Enjoyed our final full day in Washington state by going to Bainbridge Island. I have seen video reviews about this spot and wanted to give it a try, and will say it did live up to expectations. Portions were great, the fish sandwich was super delicious and fresh as well as the size of the fish and chips. The place is a bit crowded during the afternoon, so keep that in mind, and if you do not have kids/teenagers along with you, sit over at the bar portion of the place, better luck finding a spot to sit at. I was excited to try Proper Fish based on all the positive reviews, so we drove over to Bainbridge Island from Sequim last week. I'm a Brit and was really looking forward to some authentic "fish and chips". The fish was excellent and huge, but the chips weren't crisp or salty......I was so disappointed. This famous spot on Bainbridge has huge portions that look great on camera: think thick fries, lengthy fish fillet, or onion rings the size of burger buns. We were headed to the water for a lunch view but saw this place in a whim & stopped in. It was packed inside & out! The fish & chips were tasty. I enjoyed the fresh Alaskan fish. The fries were just ok. It's served with a dollop of puréed peas that my husband tasted & said it had a sage flavor. My husband ordered the lobster roll which was stuffed full of lobster. He subbed a salad for fries that was fresh. I also ordered a peach bourbon smash. It was so good. I was kind of knocking because of the size but the taste factor totally made up for it. Weekends at Proper Fish are bananas and for good reason. This place is hands down the best fish and chips in the state. Hell it might be the best in the country. It is a true nod to the proper British entree. We arrived when the line was relatively short but within 20 min it was wrapped around the corner nearly. Rest assured the line moved fast but it's still shocking to see. The entire restaurant is first come first serve seating so plan ahead or consider a picnic approach. We ordered and headed across the street to a table under a gazebo. From order to pick up the wait was roughly 25 on a Saturday at 11am- ish but it was packed with standing room only. We recently dined at Proper Fish on a busy Saturday for an early dinner. As expected, the line was long. When we got to the cashier, she told us it would take about an hour for our food. There are several tables inside and outside that are casually up for grabs. We didn't have to wait long to get a really good corner table in the back near the self-serve water station which nicely offers a carafe filled with ice water with lemon and another one without lemon. After less than an hour, as promised, our food came out fresh and steaming hot. I don't know if I'm just lucky or not super picky, but I thought our food looked amazing and tasted delicious! Our fish was juicy and perfectly cooked. It was the similar long fillet size that I remember having when I visited England. A nice touch is the fish and chips are laid on top of newspaper printed food safe parchment paper. The servers were friendly and helpful. They gave us a generous amount of hand-cut fries and just the right amount of minty mushy peas and tartar sauce. Of course, I doused my fish with a generous amount of malt vinegar the way I like it, and voilà, I was transported back to jolly old England! In my humble opinion, Proper Fish is a must place to dine when you're visiting Bainbridge Island. Then, a great idea is to walk the wonderful calories off and fight off the impending food coma by perusing the various cute shops and small businesses in their charming Downtown. My friends and I recently checked out Proper Fish during a visit to Bainbridge Island. We weren't super hungry so between the four of us, we only shared a single order of their fish and chips and a cup of clam chowder. After placing our order, our food was quickly prepared. Although I didn't set a timer, I would estimate it only took five minutes for our food to come out. Impressive, considering we were dining at 12:00 p.m. right as the lunch rush was coming through. The battered fish is fried well -- crispy and not oily, but the batter was a bit thick, and the fish was overcooked and didn't flake apart the way a tender piece of fish does when it's delicately prepared. I appreciate that the outside of the fish is generously salted. In addition to the tartar sauce and wedges of lemon that are included, there is also malt vinegar available at the table. While the fish was dry, everything else that was included in the entree was not bad. In fact, I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of mushy peas, and the thick cut fries were very crispy. My other notable criticism is around two key items: the disappointing chowder and the general cleanliness -- of lack thereof, of the restaurant. All four members of my party tried out the chowder and we all agreed that it was incredibly bland. The chowder lacked both salt and flavor, and tasted like hot, boiled cream. Regarding cleanliness, a few of us received cutlery that wasn't clean, and there were actually a few ants crawling on the table inside as well. Some other Yelpers have brought this up in their reviews, but Proper Fish unfortunately does not have the best track record when it comes to health inspections. The actual fish piece was tiny.. the batter was hard and you could feel the oil sit in your mouth after eating. The chips were too potatoey, not crispy and they give you one piece of lemon for the huge piece of fish. The tartar sauce was okay, it needed more dill and vinegar in my opinion. It just tasted creamy, but it was the best sauce out of everything they had. The cod chowder was the best thing we ate, although it does not come with bacon so it's probably the cheapest thing to make. Clams did not taste fishy, and it was creamy in the best way! I would recommend this but would not line up or go out of my way solely to get this. Pass on the toasted bread. It's lightly buttered but there's nothing special to it. It's also on the thinner side. Chipotle aioli had a strong chipotle flavor, basil aioli tasted like pesto in the best way, mary rose was kind of a pink mayo moment, and the cilantro cream was creamy. Although all sauces were good, there was nothing special about any of them so I would not reorder. There's a self-serve water station inside, the service is good but it felt and smelled too oily inside so sitting outside is your best bet. I have been wanting to eat here since I moved to Seattle 2 years ago, and I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed when I finally got to try it today. We traveled to Bainbridge from Seattle just to eat here. The service was great and the staff were kind. But the food was bad. The fish was extremely battered and overcooked. They were too crunchy and hard. The fries were a mix of fresh/hot and stale/cold. They had the potential to be good if they were all fresh, but they weren't. The best thing we had was the cod chowder, but it also wasn't that special, it was just the only thing we could actually enjoy. The toasted bread was also cold and had no flavor. Also, they were sold out of onion rings at 3pm. We tried each of the sauces they offer, and they were all mid. I couldn't even say which one I liked the most because I didn't like any of them. Split between two people, we did not finish our order of one fish and chips, 6 oz chowder, and toasted bread. Even then, the food and oil sat heavily and made me feel pretty gross after eating this meal. The outdoor seating is the only good place to sit because it's extremely muggy and stuffy inside the shop. There are clean bathrooms and self serve water. How do you make a good establishment better in one of Western Washington's key tourist towns? Provide a 'Child-Free' option! Look, I'm OK with kids. I know they're the future and all that, but after spending too many hours in the 'Screaming Baby Section' of long overwater flights and putting up with other people's undisciplined little hellions, I really treasure quiet places where my wife and I can enjoy adult conversation, adult beverages, good food, and NO little brats underfoot. Proper Fish, which is easily one of Bainbridge's most popular restaurants, heard the call, and a year ago opened an adults-only bar and dining space next door to their insanely popular (and in the summer and weekends) insanely crowded main location. Hallelujah! THE ROSES: The space! Bright, airy, squeaky clean, tastefully decorated. Pleasant, efficient, and professional staff. Reasonable selection of beers, wine, and cocktails. The food comes from the same kitchen. You still have to order at the counter in the main dining room, take a number, then come next door to the bar/restaurant and find a seat. The staff will bring your order to you. The food is more hit than miss. The signature fish and chips is arguably the best English-style battered cod this side of Brighton. You get a single impossibly long strip of battered cod served over what appear to be hand-cut fries and a small side of mushy peas (with just a kiss of mint!). They also offer items like fish sandwiches and fish tacos. The fish is a delight - not greasy, and the batter is perfectly light and seasoned. THE THORNS: The biggest letdown is the chowder. I'll be honest - they continue (see my review from 2019) to serve it at an unappetizingly lukewarm temperature. It should be piping hot. It is also a bit on the thin side, and seriously bland. It desperately needs seasoning. If they could just get their act together with this dish, this restaurant would be an easy '5-star' for me. Their Cesar Salad is a bit under thought as well. It consists of large (bigger than a mouthful) romaine spears, each with grated cheese, croutons, and such inside. Are you supposed to eat this with a fork, or pick it up like endive boats? If it's the latter, it's really too sloppy as it's coated all over with (a rather tasty) Cesar dressing. Fine if you're the 'lick your fingers' type, but if you're of a more genteel persuasion, it's either an awkward or messy bite. PF needs to decide what this really is, and proceed accordingly. PF is also a rather spendy bite. Two servings of Fish and Chips, two beers, and a shared salad came out to a little under $100 when you factor in the gratuity. Still, with our areas outlandish minimum wage and onerous business taxes, it's understandable. It's ironic that Fish and Chips, originally a cheap meal for the masses, would command 'Carriage Trade' prices! One last peeve: Your order at the counter, and the tip screen starts at !8% and goes up to 25 or 30% for pre-programmed tip options. This is ridiculous! For as long as I can remember, 15% was the Standard Tip for decent table service where a waiter comes to you to take your order, answers questions, makes recommendations, delivers your meal, and brings you your check. I can see paying 10% for counter service where my food is brought out to me, but 25%??? On top of that, you have the counter clerk looking at (judging?) you while you make your choice (yes, 'Custom Tip' and 'No Tip' are options, if you like to live dangerously). STOP THE MADNESS! THE VERDICT: Issues with the side dishes, aside, Proper Fish is a real gem. Opening an 'adults only' dining venue is a real blessing to deal with the crowds and noise of their main dining space. They take your phone number and reach out when the food is ready which is nice cause you can walk around town while you wait. A picture speaks a thousand words..."Improvement Needed". We saw a TikTok on this place and had to give it a try. We traveled over an hour and found that parking was almost nonexistent. We aimlessly meandered through noisy, cramped areas making our way from door to door then to a "bar area" where someone finally explained to go a bit further to place our order in another section of the building. We met the host who gave us menus and told us to order and to "sit wherever you can find a seat". We placed our order and highlighted there was no seating. He said there's a "bar area" that we could sit in and he would make sure our food made it to us. He handed us a metal numbered post and started taking the orders of others in line. After about 30 mins, we noticed people that ordered after us were getting their orders and we still hadn't been served. I approached the host and he said he had made a mistake with our number and had been looking for us but our food had only been done a couple of minutes. He brought us our food which also needed improvement. The fish was a thin filet of cod, fries were Luke warm (at best) and the bottled coke we purchased from the fridge was not sealed. As we were deciding to leave we noticed a sign posted on the tinted window next to our table and well away from the restaurant entrance from the Health Department giving them a rating of "Needs Improvement". My friend's husband recommended Proper Fish for fish and chips and I'm so glad he did. We heard it's supposed to be Seattle's top fish and chip restaurant so we had to try it. The restaurant itself was buzzing with two different dining rooms and an outdoor seating area as well. You place your order at the counter and they'll deliver the food when it's ready. We tried the fish and chips and the soup of the day which was cod chowder. This soup was perfectly seasoned and tasted just like the New England style clam chowder I know and love. Solid. Went on a Saturday around 12:00PM, there were only about five people in front of us at that time. When we got to the front of the line we were told that we aren't able to order any sides, so we got the fried oysters, fish and chips, and a small cod chowder to split amongst three people. We originally wanted the minty mushy peas + just the fried fish so we didn't end up with extra fries left over, which we did. The fish was definitely the best part of the meal. The oysters were super meaty and delicious, but quite heavy with the breadcrumbs. The basil pesto and the tartar sauce were both outstanding! My family and I came here while we were on a family birthday vacation. We stayed in Seattle but took the ferry to Bainbridge Island. This was our first stop. No waiting in line, got a table immediately. Food was fresh and the drinks were delicious. The portion sizes were huge! The food, drinks and customer service were all a 10/10. Place is sort of hidden off the street. To get to the restaurant, you have to walk down a sidewalk past the exterior entrance to their bar and along some of their outdoor dining. You place your order at the register. Both and person who took our order and the person who delivered our food to our table were kind and helpful. The 12oz bowl of Fish Chowder ($10) was perhaps the best thing I ate over the course of a week in the Seattle area that wasn't a part of the food tour that I did. read more
