Easy rentals ($12/hr for first two hours) -- they gave us a lock & and basket for an extra $3, and we rented 4 casual bikes and rode all the way to the palisades and back no problems! We even used the lock to lock up all 4 bikes with no problems at the Santa Monica pier. read more

I have been going to Spokes 'N Stuff for accessories and tune-ups and anything else I needed ever since I received my beautiful bike as a gift from a friend about 7-8 years ago. Before I lived close enough to bike there, on my previous bike, I went to the other places mentioned in some of the reviews (Helen's, iMartin, etc) and also Santa Monica Cyclery. The other shops are brightly lit, yes, have outgoing staff, yes, all the things the negative reviewers find important, and usually more expensive, too. Although I don't go to Joey's shop for the low prices, I always know he isn't going to rip me off. And I don't think fake-happy customer service and bright, beautiful shops are important in the long run, I'm not going to take them home, right? I'm going to take my bike home. So I want a shop that is reliable (they are), trustworthy (they are), no nonsense (they are) and not trying to upsell me or get me to pay for something I don't need--Joey's always been straightforward about what my bike needs or doesn't need. Every time except the last time, I took my bike in and the work was done the same day, so I just assumed that it was always same-day service at his shop. I'd drop my bike with Joey, cross the street to the outdoor flea market at the school, and Joey would call me in an hour or so to let me know my bike was ready, and I'd walk back across the street to pick it up. This last time, I did arrive before he closed, yes, but it was late enough in the day this time that there wasn't enough time to get the work done before he closed. I tried to convince him to help me anyway, but in reality, he would never close on time if he allowed every customer to get him to stay late, and from the look of the other reviews, there are a lot of people who are expecting that--he'd never be able to leave. So I rented a bike to ride home and to return the next day when coming to pick up my own. Before I left on the rental bike, he suggested I attach one of my own removable taillights to my backpack so I would be extra visible on my way home a few miles away as it looked like it might be getting dark outside soon, and then he helped me to do just that. And when I returned the next day for my own bike, he also helped me adjust the seat on my bike (no charge), and made sure I was completely satisfied before I left. I have noticed that there are some very entitled people in the world these days, expecting to be treated like royalty wherever they spend money. I don't think there is any reason a customer should be treated like garbage, but I'm not getting that was necessarily what was happening here, I think they just weren't being treated like royalty. I really don't care to deal with the fake-smiles, the upselling, the insincere folks I've encountered with other shops and stores; some of them very obviously had tried to make as much money off me as possible. It really is a breath of fresh air to deal with someone I feel is more like a concerned big brother with a dry sense of humor. And it really breaks my heart to see some of the really deliberately nasty reviews, I can assure you they do not deserve that. If there is something factual that wasn't great, say so, but the rude, opinionated, mean reviews, some even with foul language, are even worse than the treatment they claim they received. It's one thing when someone is not perfectly poised at all times in the moment, it's another to write mean things about someone at your keyboard where no one sees who you are and how YOU are behaving. I know this shop really cares about doing a great job helping bicycle owners take good care of their bikes. If that is important to you, too, then go. If not, as you know, there are other shops. This is the shop I choose. read more

Not sure what people are complaining about. I brought in my my 9 year old bike from sports chalet I'm emotionally attached to. Had it covered with a tarp outside and besides the gear, chain and tires - all other parts had to be replaced. Joey don't only charge me a fair price but had it back to me very quickly. It rides better than I remember and still has many miles for me to enjoy it I recommend this repair shop/ bike shop to anyone read more

I just picked up my foldable Mini BMW bike from a tune-up and front tire replacement. I paid $125 for the service. I really hate to leave this comment and don't intend to make anybody's business harder. The bike is filthy as it was brought. It is very dusty and dirty. He says they just wiped it. All other shops I have spoked included a full-blown washing of the bike. The chain and gears are still dirty and not lubricated. He says they did put enough lubrication. The image shows how dirty the gears are. I would have loved to the metal shining. They did not lubricate anything else on the bike. He says it is not necessary. But I asked him on the phone multiple times he said they would do everything. The seat was not checked and it needed to be fastened. I could not sit on it on the way back. He said they took a test drive. The rear brake is super tight you can find yourself on the floor as you hit it. The replaced tire looks so cheap and odd it does not fit the nature of this bike and it is not really my complaint here. The reason I brought the bike for tune-up was that the price on the website for the tune-up is $65 and they charged me $80 because he claims the price went up. I can't tell the difference with the gears, they should be fine. But overall I am very dissatisfied with the service. I had inquired with a few other shops before taking the bike here. their price was fair and they included everything this store did not do. I don't have to mention but seems obvious that friendliness does not exist in this store either you speak on the phone or face to face. I am sorry Joey but the service you provided for a tune-up for $80 is not fair at all. read more

I had initially given this place 5 stars, but I need to downgrade it to 1 Star. It's a little independent bike shop, and I used to like supporting them. Also, this review is not a reflection on Joey, who has only been direct and chill with me in all of our interactions... I just went in to pick up my repair - which was quality work on their part, by the way. They took a while to get it done, but I'm not stressing on that. What I am stressing about is how their employee completely ignored me, didn't say "hi, I'll be right with you" or acknowledge my presence in any way for about 2-3 minutes, then flipped out on me. I was standing there waiting around, saw my bike on the showroom floor in the middle of the store - I wasn't walking into a restricted area or anything - and I started looking at it, checking the work that was done while the dude was busy. Once the guy noticed me checking out my bike, he starts yelling at me. "SIR YOU NEED TO WAIT YOUR TURN, THAT IS A REPAIR, NOT FOR SALE!" I explained that it was actually my bike, I had a receipt, and I was just inspecting it while he was busy. "Chill dude, it's my bike. I have my receipt right here. Just checking it out while you're busy" He continued to yell "YOU DIDN'T ASK. I DON'T KNOW YOU. I DON'T KNOW THAT BIKE IS YOURS. YOU'RE VERY UNGRATEFUL AND IMPATIENT, I AM HELPING SOMEONE ELSE. YOU NEED TO WAIT YOUR TURN." Look, I'll concede the point that he didn't know me. But I was waiting my turn... I was literally just looking at my bike which was out in the open. I was trying not to interrupt him. Anyway, he yelled so much that I eventually yelled back at him. I hate yelling at customer service people. I feel dirty. I was shaking after the interaction... He went from 0 to 100 instantly, and just stayed up there the whole time. Seriously, terrible customer service dudes. Unreal. read more

Dude is super rude in here. Never greets anyone who walks in. Acts annoyed with anyone who asks anything. Had one bike hanging right in the mix with every other bike that's for sale and when I asked the price of the bike he says "not for sale" with no sold tag or regular tag on it or I wouldn't ask and god forbid bother him about it. The staff is incredibly rude! It takes a lot to for me write a bad review but I was shocked by the horrible service here. I was never called when my bike was ready and when I called to inquire, I was asked what kind of bike to which the guy responded "oh ya the old one." He then could not give me the total for the cost over the phone as he "couldn't read the chicken scratch of his fellow coworker." Sadly, I won't be back here despite good experiences previously. Simply put: the owner of this shop would rather not do any work. I was actually warned of this by a friend who had a similar experience, but I had faith! Needed help setting up some tubeless tires. Already mounted the tire and put in tire sealant but for some reason the bead wouldn't set. His solution was that I need to put tubes in it....and that he was going to charge $7 more per tire for needing to take OUT the sealant in order to put tubes in...on a tubeless tire that were not inexpensive and were intended to be TUBE LESS. For whatever reason, that was his only solution and he'd just rather not do what's right for your bike. Glad this guy can stay open when he deliberately turns away business - just, maybe don't waste your time and find another shop like he'll tell you to do anyway. 1 star for being somewhat nice. Another star for the help of suggesting a different place to take my tires. -_- read more

First to be fair I would start by saying that he delivered a good job with what the bike needed and on the time promised which is a crucial part of his shop. The other part that got me shocked was that he charged me 75 dollars for an hour of work. I am still not sure of this is normal or not. Will I ever come back no. As the guy that works there has a arrogant attitude that he seriously needs to work on. I would politely ask why charged 75 and his reply was just non sense. Not sure what was going on but got a weird, violent vibe from this guy and seriously thought he was gonna snap. And I imagine it hasn't been easy for small businesses lately but it doesn't give someone the right to treat another person so poorly. I will concur with other reviewers, that there is a very rude employee here. I believe he is the owner, or the manager (not sure). You can see that I'm not alone. I went in to get my folding bike fixed, two or three years ago. He was not only rude, but he mocked the quality of my bike, basically telling me that it's a piece of shit. I didn't go in there for his opinion on my purchase, I went in there to get something repaired. I went in another time, and had a similar experience. Complete rudeness. And condescension. I live less than two blocks away from the shop. I was so put off by these experiences, that I've told everyone I know not to go there, and I make the effort to go down to Beverly, or over to La Brea, when I need service on my bike. I will not patronize this business. I wish people would listen to these reviews. I think the only reason that this place succeeds, is their location, and the fact that people need bikes during a pandemic. I certainly do not want this business to fail, but if they are going to be rude to customers, I'm going to let people know. read more

SURPRISE! Another bad review. Add it to the many piling up here. Here's mine: I'm ten miles from home and miles from any other shop I have heard of. I get two pinched tires on a nasty hole that I didn't see behind a car's tire. I'm stranded and it's 5:00pm. I google and find this shop to be the closest and it says "open 'til sundown". Whatever the eff that means, I call them on it and head over there. I call just to be sure, and he says they are open until 6. He shouts the time at me btw and hangs up before I can ask anything else about the tubes I need. DAMN HIM. I race over there now, and make it by 5:50pm. I had a funny feeling this shop wasn't going to be an awesome experience. Wish I had checked Yelp before I went, too. They are packing up bikes outside and I run in to buy tubes. He tells me its $11 to change a flat. First of all, that's expensive. Second of all, dude, I got this. I need the tubes please and to borrow the pump. He says NO. NO! Can you believe it? He actually says to me, "I can sell you the parts but we're closing." I said, "It's not even 6pm yet!" He looks at his watch, 80's asshole style, and says, "It's 5 of 6." NOT 6PM YET DUDE. I looked him in his face and asked him why he would leave a biker stranded in the middle of the city without two working tires. Why he couldn't let me take 5 minutes to change my tires, WHICH I AM BUYING FROM YOU, and borrow the floor pump that is right at the cash register calling my name. He told me, "You can buy the tubes but you can't use the pump. We're closing." You, sir, are an asshole. One of the tubes he sold me was faulty and the valve wouldn't open so there I was at 6:30pm stuck on Melrose without a soul to call and ten miles away from home. I WILL NEVER GO HERE EVER. I will never recommend this place. In fact, I will spit on the street outside of it if I ever have to pass it again. This kind of service and treatment is deplorable. You should not be part of the bike community that is so welcoming in Los Angeles. read more

The last time I was here, I went in to ask if they had any cross or interrupter brake levers for my fixed gear. It took maybe five minutes to explain what I meant, and in the end he thought I was talking about the suicide levers found on 70's road bikes. He just so happened to have a cross bike hanging on the wall with the levers I was looking for so I pointed and said, "those, do you have any of those?" To which he replied, "oh no, no way. I don't know where you're going to find those." And then chuckled to himself as if I was talking crazy talk. Shocked, I was ready to leave this bastion of uninformity, when the guy saw my bike and commented, "Now, what you're running there is really dangerous." I have a front brake and front brake only on my fix. Confused, I asked him what he was talking about. "If you're only going to have one brake, you should put in the back, or you'll go over your handlebars if you go down a hill." "It's a fixed gear," I told him. "Oh, I know. You should still have the brake in the back." "Right, whatever you say, thanks." So not only did this guy not know what a cross lever was but he a) did not have a clue as to the mechanics of a fixed gear in which the rear brake is of little use with the application of pedal resistance; b) dispensed bad advice in regards to bicycle mechanics - that is, at least 70% of a bicycle's stopping power is found in the front brakes. Try stopping a bicycle using only the rear brakes, then try using only the front brakes. See which one you trust more when you face being t-boned by an SUV. c) insulted me by assuming I lack the skills necessary to operate a brake properly. I haven't been back since. read more

First off i'd like to give NO STARS but it wouldn't post my review so i'm forced to give 1 star... that's how bad this shop was. I live down the street and thought for convenience I'd go in and get a rear break light. I come in and the guy behind the desk not only had any reaction to my entry but when we'd ask a few questions on lighting he acted as if he couldn't bother to even open his mouth to answer! When we continued to ask a few more questions it was clear he was getting annoyed by us?! Wow! After coming from "orange 20" the other day I was amazed how really bad this store really is. At least in orange 20 they talked to us with interest and with basic human social skills. let's just say i was so shocked by this guy's attitude that i went home and knew i had to put up a review of this place, which i haven't done in almost 6 months, so i can spare anyone else from going here. please take your business elsewhere, there's alot more businesses out there who deserve your time and money! read more

I went in to Spokes 'n stuff to have a mechanic check out the bb shell of a frame I bought on Ebay. Essentially there was some ovalization in the shell and I wanted to see if was still usable. I'm sure these guys don't see to many bikes with eccentric bottom brackets, but the mechanic could not understand that I wanted him to actually check out my frame i.e. bust out a caliper, take some measurements, maybe put the bottom bracket in there and tighten it up. If it's out of round, it could be a big problem... but that wasn't in the cards, he just kind pointed out how an eccentric bottom bracket would work.... hey buddy... I know how it works, what I'm driving at is will it work in this beat up frame. After trying to approach this about 6 different ways I could tell that any further attempts would be fruitless so I gave up and walked out. In Spoke's N Stuffs defense, they probably get a bunch of know it all customer's like Karen G (see below). who can miraculously assemble an entire bike, but can't manage to put on a front "breaks". Really? do you think anybody believes you actually assembled a bike but can't install a canti BRAKE. Heads up bro, bolting up your wheelset isn't building a bike. Reminds me of the time I did a body off resto of a '78 Nova, but had to get a mechanic to help me install the floor mats. The store itself full of cheap fixed gears with fluorescent colored rims, and other lame hipster stuff. I also saw some lowrider type bikes. If that's your bag, then I would check this place out, if not, than steer clear. From what I can tell iMartin is the only decent shop in the area. read more

As you might've read from the other reviews, the guy who runs this place is a grumpy old douche. I (as a CUSTOMER!) would consistently go out of my way to be nice to this guy...only to catch a dismissive or unhelpful attitude in return. It's like being waited on by a bitchy little teenager. Only ever ask him questions that require a 1-word response, or you'll be really disappointed. Or better yet, don't go here. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because his subordinates are always friendly, fast and accommodating. Though I feel sorry for all of them, having such a boss. read more

I've been meaning to get a bike for a long time. I've already exhausted all the good hang out places withing a 15 minute walking radius around my apartment. But I would rather not have to get in my big black truck and dance out of my subterranean parking space. Everyone in my building wonders how the hell I park down there in those cramped quarters. So for the distances in between walking and driving, I got a bike. The owner, Joey, helped me out. The bike came with lifetime check ups (a $50 value) and any accessory I bought they would install for free. I'd love to be able to take Maddy with me on the bike. She ain't gonna run along the side because she gets tired too easily. I blame it on the short snout. So I got a basket on the front for $35. When I took it home, Maddy didn't fit because it was too small. So I went down to exchange it and he credited me the $35, took off the small basket and put on the big basket ($50). Honestly, the customer service isn't the greatest in the world. If you're looking for a guy to hold your hand and smile and make small talk, this ain't the place for you. Joey is no nonsense and I understand his straightforward attitude. So it doesn't bother me. You can get a bike or accessories for less somewhere else. I go here because of the bike service and the convenience of it being down the street. read more
