Best secret spot in the Valley. Wow. Their food is delicious and fresh. You have to try the fish and chips. Holy smokes, even the tartar sauce was great. If you're lucky and it's on the special, get the tomato parmesan soup of the day that's served with a perfectly toasted slice of sourdough baguette with butter. Great spot for food and drinks I've been to in awhile! They have a lot of tvs for sports and drink specials daily! Pool table and patio as well. My biggest complement, was the food!!! I got the filet mignon sandwich which was huge! I posted a pic. Got a salad instead of fries. If you do sub out for the salad make sure to tell them what dressing you want or it's honey mustard, but I digress. It was a great sandwich and maybe $14 or so. I took more than half of it home lol My friend got the brisket sandwich which was AMAZING!!! Omg!!! Highly recommend it!!! She took more than half home as well. Fantastic flavor!!! They a very diverse menu!!! I think the owners are from Australia? I used to frequent Springbok from 2004-2008....(had a SA boyfriend/soccer fan)...we went there for the Euro2020 semi final game on Wednesday & the final game this past Sunday. Nothing's changed, same decor, lots of tv screens, same menu, same "barely ok" food. I noticed their kitchen is an "open door" w/everyone walking in & out, having personal conversations with several waitresses/their hair down, a few "family members?" running around, hair down, in & out of the kitchen, no aprons, no gloves on the cooks, some guy was on his phone outside yelling, then I see he's a cook? No apron, no gloves, no hat, one of the cooks has a shaved head, but a big bushy beard, not covered, yuck It's like a "free for all," anything goes....2-3 waitresses came to take our order, don't they have assigned tables? The fish tacos were a huge disappointment, the salsa is unbearably spicy, being served on 3 small corn tortillas, that's it? The tuna melt was horrible. Period. They actually toast the bread separately, melt the cheese on the tuna, then just slap it together! The bread doesn't even stick to the melted cheese!! Geez-what a huge disappointment!! The fries were good, how can you ruin frozen, premade fries? (By serving them under done when we asked they be "well done!" Soooo, you don't go to Springbok for the great food, the nice furniture, nor the dirty, unkempt bathrooms....you go for the fun atmosphere when Italy & England are duking it out on the pitch!! To the owner: give all your cooks aprons, hats, gloves & uniforms! Make that bearded cook wear a beard cover!! Tell all the girls to wear their hair up, wear sensible shoes that cover their feet, & to actually come back a few minutes after the food is served, just in case customers need, oh some dressing, ketchup, napkins, a refill? Get some "bus boxes," so the tables can be cleared more quickly & efficiently, your servers are going to end up with tendonitis! My pool group and I ate here the other day and loved it. Chantal was our server and she was phenomenal. Not only did she take care of our group of around 15, she looked as if she was covering the entire restaurant. Kudos to the chef as well to how speedy everything came out. I ordered the lamb curry. It was wonderful. Not too gamey and the perfect amount of spice. I liked the sugared coconut on the side as well. The bread roll was also light and fluffy. That's a rare treat. My mom ordered the boerewors. I'm very picky about sausages and this was fantastic. Again, the bread with the boerewors was perfect. I'm definitely coming back to try more on the menu. read more

I've never been to this place before, first time experience was amazing, we sat at the bar and Chantel took such great care of us. She served us this Sangria that was FANTASTIC, literally will be here every possible weekend to grab one. This girl can make a drink, I've had Washington apples at many bars, but she just nailed it. This was a lot more sports bar than I really expected, but I still liked it just the same. 4 years ago I spent a month in Southern Africa and was really craving springbok shots, the ones with amurula (which I totally butchered the spelling). I only tried this place a few weeks ago for the first time after living near by for years. I was so surprised by how nice the waitress was and how great the food was. I've been back again since the first time and had another great meal. I do think that you should keep in mind that the vibe here is very much a bar. Both times we went the music from the bar was really loud and the crowd "lively." But that's the old guy in me coming out. Frankly, the burger was delicious, the drinks great, the waitress fun and funny, and their appetizers were incredible. I can't wait to go back again. read more

I'm moving to this neighborhood and wanted to check out my new local drinking hole. I am very relieved and happy to find a place with a great happy hour, a friendly and fast straight-shooting bartendress, and a solid Bloody Mary. Plenty of nice outdoor seating with misters to cool down the hot late summer afternoon (technically it's Fall now but Mother Nature didn't get the memo in Cali). There's live entertainment and dining on one side, dining in the middle and pool and darts on the e end. They have a dood outdoor patio with seating. Tons of tv's for games and lots of sports fans on game nights. They're big on rugby too. The bartenders learn your name and drink by your 2nD or 3rd visit. We came here one Friday eve and it wasn't too crowded when we arrive, we were seated fairly quickly. However, within a half hour, the places was hoppin' and poppin. The covered patio was a bit quieter than inside, yet, it was nonetheless a bit noisy to hold any kind of private conversation because the patio is tightly jammed with tables and chairs. A large party was seated at the far end of the patio, but were quite boisterous. Clearly, our server was a bit rattled and overwhelmed with the number of tables she was assigned. It took about 15 minutes for her to greet us, another 20 to deliver our drinks. Fortunately, we made use of the downtime and were able to order food and drink at the same time, which resulted in our food coming out about five minutes after our drinks. I ordered: Chicken Sosaties-Grilled on skewers coated in our slightly spicy apricot marinade, served on a bed of rice. Beer snob ordered: Chicken Peri-Peri- A large boneless breast coated in our homemade peri-peri sauce and grilled to perfection, served sliced over Springbok Fries with a side salad. I've lived down the street from springbok for years and I've been there a few times to grab a beer. This past Saturday after a fun day of riding bikes at balboa park, my boyfriend and I stopped by for water/soda and a sandwich to hold us over until dinner. The waitress was nice and friendly but seemed a bit distracted. She took our drink orders and food order(club sandwich to share). While we waited we played our usually game of UNO and relaxed. We played 2 long games of UNO and realized it shouldn't take 36 minutes for a sandwich and fries. The place wasn't busy so this should not have been the case. I walked inside and approached our waitress and asked about the ETA of the sandwich. She had a huge " Oh Shit" look on her face, so I asked if it was even rang in..... guess what??? It wasn't! This place is interesting. Let's get that out of the way. Quite a mix of people, of food, of music, and of energy. At first, we were super frustrated with the lack of anyone helping us to be seated. The hostess stand was abandoned. Apparently, the hostess wasn't in that night and the two servers and manager were slammed trying to handle everything. Rocky, the manager, was so very kind and helpful. He asked my name and said that if anything opened up, he'd find me and that he'd put the Kings game on whatever tv was nearest the table he found. As i'm waiting at the bar, trying to get drinks from the equally slammed bartenders, Rocky comes over and found us a primo table in front of a few TVs. After a while of no server coming over, he takes our order, too! At one point he even ordered more drinks for us, as the servers weren't all that attentive. One of the servers eventually started working with us, as things got less insane. We enjoyed the wings (especially the Peri Peri wings) and the Chicken Livers in Peri Peri sauce. The spice and flavor is on point! We did, however, ignore the sketch-looking 'salad' and roll that came with the livers. They show tons of sports and apparently also show the UFC fights. Springbok is the place that makes me PROUD to live in Van Nuys! (There, I've said it for all the world to hear!) I don't believe sports bars like this still exist in Hollywood, LA proper, downtown, and certainly not in hipster-land West Hollywood, or snooty Beverly Hills. Maybe, just maybe, there's a similar joint in the Echo Park area, or on the West side (IF they're lucky!) What's so great about Springbok that I'm kicking myself for not discovering this gem earlier, having lived in Van Nuys for about 10 years? The short answer is that Springbok is LA county's version of "Cheers" -- a bona-fide local's favorite, "where everybody knows your name", and there's something for everyone: - The Springbok is a bar & grill, with excellent "South-African fusion" bar food. Every dish I've tried here is superb: excellent soups, fresh salads, great burgers, ribs so tender the meat falls off the bone, appetizer tacos, fish & steak, South African curry, etc. Their samosas alone deserve special mention! If that weren't enough, on the weekends Springbok features delicious late-night beef gyros grilled on the patio, at $5 for a succulent plate of meat, when all other restaurants in the area are long closed. - Housed in a sprawling property, there's a large bar area with pool table, darts, and a state of the art modern jukebox, a huge dining area, AND a breezy, dog-friendly outdoor patio. - This joint is open all day, and often way into the wee hours of the morning. It is a great option for an off-hour meal, or getting your groove on without leaving the area on the weekends (Springbok has a dj on Friday & Saturday nights). They even have a bingo night, which I've yet to try, and karaoke on Thursday & Sunday nights! - Springbok is FAMILY FRIENDLY until 11pm, because it is technically a restaurant! Yes, folks, you can bring your tykes out with you while you have a beer and catch a game! My friend brought his 12-year-old son out one Sunday night, and the kid was thrilled to have his karaoke-cherry popped, to a full house of adults -- he says it was his best night ever, so far! - The Springbok draws a motley crowd of various ages, professions, ethnicities and walks of life, reflecting the under-appreciated diversity of Van Nuys. There are sports fans, office professionals, hipsters, seniors, foreigners and locals alike, all for the most part friendly and down to Earth, rubbing shoulders during packed sports games, bingo, or karaoke events. Of course, this wouldn't be a balanced review, if I didn't include some (minor) issues with my favorite local haunt: - The Springbok waitresses (all good looking, young, and sporty) can be inconsistent in terms of friendliness. Sometimes they're nice, other times totally aloof. However, friendly or not, the waitresses are always professional (if you're able to flag one down during peak hours). - The numerous huge television screens sometimes blare commercials during games. Generally speaking, it can get loud at the Springbok. But there's a trick to dealing with the noise levels here: if the sound of games on TV becomes too obnoxious, it is usually possible to turn the game volume off by playing a song on the jukebox. This does require a small monetary investment, but is worth it if you want to hear something other than sports commentators rambling on. - It can get packed during big games, especially football or basketball! I've walked in to a sea of people, many of them forced to stand shoulder-to-shoulder, all watching the TV screens transfixed. My recommendation: avoid the Springbok during Superbowl. But, despite these small imperfections, I'm a huge fan -- rock on, 'Bok! read more

They show UFC fights, score! I've drove past Springbok many times but have never had an urge to pop in and see what it was about. We called the night of the UFC 168 (poor Silva) and they were prompt to say "$5 at the door for the UFC fight". We scrambled to get there in a hurry and showed up around 6PM. The place was BEYOND packed already, not to mention there were a handful of people that were "saving" tables on tables while the rest of their party was MIA, grrr. We stood awkwardly inside staring up at the TV, at some point they were cleaning fold out chairs and I was able to swoop up two. My suggestion? Found this place on Yelp while looking for a place that was showing the recent UFC fight. They charge $5/a person to get in during UFC days. When we walked in, there was not a seat open in the restaurant or bar area. Luckily, we found a few spots outside in the back (or front). There was no shortage of tv's at this place. Obviously, on this night, the focus was on the UFC fight, but they had 1 or 2 tv's showing the Spurs vs. Grizzles NBA playoff game. While watching the fight, our party of 4 all ordered the same Kobe burger. The fries and salad that came with it were pretty darn good, but the burger itself left much to be desired. There wasn't any flavor to it. Needless to say, I was left unsatisfied, as far as my burger craving goes. The atmosphere was unreal, it has everything that you would want in a restaurant/pub. It has delicious food for everyone, with a lovely patio. It is large yet quaint. For after hours there is a pool table, darts & a pub feeling, overall a nice bar! We were greeted by the owner & the service gave us a home town feel. Came here on a date recently and I really wouldn't recommend this place for a first date fellas...just an FYI. Unless it's during the daytime when the weather is nice and then you can sit on the patio - that would be the better way to go. This is more of a local hang out for the neighborhood folks. It's a good place to watch a fight or game as they have a nice outdoor patio with flat screens and a BBQ grill. The owners will personally make and serve your food during special events. They are very nice and family oriented folks. I would have given four stars but it's obvious that the waitresses here were not hired for their skillset in the food service/hospitality industry - very cute but VERYYYY slow with a touch of attitude on top. I did not have a full dinner - just a beer and some appetizers so I couldn't really comment on the rest of their menu. The calamari was undercooked and served with a nasty, heavy, mayonnaise based dipping sauce. Their potato skins were overcooked and hard. Not too sure I will come back here. read more

Nothing special- I was really expecting more. We came in for a quick brew & brunch. I got their standard house burger and asked for bbq sauce as the menu offered. Our waitress said that the cooks don't know how to put it on the burger so she brought it on the side. The burger was very plain and dry. The meat was cooked fine but still not much flavor. Even with all the toppings on the burger it still tasted like paper. It was so sloppily put together that it fell apart from my first bite. I see that their menu offers a lot of diversity. They definitely don't offer good American food so I'd warn you all- don't get a burger. The waitress took 15 minutes to bring me a refill on my drink though it sat there- empty at the edge of the table all sad- the whole time. The waitress also dropped some food off of my plate while carrying it a few feet from the kitchen- that she also blamed the cooks for. Lousy Service from the waitstaff here. Once you walk in you see the bar right away but when you make that right turn than a small light left you plentiful seating to where you please. The place is kept up nicely. Wait staff is always so nice and attentive. If you read my reviews you know I'm about consistancy and customer service and of course flavorful food!!. This place has it for you!!!!. If you just wanna chill at the bar and play pool BOOM they got you. You want to just grab a bite with the fam BOOM they got you too. It's crazy. It's a family/bar/just come and hang out vibes.
