This review is coming late so things have changed and I am only speaking for the beverages here. My sister and I decided to pop in while walking down the LA river and having seen it a couple of times. I ordered the peanut butter latte and she ordered the chai. The chai was very pale (think horchata), on the sweeter side, and had very littler spice (even though we'd been told it was bold in spice side). The peanut butter latter was bad. No peanut butter flavor and the espresso was very astringent. I tried adding sugar to make it a little less bitter, but it didn't help. Eventually I returned the drink and let them know I didn't like the drink which they then told me that the drink was still in development and gave me a new drink for free which I appreciated. I got vanilla latte. Very safe, again on the sweeter side, with a mellow espresso flavor. They have a very vegan/vegetarian friendly menu which I appreciated and do still want to try. The ambiance seemed nice and I love the concept of a bike shop/cafe. Just might not be trying the drinks again for a bit. read more

The vegan breakfast bun was terrible - barely any tofu in the scramble, it was mostly potato, which should not even be part of a tofu scramble. My fiance and I both ordered the vegan breakfast bun and both of our buns were burnt (top and bottom) and all contents of the sandwich were cold!! The crispy mushrooms were way too oily, the crispy potatoes were not crispy and also way too oily. Everything was totally subpar. Even their sauce is so inauthentic. I can make a better sandwich at home. The service was also very slow and the staff was not friendly. Only the setting and environment were nice - probably a good place to come for coffee and study/chat. Don't waste your money here - support Just What I Kneaded down the street instead!! read more

This review is in regard to the repair shop. I busted one of the links on my chain during my ride, so I stopped at spoke which was recommended by another bike shop. I waited about 15 minutes in line before being assisted. I asked if they had the chain I needed and they looked, but they were out of stock... except for one. They said it was "promised" to a regular customer even though he hadn't paid for the part or service. They told me they could order it, but it would be a five day wait. I'm unsure what the policy is for this kind of thing, but it was quite upsetting to know that I didn't receive the same service simply because I was not a regular. read more

Did you know you can go bar hoping on the bike path? This is where I start. I fill up my air for free then bug out! They have a bike shop but are always pretty busy. So you might not get a quick fix but I'm not sure how they handle it. The girl and guy that work at the bike shop are super cool. Good selection of stuff for such a small retail area. They have beer and wine and coffee of all kind. Pet friendly yet I haven't seen anyone with a cat there yet but lots of dogs and I saw a girl with a big bird of some kind. They even have live music and open mic nights. It's a perfect Sunday funday activity and after you start feeling tipsy head on out to the next bar on the bike path. read more

I love the colors, the river, and the patrons - always make me feel happy and relaxed to be by the river, see roller skaters, cyclists, beautiful graffiti art and tatoos, and happy puppies! I've tried this place out twice and haven't had good experiences either time unfortunately. The concept is amazing I love the way everything is set up and their menu has a lot of things with great potential! I came to just get a coffee and found out that for sweeteners all they had was vanilla flavoring. Not only that but the prices are actually insane. The average coffee is $4.50 ish but with adjustments it starts to add up. A coffee that I was planning to get for $4 ended up being $6.50 with milk and sweetener changes. The other time I came I had the matcha latte but it was extremely watery and had barely any sweetness to it either. The other main thing that really set me off was the vibe of the place. The workers weren't too friendly and wouldn't come help even after standing there for a few mins. The customers there were also very odd. If you have ever watched the show Atlanta by Donald glover, the best way to explain the vibe is sort of like a scene out of that. Everyone felt very fake and just off. I wish I could give this place a better review but honesty is what counts and I just didn't enjoy it very much. read more

Really lively spot with a super unique location. At the end of a residential street that dead ends on the LA River bike path. With its unique geography, this place is a magnet for bicyclists but plenty of others arrived by car and foot (including us). They offer a large menu of coffee and tea drinks along with what I would describe as bar or gastropub items for breakfast and lunch. What we loved the most about the place was how sunny it was (don't worry there are umbrellas) and the plethora of people that gave this locale good energy. Pretty solid, central spot next to the LA river, definitely represents how this area is up-and-coming with vengeance. I think my meal is a microcosm of experience and cost. I ordered the spoke burger, and a can of beer. My total, with a 15% tip, came out to jusssst shy of $40. The fries were warm (not hot--some were cold) and for some reason the catchup is very sparse. The burger was great. The brioche bun was on point, the veggies and the beef were full of flavor. Good quality for sure. It's just that... a burger, fries and a beer can was $37 I would probably come here and skip the alcohol, and maybe get something a little more reasonable like avocado toast and a coffee. The proliferation of virtually every business now asking for a tip has become overwhelming and obnoxious, especially in industries like this where tip doesn't go for "service", but rather seems to subsidize the employees lack of pay: I placed my order at a window, received a buzzer, picked up my food at the window. I cleaned my table before I ate, and bussed my table when I left... that's all fine, nothing problematic at all. I don't expect to be "served" and in fact prefer self-bussing etc. But if there's no service why is there a service tip option? The venue and ambiance is outstanding, plenty of seating, lots of space for everybody, all patrons seem to get along. Generally nice, and if I happen to bike in, there's plenty of spots for my bike. Came here for lunch during a visit to Frogtown. Line wasn't too long for a Saturday noon, but there were tons of groups there ordering. Ordered a Spoke Burger and the Eggs, Toast, and Potatoes; the register staff was very courteous and helpful when we had any questions. The wait for the food was a bit long, but it was understandable since there were so many people. Table space wasn't too hard to find either. The food was absolutely delicious. The burger was well-made, with the patty being an excellent medium, and the waffle fries were excellently seasoned and crispy. The eggs and potatoes were all very fresh and cooked well as well. The ambience was very interesting and enjoyable. Lots of groups were there either preparing or relaxing after a bike ride, and the decor screamed art everywhere. I was looking forward to trying this place and I finally went with my friend for lunch yesterday. I love their concept (even though I know nothing about bikes) and their plentiful outdoor seating. You go up to the window to place your order and to pick up your food, there is no service there. There was a little bit of a line when we got there since it was lunch time. When I got to the window to order, the ladies who were at the register looked confused- there was an awkward pause and I had to say hello first- very odd. I proceeded to place my order, my friend got the chicken club sandwich and I, in attempts to be healthy, ordered the veggie burger. It was 12:53pm when we ordered our food. We grabbed some waters at the water station across from the order window and found some seats. They have small round tables or communal rectangular tables. It was a chilly day and it would have been nice if they had turned on the heat lamps, I saw another customer fiddle with it as well About 20 minutes later and seeing other people who had ordered after us get their food, I went up to the window to ask if our food was going to be ready soon. They said it will be up next. About 5 minutes later our food was ready. The presentation was good but the taste was subpar. My friend seemed to enjoy his sandwich, but my veggie burger was burnt to a crisp. Should I have gone up to complain? Probably but then wait another 20 minutes for a veggie burger? Nah. Not worth it, I basically was turned off by that, I mean it was not a cheap veggie burger and now I regret not ordering a regular meat burger (although perhaps that would have been burnt too). All in all, a disappointing experience. Probably won't be returning anytime soon, the service was hectic and lackluster and the food was not worth the money unfortunately. read more

I can't understand all the good reviews after the experience I had here today. Maybe I just came here on a bad day, but it shouldn't take 2 hours to wait in line, order food and get that food, especially when it's chips and salsa, peanut butter toast and a burger and fries. A truly absurd dining experience I will not choose to experience again. This was our second time coming here, and my friend joked it would take us an hour to get our food like it had the first time. Hard to find parking because there is none. You have to park on the streets in the residential area. However the Spoke burger and waffles fries were worth it! So yummms! Absolutely ecstatic about my visit to Spoke! An absolute gem in every sense. From the moment I stepped in, I was swept away by its charm. The food is a masterpiece. I got a cortado and it was the closest thing to my favorite coffee near my home in NY I've ever had. Also got the tofu scramble which was fresh and such a good amount of food. The service was also great -- they were super warm and seemed to genuinely care about your experience. What struck me most was the harmony between aesthetics and quality. Often, places either do well with appearance or in the food, but Spoke kicked butt in both areas. It's a testament to their dedication to providing an all-encompassing experience. Don't get spoked by this bicycle cafe! I stumbled across this place while biking along the LA River and had to stop by for its immaculate vibes. It is bustling with plenty of seating as well as a bike shop, nourishment (food and drinks!), and bathroom. The decor is eclectic and colorful- very bustling on a late Sunday afternoon. A great place to people watch or take a break after biking. There is free wifi so you can even catch up on work here! I chose to order one of their specialty coffees, Orange Chocolate Cappuccino, which was $7.20 after tip and tax. It is on the expensive side but worth it for a caffeine fix and a break. The coffee has the faintest hints of orange and chocolate, a subtly sweet flavor. I would prefer it to be sweeter and probably would stick to trying one of their food items in the future. read more

The bicycle track along the almost non-existing L.A. river provides a safe opportunity to spin the legs a little bit on a weekend. Best of all, is that there are two wonderful restaurants along the track that are even without the exercise worth to visit. One is the Waxpaper (see elsewhere) and the other the Spkoke Bicycle Café. Today was a beautiful day to be out and about for all the Angelenos. After a bike ride, we decided to grab a quick lunch here, it was a little after 1pm. There was a short line to order. And it took almost AN HOUR to get our food!!! Im sure the kitchen was backed up but still, that was an unreasonably long wait for a breakfast bun and a breakfast tostada. I ordered the Chicken Bacon Sandwich with waffle fries instead of the salad. This was a super tasty breast of marinated chicken and smoked bacon with provolone, pickled onions, and garlic aoli sandwiched between freshly baked rustic sourdough bread. The chunky waffle fries were delicious too. I was stuffed. The locally sourced kombucha on draft was perfect for me...sweet, slightly bubbly, and healthy. ;) If you're riding here, there are racks and plenty of space to park your bike. There's even a bike shop to rent or service your bike that is literally next door. This place makes me want to bike more so I can eat more. Definitely biking back one of these days! read more

Spoke feels a little bit like a piece of San Francisco or Seattle brought to LA. It's funky in a nostalgiac way that you just don't see anymore in so many major cities. The owners are Dead Heads so that tells you the place always has top notch vibes. And truly some of the best espresso in town, if not the best. Locally roasted by a single guy that does weekly deliveries. If you're a vegan/vegetarian, this place is heaven. I've actually never had a bad meal here. Even the salsa they make in house is like "whoah, whats in here?" Everything is so flavorful. I'm not sure how they prep that tempeh, but you will actually dream about it. Taking in a sunset with a cold beer on the river here is next level. I always recommend this place to friends visiting, because you just won't find a place like this anywhere else in LA. They are always hosting super fun community events like trivia, charity bike rides, etc. and with a huge open patio, I've never had a problem finding a space to bring friends. read more

Spoke is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. The main attraction is their waffle fries which are PERFECT. The right amount of salt, satisfyingly crunchy, and never greasy. The breakfast burrito is up there with my favorites across the city. Eggs, crispy potatoes, homemade salsa, and a fantastic garlicky sauce that I'm amazed I have the discipline to not eat in 3 giant bites. The chipotle sauce they serve on the side is the perfect smoky sidekick to take you to burrito heaven. The avocado toast starts with Bub and Grandmas amazing bread, which honestly on its own as toast is incredible! On top of the bread is a delicious avocado mash topped with roasted corn, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes and bright citrusy arugula. 10/10 would and will eat again! Aside from the tasty food, the space is awesome with plenty of outdoor seating, but even better is that they open up to the LA river bike path where you can take a stroll or just hang out and watch the cyclists cruise on by. read more

Last weekend, while my family and I were walking along the bike path and taking in the view of the nonexistent river next to us, we suddenly became desperate for a restroom. As we continued walking down the path, we saw Spoke Bicycle Café beckoning us onto it. After taking care of business, we decided that the menu looked enticing enough and we stayed for breakfast. Boy, was that the right call! What a hidden gem this place is. It's packed with bicyclists and a mish mosh of families and friends grabbing a beer and a quick bite to eat. We settled on the avocado toast, the breakfast tostada, and the grilled cheese. We also ordered a side of the potatoes and waffle fries. My sister tried their vanilla latte and I got a freshly squeezed orange juice! All of the food looked and tasted amazing! The vibes are very relaxed and seeing all these cyclists almost made me want to rent a bike and ride in the wind. They do have bike rentals by the hour as well if you're into bikes! That would be a cute date idea too. I would definitely come back again for breakfast. It was a bit chilly since it's outdoor seating only so bring an extra jacket if you're a weakling like me. I'm not entirely sure how to get here directly since we walked here but there must be street parking somewhere. If you see a long line when you get here, just stick it out. I have eaten at Spoke numerous times and find the food to mostly be delicious, especially the way they make their potatoes and fries. However, recently my wife, toddler, and I had a bad experience with one of their staff. We were at one of their outside tables when a large white man in a hat came out and started to berate me for sitting there, saying that the table was not supposed to be outside. I said that the table and chairs were outside when we arrived, and that we wanted to be outside because it was too loud and noisy inside. Continuing in a hostile manner, he said they had to be moved inside. I said I have a family here, can you help me? He then got another staff person to help move the table and chairs inside. It was at this point that he gruffly explained that specific table and its chairs couldn't be outside or they would be cited (they have other chairs and tables outside). Ok, I get it if there's some kind of city code issue. But don't come out and engage with a customer (and the only family of color there) in a hostile way. How about you don't assume I did something bad, be polite, and explain the situation? It's too bad that this has to happen in a gentrifying neighborhood, it definitely makes you look really bad. read more
