Chuck was incredibly friendly and helpful, and I watched him employ sage-like patience in interactions with people who don't know much about cars (myself included). They took me in immediately to patch up a tire (darn SF nails!), and everything was smooth sailing. However, I had them installed in 2017 (two of them). I have the receipt. I think they may have a Cupped wear pattern and the measurements were taken on the edges. An old car of mine failed smog. I brought the car in, told Tom that my car failed smog and I wanted to see what was wrong with it. I told him that the other place would do a free retest, so no need to smog the car again. Sure thing, no problem. I return, and Tom tells me what's wrong. All right. He then prints out the bill and charges me for a smog check. Wait a minute, I said - I brought in the car telling you that I knew I already failed smog and that I just needed a diagnostic run. Tom starts arguing with me, telling me that they needed to run their own smog check. I say no, because I can bring it back to the previous shop and they're obligated to retest it for free - like I told you. And to rub in the salt, Spiteri's charged me $250 just to look at my car. There are plenty of places who will offer better service and for a LOT less. In this case, you really don't get what you pay for. After arguing with this guy for ten minutes, I just said, you know what, forget it, I'll pay you the $50 for the smog check, but don't ever expect to see me again. And they haven't. read more

Yes these people took my money. Is there any way my car cannot pass smog today and pass tomorrow ? with no check ups, repairs or services done to it??? I needed a smog check and since I just moved to San Mateo and have been getting lots of coupons in the mail. So I decided to try it since most people are broke these days. I made an appointment for 7:30AM and says it will take 30-45 minutes. I mentioned the coupon and they said "yes that's ok, i'll make a note of it so the morning crew will know". I walk in on time, had some info taken, very nice people (10minutes)... Printed a regular priced $60 smog check invoice, so informed them I had a coupon (10minutes) to reprint. no longer as nice as before but still nice... The car was in after 20 minutes of registration at the desk. Another 5 minutes later until someone starts on my car. (almost 30 minutes went by) 65 minutes later, the guy tells me that my car won't finalize the smog and has tried 3 times. "There may be something dirty" and asked if I could leave it for the day? Of course not, I came in early in the morning for a reason!!! DUH!!!! Oh and they gave me the 50% off so was charged $30 for nothing. The next morning I took it to another place near my SF home and I was in and out of there within 25 minutes. And told them what happen previous day. They said they just wanted to rip you off probably because: 1. "u were a girl" 2. "u were asian in a white neighborhood" 3. had a coupon for 50% off 4. they think that u would actually make another appointment the following day. read more

My son dropped my Mercedes off at 8:30am and picked it up at noon. They told us that it didn't pass the brake & light inspection & offered to fix it for $1,500. First of all, my husband has been a mechanic for 25+ years. He works on all our cars & makes a living from working on cars.. So I assure you when hearing that it had "work to be done for $1,500" -- that made NO sense. BECAUSE, my husband would have known!! What "work" were they talking about? The list went on & on.. The owners son was talking to my son about it. My son works on cars.. He was not going to be taken advantage of the owners son "informing" him on "work that needs to be done, new brakes, new hoses..." NO WAY! They told my son that the total would be for $170.. We complained.. So they $130. Because I wasn't there my son called me about this & my husband. I was so fed up I wrote this review while my son was still there. According to my son... The owners son had the audacity to say.. "Hey dude, is this your mom? We just got her review on yelp. Can you tell her to take it down?" ARE YOU KIDDING ME? My son took the car somewhere else.. FEW HOURS LATER.. We took the Car to another Shop in Burlingame & it PASSED the Same Day (@ 4pm). That owner only charged us $100 & simply stated nothing needed to be fixed & that he didn't know what THIS SHOP was talking about.. All in All I paid $230.. King of the add on sales!!!! Bought 4 new tires and not even after 2 months got a nail in it. Came into repair and they charged $40 + want to charge another $30 to do a tire rotation that they suggested! So my naive boyfriend says yes and I say "this is the last time we are coming here"!!! While we were waiting we heard them tell an old lady her hub cap looked "dangerous"!!! They had already "researched" the price of a new hub cap for her. I go back and forth on Spiteri's, but now I think I'm ready to try and find someone new. They are definitely expensive and you always have to leave your car there for a couple days. The do have a shuttle which is nice but its not always immediately available. Even small jobs here end up costing a lot and yes, they are Kings of the Add On Sale. The last time I went there I had huge car issues and stated up front that I only wanted to get the car driving. Sure enough, at the end of the spiel he said he noticed I still had a cracked windshield and he could get me a quote if I was interested. Sigh. Do you love your vehicle? If you do, you should bring your vehicle to Spiteris. They love every vehicle that comes into their shop. I've been bringing my vehicle here for a number of years for various repairs and the whole crew at Spiteris never disappoints. Everyone here is beyond friendly. Their prices are a little cheaper than a dealership but the service is leaps and bounds better. The only very minor complaint I have is about brakes. I do wish when I have a inspection done on my vehicle they include the brake measurements. I was told on my last visit my brakes were good. When I asked for the measurements the wonderful service advisor (sorry, I don't know her name) offered to see if she could get the measurements for me. I declined since I don't want to be a burden. My only recommendation is to please include brake measurements for inspections. Include what the measurement taken is and what the factory recommendation is for replacement is. For as thorough as Spiteris is, this is actually one thing they could include on inspections. If they can alert me that my icons on my key fob have worn off (yes, they have included that in a report), why can't they give me my brake measurements, more than saying "you're brakes are good." I'll always bring my vehicle back to Spiteris though. Chuck and Sam are super friendly and so are their whole crew! read more

My wife received a coupon from Spiteri's for oil change, and was pretty happy with their professionalism and the courtesy. A few months later, her car was due for an major tune-up, she wanted to give these guys a try. I've read some the reviews on Yelp, was found them to be very wide ranging from a 1 star to 5 star. To be honest, I wasn't sure about these guys, but agreed with the wife to try these guys out. These guys are pretty thorough. After their initial diagnosis, they recommended additional servicing in addition to the standard tune-up. We discussed this these additions with them and they ranked in order of importance and urgency vs. recommended and time frame they should be addressed again. We went with their recommendations, and were pretty satisfied with the results. My car was also due for a major tune-up, and I gave these guys a try too. Again, very thorough, and they did find some issues with my car that needed to be addressed. I appreciate their honesty in stating on recommended servicing, and ranking in urgency. When I picked up my car, I noticed that it was driving significantly smoother and more solid than in recent years. Some will say that when a repair shop is coming up with recommended additional repairs, they're just fishing for more work. They may be true to an extent, but I'm looking for someone who can spot a needed repair, and fix it before it becomes a significant problem. Besides, it's the customers who give the shop the final OK to proceed with new repairs, so the choice is theirs. There are many repair shops in San Mateo County, and I'm sure there are many that are just as good as Spiteri's. Not the cheapest, but neither is this place the most expensive. With so many, it's really hard to know where to go. Spiteri's is on my list of go-to shops (Foreign Affair in Santa Clara and Yarnell's in Mountain View are on my list). read more

They were amazingly warm and welcome and took the time to listen to the issues with my truck, assess check back in and then suggest the care my truck needed. I am so appreciative of Spiteri's and the lengths they go through to take care of my car. I've taken my cars (past and present) here a few times and I am always impressed by how thorough they are. They spell out all the problems, large and small... it's almost like taking your medical problems to a specialist versus a GP. Yes they catch everything -- but in the interest of full disclosure and educating you. I have never felt nickel and dimed. Everything they tell you is spot on. (At least it has been in my case.) This last visit was a doozy... For my little vehicle, that is. I hadn't had problems for a while, but everything caught up with me, and I ended up with just about every known issue listed in Edmunds for my make, model, and year coalescing into one big Check Engine Light Fiesta. Charlie and his tech, Dano, meticulously looked into the issues, figured out the problems, and fixed them. They went into a bunch of research to find the answers, too. (I don't know the mechanical ins and outs of cars, but I know research, and Charlie is thorough and doggedly determined!) When I picked up my car, Charlie spent close to an hour showing me diagrams, going through the diagnosis, and showing me my failed parts. He was careful to do what NEEDED to be done (and ay yi yi, all my stuff was major... sigh) but also tell me what SHOULD be done in the near future. He also took time to research other things I was curious about, and followed up a few days later to ask how my car was doing & tell me the results of what he'd learned. The best compliment I can give is that Charlie and team took care of me in the same way my dad would have, if he could have. I was genuinely surprised by the negative reviews for Spiteri's until I stopped to read those reviews. (Someone is skeptical because they refer to customers by name? Really?? *That* deserves a 1-star rating??) For the people whining about price gouging, I offer this: Spiteri's had their hands on my car twice before I paid them a cent or even gave them my name to put in their system. Here is my personal experience, which I feel is indicative of the type of service you can expect: Interaction #1 (early June 2010): We had the car fully serviced before moving down here from Seattle, but on the road the engine started making a sound like a vacuum cleaner. I took it to nearby Spiteri's and asked them what the problem might be. I spent about 15 minutes with Charlie while he came outside, opened the hood ("It might be something as easy as a hose that came loose, and I can just pop that back on for you."), started and stopped the engine a couple of times, and asked me several questions before suggesting a course of action and giving me a ball-park price for said action (dependent upon whether his instinct proved correct or not). Nothing pushy, no commitment, just helpful service. Not being used to California prices, I said thanks and went looking for a 2nd opinion. We found that 2nd opinion (followed by a 3rd and 4th) at a place not far from the Redwood City DMV. Charlie was right on the money in his assessment of the problem. The 2nd place could also do the repair and for about 3-4% less than Spiteri's, but there was no guarantee with the work. If something went wrong with the repair, we would have to pay them again to fix it. So we kept looking. There were quotes both lower and higher, but the lower prices either came with zero guarantees or longer wait times. Interaction #2 (late June 2010): Once we had our shiny new California license plates to put on the car, getting the rusted bolts off proved ridiculously hard without the proper kind of wrench. We stopped at Spiteri's on a whim just to see if we could borrow a wrench for a moment -- the guys said, "Sure, but we can take care of it for you if you prefer. Won't take a second." And it didn't. We paid them nothing. Nada. Zilch. These two interactions are the reasons we initially chose to take our car to Spiteri's. Their attention to detail and competitive pricing are the reasons we go back. And if I disagree with a prognosis, I get a second opinion and take my business elsewhere. Easy as that. I have never paid Spiteri's for something I didn't want and approve beforehand. When I go to the doctor or the dentist, I like them to check for potential problems I might not have considered rather than just treat my symptoms and call, "Next!" Do your homework. Do the math. I never write reviews about Auto Shops, because I usually I find them to be pushy, dishonest, and would make you believe you need to buy something unnecessarily. Yesterday, I took my car to get a smog and to begin with I was impressed with their pricing. I had called a few other local auto shops and they were charging $60+ for regular smog, not TEST only centers, which I know usually charge that much if not more. So, finally after my 5th or 6th call I tried Spiteri and they had a reasonable price, $40, and were able to fit me in that same day. I got there and Sam was very helpful, he quickly and professionally took the car information, asked me a few questions, and let me know about how long to expect. I should add that the ambiance of the waiting room was pleasant, usually when I go to auto shops their messy, disorganized, and smelly. Theirs was clean and people-friendly!! I sat down and read while they worked on my car but was also making mental notes of how friendly the staff was to the other people who were coming in for various different services. They were so personable and made you feel like they really had your best interest in mind and genuinely cared about you. They were making small talk with their customers and seeing how they could best help and accommodate them. I've never felt so satisfied with an auto shop... I'll definitely be bringing my vehicle to their shop for whatever needs I may have because my short experience there was so pleasant, it was relieving to see and observe how well they treated their clients and how honest and friendly they are. read more

This place is slow, expensive, does unnecessary work, and isn't even open on Saturday's. The first time I went here I brought my car in to have a leaked fixed on my clutch. They fixed the leak, replace the fluid, changed the master cylinder and slave cylinder and charged me $500. I should of just said, fix the leak and no more. The second time I came here, I got my clutch replaced. It took them from a Thursday to a Tuesday to fix it. It should only taken a total of 8 hours to replace. They also said, I had a lot mileage on my radiator and I should change it out for $500. The one I had wasn't broken, and they replace it with a cracked radiator that leaked fluid. Some time later my car started making clanking noises ever time a turned or hit the breaks; it turns out the my new mechanic found that who ever replace my clutch took off my transmissions and didn't replace a washer into the front support beam when the transmission was reattached. The suspension system was digging and grinding into the front metal support beam. It cost me another $500 to restore. The third time I came here my cylinder had blown out. They charged me $250 for diagnostic's. They then said it would be $8500 to replace the engine. I knew then that these people were finally crazy. The tow truck driver told me he knew of another mechanic that could help me out. Went to my new honest independent mechanic; and he replaced my motor for half the price. If you want to find a good mechanic in your area, talk to your local tow truck driver. Even the tow truck driver said, he would never go to this place. If you don't know anything about cars and like to spend lot's of money, these are your people. You would better off going to a rip off dealer instead, because at least they are open on Saturday's. When ever you drive by, give them a honk to let them know how much they ripped you off for. read more

I had a great experience getting a smog check at this facility. I had made an appointment because I noticed a coupon in my local advertisement. The reviews on Yelp were really good as well. When I arrived, I was greeted to a very professional and friendly staff. They took some information and let me know the approximate time-frame it would take. There was one other person ahead of me but I was in and out in 30 minutes. I couldn't ask for more. And it's great that they open their doors at 7am. Not gonna lie ... I found Spireti's because I was driving down from the San Mateo DMV and just randomly looking for a sign that offered smog check. I chose them because the storefront was clean and the work bays looked professional. And I'm glad I did! Although the place looked fairly busy, they took me right away -- squeezed me in, really, because I was hoping to get back to the DMV before lunch. Lou and Sam at the front desk couldn't have been nicer or more professional. The check took no time at all and was less than $40. Turns out when I returned to the DMV with my smog completed there was a VIN discrepancy, so the guys at Spireti's told me to come right back, and then they did the smog check over with the correct VIN. Couldn't have been nicer about the whole thing. Finally, as I was driving home from the DMV with all my paperwork complete I thought "Hey, I wonder if they would put my new license plates on for me." Really impressed with all the guys who are working here. We took both of our kids car`s for oil change and couple more things and we are so happy with all the work that it`s been done. There was no pushing or telling us that work needs to be done immediately. Both car`s where checked, we got the quote and the list of the things that needed to be fixed. It was up to us if we wanted to go on, and have work done there, or take the car somewhere else. They are really fast, and usually fix what ever is needed same day. 24hours later somebody called us and ask if there is any problem with the car, and if there is, if we can bring the car back and they will look at it and fix it free of charge. Car is given a thorough inspection every time I bring it in, and I receive a detailed explanation of the work needed, why it's needed, and costs involved. Every mechanic is ASE Certified, and work is done right the first time, every time. There's even a courtesy shuttle if you need a ride to or from the shop. A big plus is that they subscribe to your vehicle manufacturer's Service Information System, so they have access to the same database that dealers use for factory scheduled maintenance, manuals, diagrams, service bulletins, etc. If you want to keep your car in like-new condition, this is your shop. read more

These guys are the best mechanics I've ever had the pleasure to hire, anywhere in the country. I'm super lucky to live within walking distance of them, so I can drop my car off and walk home. They quote you up front, give incredibly detailed breakdowns of what they're doing with your car, answer any and all questions you may have patiently and expertly, and will call you if anything unforeseen arises that might warrant going over their initial quote. After a service, they give you a good list of things to keep an eye on, and recommendations for care to keep your car going strong. These guys are the absolute best, I won't go anywhere else. My only complaint is that they are only open until 5pm, which means I usually have to pick up my car the following morning. read more

Friendly staff and I liked how they explained everything to you. I got Expert advise. I had the rear brakes repaired and got 150,000 mile service on my Lexus IS 250. Arrived around 7:15 am and they finished my car at 3:30. The cost was reasonable and affordable. They gave me a ride home and they picked me up too. Im very happy with the work they did. I have been a customer for many years and two cars. Have never been disappointed with the service. I am no mechanic but the car always runs beautifully afterwards. Agree with many others that the Service Reps. are so pleasant and do remember you. Explanations are thorough. My last fiasco was done by mis-judging the distance needed for a turn and ran my wheel into a curb. Been an exhausting few weeks, much on my plate so by the time I got to Spiteri's I was on the verge of tears. Tom was so kind, took down my details and then Charlie, so had overheard my story, checked out the tire. Kept thinking I had so much left to do that day and how would I cope without a car. Charlie, whom I dealt with previously and very knowledgable about Honda's, calmly suggested I rent a car since they wouldn't be able to have a new tire by close of day. Was so appreciative of the suggestion. They offered to transfer all of my many items in my car to the rental. Though it did take another day than originally expected due to not receiving the tire, Tom and Charlie were very helpful. Find their politeness and friendliness another plus. Also, like their courtesy car to pick-up or drop off. Expressed a comment to Charlie when I picked up my car that the days of receiving a rental car that was washed and full gas tank were gone. He immediately called the rental car co, req. that I be given a price break due to the car's condition. They agreed to do so. Chose Spiteri's based on their awesome reviews and I was not disappointed. Every single employee I talked to was not only nice and pleasant to interact with but each of them went out of their way to help me. I needed to get all four tires replaced on my Audi, Tom called around and was able to get the tires shipped so I could have them replaced the next day. He asked me about the type of driving I do so he could match me with the best tires. He also found ones that were comparable to the existing tires but were significantly less expensive. The thing that really stood out for me though was the lengths they went to to help me with transportation. I stay at home each day with my two young children, having someone available to watch them while I pick up and drop off my car isn't always an option and trying to move car seats into and out of a taxi or service car doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun either. Tom arranged for my car to be picked up from my house and then dropped off back at my house once the tires were finished. I was so impressed with their level of customer service that I recommend them to anyone and everyone. I recently took my car back in to have the breaks serviced and Charlie informed me that there was a rebate available on the tires I previously purchased. He even filled out the rebate forms for me so all I had to do was sign them and drop them in the mail. Bam instant money back. Love these guys. My car failed a smog test twice, i took it in to them and i felt like they put me at ease with telling me step by step on what they will do. I just got my Honda serviced here (70k service) along with a smog check. Dropped it off at 7:30AM and was done by 3PM. They called me midday to ask about a few issues they found while operating on it, and was glad they were thorough with explaining the situation and my options. What I really like about this place is: 1) they were patient, didn't give me any kind of pressure in person or on the phone or didn't try to sell me shit I didn't need. 2) they were very good at explaining high to low level details (I'm no car guru so they dummed a few things down for me) 3) They were HUMAN BEIGNS, meaning they didn't sound bored or gave off a vibe other auto dealers would as if it were routine to them. These guys really showed they cared I'm giving 4 stars because they were a bit pricey. Took advantage of their discounts, promos and coupons via yelp and their own site, but it still came out pretty expensive- One of the things I had to negotiate with them about was a ridiculously high labor cost on checking an odd noise that my car was making when driving out. I have to say, Spiteri's is great with their communication and transparency. I first brought my vehicle in for a brake and lamp inspection (one of the steps necessary to change my title to salvaged), and was initially put off by the long list of changes that they said were necessary for me to pass. After taking note of my first impression of the list, I was contacted by three people at the shop; Sean, who works at the front, Chris, who I believe is the shop manager, and finally Sam, the owner. Each of them openly provided explanations for each of the changes that I needed to make in order to pass. When taking your car here you're definitely going to get the kind of customer service that puts you at ease. I think I have been here more than enough to definitely give a great review!! :0 ) No one ever wants to know an automotive place because the meanings are definitely not good for your car. I own a 2002 Ford Taurus and my poor car definitely had some problems. The previous owner from few years ago definitely did not give the car the attention it needed. With that being said, I had to bring in my car to replace two catalyc (not sure on spelling hehe) converters and some wiring. Now, the one thing that I hate was the price, which is not the fault of Spiteri's at all. Price is something that you cant haggle or get around if you want the service done right the first time. While my car was in the shop they kept in contact with me daily and let me know the progress. They called me once to ask if they could keep it another day just to make sure my car was running fine. Thousands of dollars later my car is running fantastically! I will be bringing my car in for an oil change in a few months. And the convenience if it being very close to my home is a plus as well! read more
