I was really disappointed with my main entree during this trip. I got the lobster ravioli and it was like...appetizer sized! And not that great. I mean I think there was a total of 5 tiny raviolis. The nice waiter did offer 2 complimentary limencello shots, which I was happy about. Still didn't take away from the fact that I was still hungry though. My husband got the pepperoni pizza and he said it was just okay. Nothing special. My favorite thing was the burrata, but again, a very small appetizer portion. It came with 2 pieces of crostini type toast. Literally 2 pieces for an entire ball of burrata. Made no sense to me. However, it was delicious. It was overall a disappointment, which really stinks because I've been here before and loved it. The drinks are the best thing about this place (and it's cute). Wonderful experience from service to food at Scarpino. The owner made some recommendations, and it's a small menu of Italian classics, so it was easy to choose what to order. We started off with the arancini and fried zucchini, both delicious and easy to share with a larger group. My friend and I ordered the margarita pizza and the chicken Parmesan to share, and we left with half the pizza and the side pasta as leftovers. The portion were very generous, and the food was fabulous. The chicken Parmesan was served with arugula on top, which was a welcome twist from the classic, and the pizza dough was one of the best I've ever had. And the side pasta-omg. It was definitely made fresh in house. Not sure I'll be able to eat the stuff in the grocery stores anymore. The cocktails are great here. I ordered the lavender sangria and tried several others, and the owner brought us a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate our friend's birthday. I went to this restaurant for a friends birthday dinner, it wad...lack luster. I liked my drinks, Apperal spritz never does me wrong. I did order the Burrata and that was good. We came during restaurant week and tried that menu. I got the Caesar salad, chicken Piccata, and cheesecake. The Caesar salad was SO SALTY, and the rest of my party agreed it was egregiously salty. Our entrees came, my chicken piccata was again, SO SALTY. The chicken was decent, but the risotto was very salty. The dessert came...my cheesecake was still frozen - it wasn't bad, it wasn't good. Although the food is not bad the terrible service and lack of response from the manager made this a disappointing experience. We attended an event at the convention center and Scarpino is located conveniently across the street. We called ahead & 11 of us arrived looking for a quick meal of pizza & beers. We waited 20 minutes for our first drinks, then placed our dinner orders. Pizza (delicious) & salads -nothing complicated and yet we sat for 2 hours. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and then a 2nd. Guess what ? They ran out of my wine & sent a glass of some other white without mentioning it & hoping I wouldn't notice. Gosh I hate that .... Then we ordered dessert - cannolis & gelato - it took 25 minutes. Mind you there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. 3 of us asked 3 different people about where was our dessert and no one could figure it out. When I finally spoke to the manager - she said she would have to research what happened & get back to us ! ‍‍ I'm still waiting. Strange for an Italian restaurant. Was dry and tasteless. Had to ask for additional marsala sauce, not very good. Salads were unremarkable and bland. Meatball was stone cold; had to return it twice. They also don't know how to make beans and greens. Was bland and lame. Chicken parm was decent, but pasta was luke warm. Server was good and apologetic. Get they may be short staffed. Everyone is. The most constructive review I can provide is a 2 star rating. Environment is about a 4. Nice place. Building and location are awesome. Sort of a gold mine in terms of where it's placed and the ambiance is nice. Our service was ok. Nice people but not too attentive, and not overly welcoming. The food was sub par. 6 of us all ordered different items, none of which were memorable. The drinks were also not great. Most ordered menu cocktails, which were local bar level. I personally ordered an old fashioned, and it was one of the worst I've had. Would I go back? Maybe. But only because of location and availability. I am sorry but I didnt like the food, my chicken parmigiana came with bone!! It is unbelievable, the chicken was very dry the plate looked horrible! The sweet potato gnocchi was very spicy with many jalapeños, even though the menu didn't said that the plate is spicy! The meat ball only brought small pieces of bread and the sauce was also very spicy and the menu didn't said it was spicy. The prices are vey high. The place is nice and has a great atmosphere, but the food is nothing special. It's overpriced for what it is and what you get. The service was fine, but overall did not feel like the place lived up to the hype. I have gone here twice and I also booked a reservation for graduation. They restaurant had called me on several occasions to pre-order my order. While I understand they might be busy on graduation weekend, I didn't appreciate being forced to pre-order when I had an existing reservation. I'd like to enjoy my own graduation dinner. As this is the first review and it's COVID season, we will be lenient and say it's an A-OK location and an improvement from Ten Penny, which stood there before. Went during Winter Restaurant Week so this is also an abnormality. Personal notes: I'm glad there's another Italian place downtown, even if it brands itself as a pizzeria. The restaurant is in line with the AmpD group portfolio, which to some will be good, to some will be - ok, got it. I'll probably be back for happy hours after work, but out with friends I'll probably opt for a different location. Setting: Minimalistic, all social distancing requirements in place, clean, and comfortable. There is not much change in the layout or the style from the previous establishment (which was semi-industrialist minimalist also). Sips: The wine list in location was different than the wine list provided online, including the prices. While I'm not penny-pinching, those who are looking for a glass option for less than $10 (even if it's only $9) will be disappointed; also, it's a bit misleading to not note online that there is a chance the selection will be different. Snacks (Dinner here): As noted, this was a winter restaurant week menu (which was definitely a deal for the selection) A few issues: First, our party all got there at 7:45 and ordered before 8; the first course took 30 minutes to get to us. (Salad and Pulled Mozzarella) The salad was pretty much rabbit food (practically no dressing and pieces were not sliced down enough). And I don't know how.... but the Mozzarella (some of the 4 pieces, not all) tasted like Fish. There's not even fish on the menu, so someone explain that to me, please. The pasta and the main chicken dish were absolutely fine. This is my taste palate so I'm all good, but there was a LOT of pepper on the Cacio Pepe pasta. (as I said - I'm fine, but a Pittsburgh might have a shock). For the Pasquale Parmigiana, you will get the whole chicken or two even for your money. It's at least three normal portions. But I thought it was quite tasty. Service: I believe they were just understaffed - and they knew it; I understand COVID is difficult and you are making due. The waitress, host, and maitre were friendly and doing their absolute best to get us everything as fast as possible and they kept pouring wine generously, so thank you for accommodating us. We had reservations elsewhere and had to make a last minute change to add more to our party. I will give them a star for the flexibility to accommodate a large party at the last minute. I will give them another star for trying to find us a wine we liked (without success) and a third star for the complimentary limoncello. But the food was, meh. We had several appetizers. The zucchini fritters were all batter and no zucchini. The rest were average at best except for the arancini which were quite good. Our entrees were large and plentiful. No one finished their plate and a couple even shared an entre and didn't finish. However, the chicken parm was just OK and the cacio pepe was bland. We were warned that you must like pepper to enjoy the dish, but I could barely taste the pepper. For dessert we had -- no idea if they even serve dessert. None was offered and we saw none on the menu. If you have a large group or need a place close to the convention center, this will do. It won't wow you, but it will fill you up. The selection at the bar and the drinks made by the bartender were pretty good. The wine selection is limited both by the glass and bottles. Given the competition for Italian food in the city, I expected more. I've had better Italian food for a similar price nearby (and worse for that matter), so I'm not going to rush back here but I'd eat here again in a pinch. read more

We were staying at the Westin so very convenient location for us. No reservation but we were a party of two and were able to get full service. My husband is a Manhattan lover and raved about his drink. Servers were attentive and efficient. The olive appetizer was a hit and very unique. My friend made a reservation for Scarpino through Resy last week. Upon entering, the hostess could not find the reservation even though we had confirmation of it. No one's fault per say, they got us a table but got us off to a bit of a shaky start. It took 10ish minutes for our server to come and greet us. We were ready to order drinks promptly but she immediately turned away before we had a chance and said "I'll give you a minute." After finally ordering, the drinks themselves took a hot minute to come out. (Also didn't find out until the end that I was paying $16 for a tiny glass of wine. We weren't given a wine menu.) We ordered burrata which was about 3 finger widths wide with 2 tiny pieces of toast. Fine, but for a table of 5 people not enough to share. Bread was OK, the herb butter they served was freezing cold and difficult to spread. I got the fusilli and it was good, probably the best tasting meal at the table. Temperature wise everyone's food was lukewarm at best- one dish being outright cold- but we didn't see our server for another while and we were starving so just ate it. (Highly recommend against the prosciutto pizza.) At the end our server came over and offered to do separate checks, which we appreciated. 10 minutes later a different server comes around and explains the system is broken and they can't do it anymore. Which is OK, but then we realized the table of girls behind us just got separate checks. It was just kind of weird. Anyway it wasn't horrible but disappointing experience. This place is absolutely amazing. The service is perfect and attentive. I love Italian food and honestly can say this is some of the best I have had. My wife and I had the arancini (perfect as good if not better than Eataly in Chicago) . We hared the chicken parm (huge portion) and the Cacio Pepe. By far my favorite of the night was the Cacio Pepe. This is a simple dish, but so difficult to execute. Scarpino does what few places can, make a perfect dish. This truly is a wonderful plate. I came here with a small group on a Saturday night - we did have a reservation, but it wasn't overly crowded so you could probably snag a table if you went early enough. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We ordered a few apps, the hand pulled mozzarella and fried zucchini. To be honest, I thought the bread with the mozzarella was a little underwhelming, but it was fine. I ordered the veal short rib pappardelle - it was delicious. Cannot figure out why this place was not more crowded. We had an excellent experience. Food was delicious and came out quickly. Drinks were delicious as well. We started with calamari that was cooked perfectly with a yummy marinara. I had seared scallops that were cooked to perfection. My husband had a pizza that was delicious! They then charged the dinner prices on lunch items and when it was brought up suddenly there was a gratuity added of 42 dollars. Yes we were a large party however the inconsistency was out of spite as the original bill had no gratuity included and we had already tipped. We also had to serve ourselves the food that was left in the tantrum. multiple tables around us also left without even eating due to the wait. I've been to Scarpino twice so far and the first time was pretty decent, but the second visit was a bit disappointing. The space inside and outside are gorgeous and are a welcome addition to downtown Pittsburgh - I love the outdoor dining options they have set up around the perimeter of the restaurant. During the first visit, we shared the arancini which was excellent. I opted for the chicken parmesan which comes with a side of spaghetti - the chicken parm was huge and easily made for 3 meals, the spaghetti definitely had a homemade flair to it and was perfectly al dente, however the sauce on the spaghetti and chicken parm was under-seasoned. Ok no big deal, the chicken stayed crispy and the drinks made up for it. They have an espresso martini that's not on the menu (for some reason) but it's absolutely one of the best in the city - I believe they add Baileys to it which I haven't seen most other places do! The second visit was a bit of a letdown, unfortunately. We went as a group of 5 and were seated outside on a beautiful evening. We started off with the calamari and arancini, both of which came out quickly. The calamari however had a rubbery/sticky consistency to it and were no bigger than the size of a nickle. There was also a lot of fried batter bits with no calamari in them that were plated up as well which left a pool of grease at the bottom of the bowl. The arancini was flavorful, but super tiny - I definitely remember them being larger during the first visit. I think the biggest letdown of this evening was the pizza. I went for a soppressata pizza and the amount of cheese was comically piled on, the layer of melty cheese was thicker than the actual crust. It was too much, even for someone who LOVES cheese. It was impossible to take a bite or cut a piece without the entire slab of cheese sliding off as there was no cheese lock onto the crust. Moving onto the crust - it was far too sweet to be considered pizza dough. I understand that pizza dough requires some amount of sugar/honey to activate the yeast, but the pizza crusts made that day were dense and had no rise, reminiscent of dead yeast, and extremely sweet. I had to stop eating a few times, and I'm not sure if it was because of the over-the-top serving of cheese or the super super sweet crust. On the bright side, the ambiance and service was excellent, and the others in our group definitely enjoyed their pastas. Would I personally go back? Probably, mainly to see if the pizza I received that one day was a fluke. read more

We had reservations for two on a Friday evening during Pittsburgh's Summer Restaurant Week. We were seated at a high top with the least comfortable seats ever. We ordered drinks which took an exceedingly long time to arrive. While sitting there, a man, presumably the chef, stopped at our table, without introducing himself, to tell us how amazing the menu was. A manager (maybe?) also stopped at our table, without introducing himself, and briskly asked how we were. He left before we could respond. Fast forward 75 minutes and we have yet to receive our appetizers from the prix fixe menu. (In fact, one of the three appetizer choices was already "sold out" at 6:30 pm on a Friday.) My fiancé paid for our drinks and we left without eating a bite. We will never return and frankly, I will tell anyone I know to avoid this trainwreck of a restaurant at all costs. read more

Must tries: *The Veal Braised Osso Buco will make your taste buds dance, it is rich and full of flavor. *Zeppole- I LOVE the Zeppole and I never order dessert! These Italian doughnuts are a must try!! Notable mentions: *Pasquale Parmigiana- the portion is huge, it comes with a side of bucatini and is so flavorful and filling. *The Rigatoni is hearty and delicious. Reservations said booth, got there, we were sat at a high top, my wife cannot sit at a high top, I do not prefer to. I asked the hostess for a table at 2 booths that were open in a nice room in the back of the restaurant. I was told those were closed and didn't have service there, even though, these booths were between other booths that were being served and close to kitchen access. (Granted nobody else was sat there while we were there ... but) . So they gave us a nice table in the corner, under an overhead door fan. It blew paper items off our table (the menu) and made it very hard to hear. Food, was less than average, runner brought our salad out after entree arrived. Been twice for dinner and I enjoyed each time. I think food is good, not amazing but the atmosphere would help give this rating a thumbs up. I found the menu to be a little small but they have options for everyone (meat eaters, non meat eaters, veggie lovers, pasta and pizza lovers). One time I sat inside with a massive group and the service was excellent and another we sat outside with another couple which was awesome on a nice evening! I have to add; if you like to dance... go for a late dinner on Saturday night and then head downstairs to the speakeasy ten penny after for some AWESOME music!
