How I knew nothing of this establishment is beyond me!! Me...the lover of all things karaoke ! It is nestled within the parking lot of an unassuming shopping strip. Located right next door to a crab joint, this place houses rooms filled with fun...karaoke rooms. A friend of mine decided to host a party and rented one of the rooms, but a purveyor of karaoke may feel inclined to remain in the gen ad area. The music in the main space was decent so why not. The room we were in was spacious, housed plenty of seating, and had a private karaoke stage. The drinks left no impression whatsoever but the service was ok. I cannot comment on the food, as you are able to bring in your own, which the hostess did. I will be returning, however, I will not be indulging in any mixed cocktails as they were not worth their steep price tag. read more

Our waitress who was serving our room was a little bit slow and brought the wrong drinks about 1/3 of the time, but otherwise we had a great time and I would definitely recommend this spot if you are looking for an easy inexpensive place to celebrate casually with friends! read more

Spotlight. Where to begin. I've heard about Spotlight for years and finally made it in. I guess years worth of suspense and up-talk only led to disappointment. My friend organized an event here for her birthday and in Spotlight's defense, she did not make a reservation. So even though we arrived early (9pm), all the tables were reserved and we had no where to sit. There was no sympathy from the staff and some were rude, but we finally found a nice man who let us sit at one of the ends of the long tables near the front stage. The waitstaff was super slow and not polite, nor did she care about our business. I was over it before she even finished taking our first order. There's a table minimum, so we were obligated to buy more. There was a $10 cover, the drinks were average price (~$8/drink), bottled water only and they are expensive $3, the stage is super average, and the sign up list is chaos. I probably won't be back unless I'm obligated to celebrate someone's birthday again. read more

I will say from the very start that I'm not a big fan of karaoke. I have a terrible voice so you're not going to see me out there belting tunes in the open. So why did I find myself at a karaoke spot on a Saturday evening? For a friend's birthday party. Spotlight is located in a shopping center on Westheimer along with Minuti Coffee and a binch of other businesses. Parking wasn't a problem. As you walk in, there's a large bar in the center. Towards the back is a large stage where the karaoke takes place. Depending on how busy it gets, you may have to wait a while to get your turn. If you want more privacy, you can rent a room for your group. This allows you to do your thing, enjoy the time with your friends, and not worry about sharing the spotlight (pun intended). When it comes to the drinks, I was happy to see that the bartender had a heavy pour. My go-to that night was the always classic rum and Coke. When you receive this drink, and it's clear rather than Coke-colored, you know the bartender has actually hooked you up with a rum with a splash of Coke. It was an interesting night to say the least. A large group of middle-aged women was seated next to us. We had a similarly-sized group of guys. Eventually, they started mingling with us and one of the women was the epitome of a hot mess. It made for an entertaining night. I will say that the crowd was a little ratchet. Something to keep in mind. I know they have another location in Midtown but I haven't been to that one to compare. read more

I've been booking a private room at this place for years and they never disappoint! The service is always amazing and they aren't out to scam you like most places. I love how straight forward they are and they don't have any hidden fees. They started doing a non refundable cleaning fee which I don't mind because I am always too drunk to clean up so that works out fine for me! I love this place, my family loves this place too! This was a good night out. The set up here was very nice. Though they have a main area stage the private rooms are what makes this place nice to me. The personal rooms allow people to be more free to go on stage. The lyrics to some of the songs were completely off which of course brought down some experiences. I can't speak for the entire group I was with but when I did try to place a drink order it took while to get the waitress and the drink came out to more than I was told. A group of us moms with autistic kiddos (older teenagers and young adults) rent out a room several times a year for private birthday parties and it's always a big hit. The folks who run Spotlight are really good to us. They greet us with open arms, hug our kids and let us bring in our own food which is wonderful because a lot of our kids are on gluten free and dairy free diets. For 3 hours our kids take the stage and sing like they're rock stars! The place is clean, there's a stage with microphones, the songs are plentiful (no one has wider range in musical interest than autistic people and this place has all the music!), the equipment works and the mics are professional (for our professionals). We all have a blast and when the time's up everyone leaves happy and exhausted and ready to do it again next time. read more

So, it's true that Spotlight Karaoke (the Westheimer location) is not located in the most glamorous of strip centers. But damn, they will show you a good time. My friend and I really like to karaoke. And it was going to be my birthday. So I called up Spotlight Karaoke to reserve a room. The process was seamless, and Charlie (the manager/owner) is very prompt and very responsive. He calls you personally to make sure your reservation is taken care of. You do need a deposit to hold the room, and you have to meet a specific tab in order to pay for the room. We arrived to check out the room. We had probably one of their largest rooms, which can host 20-25 (I included a photo). It was... enormous. It was pleasantly shocking how amazing this room was My friend immediately commented that it was like the champagne room of karaoke clubs. And yes, yes it was. The sound system and mics are extremely easy to use. My 85-year-old grandmother could probably do it. The volume is easy to adjust. And as a technology consultant, let me just pause here and take a moment for how grateful I am for Spotlight's INCREDIBLE song search. This is how karaoke should be done. NO REMOTES and NO OUTDATED SONG LISTS and NO PUNCHING IN STUPID SONG NUMBERS- just a computer and keyboard to type in the name of the song or artist, and bam, the database returns all items matching your search criteria. Double-click, and the song is added. IT IS SO EASY. IT IS AMAZING. So our queue got started with some Trey Songz and Backstreet Boys. Michelle, our excellent waitress, was always available and very attentive. We were able to request that she open tabs for people separately, and she did an amazing job. There was cake, there was Hennessy, there was dancing, and yes, there was belting out of Adele and Lauryn Hill. The private room reservations last for the entire night till the bar closes out at 2AM. Our scheduled bartender was nowhere to be found so Lexi (AMAZING) stepped in and took care of us the whole night. There were a few songs we couldn't find in the library but that didn't stop us from having a great time. Would recommend going and renting a private room with friends! This used to be a very cool karaoke bar. Now it's turned into a terrible place to go due to the type of crowds they get now. I wouldn't suggest single women go here any longer. I've been here before and loved it which is why I'm giving the 2 stars. Otherwise, it'd be a one star. Last night they were really busy and here's the problem we had. They charged us a $10 entrance fee for standing room. Fair enough, except that standing room was in the way of waitresses trying to get to and from the bar. At one point they stopped the music and asked everyone in the standing room to move... not sure where they wanted us to go. Waitresses were flashing lights in people's faces to get them to get out of their way... Also, I turned in my song and the DJ tells me there is a 2 hour wait in que. We didn't want to wait two hours standing there constantly being asked to move with lights flashing in our faces and when there wasn't anywhere to go.. so we left. If the club is packed stop letting ppl in and charging them $$ got entrance. read more

I rented a room to have a birthday party. Everything went great. Reserving the room was easy and quick. When I got there Kelly, our waitress went over everything with me and was very patient explaining the procedures for the night. We never had to wait long for her to take orders or bring drinks. Everyone was happy with the food they ordered. Me and my friends were able to be loud and obnoxious and no one cared. I got a status on our party minimum around midnight. We met all our minimums ($300 plus 20% grat) no problem with about 13 people. It was a blast! Every song was available that we wanted. I would go here again, absolutely! Spotlight is not what it used to be! This used to be the place to be. Well, not anymore. Two of my friends had birthday parties here and we waited over 2 hours for the DJ to call us to sing. He kept calling the same people over and over again. When the bday girl asked why he hadn't chosen her yet, the DJ said he EXPECTED a tip first. I'm sorry but WHAT?! We just paid $10 each to get in and there were about 25-30 of us. Then, we were buying drinks and food non-stop. And, this guy has the audacity to say no tip no song? BYE Spotlight! Furthermore, the waiter brought my fiancé the wrong food, then the waitress ran over & started yelling at him like it was his fault. He asked for a refund and she told him, "No". Really? I went there with a group of friends last week and my car and another person in my parties car were broken into. When I was walking out to go check on my car, the young lady at the entrance made a comment, "they're starting already?" That means they know this is a problem. There were 3 cars vandalized that I could see that night. If this business know this is an issue, they need to hire security or something. We came right when this place opened up and no one really was there. You can actually bring your own food in here before 9. No drinks though This place is pretty small in the main area. I like how you pick a song from the computers in the back and write it on a paper and the DJ or whatever he's called puts it on. The place is very dingy. They even serve sushi, not sure if I would trust it. Place doesn't look very sanitary. Js. The waitress was nice and checked on us frequently. You do have to spend money to sing. The restrooms were not very clean and I get how the chairs are so close together at the tables. I'm guessing that is how they get you to rent a private room. Overall we had a good time. read more

From N'sync (bye bye bye) to Mariah Carey's, All I want for Christmas, we sang our hearts out! Our waitress was extremely attentive! Let's start by saying the only reason this place deserved two stars from me was because the nice owner's wife decided to let my group of friends in without paying the cover. Putting that aside... Lets begin with THERE IS A COVER. Of the numerous karaoke bars I have been to, and I have been to a lot since I looovvee karaoke, I have never been charged a cover to get in. On top of that, I was told to wear my hat straight before I could enter. Must be a fancy place, with a cover fee at the door and strict dress code. THE PLACE WAS GHETTO AS !@#$%. It had several private rooms, and a stage to sing on for those who wanted to sit outside in the open. Very spacious, but very ghetto and run-down looking. We decided to sit outside instead of getting a private room - which was a mistake. WARNING: This is not a place for college students. Everyone there were in there 30's and older., some were MUCH older. The song selection was completely OUTDATED as well. If you wanted any recent songs, you had to search it up on the internet and made sure there was a karaoke version on youtube before you requested it. And with people TIPPING THE DJ to have their song skip to the front of the line, we only got to SING TWICE out of the 3 HOURS we spent there! Not only did we not have fun, but instead, we got to listen to old, raspy voices screeching out lyrics to an endless number of old songs from the 80's and 90's. And now for the prices. EXPENSIVE. The food was a very small proportion given the price, wasn't that good at all, AND we had to wait a long a$$ time because there was only ONE CHEF. A tiny, fragile looking Asian man who looks like he could use a cane to move around. As for the drinks. prices weren't even listed! When all of us got up to pay at the end, we were blown away by how big our bill was. $3 for a bottle of water, and over $10 for my rum and coke, which I could tell was made with well liquor. Cocktails were way above $15 per drink. If you ever feel like going to karaoke, there are plenty of other better options around Houston. read more
