I had to come to Yelp to remark on Spud's Fish and Chips. A place I've loved since high school. Yes, the charming old vintage building is gone, but you know what? The food is better than ever! Incredibly light fried clams and prawns. The fries are delicious, too, I completely disagree with the reviewer who said they were blah " at this price point." I've been going to the various Spud locations since the 1960's (when they had a cigarette vending machine in the lobby). Haven't been here since the month before the Covid lockdown, so I took an out of town guest there for "the best fish and chips in town". Very disappointed. Unsure if ownership has changed or what. A Seattle landmark! This place has been around for years! Pretty tasty food - I got the clam strips and chips. Overall not too bad! It wasn't the greatest food ever, but satisfied my hunger for some fish and chips! The fries looked and tasted fresh cut and the clam strips were crunchy and delicious! They had a Jones soda dispenser which was pretty cool too! Its a great spot to grab a quick bite before walking around the lake or a good place to hang out after! I have fond memories of coming here with my mom when I was younger so it was a bit nostalgic too! The fish is tender and comes with a light and pleasant breading. Good chunky tartar sauce with a distinct pickle flavor. The fries are limp and lacking flavor. Hint: they do not automatically give you tartar sauce or catsup, so be sure to ask for some before you leave the restaurant. The "cod" that they serve you is just thick enough to hold both sides of the batter together so that essentially what u r eating is a paper-thin piece of fish surrounded by batter. Spuds is a mainstay within the Seattle restaurant scene as far as fish and chips goes especially when it comes to the historic Alki location. Greenlake also has some of the same nostalgic charm to it and is always a decent place to stop for lunch. Unfortunately my last visit to Spuds I would have to label as disappointing. I'm not sure if it's just me but everything I ate was very bland and I don't remember their food being that way. Maybe it's just because I am used to sitting near the water at Alki beach with the sites, sounds, and smells enhancing my dining experience. My meal consisted of one piece of fish, calamari appetizer, small clam chowder, and small cole slaw. Not one of these items had any real flavor to speak of and the tartar sauce they offer is OK but nothing special. Aside from that misstep the service was really good. Everyone working was on task and very friendly. My order came out with minimal wait time and the appearance of everything was really good. This is enough to keep me interested in visiting here on occasion, but more than likely I will stick with the Alki location as with their food leaning to the pricier side, I will want a better experience than I had at Greenlake. read more

I have eaten at this location many time, took my children whom are really picky about fish, and I had to beat them off of my food with a stick (Well, not really but you understand what I mean), the fries are wonderful I'm a big potato fan and enjoy good fries when I can, only bummer I have about it is that you have to pay for the condiments, but for $.25 for a large but it is adiquate portions and comes in a sealed/ resealable container which could explain the price. I always get a double and I'm stuffed when done, prices are a little steep so not so good for pocket book. No Trans Fat, (i.e. they don't use fryer shortening, bad for arteries). You can get cold beer and shakes which are really good, unless you are lactose intolerant like me, but tastes good. If you get a soda get a large and share because you unlimited refill while there. Overall: Great place to take the family, i worked for skippers and I would rather go here for my food. Nice park across the street, so get the food and run the kids to sleep... ;-) read more

Ok, it's moving into the apartment building that will take its place, but still. 1940's diners are hard to come by here in Seattle, and Spud's is one of the few that combines stellar service with a singular setting. We stopped to shoot (and snack) before developers work their dirty magic. Best fish n chips I've ever had, including those in Jolly Old England. We got a triple for the three of us and it was almost too much flaky goodness. I recommend splitting an order and letting it settle. My body doesn't do well with that much oil, but I couldn't stop!! Man I miss this place, we use to live near the south end of the zoo and this place was our regular treat every once in a while. I used to hang out in the back as a kid, waiting for a bud of mine to finish up cutting the fries. Yeah, they actually use to hand cut the fries!! Those fries are still what brings us back to this old haunt, the fish is also a fav. The fish filet's are large and thick, the batter is light and crisp, OMG, I'm dieing here!!! I need a fix!! Not sure if they still have the soft serve ice-milk, ooooooh gads that stuff is addicting. Busy location because of being next to Greenlake, but well worth the wait. In short, Spud's is a great taste of local flavor...but the price was more than we expected - $75 for a family of 6 at lunch time, with waters to drink. Will we go back? I took my mother and niece here during their visit to Seattle. They had eaten at the Spud on Alki during their first trip here so when my niece noticed this location, she was excited to have more fish + chips. Parking was easy enough in their lot behind the store. All the tables were taken except for the long table closest to the door. A lone customer sat in the centre of the bench until my mother politely asked him to scoot down. He obliged us and my family sat while I ordered. The dining area is small, maybe 4 two-seaters and one long table that can seat 4-5 if you squeeze in. We wiped down the table and from the steady stream of customers, it seemed like the counter help didn't have a chance to service the dining area. I'd imagine people take their food to go and enjoy it at water's edge. The folk behind the counter were very nice and our food was cooked to order. I remembered a friend of mine mentioned getting soggy fries here. I requested and received crisp ones with no fuss. The cod was flaky and not greasy. I think the only thing I'd pass on was the fried mushrooms. There weren't enough for the price and they didn't have a lot of flavour. read more

Not a bad fast food spot. I got the prawns and chips and also had a bite of the cod. I think I preferred the cod over the shrimp. I liked the tartar sauce- good balance of tang. My family and I stopped by on a stroll around the lake, hungry for seafood. We'd been by the place for as long as we'd lived, without ever stopping. Hadn't missed much. The clams and chips were pretty good, with a small tartar to mask the deep fryer aftertaste. My daughter's Caesar salad was pretty lame, as was the wife's clam(less) chowder. I went to spuds for amazing fish and chips. And boy was I right , the double fish and chip was really good not greasy. I didn't know I was walking into a grump chef restaurant... after spending almost 70 dollars plus tips for four people for lunch, I got berated and verbally assaulted as the angry red head trash police yelled across the store for putting my child's diaper in the wrong trash bin. He proceeded to dig out my sons diaper and demand I take it. I asked him where the correct trash was and he said it was customers only(trash for customers only?!!) and I then told him I was a customer, the tune changed and said this trash was for employees only. So thank you angry red head for the awful experience I had, unfortunately I would love to come back and even thought while I was eating this is a place I would take all my out of town friends to, but thanks your abrasive and assaultive behavior I will Never eat at a spuds again. I think the Spud love must come down to nostalgia. I have often said that nostalgia is a revisionist historian (trademark pending), and I know that in my case, having eaten often as a child at Skippers and Taco Time (the latter being a chain where they've somehow magically replicated the perfect flavorlessness of iceberg lettuce in all their ingredients--even the hot sauce!) revisiting these places, one tends toward overly charitable assessments sometimes. I'd had no experience with Spud, but it's so irresistibly close. We'd just moved into the Greenlake area when, sparked by some mention of the place on Facebook, the little ingrates and I headed over on foot to find it. This, we could have done blindfolded, as there was a dirty grease smell in the air for at least a block hearkening our proximity. I actually didn't recognize this as the fish-and-chips smell; I thought someone was burning a bouncy kastle or something. It smelled like burning glue or plastic. Yech. My boys were making up fantastic possibilities for what was burning, with "Malibu Barbie summer camp" factoring in among our favorites. Anyway, the place was rather dingy and dirty to behold, and I am ridiculously lax about that type of thing. When I cook at home, I've been known to drop sushi on the floor, blow on it a time or two, and eat it unapologetically. But, see, I'm not in business for that type of thing. This place was busy, so I do understand, but it looked and smelled unappealing to me. It was also rather expensive, for fish-and-chips NOT served among seagulls at the waterfront or at Pike Place Market. All of this would have mattered to me less had I actually liked how it tasted. But it tasted actually dirty; as if the oil had been unchanged for days, and had maybe been used to cook jeans and baseball mitts as well as fish. The texture of the fish was perfect, and deserves credit for that. The fish had a moist, generous flake and was cooked to perfection from a temperature standpoint. But the oil tasted like a hairbrush left behind at a carnival bathroom and this really ruined the fish for me. I am really, really hoping I came by just on a bad day...but jogging by the place nowadays I still smell it from blocks away and I doubt I'll get past that to go back. The fries were limp and seemed depressed; very greasy. I did really like the sweet and tangy taste of the tartar sauce, and used it to mask the bad-oil taste of the fish.
