This place is a valley gem. A great place to come with friends after work, whether for drinks or a meal. They have a full bar, modern juke box, billiards, darts and an outdoor area for when weather permits. There are a number of large TVs playing a variety of sporting events and it's a great place to meet friends and watch the game. My FAVORITE aspect of this place is their Trivia night- every Tuesday at 8:30pm. This Trivia is no joke and includes sports, entertainment, geography, music, history, science and more. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners get sliding scale bar tab prizes- the more teams that play, the bigger the winnings. I must say that this bar is most definitely in desperate need of management. Most of the staff are brand new, if bartending they're all alone without ANY manger/management around. The kitchen apparently closes when it wants to and doesn't notify the staff. So thinking we have plenty of time to order food and then to be told, the kitchen has closed...sorry. If food is ordered from the bar it's delivered ice cold, cause no one brought it to the bar and just sat back there, wherever it was. First-timer there last night! Fun pub type atmosphere. I went for the live music, which was awesome, but I'll return for the bar food and trivia night on Tuesday. Our group ate....a lot. The schnitzel was awesome as were the brisket sandwich snd philly cheesesteak and fish and chips. The meatball sandwich was a featured special and was terrific with big, tender balls. Service was friendly and helpful with all of our menu questions. The service itself wasn't bad, although our server kept trying to push the additional side charges for all of our food orders which was weird (i.e. if there was an option to add something for extra cost, it wasn't a "would you like to add...", it was a "do you want [side] on the side or on the bun"). The food itself was simply not good, either. I really would like to see them take the chicken schnitzel off the menu. What I ended up with was charred, over cooked chicken, bland mashed potatoes, and chilly, maybe steamed slightly, vegetables, even though the menu said grilled. We also ordered a pastrami sandwich and onion rings - the sandwich was okay, but there was no seasoning on the onion rings - and a bar burger, which wasn't bad, but it had bacon on it that was basically rubber. Pretty good place! The menu has a variety of food from paella to burgers! It's a friendly spot and in the valley and they have different events going on each week! On Sundays and Wednesdays they have comedy night! Seating starts at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm! The comics are amazing! The food is always amazing! I love the fish and chips but the past couple of time I've visited it's been a total different vibe. I've never felt so uncomfortable. Me and my girlfriends got there the first thing we see is the security guy outside smoking a cigar relaxing like he owns the place. The bar area was so unwelcoming it reminded me of a straight ghetto dive bar. The drinks took forever and it felt like I was annoying the bartender for a drink. The atmosphere has completely changed. ---Atmosphere, Service & Parking-- This is a very worthy sports bar/grill with plenty to do. It's pretty large as it has a couple different rooms and a great big patio area. There's about 10 or so seats at the main bar area, with some tables around there. In the next room there's a bunch of tables as well and you can find the same in the patio. There's some TV's around but definitely not like a Yardhouse or anything, it does the job though. So far service has been pretty good. Everyone is friendly and is efficient. You'll find plenty of decor with ads of all sorts of companies/drinks, and the like. There's a pool table, tvs around the various areas, a shuffle board type game, darts and more. There's even an atm in here. On a couple night's I came they were doing comedy night in one of the rooms, so I believe various events go on. Right behind the place there's a small parking lot. Besides that there's parking on side streets around and on Victory Blvd. ---Food, Drinks, & Prices--- They have a pretty good size menu but I haven't tried anything yet food wise or drink wise besides bar drinks. Bar wise you'll find about 20+ draft beers (craft included) with some drinks such as fireball placed appropriately for some quick shots. Prices are friendly and nothing beyond the average price of $6 or so for beers I believe, mixed drinks and liquor drinks seem to be average as well - I can dig it. It is a really nice Wednesday evening to go out for some food and drink while avoiding the weekend rush. The Valley can be mentally complicated when looking for new places to try, especially when expectations, tastes, atmosphere, parking, all have to be taken into consideration. It was around 7 that I arrived and the parking lot in the back was full. Luckily a car was leaving so I waited for that spot. There is only parking for about a dozen cars, street parking holds about 4, and there is a huge lot across the street with big signs posted parking for "XX" business only - tow away. How ridiculous to have all that unused parking. There are 2 entrances, bar side off of Valjean where the parking lot is and on the dining side off of Victory. I came in on the Victory side because the waitresses hang out on the patio and the Serve Station so I could get their attention coming in to make sure they know I'm here. Otherwise, when going to the bar side, you pretty much have to go to the bar to get a menu, order, ask for napkins, etc. Ordered potato skins, three large skins came out with sour cream to dip and a fancy cucumber, tomato, salad side. I like my P-skin cooked a little crispier, and it tasted ok, not terrible. Buffalo wings, a six piece. Had a nice spicy flavor but lacked the fried crunch texture. They were more liked a baked wing tossed in can buffalo sauce, which again, wasn't terrible, but not great. Philly cheese steak which came with fries and another strange fancy cucumber, tomato, salad side. Fries where perfect, salad was like "meh" and the cheese steak meat was good and tasty, I just couldn't get over the strange, mushy, gooey, roll that was used. It was like a giant Van De Kemps hot dog bun that you'd get at the 99 cent store 6 in a bag. Not terrible on the meat, fries, and salad. But missed execution on the roll. Paella was super delicious, a little on the oily side, and the rice it was served on was a too firm. Taste on point, the rice is the hardest to deliver on, too firm or too soft destroys the dish. So, taste was excellent, but the execution was poor. Again, not terrible, not great. Fajita's was pretty good. All the meat was well seasoned, the flour tortillas where big and fluffy, and all the topping served on the side so you can execute the build to your liking. Grilled Salmon was a huge hunk a salmon with a real nice side of moderately seasoned veggies and an unusual hollandaise style sauce with capers mixed in. Everything was good, except the sauce. Sauce on the side next time. The beer selection is good, when they have it. I asked for the Shiner Bock on tap and was told sorry it's out. Then the Windmer Heffenwiesen, which was also out. Then settled on a Blue Moon which I regretted and should have gone on to Coors. Service was good, but not excellent and is everything to expect from this "almost" dive bar, "almost" chain restaurant, "almost" South African cuisine, "almost" excellent. read more

On the corner of Van Nuys and Valjean Ave. right behind Vallarta market. Missed it. Super chill spot. Came here after work on a Wednesday night for some drinks for my coworkers promotion. I saw good reviews and we were hungry so we when we got here we were bummed that the kitchen was now closed. Ugh!! Ordered 4 drinks total and total was just under $40. Not bad. Area wasn't too bad. There's a small parking lot along the side or street parking. Has a pool table inside and a small discreet patio too. We sat in the patio area. There were some smokers outside but it wasn't bad . It was a really nice night out so we sat out there and just talked. Good music and it wasn't blasting so we didn't have to yell at each other in order to conversation with each other. Really liked the vibe here and drinks were pretty good. Will be back again if drinks are in order! read more

Let me be perfectly clear, Springbok is unabashedly a down home SPORTS BAR and proud of it. Other than the South African flags flying every 6 feet surrounding the perimeter of the building, you have no hint that this may be the only eatery in all of Southern California or all of California for all I know that specializes in cuisine from South Africa. South Africa was inhabited by Africans since time immemorial with pastoral Khoisan speaking peoples & later Bantu speakers by the 1300's. In 1652 the Netherlands established a colony at the Cape of Good Hope, and the Dutch descendants spoke a form of Dutch called Afrikaans. In the meantime, French Huguenots, who were persecuted for being Protestants in a Catholic France also came to live in South Africa. In 1795, the British invaded & took over the Cape so the Afrikaners were forced to move up north, and again the British annexed these northern lands in 1902. Since the British also controlled India at the time, Indian labour was also brought in so that a multi-ethnic land was created along with a cuisine that reflected all these ethnicities. There is no way you're going to get cultural, historical, anthropological aspects of South Africa in this unpretentious, artless bar which could just as well be the rowdy, countrified bar in the Australian Outback as depicted in "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". Unfortunately, there was no lady who did those wondrous things with the ping pong balls at Springbok's. Obviously, there were wide screen TV's everywhere showing the World Cup in Brasil. There were two wide screens screaming the soccer sports commentary in the dining area. I thought by ducking out to the patio in front, I could escape the cacophony. Wrong, there were speakers pumping out sports commentary outside, and because the patio faces Victory Boulevard, there is a lot of street noise to go with your dining pleasure. The waitresses were quite accommodating & looked as though they would be comfortable as well in a Southern diner somewhere in Amarillo, TX or Metter, GA. Now I felt I was on a road trip going down the I-10, but this time the food was going to come from the South.....South Afrika. I asked for South African beer to set the mood, but my balloon was 'busted' when the waitress informed me that there was none. So I went for a California microbrew, Scrimshaw Pilsner from Fort Brag which is on Pacific Coast Hwy 1 a ways up north of San Francisco. Scrimshaw was a heavier Pilsner with nice mellow herbal hops which wasn't too bitter. This beer could tackle a lot of various foods from spicy to mild. Pete's Pili Pili Tiger Prawns caught my eye since I had a great experience having Catfish with Pili Pili Sauce at a long shuttered restaurant called Beaux Tie Grill on 7458 Lankershim in North Hollywood in the late 1980's with a friendly chef who cooked great Caribbean meals. A dozen shrimps was strung out along two bamboo skewers & grilled. The grilling was light so that the meat was moist, soft, velvety, almost creamy. Great execution & awareness for not over-cooking. The Pili Pili Sauce is closer to a "dry sauce" with pieces of what looks like tomato, red bell pepper, touch of red chiles which is slathered onto the shrimp as it is grilled. The Pili Pili is slightly acidic to add a gastrique to enliven the shrimp with a touch of a piquant bite. The accompanying rice seems to be cooked in tumeric for an Indian cuisine element, but there seems to be sweet butter infused into the rice for a mellow fragrant butteriness. The mixed green salad with red onions was dressed with a thick, sharp mustard vinaigrette that lent the dish another "hot" spiciness. For a sports bar, the Pili Pili Tiger Prawn dish was arranged in a rather artful manner. The flavours melded well within the separate items themselves as well as complementing each other (the Pili Pili shrimps, mustard vinaigrette salad, rice) as a gestalt. Later the waitress added that I probably ordered the most flavourful South African dish offered at Springbok. I asked about the Biltong, and she said that they rarely have it since the owner makes it only at his whim. I looked disappointed, and to make me feel better about not being able to sample the Biltong, she added, "It's not such a big deal....like American style beef jerky." When I go back, I'll have to order Naidoo's Durban Curry of the Day, Chicken Peri Peri, or Jan Van Riebeeck's Boerewors Roll. Definitely 3+ Yelp stars, and maybe more when I sample the other South African delicacies. read more

Amazing food, great beer, friendly service. This place is an absolute gem which is why I felt the need to leave a review (let's be honest, most of us only leave these when we feel particularly great or terrible about our experience somewhere). Classic sports bar atmosphere, so if you're completely turned off by that well then, you're missing out. Because the food is amazing. We had the calamari and samosas. The calamari were perfectly cooked and tender, nicely greasy how I like it :P. The samosas were some of the best I've ever had. Curried beef and potato. The outside skin was super crispy/spring roll style like a Burmese samosas (far superior to an Indian style samosa where the skin is more soft/flakey like in my opinion). Beer was crisp and fresh (Stella). I'll be coming here for all of my future NFL game watching experiences. I've never been to a sports bar in LA that had such great, unique food. read more

It's lamb, luscious, tender and delicious. Served atop yellow rice with a wheat roll, fresh, diced tomatoes and shredded coconut. I really do have to branch out, but this curry is just THAT good! Today, I brought two colleagues here, and they were equally impressed with their food selections. One had the Guinness Stew ($12) and, unexpectedly, finished all of it. This comes with a spring mix salad with the house dressing, a pleasant mustardy blend. The other had the buffalo wing quesadillas ($8). Pretty presentation, stacked. She also devoured all of it and said it was tasty and a tad spicy, but not too spicy. She had requested the sauce on the side. Haven't been here to drink...yet. Always here on a work day. Seems like a fun place for game days, trivia nights (Tuesdays) and people watching. Only one star off for service that's friendly, but a tad too slow. read more

I don't live in the Valley, I actually live far from the valley but hey, we all have our favorites. This is a neighborhood type of bar that has a relaxed atmosphere. You see a lot of locals hang in here and boy they are not uptight. Love the people who works here as well. It was never a hit or miss. Me and my girlfriend would hang out here usually on a weekday just to have a few drinks; when guys would join our table, the server would approach us and asked if the guys were bothering us in a very non stick-up-your-ass way. The guys who would join us or talk to us are really nice and its just their way of making you feel welcome and not creepy at all. This was not a one time incident too. I wanted some good grub & drinks so my friend suggested we'd come here, it was close to 10:30pm so I called to see if the kitchen was still open since 3 previous places I called the grill was closed already. First impression was wow it's crowded for a Monday night ( Karaoke Beware) Second impression was the staff is really friendly and outgoing Third impression everyone person that passed my table smiled at me.. guy & girl.
