This place checks all the boxes and then some! * Great food * Plenty of outdoor seating * Vegan options * Draft beer and wine * Super cool patio atmosphere * Bike friendly * Pet friendly * Locally owned, operated, and sourced I was biking from Encino to Dodger stadium and needed a place to relax and grab a bite for lunch. This was the perfect spot...even if you don't bike. Order at the window and then find an open table. The line to order can be long so here's my pro tip: order ahead online at www.spokebicyclecafe.com . They have a solid breakfast and lunch menu with plenty of drink options. I ordered the Chicken Bacon Sandwich with waffle fries instead of the salad. This was a super tasty breast of marinated chicken and smoked bacon with provolone, pickled onions, and garlic aoli sandwiched between freshly baked rustic sourdough bread. The chunky waffle fries were delicious too. I was stuffed. The locally sourced kombucha on draft was perfect for me...sweet, slightly bubbly, and healthy. ;) If you're riding here, there are racks and plenty of space to park your bike. There's even a bike shop to rent or service your bike that is literally next door. This place makes me want to bike more so I can eat more. Definitely biking back one of these days! read more

The bicycle track along the almost non-existing L.A. river provides a safe opportunity to spin the legs a little bit on a weekend. Best of all, is that there are two wonderful restaurants along the track that are even without the exercise worth to visit. One is the Waxpaper (see elsewhere) and the other the Spkoke Bicycle Café. While there would also be hardware and other bicycle needs available, most folks just come for a break and the food. The choices are not endless, but nonetheless very hearty and good. read more

I can't understand all the good reviews after the experience I had here today. Maybe I just came here on a bad day, but it shouldn't take 2 hours to wait in line, order food and get that food, especially when it's chips and salsa, peanut butter toast and a burger and fries. A truly absurd dining experience I will not choose to experience again. This was our second time coming here, and my friend joked it would take us an hour to get our food like it had the first time. the chicken sandwich on gluten free bread was great!! for fellow gluten free folks, they know how to properly toast the bread (none of the soggy half-defrosted udi's that makes me cry lol). the decor outside is really fun too. just be prepared on the weekend to wait: i waited an hour for my food. it was delicious, so i'd go back, just maybe earlier in the day (or when i'm less urgently hungry). read more

Spoke is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. The main attraction is their waffle fries which are PERFECT. The right amount of salt, satisfyingly crunchy, and never greasy. The breakfast burrito is up there with my favorites across the city. Eggs, crispy potatoes, homemade salsa, and a fantastic garlicky sauce that I'm amazed I have the discipline to not eat in 3 giant bites. The chipotle sauce they serve on the side is the perfect smoky sidekick to take you to burrito heaven. The avocado toast starts with Bub and Grandmas amazing bread, which honestly on its own as toast is incredible! On top of the bread is a delicious avocado mash topped with roasted corn, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes and bright citrusy arugula. 10/10 would and will eat again! Aside from the tasty food, the space is awesome with plenty of outdoor seating, but even better is that they open up to the LA river bike path where you can take a stroll or just hang out and watch the cyclists cruise on by. read more

Last weekend, while my family and I were walking along the bike path and taking in the view of the nonexistent river next to us, we suddenly became desperate for a restroom. As we continued walking down the path, we saw Spoke Bicycle Café beckoning us onto it. After taking care of business, we decided that the menu looked enticing enough and we stayed for breakfast. Boy, was that the right call! What a hidden gem this place is. It's packed with bicyclists and a mish mosh of families and friends grabbing a beer and a quick bite to eat. We settled on the avocado toast, the breakfast tostada, and the grilled cheese. We also ordered a side of the potatoes and waffle fries. My sister tried their vanilla latte and I got a freshly squeezed orange juice! All of the food looked and tasted amazing! The vibes are very relaxed and seeing all these cyclists almost made me want to rent a bike and ride in the wind. They do have bike rentals by the hour as well if you're into bikes! That would be a cute date idea too. I would definitely come back again for breakfast. It was a bit chilly since it's outdoor seating only so bring an extra jacket if you're a weakling like me. I'm not entirely sure how to get here directly since we walked here but there must be street parking somewhere. If you see a long line when you get here, just stick it out. Perfect spot to stop by on the LA river at the start or end of a bike ride. The drinks & food are consistently good and the staff are always friendly. Absolutely awesome. Perfect place along the Los Angeles River to grab something to drink or a full meal. And who knew they rent bikes too. I made a 24 Mile round trip on the LA River with a Metro rental bike from downtown Los Angeles. This is the perfect spot to start a LA River bike ride with one of the spoke bike rentals. The watermelon lemonade was out of this world. read more

i love this cafe a lot - but do yourself a favor and never order the tofu scramble. it was more like a watery salty porridge on a plate, and the sautéed kale was so salty and sour it was actually inedible. Delicious! Parking is difficult but then you're really supposed to roll up on a bike. Loved the open air seating with views of the river. Everyone's in a good mood. I had watermelon lemonade and vegan scramble on a bun. Mostly so good, the tofu scramble was too gravy like but the sandwich and home fries were still so so good. Super cute, unique cafe along the LA river trail. This place warrants a visit for the vibe / experience alone. How many places in LA can you comfortably bike to, sit with relaxing views of the San Gabriel mountains, read / journal for 2 hours, then get back on your bike...and never see a car? We admittedly did not try any of their food. Looks decent. We did get some of their coffee. Was decent. I'd come back just for the vibe / experience. Really loved it! read more

We had a fun time renting bikes from Spoke Bicycle Cafe and cycling along the Los Angeles River bike path. They have a large selection of bikes available for rent - including fat tire beach cruisers, hybrids, and road bikes. The cafe is located right on the bike path - we were told that taking the trail to the left would be more scenic, while towards the right would be more urban decay. We took out 2 hybrid bikes with helmets and cycled to the left. The trail was very scenic and while we did see signs of urban decay (there are lots of homeless people camping out along the path) it still felt relatively safe and we got to see a new side of Los Angeles. Along the way, there were many signs indicating that the path was closed and that there would be a locked gate up ahead, we passed through several open gates until we finally hit a closed gate about 8 miles from the cafe and couldn't proceed any further. We turned around and arrived back at the cafe, exactly one hour after we left. The path is paved and separated from traffic, and since we were there on a weekend, there were plenty of other cyclists, but it was never crowded. read more

Such a cute place nestled by the LA river! All the employees work so hard here and it gets quite busy here! The drinks, food, atmosphere is a vibe here!! I really love their burgers and sandwiches! They have tons of options for my vegan friends as well. The cool thing about this place is not only is it a great cafe, it's also a bike shop! The bike shop is located towards the back of the cafe where you can rent bikes and hit the LA river trail, or if you need some work done (tubes, flat tire). This place is definitely a gem!! read more

One word, AWESOME! This is the best little creative / cultural spot I have found in Los Angeles. They offer a gourmet menu at sandwich shop prices, a variety of unique coffee drinks, craft beers, and rare unfiltered wines. They cater to athletes, artists, plant enthusiasts and everyone in between. To top it off they are pet friendly! To order you go up to the window inside the courtyard/ dining area which is glistening with potted herbs and succulents. (I always see butterflies and at least one hummingbird every time I'm there. ) The staff is super friendly and courteous. Although, they do get busy so keep this is mind. Nonetheless, my order has always come out relatively quick and is always hot! There is outdoor seating with umbrellas and heaters and street parking is plentiful. If you're riding your bike you can cruise in directly from the bike path. The on-site bike shop is a MUST if you're looking to get some new gear or need a repair. This place is a dream and I am so happy to have found it! A true shining star in the city. They have it all! I recently discovered that there is entertainment on the weekends too! read more

Spoke feels a little bit like a piece of San Francisco or Seattle brought to LA. It's funky in a nostalgiac way that you just don't see anymore in so many major cities. The owners are Dead Heads so that tells you the place always has top notch vibes. And truly some of the best espresso in town, if not the best. Locally roasted by a single guy that does weekly deliveries. If you're a vegan/vegetarian, this place is heaven. I've actually never had a bad meal here. Even the salsa they make in house is like "whoah, whats in here?" Everything is so flavorful. I'm not sure how they prep that tempeh, but you will actually dream about it. Taking in a sunset with a cold beer on the river here is next level. I always recommend this place to friends visiting, because you just won't find a place like this anywhere else in LA. They are always hosting super fun community events like trivia, charity bike rides, etc. and with a huge open patio, I've never had a problem finding a space to bring friends. read more

I have eaten at Spoke numerous times and find the food to mostly be delicious, especially the way they make their potatoes and fries. However, recently my wife, toddler, and I had a bad experience with one of their staff. We were at one of their outside tables when a large white man in a hat came out and started to berate me for sitting there, saying that the table was not supposed to be outside. I said that the table and chairs were outside when we arrived, and that we wanted to be outside because it was too loud and noisy inside. Continuing in a hostile manner, he said they had to be moved inside. I said I have a family here, can you help me? He then got another staff person to help move the table and chairs inside. It was at this point that he gruffly explained that specific table and its chairs couldn't be outside or they would be cited (they have other chairs and tables outside). Ok, I get it if there's some kind of city code issue. But don't come out and engage with a customer (and the only family of color there) in a hostile way. How about you don't assume I did something bad, be polite, and explain the situation? It's too bad that this has to happen in a gentrifying neighborhood, it definitely makes you look really bad. read more

I'm older, but that doesn't mean I don't like to go fast. When renting a bike I was strongly encouraged to take one of their yellow green slow, turtle bikes. They have bigger bikes with more gears and more speed. I recommend the faster bikes. My wife and I rented bikes from Spoke bicycle cafe and had a very lovely bike ride. When we returned post ride, we tried to get coffee from their restaurant. After waiting in the line for 30 minutes we gave up and went to "Just what I Kneaded" bakery down the street. Kneady bakery was great, morning bun highly recommended. Spoke cafe you've created a cute place. If you could work out the turtle speed coffee situation I would give you more stars. read more

Very nice little restaurant/cafe on the LA river bike path. Pretty decor, atmosphere and setup. The staff was friendly and service was quick. Had the chicken bacon sandwich with fries. The fries were perfectly crispy and well seasoned. The chicken sandwich was a bit lacking though. The chicken breast patty was a little on the dry side and the sauce was way too salty. Although I like nice crusty bread for hearty sandwiches, this toast was way too tough and not the good kinda chewy. At $20, it was disappointing. You are given enough ketchup to dunk at least 3 whole fries lol . But it was not a total deal breaker. Their menu is extensive so I'll be back to have a beer or wine and maybe an appetizer or something. read more

We tried this restaurant with a small group of four people. It was a busy Sunday, early afternoon. I called in advance and the woman that answered was super nice. We split a chicken sandwich with waffle fries and it was good. We really came for a special, hazy IPA from North Park Brewery. The beer came in a very small plastic cup, smaller than the other beers ordered. When we came back after a walk we were told we could drink out of real glasses. It made a huge difference and the long line was gone for a more quiet, relaxed atmosphere for their food pop-up that started around 5 pm. read more

Really cute cafe next to the river and bicycle path with a chill ambiance! It's a Bicycle Shop too, so if you're riding a bike, awesome stop to fix your bike, get a bike etc. As far as drinks & food, I tried their cold matcha latte and it was perfect! I had no idea this place existed, but now I'm thinking about riding my bike along the LA River just to stop here as often as possible. I don't know where to start in describing this awesome bike shop, cafe, and bar. I specifically came for the craft beer as they had some rare craft offerings on draft (and in cans). I ended up getting a couple hazy drafts and some cans to go. This place was packed with cyclists and people enjoying Sunday brunch. The food looked really good. Next time I'm back, I will be ordering some food to go along with the brewskis. I'll take a two-wheeled mode of transportation rather than driving. Parking a car in this neighborhood is a little tough. read more

Not only can you get bikes and maintenance here, you can get breakfast burritos!!! This spot as at the very end of the street right by the bike path. There's rarely any parking around it so recommend just riding here. The girl that took my order was super sweet and accommodating. This is my go to spot to grab a quick bite in the morning after a ride or just a nice walk. I place my order, go for a ride, and it's ready for me when I'm done. The burrito is perfect and it's vegetarian. It's got potatoes and fluffy eggs and they give you some delicious salsa with it. Hits the spot every time! read more

I passed by this place many times and always looked at people walking out of here all happy and stuff. So decided to grab breakfast here on our walk by the LA river! There's open seating outside, semi private or maybe semi communal. The orders get ready fairly quickly, and the staff are really nice (can't say the same about the bicycle repair shop in there). The food was amazing!! The burritos we ordered weren't soggy nor were they super dry. I thought there was a good balance in the portions of the ingredients in this BB! The spicy sauce brought tons of extra flavor to the burrito as well. While a little pricey, I think the food is well worth the price. Will definitely go back! read more

Love coming here for beer and food after strolling the LA river. It's a bike shop and cafe with pretty much anything you want ! Although I'm writing this review because it needs a little love. Cobwebs everywhere and strange art. The beers don't have prices and a pitcher came out to $38. Foam on the top, it filled 3 plastic cups and gave everyone a topper. I hate when a place charges more for a pitcher vs. individual beers. Then happy hour has it for $26, I'm extremely confused. Clean up the place a bit and organize the pricing so I can come back not feeling like I'm getting used. read more

Coming here really made me lament not being a bike rider. It's a bit out of the way for most people, but I love the tucked-away nature of it, as it lends an intimate feel to the entire joint. There is no interior, except for ordering your food, so you may end up getting a either wet or sunburned, depending on the weather. Part of it is covered, though, and there are umbrellas for most other tables, so it's definitely doable. The ambiance is super chill and you even get a lovely view from the patio of the LA River. You could even go out the back door and take a stroll/ bike ride after your meal/ drink. Oh, and yes, this is also a bike repair shop. Seeing as this is a coffee shop, it would have been remiss of me not to try one of their drinks. Ignoring the more adventurous drinks like the Charcoal Cappuccino and Sparkling Espresso Tonic, I went with a simple Vanilla Latte and used my Yelp check-in discount to get a buck knocked off that thing. It was perfect. Just a tad sweet, deliciously-robust, and ever-so-warm. The food here is crazy-good; perfect coffee shop fare ranging from loaded toasts, hearty burgers, and satisfying pastries. I got a bit of both the sweet & savory worlds, starting with their popular Honey Banana Toast, which I wish hadn't been topped with so much peanut butter. I got full halfway through, but it was absolutely amazing, if a bit too sweet. The Breakfast Bun is a small breakfast sandwich made with scrambled eggs, cheese, onions, chives, your choice of tempeh bacon or real bacon, and a special sauce of their own. Stopped by here at the suggestion of my friend Tina who knows how much I love design and home decor. It's a very casual place - perfect for all ages and dog friendly. Vegan and gluten free options also available. From a decor and design perspective it's very eco-friendly and features designs by local artists. The furniture takes me back to early Pinterest days of upcycled pallet furniture designs that are found in the seating. VERY cool designs of bike racks on one side and booth to sit in the other. Moveable planters with wood and corrugated metal siding on casters with succulents - fit right in! The huge cinder block wall where art deco meets graffiti in primary colors blends it all together really well. The wall of recycled spokes - genius design! This is a fantastic outdoor place to meet up with friends and family. We're here today on a Saturday in perfect 85 degree weather. There is a covered area that I'll just bet looks like fun in the evening when the edison string lights shine! We had the Spoke Burger with Avocado that was DELISH. Came with Waffle Fries - yum! Only downside was the Lemonade. A little too sour for us so we ended up with just water. One of my new favorite places. I'm a cyclist so this place is like heaven. I went here after a hike near the Hollywood sign and was a bit surprised at how good the food was. The breakfast bun is very similar to Eggslut's sandwich but this one is cheaper and the crowd is not annoying here like at Eggslut. What a great atmosphere, great spot for after a long tough bike ride through the city, great family get together, or just breakfast with friends, the line gets long and sometimes you have to wait a while for the order to be ready however well worth the wait, menu is great! Cool spot, rented a bike and a child carrier hitched to the back to trek and pedal on the bike path along LA River. Very relaxing, water is rushing and gushing creating a zen feeling along with birds and Mother Nature it felt like a real escape from Day to day routines. Will be back very soon. Spoke Bicycle Cafe started as a proof of concept in early 2015 as the first combination bike shop/cafe in Los Angeles Spoke Bicycle Cafe is the first business of its kind to set up a permanent location along the LA River Bike Path to provide a comfortable, welcoming space for cyclists, pedestrians, neighborhood residents, and others. We share a 150 foot border with the LA River bike path and our one-of-a-kind, mostly outdoor spot is perfect for large groups. We provide top quality food and drinks, expert bike repairs, a large bicycle rental fleet, and a carefully curated array of accessories. Super crowded on weekends between 9-1pm. You will be inline for awhile to order. I learned to order online then take it to the table to dine right on spot.

We serve brunch until 3 and then our dinner menu. Kitchen closes at 9:30 Friday and Saturday, 8:30 Sunday.

The lamb curry had a nice curry flavor, but it was missing the depth and complexity I've had in really good curries. There also wasn't much actual lamb in the dish, which made it even harder for it to stand out. Overall, nothing we had was particularly bad, but aside from the broccoli, nothing made me think, "I need to eat this again." We eventually found parking right around the corner and close enough to crawl to the place. The location of the restaurant is rustic, old-town, and brown, and might be a bit challenging for most outsiders. It's located between a dive bar on the left and an art store on the right. As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by the owner, Guillermo - an approachable, caring, knowledgeable, and respectful gentleman with the enthusiasm of ten people. The interior of this place is a bit rustic, but we were there for the FOOD, not to shop for furniture. The place was sparsely populated, with only a few patrons. The oldies were jamming, and we were focused on the food experience to be had. We had been studying the menu online for about a week and were still undecided about what our choices would be, so we went with the suggestions Guillermo made for us. I had to start with one of their beers on tap, and this is where the magic happened: The Kinky Blonde, the Allagash White, and the Cali Squeeze were perfect for a lazy afternoon and an empty stomach, pairing well with the conversation and our much-awaited meal! I was so excited to come here- it was reviewed well, the space is really cool/unique, and the photos of the food looked great. Me and my husband live in Santa Monica so we made it a point to visit here so it really just ruined our whole day with how bad this place ended up being and there are hundreds of other options between us and this place so I feel like we got gypped. When we were ordering, another guest interrupted and was complaining to the cashier about how he and his family have been waiting for their food for over an hour. I stupidly dismissed that comment because I used to work in a restaurant for many years and I always got guests who said things took an hour and it really has only been 15 minutes but little did I know- me and my husband were going to be that same guy in an hour and twenty minutes. We sat, waited, and started noticing the speed in which people were getting their food. Around 40 minutes (which is an insane amount of time to receive food- busy restaurants typically don't go over 20 minutes to serve their guest) people who were just ahead of us in line started getting their food which typically means we'll be up soon. An hour goes by- our line peers are done eating and people who were definitely after us were getting their food. A whole party of two tables got their food before us and they were waiting about 30 minutes less than us. I ask an employee to check on our order because it's been an hour (we checked the receipt for the time) and she checks with the kitchen. She comes to our table and asks what we ordered which is troubling because it seems like our order was lost, we tell her, and she comes back out, says it will be a few minutes and offers us a pastry or drink on the house which we passed on because what we want is our food in a normal, restaurant-standard time frame. At an hour and twenty minutes she comes out with one of our sandwiches. My follows a few minutes after, it's missing avocado which we paid extra for and at this point I've given up on this place. After we left, I read through some of the reviews on Yelp! and "over an hour for food" is said enough times that you would think they would have figured it out by now. I saw a reply from a manager or owner saying to another guest who had a similar complaint and they said "consider coming earlier or later in the day or on a weekday for less crowds. Weekdays are very chill here." Really? So you're allowed to have poor standards because it's busier those days? You're basically saying "we're allowed to suck on the weekends because it's busy". I feel like people are in awe of the space and location so much so that the food and service are forgiven. read more

It took 25 minutes to order and then 70 MINUTES after ordering to get our food yesterday. And there's no system in place to know when your food is ready aside from standing at the window (sitting at your table, you can't hear them call your name). So there's a crowd waiting there for their food, and while we're waiting some rando lady has a full on public tantrum at a few of us bc we were five feet away from her instead of six. Im not sure why this place has 4.5 stars. The food is over priced and the food doesn't taste anything special. Sandwiches and burgers is $14.50, grilled cheese is $12. The line is crazy long because there is only one cashier. Once we finally got to the cashier, she was dismissive and rude. This is the only place where I questioned why I even tipped her. I have not been to Dune before, but the value of the lunch special along with the promise of a fried chicken shawarma, coupled with unexpected free time, sounded like a promising moment to stop by. Walked up to the window and after no acknowledgement, I peaked inside the door and asked whether I place an order at the counter or wait to be seated. When I tell you the jarring elder Gen Z stare and incredibly unfriendly direction to sit on the bench and wait my turn (in the literal sense that I was told to sit on the bench and wait my turn. There was only a party of 2 seated at the bench and no line to speak of) made me regret coming out to eat entirely. I'm not lying when I say I thought about leaving immediately and driving home in my air conditioned car instead of sitting on a hot bench in nearly 100 degree weather with no acknowledgement of party size, no offer for a drink or water while I wait, and just existing in my bizarre humiliation ritual for having asked what the procedure is here for any kind of recognition of my interest in dining or simply existing. And yes, after sitting down I saw there is a small low contrast sign on a post stating to sit on the bench and wait, but it is positioned parallel to the counter window and only when turning away from the glass toward the seating area was it placed in a way that I would see it. Not very useful for someone who is walking up or down the sidewalk as it's not visible. I held my breath for about 10 minutes before being asked my party size (one) and seated at a shaded table. I regretted my choice to dine out the entire wait time for the table, while ordering and then being required to pay upfront before my meal was even presented to me, while seated awaiting my order, while my food (loaded fries, fried chicken shawarma, date shake and an added unsweetened iced green mint tea) was dumped at once on the table in front of me, while eating feeling humiliated for existing inside human skin, and again when having to walk to the window and ask for a to-go box. I felt like a massive inconvenience for the staff and fully regretted bothering them every step of the way for normal things like a Dine LA menu which was not initially offered, adding an iced tea to my order, existing in a metal folding chair and generally taking up space. I don't like being treated like a turd by people, and certainly don't want to be treated this way when I'm paying for a service. But after the initial flubbed interactions, demanding payment with tip upfront before receiving any kind of service was rendered, and then dumping my food at the table without ceremony, it's truly no wonder why the LA restaurant scene is dying. Between poorly trained staff, rising costs in rent and utilities, the outrageous cost of staffing and the fact that eating at a restaurant is completely unnecessary when cutting household expenses, restaurants are disappearing left and right. Some of the foods I still dream about are lost forever to closure after closure. Customers being treated like they're inconsequential isn't the only reason people like me usually choose to dine at home, and it's not the only reason restaurants are disappearing. But it's one of the only controllable elements in a world of runaway hospitality expenses. Customers deserve even a modicum of respect if restaurants are going to survive. $48 for the meal including tax and tip. More than enough food for lunch, I took home half. Loaded steak fries / wish they were served with a whipped feta or dipping sauce instead of ketchup but they're good. Generous portion of steak. 9/10 Fried chicken shawarma / fun idea, execution made it difficult to pick up to eat. Serving in a metal basket made it impossible to cut in half since there was not a solid surface to cut against. I've had cold brews and lattes mostly but they are a good balance of flavors, and I love the simplicity of the menu. Customer service is awesome. Despite only being here every two weeks, they manage to remember my name. Impressive! There is a good amount of counter seating along the windows and 3 tables (one 4 seater, 2 - 2 seaters). I've been here to do some work and studying before on random afternoons. The one challenge is at peak times, parking is tougher. They do have a lot but it can fill quickly. There's plenty of street parking around the area so just plan accordingly. This is LA after all :). Don't let it stop you from grabbing coffee
