I was a huge fan of this place for years growing up and felt like they went downhill in 2021. That visit was not pleasing bc the bread was too soft and meat un-seasoned. Before that, I remember the baguette bread and very well-seasoned meat, etc. These were the closest to ones from Philly, bc even to this day, other places often make atrocious Philly sandwiches. I went here recently a few times for the first time in 5 years. I ordered the 6 inch Back Home Philly with no cheese, plus a side of tomatoes togo. The bread was more of a soft, dense and slightly chewier type rather than crispier version like the former baguettes. It was still a great bread option resembling one you'd get from an authentic Philly sandwich. The onions n mushrooms were obviously great n cooked well adding more excitement in taste. The tomatoes were nicely cool n refreshing with some contrast to the warm saltiness of this sub. The meat itself was seasoned enough and tender in every bite. Not as deep in seasoning as years ago, but still definitely done right. It was a delicious, fresh and comforting sandwich and would definitely come here for it at times when craving a Philly steak. I would say Jake's and Philly Flats are the only ones like the real thing down here. I do prefer the seasoning from Jake's even more tbh. This is a great and very casual sports bar that you can have confidence in. Everything is done right without being over the top. The beer selection is good not great, the whiskey and bourbon selections are shocking impressive. You definitely should not leave thirsty as there's something for everyone. The Philly cheesesteak is the hidden gem. I would visit just for the Philly, it's that's good. There's a fair amount of TV's and games. I stopped by Jake's Sports Bar for the Euro and also the Copa America soccer finals. Me and my buddy were looking for a sports bar which wouldn't be packed. My buddy thought Jake's Sports Bar would be a good choice. They have a complimentary lot and I had no trouble finding parking. Ambiance (4/5): Jake's isn't a fancy spot. It's a neighborhood sports bar. And that is more than fine by me. They have plenty of TVs so you can catch the game. There's plenty of seating, both bar seating and tables. They play the sound for the prime game at the time. It's everything you need if you're a sports fan. Service (4/5): Since I was there for a major sports event, I was worried that the service would be good. While they were struggling a bit with volume, they did a pretty good job given the circumstances. I'm sure service is a little quicker when you're there on a regular day. Drinks (5/5): I love some good drink specials and you have that here at Jake's. Not only do they have happy hour specials, but they also had special gameday specials. That was much appreciated. Since we watched both games, we were there for a good chunk of a Sunday. Getting a discount on all of that counts for something in my book. I had both beer and cocktails while I was there. Food (5/5): Jake's started off as a Philly cheesesteak restaurant before expanding their space and becoming a bar and restaurant. Since this is what they're known for, this is what I ordered. With fries. They have several varieties of Philly cheesesteaks and it lived up to the hype. For bar food, this is about as good as it gets. A fresh hoagie roll. The meat sliced thin and grilled just right. Melted cheese. And crisp fries. They have a large menu and I'd definitely return to check out some more items. Jake's Sports Bar reminds me of Nick's Place which is also located in the Galleria area. My BF had the hot wings. They were crispy and good however suuuuuuuuper hot! These are not regular hot wings so be careful. The chicken sandwich was horrible. I couldn't finish it. Right after Super Bowl (at the amazing The Deck - one of my go-to joints) a friend and I decided to check out a new place. We randomly selected Jake's. Pull up, parking is free and available, but it might be challenging during a big event...space is limited. Go in and there is plenty of seating and a nice vibe. It was very few people in the building. Less than 15 folks. We sat at the bar. Mind you, there were 3-4 people sitting at the bar upon our arrival. 1st, the Asian bartender (AB), greeted us promptly and asked if we wanted a drink. We said no ty and held small talk asking questions about the establishment, the kitchen, if they have dj/music, typical crowd environment, and so forth. AB walks off to services another customer. Cool. My friend and I are sitting there having chit-chat. Mark (older white gentleman) walks over and ask had we been helped and we said "yes, AB greeted and checked on us." Cool. By this time, 3 men came and sat to my left. The bar had (three) visibly empty seats and the rest of the establishment is practically empty. NOW it might be 20 people in the building. About 15 minutes later, Mark stops by and ask if we were going to have anything to drink or were we just going to chill. We quickly responded, "oh no, we're just going to chill but thank you for asking!" We're stoked and impressed by the customer service at this point! Saying to one another that they are really nice and we'll have to come back to eat and drink...bring our people. Spend money!! 15-20 minutes later, Mark walks up to us and in the most nastiest tone, attitude, very hostile and upset manner says, "you're not ordering anything and YOU NEED TO LEAVE!" (And this is word for word) We are stunned bc it literally took us by surprise!! I immediately started making statements and asking questions matching his energy about the house rules. See dialogue, *Mark's (or staff) replies: We didn't know that was a rule or required for us to order or we have to leave. *Well you're not ordering anything, so you need to leave Is this something you do at your bar bc I've been a lot of places, to a lot of bars and never heard of such a thing. Ever! *The cameras are on and watching. You need to order something or get up Are you the manager or owner? *Yes, I am right now You need to watch how you talk to people! *I was nice and have been patient by letting y'all sit there without ordering. It's a bar. Buy drinks OR MOVE FROM THE BAR (he originally told us TO LEAVE) Ooooohhhh, ok. Got it. I understand what you're trying to convey, but that's not what you said to us the first two times you checked on us/your last statement either or else we would have gladly moved to a table. Now, it's a matter of how you came over here and spoke to us *You need to just get up from the bar -at this moment, we could have moved, but y'all he was so nasty to me, I just couldn't let it go!! - I can and will just sit here at the bar and still not order anything at all just because of the way you're talking to us. So I followed him inside and took video of him and Mark so there would be no mistake of who I'm referring to at Jake's. **I still have the video. I'm unable to load it at this time; maybe it's too long? I should have read the reviews, as it seems to be common and acceptable for the staff to talk to/handle customers in such a negative manner! Update - The staff finds it funny to be rude to guest. I wish the old jakes philly cheese steak still existed. Man those were some good cheesesteaks. That used to be my go to spot back in the day. The old legend of jakes is dead. The cheesesteak is not the same! Not by a long shot. They taste completely different. The cheese was watered down or something. This really was my go to spot for cheese steak for years. Sadly it has changed. The new owners say they use the same bread, better meat and the same cheese whiz it the cheese steak tasted completely different to me. I had a taste for some buffalo lemon pepper wings and stumbled upon Jake's on Uber eats. I ordered eight buffalo wings with lemon pepper, chicken quesadillas, southwestern egg rolls. Everything was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised. I was so hungry that I didn't take a picture. Lol. But trust me, you will not be disappointed. I live in Austin, TX now, but I have been going to Jake's for over a decade. I can still remember when it was half the size. I visit frequently when back in Houston. The place makes the best cheesesteak in the entire city of Houston. Period. I had plenty of places around H-town, and this place gets as close as it can to Philadelphia. Great cut of meat, good tasting cheese & onions, add some A1 steak sauce or some other toppings, you shoud like your meal. If you want to go all out, swap provo for cheese whiz. Always packed at lunch rush hour, but they service people quickly. They have full bar and plenty of beers draft specials. NFL Sunday ticket is on every year. Yes it is a greasy meal. Went in with my wife, who is a Baltimore Ravens fan, at the end of the 3rd quarter yesterday, to catch the final part of the game. Despite over 25 Tvs and an open outdoor deck with ZERO patrons on it view the 2 screens, the rude sexist male bartender stated "You cant come in for the 4th quarter asking to put on the Ravens game." There were also several TV screens in the back room with the same games being played on more than one. We immediately left and watched the final quarter on my NFL Sunday Ticket on a mobile device. Take note: if you are a female patron, DO NOT go on a football Sunday as there is ZERO respect for women and the space is populated by 99% men. Many different fans came out to support their teams. The food was good. I ordered nachos and I could not finish them. The drinks were 7/10.
