutes, my order was waiting on me. However, because it was lunch time, there was a line, sadly one I had to wait it. Thankfully, I only waited about five minutes & was able to pay & be on my way. The restaurant is cheery & employees seemed happy to be there. The place was hopping, so that was a good sign this place serves up tasty goodness. I returned to work & ate my sandwich & potato salad. The potato salad had red potatoes in it, with the skin still on - not what I'm used to, but still ok. It tasted mustard & mayo based, which I love those two together. The bahn mi was quite delicious with a simple slaw, pork, cucumbers, & Asian dressing. The pork was tender & spicy. The baguette was decent. For the portion size, the price of $8.61 was fine with me. With such variety on the menu, I'll definitely be back. Parking wasn't much of an issue, even though there are many businesses/restaurants in this area. read more

I stumbled across this hole in the wall thru Yelp of all places. A highly reviewed sandwich shop with really interesting sounding sandwiches that also offers a free cookie with your meal on Fridays?! I knew had to check them out (on a Friday of course). They had several sandwiches that sounded good but I narrowed it down to two: their fiesta turkey with pepper jack cheese and lime basil mayo and their fried brie with bacon, basil pesto and fig jam. I eventually settled on the fiesta turkey so you can imagine my disappointment when I got home and discovered they gave me the wrong sandwich. It was a rookie mistake not to check before leaving but still. I immediately called them and explained what happened and the woman I spoke to apologized profusely (especially after realizing this was my first time visiting). Since it was Friday and they had just closed (they close at 2pm), and weren't open on the weekends, she told me to come in on Monday and I'd get the right sandwich on the house. That was all well and good but I was hungry now and I had a sandwich, albeit the wrong one, staring me in my face. Not wanting it to go waste, I gave it a try. As luck would have it, after a couple bites I quickly realized it was the fried brie sandwich (the other one I wanted to try) and it was delicious! Very happy accident. The following week I went back and got the fiesta turkey. I enjoyed it, but the fried brie was the clear winner out of the two. The sandwiches are generously sized so you could definitely split it into two meals. All their sandwiches come with a side and I tried their pasta and potato salads. Admittedly I'm not a big pasta or potato salad person so it's hard for me to judge, but if you are I think you'd like them. Based on the way they handled the mix up, the quality of their sandwiches, and Free Cookie Friday, I'd definitely recommend this place. Pro tip: Get any sandwich on their signature focaccia. Located in a shopping complex at the corner of Miami Blvd and TW Alexander is Spicy Green Gourmet. Initially, it's the restaurant name that peaked my interest. This is a typical RTP lunch spot that will be super busy during prime lunch hours. Luckily parking is plentiful in this complex. You walk in and find bright green walls and the line to order is to your left. The menu is just a paper menu and it is a sandwiches, wraps and salads type of fare. I went for the Chicken Philly Sub with a soda of chips and a drink, which comes out close to $12. The sub itself failed to impress as it just had strips of grilled chicken on it and it lacked flavor. Moreover, it was really just a half sub so the size given the price was disappointing. They do have a hot sauce station like Firehouse Subs, so I used that to jazz up my meal. The restaurant was clean, but the staff didn't really speak much when interacting at the register or when bringing the food to your table. In fact when ordering I was the only person in line and waited a few mins for someone to take my order. When I asked to add jalapenos, still no words uttered, just a push of a button and a blank look on the employee's face. Free cookie Fridays? It's true! This place has great sandwiches and beyond. Highly recommend the fried brie sandwich or grilled cheese. There are plenty of options for carnivores and vegetarians, plus it's centrally located in RTP. Sides are kind of meh, so I'd suggest just grabbing some chips. read more

This place is located in the stip mall behind the sheetz on tw alexander and miami blvd. Kind of tucked away with probably 8-10 other restaurants, so pretty good bet you will find something that you can gnaw on back there. This place had good reviews, so, what the heck, gotta do new to keep it fresh. Walking in however was annoying, just because there was a menu at the front railing that I was trying to read as to not hold up the line for regulars.... A freaking pair of suicide flies kept smacking me in the face. Was going to leave, but my wife wanted to check it out. The flies stayed by the door, thank god and didn't follow me to the table with my food. :). I had the pasta salad and spicy Mediterranean sandwich... IDK. Pasta salad was super bland, and mediterranean sandwich just didn't have that much flavor. The menu had a lot of options, though, and was relatively fast, so maybe just something else, if I'm in the area again. Great sandwich shop! My coworker was raving about the fried Brie sandwich so I had to give it a try. It is a very good sandwich, although the fig spread on it gives it a very sweet kick. They have multiple items on their menu that I am looking forward to trying out. I also appreciate their variety of side options: fruit salad, potato salad, pasta salad or sea salt potato chips. I had potato salad for my side and the kids ordered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with fresh fruit. Prices are decent and the portion sizes are decent also. Very 1st visit today, and they got my sandwich order wrong. I ordered the Chicken Philly and instead got the REGULAR PHILLY cheese stake. I was upset at first, but didn't feel like going back and was not disappointing when I got home. very delicious sandwich!! Will try more of their menu next time (lots of healthy options as well) Parking was no problem, Customer service was pleasant, food was ready in about 10 mins. You can tell everything is fresh. There's nothing simple about sandwiches. I think we can all agree that we've had boring, plain sandwiches, and we've also had amazing sandwiches. This place makes an amazing sandwich. There is a nice selection of vegetarian options, which is surprisingly rare at most sandwich shops. I had the veggie wrap, which has a lot of potential to be a boring sandwich. Most places put zero effort into the vegetarian options, but not here. The roasted vegetables in my wrap were excellent. Even the dressing on my side salad was good, and I don't usually like Italian dressing. It's a little hard for us to get here because we don't work near RTP and they're only open for weekday lunch, but if we're in the area at the right time, we'll be back. read more

Located in a dingy yet safe(thanks to Durham police office) strip mall in Durham, this food joint might come across as a place not worth stepping in. I bet you would feel otherwise when you leave. They have reasonable sandwich options and more than a couple of vegetarian options. Their signature focaccia bread is as soft a pillow. We ordered the Grilled tomato mozzarella sandwich and the pimento cheese sandwich with soup. The vegetable soup was bit too salty for our liking. However, both the sandwiches were delightful. Their sandwiches are spicy but if that is not enough for you.. There are hot sauces to spice it up. I recommend the Papaya hot sauce. My only regret is that Spicy Green is only open at lunchtime... and if that's my biggest complaint, then that tells you Spicy Green is pretty great. Casual and neat, Spicy Green is one of those places that gets mobbed by RTP's cubicle-dwelling folk in search of something better than Bojangles. This spot, nestled in its strip mall, surrounded by other little eateries that compete for its business, does not disappoint - they offer fresh (emphasis on fresh), tasty food, served up with a smile. A few items we've sampled so far includes the BLT Supreme (their pimento cheese is made of win), BLT Fried Mozzarella (I like bacon, okay?!), the Mighty Meatloaf sandwich, the Italian sandwich (which has a fried ravioli in it... again... IN THE SANDWICH), and a killer cappicollo and black bean soup just to name a few. I have yet to have anything that's been less than delicious. read more

There seems to be quite a good selection of lunch places in the same shopping center (RTP/Durham off of Miami Blvd). I had tried most of the others, but a few still allude me. At SGG, I went with the Italian on Sourdough. Interesting that they don't offer the traditional hogie roll for the Italian, but the sourdough went well with the ingredients. Also interesting was that they put small fried ravioli in the sandwich making it crunchy. Never seen that one before. Overall the sandwich was good, but not the best Italian I have had. I guess I just prefer a more traditional version. They do offer a good variety of sandwiches to choose from though. I was going to go with 3 stars, but the side I went with (potato salad) was excellent! (worthy of 5 stars) so I rounded up to 4 over-all. Another positive is this place is very clean, nice tables decor etc. Service is order at the counter and my lunch and side were delivered promptly. I will most likely return to Spicy Green Gourmet for a quick RTP area lunch option. read more

This is a pretty typical RTP sandwich shop. There are a lot like it in the area, but this one is probably my favorite. I ordered a turkey sandwich with hot pepper relish. The sandwich was good--there was a lot of meat on it. My only complaint was that the hot pepper relish sort of soaked through the bread making the sandwich soggy (but that's as much my fault as it is theirs). I also really like that their sandwiches come with sides because I've found a lot of places have started charging $7-8 for a sandwich with no side--not here! The pasta salad was really good. Finally, the owner was really nice. She came around to the tables to check on folks and to make sure that I liked my cookie and sandwich because I wasn't a familiar face. Judging from other reviews, this isn't an out-of-place occurrence, which made it even nicer. Plus, they have free cookies on Friday. I opted for a white chocolate cranberry cookie and it was delicious. Not huge, so I didn't feel too guilty. Anyway, the cookie was so good that I'd happily pay for one on another day of the week (or maybe a brownie or a lemon bar?). Been there a couple times and both times were just amazing. Never understood the concept of best sandwich ever or best sandwich place ever since I am not so crazy over sandwich in general. But this place is close to that for me. The sandwiches were flavorful and rich. The seasonings were just right and not overly strong to overpower the other components. The menu has a lot of options and they all look good. I had some black pepper turkey sandwich and a Cajun chicken one. They were easily in the top 5 best sandwiches I have ever had in my life. You get to pick a side to go with the sandwich, so I picked the potato salad, which was good. There are also several hot sauces for you to choose from too. This place rocks! Consistently well, well, well above average. Their ciabatta bread is as fresh as I've tasted. They have interesting combinations for sandwiches - my absolute favorite is the Greek California Chicken Club - Grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, MARINATED ONIONS (Yummm), Black Pepper Bacon...and the best ingredient of all...Feta Cheese Spread! So good, my mouth is watering describing it! We order lunch each Friday, and had not come across such rave reviews from our employees in quite some time. Really want to like this place, and have given it the benefit of the doubt...maybe once too many times. We have lunched here several times since I started working in RTP last Oct, and find that it's def hit or miss. We have also ordered take out (called in) for office functions. After two times of not getting the orders correct, it's time to find a new place. Add to the fact that the last (pulled) chicken sandwich that I had came with the bones left in it, and was made on day old bread at best, I'm done. The ordering line is annoying, too - it would seem to be common sense to put some of the menus further back in the aisle where people queue up, so they can read it while in line and be ready to order when they get to the register. Stopped for lunch with my son -- I had theAhi tuna wrap and he had fried Brie sandwich. First off, my son is s professional chef (graduated from the CIA) and here was his comment: delightful!! Fresh greenery, interesting sauces, straight from the grill and nice composition of bacon and some sweet fruit-based jelly. Only change : roast it harder!! I went to the Spicy Green Gourmet expecting great things, but it did not turn out as I expected. I eat a vegan diet, mostly due to health concerns and a dairy allergy. I ordered from the vegetarian menu, and made small requests regarding no cheese on the sandwich. First, the people working did not seem to know much about what is in their food, because much of it is premade. For example, I asked if there was dairy in their pesto (sometimes I'll get lucky, so I always ask) but they didn't seem to understand the question until I specified the word cheese. I ordered a fried green tomato sandwich off the vegetarian menu. The ingredients specified fried green tomatoes, mixed greens, red pepper coulis, and pimento cheese. Of course, I asked them to leave the pimento cheese off. When my sandwich came out, it had a heaping pile of pimento cheese, so of course I had to send it back right away. It came back seconds later without the cheese, and I was pretty sure they had just scraped it off. I did specify my dairy allergy at this time, but he said it was good to go. This is when I noticed that there was bacon on the sandwich and no red pepper coulis. It's pretty obvious that they mixed up what sandwich I ordered, but at this point I didn't want to bother since I felt like they were either too busy or not interested in paying attention to their customer's dietary needs. Also, I really don't like to complain and almost never send anything back, so doing so twice in a row felt embarrassing and I have a problem that I don't want to seem mean . I picked off the bacon and tried to wipe away any last remnants of pimento cheese. The sandwich was just okay. The fried green tomatoes were fair, and the bread was excellent, so I'll give them that. I ate as much as I could, as I was hungry and also didn't want to be rude. I did end up having a stomachache afterwards, but it could have been worse. Overall, this just wasn't what I was expecting from a place that has "green gourmet" in their name, and that touts a healthy menu and freshly made items. Like I said, I do not ever want to seem like a mean person, but I was so disappointed in the Spicy Green Gourmet. If you are vegan or have dietary restrictions this is probably not the place for you. For a place that is only open for 3 hours a day for 5 days, they should focus on getting their food out a lot fast, had to wait almost 15 minutes for a reuben and a 4oz cup of what was called Chicken Pot Pie soup. A person who placed a similar order got their food first, they had to ask what I ordered, and then brought out the wrong soup the first time. As for the food, it was definitely sub par, the soup tasted like it came from a can, and was runny for something that should have been in a pot pie, not as rich and creamy as one would expect. Though that could have been the fact they heat all of their soup up in a MICROWAVE in cardboard cups. For a place with gourmet in the name, a microwave should not exist in their kitchen, ever, more so in a kitchen where someone touts the fact they are a classically trained chef and a culinary instructor. As for the sandwich, the Rowdy Reuben, got more sauerkraut then meat and the thousand island dressing overwhelmed the taste of both. Needless to say, I don't think i will be venturing back there, a good alternative for those of you looking for great food, locally grown, try Worth It Cafe a few doors down, not once have I ever had an issue there. read more

Best French Dip I have ever had! And that's not hyperbole. Cute place, great food, where the chef/owner thanked us personally for supporting & asked how it could have been better. I repeat, a classically trained chef asked us how she could have done better! My only suggestion was FREE :-) Paid $8 & change for a $12-15 meal. We will definitely eat there again. While I live just a couple of miles away, I can only. i sit when I'm off from work since there are no weekend hours (sad!) I was able to snag lunch here while my father was in town. He ordered the BLT based on the reviews: two thumbs up. I had the hummus sandwich. It was fresh and tasty - good crunch. The fruit side was above the standard melon offerings, and my dad enjoyed his pasta salad. If you get a chance to eat here, it's good food at a low price. read more
