This was my first time walking in to the establishment after living nearby for a few years. Upon entering it seemed super chilled and low-key and not packed which was nice. I then proceeded to order all my foods but the server had a wild demeanor that seems uncalled for. I came in polite, I've spoken politely, I've been extremely kind but I'm not sure why I've sat at my table for (no exaggeration) 40 mins for a refill. It's a fun place. Music is always fun and different and the vibe is pretty cool. Drinks are hit or miss. I don't recommend the signature cocktails as my wife got some kind of vodka mix and it was INSANELY sweet and you couldn't even finish the drink. Service was also interesting as when you try to order at the bar they won't serve you if you're sitting at a table. This place reminded me of the restaurant part of the TRIPLE ROCK (RIP) in Minneapolis! Why? 1. Very similar type menu = Perfect for Vegans 2. Right next to a great rock n roll club 3. This is a great place to stop in and feel at home. There's no pressure when you walk in the door, but once you find a spot to hang out, whether at the bar or in a booth, service is friendly and helpful without being pushy. We ordered from the happy hour menu and ended up downing a few $2 pints of PBR along with a couple $1.50 jackfruit tacos and the best $3 sweet potato fries. I had the most bizarre experience for lunch yesterday and feel it's necessary to write this before I'm accused of dining and dashing. As a Black person, I am used to not getting great service due to racist stereotypes about my demographic not leaving decent tips. I've also been a server and bartender for years before changing industries and am often very patient with overwhelmed service industry staff. Yesterday myself and my friend who is an openly gay man (I feel our identities are relevant to the story because we did leave feeling discriminated against at what is supposed to be a welcoming space for LGBT+ folks and minorities) had a late lunch at the Broadway location. We grabbed a couple seats at the bar but didn't drink alcohol -- just had a glass of water each and 2 entrees with no substitutions. We were very quiet and hardly uttered a word as we were eating due to the extremely obnoxious patrons that were seated near us. At that time, we both actually felt sympathy for the bar staff because this couple was stressing US out and we weren't even the ones serving them. Imagine our surprise whenever we kept trying to get the bartender with the long blond-ish hair's attention and he would just stare at us with a blank look. We figured okay, maybe he's busy, and gave it about 15 minutes before trying to get his attention again. Again, he ignored us. He was just standing there and not helping customers plus the restaurant was not super busy, so we were growing in confusion. My friend stood up to approach him and politely asked him if we could close our tabs. This worker continued to stare at my friend with the dumbest and most delirious look on his face as if he couldn't understand why in the world we would be asking him such a stupid question. Mind you, during this entire interaction he didn't actually speak words. He just kept looking at us both with a very puzzled facial expression. I started to feel pretty frustrated because the annoying patrons seated near me were giving me anxiety and I was ready to leave. I asked him -- "So should we just go without paying?" thinking that maybe it would jolt him into remembering that he was on the clock. He looked at me with the same dumb look, shrugged, and shooed us away without saying a word. I left Sputnik after a first-time customer feeling pretty awful. As a Black person, it put me in an unsafe situation of possibly being accused of "dining and dashing" all because the worker could not find enough of a f***k to do the job he was paid to do. I'm not sure if it was drugs he was on that were making him so delirious but staff shouldn't be serving people in that state. And for Sputnik to promote itself as a safe haven for POC/LGBT+, there should be more sensitivity taken in interactions with people from these communities. This is my very first ever 1 star review. I never ever give bad reviews. This is far and above the worst service I've ever experienced. The food was great but the staff would not even acknowledge us. The blonde girl that was working the bar/waiting on us said maybe four words to us the entire time we were there but was texting and talking to her friends who were there at the bar talking trash and gossiping, very very loudly, about who knows who. It was so blatantly offensive and disrespectful and we had no idea why. She even kept her phone open and just shoved it in her back pocket, and you could see the text app open. This was because as soon as she got done with whatever it was she was doing for five seconds she went right back to texting. They have a pretty good philly cheesesteak. It has a spicy kick to it from the jalapenos. The bread was soft and crispy on the edges. The cubano sandwich was good as well, though a little too much mustard for my taste. I got my sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries. Sputnik offers a variety of dipping sauces, including one called the Sputnik special. I found out that it's ketchup, mayo and peanut butter. I normally like to try new things, but that didn't sound appealing to me at all. For the sweet potato fries, the server (who was very nice by the way) recommended the habanero jam, so I opted for that. It kind of tastes how you would expect... a sticky, sweet and very lightly spicy sauce. It was interesting but I would have preferred something else. Good place to hang out with friends. The music is not overly loud so it's easy to talk. There are booths along one wall, and a long bar along the other wall, so it's pretty easy to reach the bartenders. read more

This is the latest in our quest to eat at a new place every month and we found it to be very enjoyable and will be returning for further exploration. The Mac n Cheese was fantastic but I only got a few bites in when I wished that there had been some sort of protein like pulled pork in there. This wasn't a menu option, but I will be asking about it next time I go... what's the worst they can say? ! We liked the atmosphere, but we went in for brunch on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so I'm sure it is usually more lively. The staff was friendly and attentive without going over the top. Picture a dive bar with a few tables and the millennial dubbed "speak-easy" quality cocktails with vegan, vegetarian and omnivorous food that not only reasonably priced, but delicious and satisfying....and that is Sputnik. The tables are first come, first serve so if you are coming on a popular weekend night, be prepared for a large crowd and a wait, and possibly have to approach a table to stake your claim and wait awkwardly (very)nearby until they finish and leave so your table isn't snatched up by someone else. The place is pretty dark as a bar would be, the booths badly need to be replaced and the music is overly-loud; if you are going to chat with friends; be prepared to low-key shout. Today we went to Sputnik for brunch and mimosa. The mimosas were tasty and reasonably priced, the chicken and waffles were absolutely rancid. Not edible in the slightest. The waffles were cold and hard as if someone had just pulled a box of eggo waffles from the back of the fridge dating back to 2003 and the chicken tasted like it was twice baked and once fried then sat under a heat lamp for an additional 30 mins. Then they kindly graced me with a small packet of maple syrup that looked like it came from the McDonald's drive through. The service was mid tier at best, the music was so loud I could barely hear myself think, let alone the friends sitting with me at the table. I couldn't not recommend this enough. We came in on a Thursday for a late lunch and it was packed! Super Loud, to the point where I'm yelling at my friend to go somewhere else. The waiter hears us talking about going elsewhere and proceeds to say "Leave then" So what do we do? We leave. Then our waiter has the audacity to approach us as we're leaving and grabs me by the arm and tells me to stay and that he was just joking. Overall bad experience. Wouldn't go back. Vegan banh mi was delicious. Not much vegan ham on there, as another reviewer mentioned, but I thought it was perfect that way. Really flavorful, fresh sandwich. We also got the cauliflower wings and Nashville hot falafel. ORDER A SIDE SAUCE WITH THE CAULI WINGS. They need it. They were nice and crispy, but dying for some contrasting flavor to dip into. Otherwise they're pretty heavy and one-noted, even with the scallions, lime, and whatnot that comes on top. Ideally they'd just come with a dipping sauce (maybe something creamy or BBQ-y). The hot falafel sandwich was very good. The Thor drink was awesome. It had all the spiciness I was hoping for. Atmosphere was good, no problems with our server, who was nice and fairly attentive (went on a Saturday night, 9 or 10pm). Sidenote: I noticed another review compared this place to Triple Rock in Minneapolis (now closed), which brought back some great food/vibe memories. We went here because we are vegan and our local relatives took us here. We went for the food, not the bar. If you are going for the alcohol it might be a total different experience. The place is super tight and dark. The seating is extremely uncomfortable. The wait staff was very friendly though. We got a few vegan items off the menu but they were lacking. The corn dogs were really burnt and so greasy. Having just had the most magical corn dogs from Denver Vegan Van, I was highly disappointed. All of the food was soaked in oil. Our server was very sweet, him and lots of other servers were fun to be around with. But the night was so hectic that the place was a ocean of people and the servers were bringing us orders that hadn't placed--constantly. They were confused but friendly, I'm going to forgive that because they're sweet. the tabs were sort of mixed up charging my friend double on a 1018 drink. Another friend of mine had to remember what she drank because they lost her tab. We had lots of good food options with the Sputnik Soul Bowl being the most mellow dish ever. It was literally a thanksgiving style stir fry which was delicious I should say. The vegan hot dog was jumbo and very sweet. Drinks: 2/5 My friends and I got 4 cocktails between us. The Lavender Gin was UNDRINKABLE. The smell of lavender hits you and soon as you hold it up, and it tastes strongly of lavender and nothing else. If I didn't know better, I would've thought I was drinking detergent. Even adding extra lemonade didn't help the overwhelming taste. It sat undrunk between the 4 of us the entire time. The Thor was decently spicy and had a fair amount of alcohol. I'm not a fan of spicy drinks, so it wasn't my favorite. We also got the Bear Island, which was made extremely strong. The alcohol taste overwhelmed the fruity base and made every sip difficult. Finally, the Hibiscus drink was the best of all four. It was light and refreshing and had a fair strength as well. Food: 3.5/5 Let's start with the fries. They were floppy and oily. Some of them were underdone and chewy, and some were burnt and crispy. The salt on them was uneven as well, alternating between bland and super salty bites. HOWEVER, the sauces were to die for. We tried the creamy garlic (no idea how it's creamy if it's vegan but it was great), the sriracha mayo, and the habanero jam. Each of them had a great and unique flavor. I got a corn dog and it was the perfect thickness of breading and not too oily. I also tried the chicken sandwich, which was fried well and came with a delicious coleslaw. Service and setting: 4/5 The place looks like a bar, and feels like one too. The art on the wall adds to the fun and funky vibe. You walk in and seat yourself. We sat at a booth, which was cozy for 5 people but there was enough room for all out food and drinks. The waiter was prompt to take our food and drink orders, but they seemed a little understaffed and the drinks and checks came out slowly. I asked to add extra lemonade to my lavender cocktail, and he brought out an entire class at no extra charge. I was really excited to try this place because I have close friends who are vegetarian. Went for lunch with my friend and son. This was a great choice, as they have so many vegetarian and vegan options alongside meaty offerings. Babb mi with Tofu at $8.50 was enjoyed by my friend, but she recommends asking for extra sauce on it. Son had the Cubano @ $9, and was very happy with his choice.
