This restaurant opened pretty recently near the waterfront. I was a bit unsure on what to expect - because on one hand it felt like a classic overpriced spot targeting tourists looking for fish, but on the other side Tom Douglas has opened a lot of pretty good places across the city. I had the fish and chips, which are three pieces of Alaskan cod - coming with fries, tartar sauce, and ketchup. These were seriously awesome. I have to first talk about the beer batter on the outside, which has a phenomenal crunch. It's craggly and crunchy in the best of ways - with a consistent crispiness across the entire fish for every piece. I don't think I've ever had a crunch this good on fish and chips. The oil is clearly fresh, and it's served with basically no delay from the frying. I also loved the cod inside. It's super moist and flaky. Obviously, the fish doesn't have a lot of fat, but it makes up for it with a disappearing texture where you barely even need to bite through. They've clearly gotten the formula right on the fish. If that wasn't enough, the fries were easily the best I've ever had with fish and chips. They were hot, thick, and fluffy - a perfect combination that led to delicious results. The portion on these was great as well. If I had one complaint, the tartar sauce wasn't very good. It felt like it was missing both fat and acid, and tasted closer to ranch than what I was expecting a tartar sauce to be. I just didn't end up using it for the fish. Yes, this is pricey. The 3-piece order cost me $26 before tax/tip. That's quite expensive - despite a solid portion size. Is this the best fish and chips in the city? To me it's between this and Pacific Inn Pub. They have a much better tartar sauce and serve a larger portion at a third less of the price, but I think the actual fish and the fries here are better. I would say it's a toss-up - you can't go wrong with either one. Overall, a fantastic new opening that I would love to bring people to. 9/10 read more

I should've known when we hopped off the Market traffic that no line, meant meh. Definitely wasn't our favorite meal we had in Seattle. The chowder was odd tasting. I didn't eat more than two bites. My fish was way over cooked. The fries were decent. Server was excellent and I felt bad dinging the star for her. She was great at keeping our waters filled and having a pleasant conversation. Restaurant was busy enough and the wait for the bathroom is in the same hallway the kitchen uses. I heard many complaints about this fact while I was in the tight quarters. Don't let its Pike Place-adjacent waterfront location fool you, Mr. Fish is not some tourist trap without any real substance to the food. We sampled widely from the menu, and walked away satisfied with the meal. Favorites included the white chowder (accompanied by the garlic foccacia bread to dip), fried calamari, and fried shrimp. The salmon "burger" was solid too, with two generous slabs of clearly fresh fish. Also worth a shoutout is the service, which made us feel welcome and relaxed even during world cup traffic. What was a little bit of a letdown? This may be surprising based on the restaurant's name, but the fried fish...and the chips/fries. Neither were *bad*, but I would've liked both to be crispier. My friend and I came here on a busy Saturday but it's a huge restaurant in a popular tourist area so they are definitely well-suited to accommodate lunch rushes. We got patio seating and ordered the rockfish tacos, the king of the sea (which is a piece of cod over a bed of fries and a cup of chowder), and the 30 mile clams. Our server was nice but obviously busy and we noticed that it took our food quite a while to come. It eventually did arrive all at once and by that time we were starving lol. The clams were an absolute showstopper. We especially loved the broth and dipped everything into it because it was that good! It came with two slice of garlic bread. I even wanted to add something to it to soak up ALL the broth. My friend enjoyed the tacos and while I really liked the piece of fried cod, it was quite a small piece. This place is just steps from the very touristy pike market place. Service was super friendly and prompt. The food? It was very good: the creamy chowder comes with spicy fish crackers which add an extra kick to it. I was in town just in time for Seattle Restaurant Week in the Fall so I made sure to make a reservation to be able to try their $20 special of a super delicious green tomato + shrimp patty sandwich, chips, and an IPA beer. My reservation was for the weekend and I am glad I made one as this spot will fill up fast due to the Pike Place business of it (rightfully so!). I was seated at the bar and had a good view of all the food, cocktails, and beers that were made for the rest of the patrons. The fish and chips looked great but I had it made with my shrimp patty sandwich and special. I was so delighted by the coleslaw and the creativity of offering a special. I was super grateful of the bartender who served me and gave me some really awesome recommendations of other spots to go visit for coffee, dive bars, and an afternoon treat. I'd read good things about this place in the Seattle Times, so we were anxious to give it a try. We went about 45 minutes before closing on a Saturday night. I'm pretty sure they had been sitting under a heat lamp for a couple hours. The chowder seemed overly salty, and the crackers looked like Pepperidge farm seasoned fish crackers that were already in the chowder. Wish they had served those on the side so we could decide to put them in the chowder or not. We were hungry so we ate most everything, but about halfway through both came to the conclusion that the food was just not very good. When the sever first came around and asked how our food was, we had just gotten it, but although I very rarely complain about food at a restaurant, I wish I had called him back and said, "Your service is good, but could you please ask the kitchen to try again with some fried food that hasn't been sitting under the heat lamp for a long time, and could we please get the chowder with the crackers on the side?" Since we were limited on time we made a reservation. Although we probably didn't need one; since it was 4pm on a Thursday there were still multiple open tables when we arrived. I expect this place gets busier during peak lunch and dinner hours though, given its proximity to the market. We both got the King of the Sea with the Smoked Seafood Chowder. We also got a pair of oysters. I was not a fan of the oysters. They had a milky consistency and an unpleasant aftertaste. This being said; I don't eat oysters frequently, so I'm not an oyster connoisseur. The rest of the food was good. The fish was crispy and moist. The fries were thick cut and seasoned well. I will say, it was a great lunch-sized portion. But if you're going here for dinner you might to want add a second piece of fish or get the full fish & chips meal. The single piece of fish the King of the Sea comes with isn't very big. I found myself craving another piece. It's very walkable to Pike Place so convenient if you're in that area.
