I have tried Spud three times now wanting it to be great ...... it is not, sadly. The fish is bland and the chips although fresh cut seem to be sitting around in the basket all day before they are served. It's location is perfect and I am sure at one time it was great. Thee is nothing like going to Spuds on a Saturday evening and getting an order of fish and fries to go. My kids love this place. We always get an order to go and walk across the street to Green Lake to eat. Then when we're done we take a nice walk around Green Lake. The chowder and prawns are also very good. I hear people go on and on about this place. Not that impressed. Very expensive, and nothing special. About half the time I was there the guy working the register just kept bashing Jones Soda. They had a Jones Soda machine in the space, I thought that was cool. Local businesses supporting each other. But the guy working the counter kept telling everyone not to drink it and to go buy RC Cola. Local businesses that don't support other local businesses don't get my support either. read more

Feb 1 Today at Greenlake we saw the spud sign and decided to have some fish. BIG mistake. If you want alot of doughy coating and very little fish then, maybe you would like it. I stopped by here because a friend had never been. Imagining it was as good as the last time, I was greatly mistaken. As previous people have stated the oil makes the fries soggy, the fish was good, but the breading needs work, or a little more attention. What took the cake was an older employee behind the kitchen, obviously intoxicated, yes drunk, to prove it, he had one of the business' alcoholic choices in hand. Bad move bro, bad move. I felt bad for the other employee working who tried to shoo him back to the back so no one could see that he had a few too many. The place was dirty too. Love their fish and chips! Be sure not to confuse this place with the spud in West Seattle. For some reason the Greenlake location is WAY better. It's a bit spendy, about the portions are good. Another case of "not as good as it used to be". I've been here twice in my life. First time was years ago and I thought the fish was delicious, but I don't live close enough to Greenlake to make the trip often. Fast forward to recently and wow! i cringed at the waste of gas for the drive. I remember restaurants and their foods if the flavor is strong and unique. This came across as just plain and bland. Spud, Greenlake. After coming here for over 20 years, this is by far and away my favorite fish n chips joint, ever. I've read many of the other reviews and I honestly don't get the complaints. In the least! First of all, the fish is hand cut and breaded. This takes time and money. The fries are also hand cut. Maybe I'm just lucky in that I have mom who made these growing up. They're real fries people! Not Mc D's and they don't come "crispy". It's actually real food. As far as service goes, I've never once had a bad experience. Not once. No "surly" employees, nothing. To the contrary, I've only received, kind, very competent and even humorous service here. Due to shellfish allergies, I cannot speak for the entire menu. But the fish, the fish is extraordinary. Again the best I've ever had. It's never once been soggy, tasted old or anything but perfect. I say all this after eating during slow and packed times. And yes, I've been to Spud Alkai, it's delicious as well but, certainly no better than Greenlake! I guess if delicious, real food, prepared fresh daily isn't your thing, perhaps Ivar's is where you should try. I'll take this place over any other, any day! read more

This place uses a large amount of really nasty tasting batter over their fish. It was a half inch worth of batter in some spots. Imagine pancake batter with no sugar. Its not like Ivars where there is a thin coat of crust over the fish. Here its super thick and nor does it taste good in my tongue's opinion. And their tartar sauce doesn't taste very good either to me really ruins it for my tongue. And its super expensive for a meal that will only somewhat fill me up, and im pretty short at 5'7" tall, about $15. I say give the people that don't just want every penny from you they can get, offering as little as you'll take in return, people who want to fill you up properly for a meal when you hand them plenty of money. read more

I ate at Spuds for the first time approx. 13.5 years ago and wasn't impressed. I decided to give it another try given I was in the area and fish 'n' chips was sounding pretty tasty. Typically I'm amazed at how much things can change over time...especially 13+ years. However, that was not the case here. What did I order? - 4 oz Fish and Chips (3 pieces of fish over fries) - Deep Fried Mushrooms - Sweet Potato Fries - Large Pineapple Shake - Tartar Sauce (Yes, it's on the order list. If the customer wants tartar sauce, they have to add it to the order) The fish and chips tasted decent, but was over-priced for the quantity received. The deep fried mushrooms were good. The sweet potato fries were not the best I've had, but good. I love shakes, and this was the first shake I've consumed that I did not thoroughly enjoy. I was stunned! Usually, if someone messes up a shake, it's because it's runny and not thick enough. There was so much pineapple in this shake that it was like eating pineapple with ice cream and milk mixed in for fluidity purposes. I should've received a spoon, not a straw. I had to take the top off the cup and poor it down my gullet. That brings us to the tartar sauce. I am extremely irritated by any establishment that charges its customers for sauce. It's not like it costs much to make, so it's simply another revenue generating machine that gouges the customer. The 29 bucks I paid for the aforementioned items wasn't enough? The best thing about my lunch was the view and my co-eaters. Notes: - Pleasant view of the park and lake across the street. - Private lot in the back. Might be the best fish in Seattle......deep fried that is. They only use Cod and Hailbut. The key to their success is the ownership, unlike the Alki location which is now owned by Ivars, this location takes more pride in their fish and it shows. It's always consistent and the same lady fillets the fish every time. The main thing that distinguishes this place from the other fish n chip joints is the fact they fillet their own fish and it's never too thick (uneven cooking) or gray (bad filleting). It's pure flaky cod and it cooks even every time. The breading is awesome and I must admit I just think the fries are average here. They also buy their fish by the year.....in other words they offer to buy their fish in bulk at a set price from a good fish purveyor for the same price for 365 days. What this means is good quality and they will not keep jacking the price up if a fish shortage occurs. Their prices are already on the high side for a fish n chip place. 2 piece order of fish n chips runs around $8.50....with a extra piece for $3.80 more. The orders are good sized and filling and well worth the drive and the price if your craving some of Seattle's best fish. There is a reason this place has been here for all these years. They might be closing down and putting Condos at this location..........but they will not close....they will either open next door or very nearby while they wisely develope their valuable property. We've been to the Alki location several times so for something new we thought we would try this location. While waiting in line, they announced they were closing in 25 minutes and only had ONE piece if fish left and couldn't possibly make more. I don't understand the hype. When I moved to Seattle a few years ago, an OUT-OF-TOWNER recommended this place! However, when I ordered my scallops, I got -I think four?? for a ridiculous price (I want to say $10). It wasn't even that good... it was unique, but not all that good. They do charge for tartar and ketchup but so do dicks and various other businesses. I have been going here since birth and i also work here so i know a little more of the behind the scene stuff. It has been a time since I had been in here, but have tried it twice in the past 3 months and I like this place! I used to be a huge fan of Ivar's but in my opinion they are not nearly as good as they were 20 yrs ago. Spuds on the other hand has gotten better. Sure they're prices had to come up to date to cover the fact they have good food. They have a generous portion fish and chips, with not too much breading that's just thin but crispy enough and stays with your fish. Tartar sauce is always on par. The salmon sandwich is good and the dill sauce is very nice. The fries are just right, not crispy dry or too soggy, but right in the middle. They serve a few nice beers, have exceptionally friendly staff and composte their waste, and they haven't changed their logo or style since the 1940's, what else can you ask for? I don't understand the bad reviews though, of course it's not going to be authentic british fish and chips, look where you are, we aren't going to even try ;) And prices are higher everywhere, and are mostly apparent to those who eat at fast food chains too much and make an attempt to step out of that mold. sorry guys :( read more

Almost went to Spuds on Alkai but heard it was now part of Ivars. Had Ivars the night before so went to the Greenlake location instead. Glad we did. I was impressed as I walked in when I saw Tim breading a filet; you don't see that at Ivars. Ordered the 2 piece to share with my wife. WOW words can't say enough about how great the food is. Loved the fries and the chocolate shake-mixed the old way. This is food I remember growing up to. We will have to make that special trip up north from Renton whenever we're in town. read more

I was killing time today, waiting for Spud to open, and i realized that I had never looked up their reviews on Yelp. What's up with the hate? I love Spud. And today's meal didn't disappoint. My single order was yummy, as usual, with a delicious piece of fish and terrific fries. Like always. The staff couldn't be friendlier, and they bussed my table the moment I got up to leave. I was a long time fan of Spuds and their food. I took my Mom here one evening for fish & chips, and walked next door afterward for dessert at Tacos Guaymas. About an hour later, I come to find my car has been towed by Spuds. Apparently, after they close at 6pm during weekdays, they have all of the cars parked in their parking lot towed. Not very considerate of their patrons. The total cost for being towed was $450. My family and I will never go to Spuds again after how I was treated. read more

I didn't even get to the food because I went to the ATM first!!! During the 2 minutes it took me to draw cash, they gave me a ticket! Yes, I pulled in and parked not facing the building with all the signs. No, the lot was NOT even 1/4 full. Yes, I said I was going to go in and order food. NONE of that mattered. Spud has lots of what I love about Seattle. It hasn't changed in a long, long time. It's not a nationwide chain. The building has a unique character, and yes, that might include a bit of dirt and ugliness. The employees are friendly. They do things their own way even if it's not the norm, like charging $0.25 for a tiny cup of ketchup. They pretty much stick to frying fish, and they do it well. Spud's is a dud. Having recently moved back from California I wanted my wife to try this local institution. I longed for that flaky seafood experience I remembered from high school and college hanging out at Alki beach. What we got was a nasty deep fried mess from a place that need a visit from the Health Department. (floors dirty, garbage overflowing). Greasy, nasty, limp, and disgusting. I've been to Spud Fish & Chips in Juanita (Kirkland) dozens of times and it's always been great, so finding myself in Greenlake one night I decided it be a nice quick dinner - it wasn't either. I'm going to guess that the Juanita Spud and the Greenlake Spud are not owned by the same people. The fish I had at Greenlake Spud was covered in a thick clumpy batter oozing with grease. The fries were limp, pasty, and also oozing with grease. Do yourself a favor and drive to the Spud in Juanita, or go to Ivar's, or buy some Gorton's fish sticks, because this place is horrible. read more

I grew up going to Spud's on Sundays for family outings and a special treat. I still enjoy the food and, during my recent visit, the service was very friendly and accommodating. When I placed my order, because I only wanted one piece of fish, I asked for a large piece. The owner let me select my piece of fish before he cooked it. Then he threw in ketchup with no charge...just to be nice. I really enjoyed my meal. read more
