The fish was good, fries ok, tartar and cajun meh. Service okay. The cook was by himself and sweaty. I understood the wait. There is certainly something that has a strong vinegar aftertaste but its not the fish batter since I picked it apart. The mystery oil used for frying the fish and chips flavored everything. The tartar sauce, which costs extra, consisted of sour, cheap commercial mayonnaise with a few bits of chopped sour pickle in it If you love fresh well prepared fish and chips, and good food in general, avoid Spud Fish & Chips. I am really only giving this two stars because the staff was nice, the place seemed pretty clean, and my food was prepped in a timely manner....and now I know why....they just microwave everything. I ordered a clam chowder and a clam strips and chips. Literally everything was out of a bag it seems. I don't even think they fried the clam strips in house. The fries were a bit chewy (que?) and the biggest failure was the chowder. Have you had Campbell's clam chowder in a can? Good. Then you know what this tastes like. No substance whatsoever. So my friend and I went in this morning before going to Kingston. We were greeted by what seemed like zombie like attitudes. "Monotone" "Hellowelcometospuds" our knee jerk reaction was to turn and run but we were hungry so we "FOOLISHLY" stayed. For a 2 piece thin (1/4in) x 4in pieces of fish and a shrimp cocktail NO drink mind you, it was $18.36! I realized before he rang me up that I had to pay for ANY tartar that I might want. Nothing free here but the zombie like stares that the pitiful staff that seem to have slept there, and as they wander around back looking for some kind of flesh to devour. Yuck, yuck and yuck. Tasteless cod, mediocre fries and some weird flavor of Diet Dr. Pepper emanating from the fountain. The place is way too sterile and not one comfortable sitting apparatus in sight. The benches are cushion-less Melamine with seams conveniently placed under your butt crack at the tables. Hard metal chairs both low and high complete your seating ensemble. Good thing really as you don't want to stay any longer than you have to. Meal for two was over $30 and one person only had water for their drink. Artificial shake flavors so banana is never a good choice. One lady brought her own bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper so that tells you something about the history of the fountain drinks. Weak plastic knives and forks, tiny little packets of salt and pepper give the place the feel of a cheap carnival set-up. Two fillets of cod were piled onto a large serving of fries on a tiny little cardboard bowl. We had to ask for an empty bowl to make enough room to get to the fries. Don't bother with this place!! My husband and I decided to stop in for lunch after a nice walk along the Edmonds Marina with our newborn. This was our first outing together as a family after a few days being cooped up at home and after a couple of days in the hospital. The outing was completely ruined by who I assume was the manager of Spuds. When we placed our order, we were OFFERED some paper cups to get some water while we were waiting for our order. Great, nice gesture! We posted up toward the back of the restaurant, all the while being compliant- mask wearing customers. We then proceeded to fill our cups with some water that was OFFERED to us by the employee working at the register. We began to drink said water and....HUGE MISTAKE!!! Almost immediately the manager aggressively approached me, and scolded me for not wearing a mask, and condescendingly told me it was state law to comply! My mask was visibly in my hand as was my cup of water. I showed her my mask, and again, was repeatedly scolded. My husband and I were shocked at how stupid the situation was!! We waited a few more minutes for our food, and just wanted to get the heck out of there. Then, the manager personally brought our food to us. Did we get an apology, since clearly I wasn't doing anything wrong or "illegal".... maybe she realized the need to temporarily remove my mask, to drink from my cup? No!! She served up another round of insults, explaining that I need to understand the severity of Covid, my non-compliance with the masks, and that their business had received a lot of bad reviews recently, was struggling to make it, and had been fined several times at the $10,000.00 price point, essentially because of non-mask wearing people like me!! Unreal!! Needless to say, we quickly grabbed our stuff and retreated back to our car. Thanks for the uncalled for altercation, especially targeted toward the lady with the newborn baby. Went to the Edmonds location yesterday 6/24/2020. The Cod and Chips were ok, but the clam chowder was like a white sauce with a clam or two and a couple pieces of potato. NO FLAVOR AT ALL!! We won't be back anytime soon. Over priced for what you get. read more

I stopped by for lunch and was very happy that I did. I ordered just a single cod chips w/ a slaw cup. The Fish was cooked perfectly with a golden crisp outside and a thick white fish on the inside. I felt the fries were cooked perfect with a little crisp. I topped my meal with the garlic vinegar which is delicious if you like vinegar. Thought about walking down to the beach but I decided to sit on their outdoor patio. I left full just from the single order but wanting more because the flavors were great. I don't like to give bad reviews, but they charged you for tartar sauce (a first for me) and you really needed it because the fish was overcooked/dry. Worst fish and chips I've ever had. Comments about tartar sauce tasting spoiled is true. We got oysters and their cod. The oyster tasted like it'd gone bad, it's mostly dough and batter, and undercooked batter at that. I think you can imagine for yourself how good that it is for deep fried oysters. The fish was, like other comments, dry and thin. Tastes old. As I type this me and my wife both have upset stomachs. Color me surprised. The clam chowder also tasted generic, and like it was made from a formula or mix of some kind. I would steer clear of this place until they show they can deliver a passable fish and chips experience. Sometimes I'm guilty of posting reviews before I let my emotions (yes I do have them even if my wife claims I don't) calm down and maybe those said emotions can influence my review a star or two. I stopped by Spuds on Sunday at a weird time. Like 4pm or something so I was after the lunch crowd and before the dinner crowd. The place was pretty empty. I noticed that the owner was the only one behind the counter. I know this because she had made contact with me on my previous review. I ordered a double fish and this time I backed it with a prawns only. She brought me my fish rather quickly and I mentioned that I should have prawns coming also... and she realized that she had forgot about those. She went back and cooked them up for me while I enjoyed my fish. She brought me my prawns and then proceeded to give me some credit on my next visit since she forgot about them. I told her that this was completely unnecessary since it was only a small delay and I wasn't even finished with my fish. She insisted. My point here is that she really followed through on her customer service and had no idea who I was and that I had written a less than stellar review from my previous visit. Spud Fish & Chips only by name. I grew up in Seattle and frequented the Greenlake location where there was always a line and seemingly organized chaos. Food is greasy and amazing - the fish fresh and dripping hot from the oil it just came out of. Fries hand cut and also dripping in oil. Yes you pay for your tarter but it's freshly made and worth the extra charge if you're a tarter freak like me. Edmonds location was not busy on the hottest day of the year when no one wants to cook. Ordered a 3 piece fish n chips to share with my daughter and when I picked up the order less than 2 minutes after ordering I immediately knew we were not really at Spud. Fish was neatly stacked on top of dry fries, not a drop of grease, and look of fish could have easily been chicken strips. Breading is not intended for fish, very floury, and flavorless. I'm not considering going back until managers take lessons from existing successful locations. read more

Guess I was expecting it to be like the old one on Green Lake and Alki. Yup, not impressed. and I made a special trip to check it out. I wanted to try the original cod and a piece of halibut. Could not tell them apart and you know how expensive halibut is! Batter was dry, don't know if it was prepared ahead of time and kept under a warmer but that's what it tasted like. The tarter I paid for was literally a pot of mayonnaise (Dicks is better!). And of course the french fries were frozen sticks of wood heated in oil. Nothing to rave about and I was really hoping I had found a decent place for fish and chips (besides my home)! I don't review many places but I was sorta shocked at some of the negative reviews here because my experience was so different...so I thought I'd chime in with my two cents: This isn't some greasy spoon fish & chips. They obviously take care to change and filter their oil often and the result is a light, moist, fish with no unwanted flavors introduced. I think it is some of the best around. I've heard (or read - can't remember which right now) that all of their food is locally sourced and I found the space to be open and airy. All in all, and I've had a pretty nice experience both times I've been there. I agree that it isn't the cheapest lunch out there...but I think their prices are pretty much in line with other fish & chips places I've been to, and I think real/quality food should cost more than the dollar menu at some fast food place. I'm not in Edmond's often, but I'd surely look them up next time I'm up that way. read more

If you're used to the green lake or Alki store. The fish to me was somewhat the same.. the two things the ruined it for me was the tarter sauce and vinegar. This is not Spud & it's getting weird. First of all I, know Spud ( not Spuds ) having grown up in Seattle & frequenting both Green Lake & Alki locations many many times & one or twice @ Juanita. You know when you're eating a Spud piece of cod because.......just because, there's nothing else comparable. I now live in Edmond's & was pumped to hear that Spud was coming to town, near the ferry dock. I first tried the new location about a year ago & immediately noticed something was off. I tried it a few months later after settling in, & nope....not Spud, the fillets are cut differently & seasoning is different. Kinda weird to me, thinking it's got the same Spud sign, but different stuff. So.......yesterday after abstaining for several months gave it what would turn out to be my last try. Paid $21 for three piece cod/chips & small coleslaw. Having just had Alki Spud a few weeks ago, confirmed the smaller fillet size & non Spudlike seasoning. I am an ex commercial fisherman & know that cod is now a luxury priced item, but holy cow. So...to sum it up, the fish & chips were good, but not Spud.......period. What's even weirder is that now it appears that each Spud has it's own website ( Edmonds & Juanita share one ) so not sure what's going on. Maybe somebody can explain. read more

The halibut and chips is where it's at! I tried it with garlic aioli. The restaurant was clean and the employees were friendly.

They charged me for drinks I had not ordered. I noticed this while reviewing my receipt about 2 minutes after paying. Since we were given (and charged for) more cups than we had in our party of 5, I took the empty unused cups back up to the counter along with my receipt and asked for a refund. I was told that they are unable to give refunds but that they could give me some extra food instead. I can't speak for anyone else, but I usually order the amount of food I want, so extra food does absolutely nothing for me. So we ended up paying for items we did not receive or want. A bit of advice for anyone else ........... When paying you have the opportunity to add a tip. DO NOT add a tip ........... at least until after you receive your food. Not only was I charged for items I did not want, but I had already tipped them for that pleasure. While expensive, I do think their fish is good, but I will not visit here again. To the owner ............ I have never visited a business that cannot give a refund. Either you have a ridiculous policy, or you have a training issue in the Edmonds location. Clearly 5 people in my party (eating inside) ........ more than 5 cups both billed for and received, yet employees unable to refund for cups immediately returned unused. read more
