Everything a restaurant should be! On our second visit we were made to feel appreciated and welcomed. Eric our server was incredibly helpful and accommodating with food and wine suggestions throughout. And the menu had so many fantastic choices we appreciated his help. For me the lobster starter is an incredible standout. I could just make a meal out of that. And I am so glad Eric suggested we try the pasta with truffles as an additional course. The pasta was cooked to perfection and the truffles insanely flavorful and the kitchen was kind enough to split the pasta course for us. The mains included the Spruce spin on miso cod which was over the top perfect and pared with a fantastic white wine while my friend was delighted with his duck pared with a wonderful pinot. The cheese course was wonderful and then we had to have the beignets and this was pared with a Madera that Eric allowed us to share. We had the very best family dinner here last Saturday. We lucked out and got the library/patio area seating, for our party or 5 at 5pm. The service was amazing! The meal is designed as a prix fixe series of 3 dishes. You can pick each of your individual dishes from the menu. I don't do any research ahead of time, and didn't really need to as it was all excellent. You might want to plan ahead of time. They brought the amazing Parker House Rolls to start. I then had the Rock Cod Crudo which was to die for. So delicate and tasty! Next I had the grilled Black Cod with broccollini which I really loved as well. The wines they suggested were excellent, two Zine's: a Turley, and a Hartford. Their wine person picked super well for us. My last dish was the Beignets. They were super light and warm, excellent. I was a bit disappointed in the dark chocolate dipping sauce. It wasn't as good as I had in Montreal, needed to be a little more bitter for my taste. read more

The food was unique and delicious, and it's obvious that the restaurant put in a lot of thought into the menu. The service was amazing too, our server was very nice and he constantly checked in with us throughout the meal. Spruce is the kind of mainstay in San Francisco that hasn't gone out of style. You know exactly what to expect but the food and service is never boring or tacky. I made an impromptu reservation on a Wednesday night for my birthday. We were really well taken care of. All the food was delicious. Amuse was a savory cannoli and a cheese puff. The cannoli was dense but not heavy; the cheese puff was airy and delicious. The dining room serves a 3-course tasting menu for $125, with optional add-ons and enhancements. We got one of the specials - freshly shaved truffles over home-made egg noodles in parmesan sauce - to share after the first course. This was $40 additional. For appetizer, I chose the amberjack crudo and hubby got the stone fruit salad with prosciutto and burrata. It's summer so there was ample use of melon, which was delightful. For entree, I chose the lamb and hubby chose the peppercorn-crusted duck breast. Both were amazing. For dessert, they brought out a banana ice cream cake that I was not expecting. It was pretty good considering I do not like banana. I also had the lemon verbana granita and hubby had the chocolate tarte. Our server was wonderful and checked with us often. We have the luxury of working right next door to Spruce, so when our boss asked where we would love to have our post holiday company lunch it was a no brainer to choose this restaurant. Upscale, fine dining with personable service from all the staff. Thank you to all who came to our table especially our main server Parker for taking such good care of us during our visit - we had reservations at 11:45am and finished up by 2:15pm. We chose from the two course lunch menu and were told about the extensive wine/spirits list as well as the special truffle pasta but we didn't partake in it. We enjoyed the potato chowder, quince and radicchio salad, celery root triangoli as starters and for entrees we chose the filet mignon, duck leg confit, and scallops. All were delicious and cooked perfectly. On learning that we were neighbors the management and pastry chefs banded together to surprise us with several desserts - beignets with sauces, a citrus spiked chocolate tartlet, chocolate chip cookies with cream, and some chocolate chestnut bonbons. We had dinner for my best friends birthday here last night and let me just say this was one of the best dinners I've ever had. Our server Robin was a GEM the entire time and we all had the best things to say about her. Robin really made the evening so special and I hope when we come back we can see her again! It's so fancy in here but I felt fine in jeans and a nice top, there were some more casual diners and some more dressed up. The food! Was! AMAZING! I wish I had more of that brioche bread because I have not stopped thinking about it for almost 24 hours. The truffle pasta was divine. They grated the truffle right in front of us and I was drooling the whole time. The stone fruit salad was incredible, all the flavors together burst in my mouth. I loved it! So glad they have gotten rid of the outdoor seating which cheapened the experience here! I mean having foie gras outdoors on a foggy night just did not look worth it to me anymore especially since they opened their other restaurants across town! Wow! Came here for anniversary dinner and had an amazing time. The set menu was $125/person which I thought was extremely reasonable and appropriate given the ingredients, presentation, and taste of the food we are provided. While all of plates we received were amazing, I am usually not a ravioli fan but the Celery Root Triagoli blew me away. The black trumpet mushrooms were delightful, but the sauce combined with the triangoli filling is what stole the show. I expected the truffle flavor to over power the dish and other flavors, but they balanced the dish so well that the brown butter and mushroom flavors are what really came through. I got duck breast, and it was cooked really well. Smokey flavor was delicious and really came through. My partner ordered the Hokkaido scallops and boy were those some big scallops. The overall ambiance of the restaurant is very formal and romantic. I really enjoyed the architecture as it didn't feel too modern, or outdated. To those with allergies, the servers, chef, and staff were very accommodating to allergies. they will make substitutions or adjustments to dishes for you. Our server was so knowledgeable about the menu and wines, she made sure we were taken care of during our whole visit. Each course was delicious. Lost one star for food and one star for service. While the experience overall was good, I would not come back here. I think this is a good option if you don't dine at nice restaurants much as it's slightly on the cheaper side (125pp) and so can be a lovely and reasonably priced fancy night out. The food was consistently good but not stellar. I think the most off putting part was that the dishes were not hot. I am not someone who usually cares about this but it felt like most things came lukewarm and could have been so much better. I think there was maybe something going on in the kitchen because the sauce for my steak was clumped as if it had been sitting for a while. The best dish was honestly the apple tatin, really great flavors and texture. Service was mostly strong but there were a couple issues.. One was that it was super slow. Our meal was almost 3 hrs which is insane for a 3 course meal. We waited 40 minutes between dessert and our check. Second issue was that we were not told any specials, which apparently there were quite a lot of. We only found out when we heard a long list of specials given to the table next to us. With no indication on the menu, we wouldn't think to ask. So not sure if it was intentional but it felt a bit like we didn't get a chance to have the full experience. read more

Overall a great experience, although with one off-putting moment (detailed below). I came here with a couple friends for dinner to celebrate a birthday and a graduation. They do not do a la carte for dinner, which instead consists of a $100/person, 3-course dinner (with the option for supplements). The food met expectations for a 1-michelin star restaurant. I ordered: Course 1: Seared Hokkaido Scallops ($12 supplement) Course 2: Pan-Roasted Striped Bass Course 3: Seasonal Strawberry dessert (forgot name) The scallops and the striped bass were very flavorful and well cooked. The dessert was refreshing and beautifully presented. In terms of service, I really appreciated the thought they put into making our dinner special (cards and extra desserts for my friends). However, my one "off-putting" moment of the night was at the start of the visit. I arrived 5 minutes late because of traffic, and when we asked our waiter to go over the menu, he said he had to tend to another table first because of my "weird arrival time". I understand that the team has a set workflow, and if my 5-minute delay really threw off that internal workflow, that's fine. However, I found his comment rude and condescending, even if he did not mean for it to come across that way; there were a million other ways to say that he would get to us soon without having to say that. That being said, I overall thought that Spruce was worth a visit. I would be wary of the supplements, however - they really add up quickly. read more

Unaware of my dinner plans earlier in the day, I was arguably underdressed for the restaurant. However, the service was extremely kind and friendly regardless. It was clear that every dish was meticulously prepared and cared for before reaching the table. My favorites would include the carpaccio, scallops, and beet salad. The duck was also cooked very well. The staff were extremely attentive, getting to know us almost as if they were flight attendants accompanying on a journey. The sommelier was of great help in finding a bottle of dry Riesling that suited our tastes. The cuisine is precise, surgical, in a manner that is impressive but borders on sterile. You will find duck expertly cooked, asparagus perfectly par boiled, all plated meticulously. Plates arrive in synchrony. The decor and ambiance is lush, although you'll still find patrons in casual West Coast style. I'm not a frequent patron of such spots--more of an unfussy diner. Last night, we dined at Spruce to celebrate my fiancé's 30th birthday. Spruce is a high-end restaurant that excels in their service, professionalism, and food presentation. We had to wait about 15 min to get seated but they kindly sat us at this cozy couch and took our cocktails order while we waited. The cocktails were well made and well balanced. After the 15-min wait, we got seated in a very intimate almost semi private room by the fireplace. To start us off, they poured us some champagne and offered us some tasty amuse-bouche. For our prix-fixed menu: My fiancé picked the Nantes carrot fagottini as his appetizer and he absolutely loved it. I had a taste and the pasta was perfectly cooked and the broth was nutty and felt like a warm hug. For my appetizer, I ordered the Kampachi crudo (supplement). It was light, zesty and fresh. You can't go wrong with amberjack, great fish! They also gave us these fluffy house rolls to enjoy with their delicious butter. For his main, my fiancé ordered the dry-aged wagyu ribeye (supplement). It was sensational. The meat was perfectly cooked and the potato rosti was the perfect combo mixed with the bordelaise sauce. I ordered the honey pistachio glazed duck breast and it was my favorite dish of the night. The duck was tender and juicy and the addition of the dug leg crepinette was perfect. During our meals, we had several glasses of their wines. They have an extensive wine list and we ended up trying their Riesling and two of their reds (the Sangiovese and the Nebbiolo). 10/10 For our desserts, we had the apple tatin, the tarte au chocolat, and their beignets (off menu). My favorite was the beignets dipped in their creme anglaise and my fiancé loved his apple tatin. To our surprise, we got a birthday dessert and some extra little treats in a little tower at the end which was such a lovely touch. This meal was probably in my Top 3 of the best meals I've ever had. We were one of many guests celebrating a birthday. Our server Briann was so lovely and the service was great all around. Each dish was perfectly seasoned and executed. The kanpachi crudo was delicate and well balanced. The rib eye cap was super tender paired with the potato rosti (basically the most elevated and delicious hashbrown you'll ever eat ). The duck breast was slightly overcooked but still delicious. We were very satisfied to see that the entrees were generous portions. For dessert, we received a complimentary smores mousse cake which was probably our favorite of all three desserts. It wasn't too sweet and the combination of the smooth mousse and the texture of the nibs was perfect. The beignets were deliciously tender although I would say it it closer to a donut or bomboloni texture- still tasty nonetheless with the creme anglaise. The ambience was ridiculous...freezing cold! And, we waited for over five minutes or more for water and order drinks. My husband actually had to get up and speak with the hostess. When we finally got water, our wine was lukewarm. We did not receive their usual amuse Bouche, just rolls. We both ordered lobster, which was quite good. The duck that we both ordered was minuscule and the side covered with cabbage unappetizing. Do not order the apple panna cotta dessert....horrible! Make sure you order HOT coffee! We have come here many times. This, by far, was our worst experience. We will definitely not be recommending it to others! It will be a long time before we return. I was hit with a $5 surcharge just for ordering my Manhattan "up," and, even more ridiculous, a $6 charge for every Diet Coke refill. We came in yesterday, and what a disappointment. My husband asked to have all of his courses (salad and chicken) served at once, since I only ordered an entrée and we were dining with our two young kids -- we didn't want to prolong the experience. The server said "no problem." Clearly, it was a problem. They brought out everyone else's food except my husband's. When the server finally came over, she said she was "concerned about the timing" (yes, us too). She later returned to say the kitchen was flustered because they couldn't comprehend that we wanted both the salad and chicken served together. By the time his food finally arrived, the rest of us had nearly finished eating. Unacceptable. So the staff was so thrown off by a simple request that they just... didn't bring out his food? Completely incompetent. No wonder you lost a Michelin star. To make matters worse, the server never apologized or tried to make it right. Pretty disappointing for a Michelin star restaurant. The food was ok, service was ok and definitely not worth the price. We came for lunch on a Saturday and were seated at a nice table in the back. They started us off with a coffee cake with cultured butter. The coffee cake felt like something i could get at any old cafe but i did enjoy the butter. They gave us oysters which were good but overly acidic. For our first course we chose the crab toast and the ricotta gnudi. Both were ok and needed extra salt and pepper. For our entrees, we got the braised short ribs with poached eggs, which had no hint of truffle and was way too acidic, and the buckwheat crepe, which was bland. For dessert, we had the beignets and the white chocolate cremux both of which were decent, but nothing special. Now on to the service. There are certain expectations that come with being a michelin star restaurant and this fell way below those expectations. To start, they mixed up our plates when they delivered the starters. When the mains came the server realized he was holding the plates in the wrong hands and had to do some awkward movements to get the plates on the table. Now on to dessert. I wanted coffee to go with it and was surprised they didn't ask us or at least give us a chance to order drinks. About 5 minutes into dessert, we had barely started eating and they were already bringing us a gummy and truffle to finish the meal. It felt like they were rushing us to finish so we quickly ate the dessert and they promptly cleared the table. We must've waited at least 15 minutes just waiting for the check to arrive but nothing. We finally flagged down a random server who was able to help us. Overall, it was a very poor experience filled with mediocre food, bad service, and high prices. I will not be returning. read more

Came to Spruce for Sunday brunch around 11:30 and was the first party to be seated outside. Spruce's decor and facade reminded me of New York Greenwich Village vibes and was a nice little relaxing space in Presidio Heights. Our waiter Miche was an absolute delight. He was kind, patient, explained the menu well, and always checked up on us. We did the brunch pri-fixe (only option) and added on the kaluga caviar service. They started us off with a complimentary glass of champagne and brought out the caviar which was accompanied by butter, crème fraise, shallot, onions, blini, toasted brioche and soft scrambled eggs. Every bite was perfection and I loved the garlicky soft scrambled eggs. For the starters we ordered the fava bean salad and the crab toast. The fava bean salad had thinly sliced king trumpet mushrooms with fava beans and ricotta cheese shredded on top. It was vibrant and fresh. The crab toast was also equally delightful and fresh. For the second course we ordered the pan seared halibut and the red wine braised short ribs. The pan seared halibut was delicious and tender, and the tangy caper sauce was great. Below the sautéed spinach was potato gratin that was a nice surprise and a heartier starch to balance out the dish. Sadly the short ribs I ordered were not my favorite. I felt like the short ribs were quite tough- not fall off the bone, and that the egg AND the grits made the dish feel a little too mushy for my taste. For our third course we got one of each. The strawberry pavlova was definitely the star of the show as it was light, refreshing, and unique. The merengue melted in my mouth and the basil gelato combined with the sweet strawberry mousse was a delight on the tongue. The beignets were also good (a little dense for my liking) and I enjoyed the crème anglaise the most over the chocolate sauce. Overall fantastic experience. In their main dining room they only have a pre fixe menu option, but in the bar area it's first come first served and you can order a la carte. Food: 8/10 - the presentation of all the dishes were beautiful, and the scallop and tuna appetizers were very good. The Wagyu cap cut steak was also good but the flavors weren't as impressive. They have a few dessert items that aren't on the menu but my favorite was definitely the chocolate chip cookie! Service: 10/10 - all of the staff was incredibly attentive. We love Spruce, whether it is to sit in the dining room or to sit at the bar. We highly recommend the bar seating because you can get most of what's available in the dining room à la cart. And you can get the bar menu hamburger and the pastrami sandwich which are both to die for. Ultimately what we come here for is the delicious beignets. They serve for dessert with the side of melted chocolate, and crème anglaise. They are so good! It is a price for dinner, but it's worth the cost so a great spot for a special occasion.
