We were pretty excited to try out this place as it has been a staple at Greenlake for a very long time. In its new space, the place provides a very clean and comfortable dining experience. We ordered the fish and chips, and were unimpressed with the thin slices of fish, and the not-so-crunchy fries. Two pieces of fish, friends, and a soda plus tips came out to be $29. I visited the Spud location in Juanita just over a week ago and bought a regular chocolate milkshake for around $6.50. I recieved a large cup around 16 oz and enjoyed myself. At the greenlake location I bought the same thing a chocolate milkshake but received a cup that was barely 12 oz - and paid almost $8 for it! I had been to Spud several times at three of their locations. I have always had great meals and kind of surprised that the reviews were not higher. This time I had what I usually have, the single order of fish and chips. I have liked all of the seafood items here, but fish is still my favorite. The breading is perfect and it is always fried just write. I love to sprinkle a little vinegar on top. The fries are wonderful also--the potatoes work so great, perhaps a little soggy, but absolutely delicious. At other times I have had the onion rings that are also really tasty. I used to love this spud's before it closed. I still love it, but it's a little different now. I used to get halibut and chips and those are no longer on the menu, so I got the cod instead. It's still really good, but I do miss the halibut. I also got the blackberry milkshake....highly recommend...it was great before and it's exactly the same now, so that was awesome. TLDR: Spongy fries. Nice staff. Free Jones Soda refills. Small fast food joint with 6 two person tables and one large table for about 4 people. Plenty of outdoor seating. Loud fan noise if you sit inside. If you order their popular fish and chips, you will pretty much get it right away since they always have it in the fryer. If you order something else, they have to cook it and it may take a few minutes. Free jones soda and tea refills are a plus. Fries: Personally not a fan of the spongy texture. They fries are not salted--if they are it's a light hint. No crunch to the fries. They just taste like spongy potato. McDonalds has ruined me. I'm not a health nut but I guess this is how "healthy" fries taste. Grilled Salmon: Nice flavor and texture. Slight herby taste with a hint of citrus. Tartar sauce: House made and costs extra if you want it. I'd say it's heavy on the mayo and doesn't have much tartness to it. read more

What's going on with the fries? I don't think this food is overpriced if you look at the current price of seafood and factor in the labor and other stuff. The fish and oysters are delicious, but like other people mentioned, the fries are mysteriously limp/soggy. . . .I thought maybe it was b/c I took mine to go and they became soggy from walking home with them(?) but then it seems several other people are saying the fries are not quite up to the level. They taste fresh and potato-ey so it's a shame. . . .Also agree that the people working here have great energy! I expected fries when I ordered Fish and Chips. The Toast website asked if I wanted cole slaw which I thought was a free addition to the order. But instead substituted my fries (2 large orders and 1 small order) for cole slaw. Once I got home, I discovered the missing fries were not there. My family was hungry and just ate the fish without fries. Everyone was clearly disappointed. I called the manager once I got home, his reply was too bad. Finally he agreed to give me fries but I had to drive all the way back to the restaurant. There is no way we were going to have a 2nd dinner of just fries. I asked for a price adjustment - he refused. I expected to get the cost of the fries deducted rather than a difference between the cole slaw (which I really didn't need or want) and the cost of the large fries order. I talked to the owner the next day and only got the difference between the price of fries vs cole slaw. I wanted fries not cole slaw and didn't get what I ordered and wanted. I respect the history and legacy of this establishment here in Seattle, but I would have thought that with it being around for so long, the food would be better. I have had so many different fish n' chips here that I wanted to try spuds to compare. Definitely, the worst I've ever had up here so far. The fries were meh, but what was supposed to be the star fell flat. My fish was almost inedible. Spud's coats their fish in a very heavy batter as well as the onion rings. The fish looked really good and golden on the plate but when I bit into it, I was met with a raw, dough-ey texture inside. I looked at the inside of my piece of fish only to see that the batter was raw inside. I mean, are they trying to get people sick? It could have spent some more time in the fryer. I ended up peeling off the think layer of batter to reveal a small piece of actual fish. I did not enjoy my meal, plus I felt it was over-priced for what I got. I most likely won't be back. Zero stars is more appropriate. I've eaten once at each of the Spuds locations between Green Lake Juanita Beach and Kirkland and Alki point. I've tried a few different menu choices between clam chowder cod fish halibut prawns. pretty much sampled most of what they offer on the basic menu. Never one single visit did I feel like I got good service and decent food for the crazy high price I paid each time. They must go to local high schools and intentionally hire the most smart ass kids in the entire class to come work there. And what the fuck is up with trying to charge extra for a small little serving of tartar sauce when your menu is over price near double what should be deemed fair. I honestly do not see how any of these franchises stay in business. My guess is the extreme profit margin from the prices you charge. read more

Fish and fries are great but not for the price. If you're looking for a cute bite to eat, Spuds is the place go! I'm coming here all the way from Iowa City so I thought it'd be a great opportunity to try some fresh coastal seafood. Although they do call their fish here sustainable, it's not fresh. The cashier talked about it being wild Alaskan caught so it's sure better than buying from fisheries. As for the fries the cooks don't put anything on them but provide malt vinegar with and without garlic and plenty of salt. Sadly you have to buy the tartar sauce! Like I say they're a bit expensive but selling sauce seems downright unruly. Then comes the homely feel to the place. I'd say what you don't buy in the fish the aesthetic surely makes up for it. Green Lake out the window and the swordfish on the wall make eating here fun. The staff was also very nice. For a date it's perfect I'd say. A nice double order will certainly feed the two of you enough to get a lap around green lake until you find a nice spot to lay down and relax. I'd certainly come again. read more

I had to come to Yelp to remark on Spud's Fish and Chips. A place I've loved since high school. Yes, the charming old vintage building is gone, but you know what? The food is better than ever! Haven't been here since the month before the Covid lockdown, so I took an out of town guest there for "the best fish and chips in town". Very disappointed. Unsure if ownership has changed or what.
