Came here for dinner on a weekday - the place was empty when we got here around 6:30, but it was raining and people slowly trickled in while we were eating so I'm guessing the weather contributed to it and their regulars usually come a little later. The service was relatively quick and the food was really delicious. If you only order one serving of meat, they bring you the meat grilled already - otherwise they have grills on every table as a typical KBBQ place does. The seafood and galbi were pretty tasty. I thought both were made pretty traditionally and don't have any complaints here. I'd definitely order either again! The naengmyeon was really fresh and the portion was pretty large. They also have the option to have the noodles be green tea flavored (I don't go to many places that serve naengmyeon so I'm not sure if this is typical) and I thought that was an interesting option. Came here many years ago and decided to try this place again last night. Price is super expensive. $177 after tax and tip for the beef combo for a party of two. You can get ayce for party of 3 for this price. Amount of food was not a lot imo, the combo is three types of meat. We came thinking we don't eat a lot but just save yourself some money and go to an ayce kbbq even if you don't eat a lot. Ironically, we were full and want to stop eating after the 2nd meat. Asked the waiter to give us the 3rd meat to take home. Owner said we cannot take the meat home uncooked. We must cook it before taking home. Banchan was just ok I guess, came with steamed egg but no soup. Definitively missing something. Never coming back again for this price. PS saw someone came in, looked at the menu and walked out. Came here for dinner with a group of friends. We arrived at 6:30 and were seated immediately. We started with chive & pepper pancakes and the rice cakes with cheese. Both appetizers were great. Pancakes were crispy while the rice cakes were gooey and smoother in a delicious red pepper sauce. For the main course, we had the pork combo platter and the marinated beef combo platter. Both had a nice variety of options and came with various salads. The staff was very involved with the cooking and made our experience very easy. Alright so I've seen this place on my grubhub list for a while now because I order Korean food pretty often. I'm hesitant to try new places for delivery, but I was getting bored with my usual and I wanted a hearty soup after a really long shift at work today. So I went with this place. I ordered the ugeogi haejangguk and some japchae. Holy wow. Everything was made & delivered on time. It arrived piping hot. They included 4 side dishes with the delivery which was really nice because not every place does that. I was super happy seeing that upon opening. The portions are generous. The soup was FULL, and not of just broth like some places. There was tons of meat and veggies in both the soup and the japchae, they didn't skimp at all. Everything was delicious- the flavor, the meat, cooked perfectly. This will definitely be a go-to order from now on. And I'll definitely be trying some other dishes as well (galbi tang is a personal favorite of mine so I'd love to try it from here). read more

Best KBBQ in New York. The owner is super friendly and often comes to cook the meat at the table himself. The rest of the staff is also pretty attentive. Their Galbi and Jowl is my favorite in all of NY. The Bonchon is always fresh and they are not stingy in what they give. The meat is better than 100% of the KBBQ spots in Ktown and Flushing (I've tried A LOT). It's a little pricier than some of the other spots nearby, and obviously pricier than the AYCE spots - but, for the price it's amazing. Came for Sunday lunch on a drizzling day, and there were only 2 tables seated. Definitely quieter than I've seen in some other reviews. Music choices were relaxing, nice K-pop songs! The banchan (complementary appetizers / meat pairings) and soup were standard and pretty good. The steamed egg was delicious. Environment/seating We came here on a during lunch time on a weekend, it was rather empty so we had no issue getting seated. There are plenty of seatings in Ssam Tong and the restaurant gives off this "homey" vibe and I kinda like it! Food: 5/5 First of all, there were a variety of banchan, which all tasted pretty good! We ordered the marinated beef set - which came with 3 types of marinated meat. In terms of the quantity, it was perfect for a couple to share (or for 3 girls' appetite!) The meat quality at Ssam Tong was amazing as well. We also found the steamed egg really delicious - light, fluffy, and well-seasoned. I did notice toward the bottom some bits did taste extra salty so perhaps egg mixture and salt were not mixed well (but hey - at least it was delicious enough that we had to eat until the last bite!) Service: 5/5 The owner was very friendly and it didn't feel rushed when he was cooking for us. He would cook one type of meat and made sure we had plenty of time to enjoy it before proceeding to cook the next type of cuts. Because of that, each bite was juicy and not over cooked - I really appreciate that :) Overall - it was a great kbbq experience. I rate it 4/5 mostly due to the price. The marinated kbbq set was $129, including tax and tips will be approx. $80 per person, which is on the pricier end. To put it in perspective, Baekjeong is about $50-65 per person on average. Came here because this place always looked busy and had great reviews. Got sat in about 30 minutes. The place was packed so we were excited for great food. Most of the people were young, in their 20's/30's, and non koreans. It seemed like it was just the manager guy and one other server. They were frantically moving from table to table grilling meats. Service was slow, and when the manager finally came to take our order, he said to me in korean, " It's crazy in here. " The banchan came after a very long wait. Our group finished the banchan before the meats even came...so we asked the other server for a refill. He was obviously not happy, and shoved the serving tray to us asking us to put the banchan plates on it ourselves. When we started to put the empty and semi-empty plates there, he told us "No!,no! You want refill, take it off!" (He did not speak korean). So confused...we finally figured out that he wanted us to dump any remaining banchan onto our own plates so he could reuse those plates for a refill. Now that was a first....that has never EVER happened to me at a legit kbbq. That sh*t would never fly. Typically, when you get a banchan refilled, they bring you a new dish and then consolidate the remaning on to the new plate of banchan so it doesn't go to waste. I was not happy about the way refills were handled here. The meats were ok, but not prime enough to be at the price it was at. The manager would come by occasionally and speak to me in korean, and I politely responded back. Not sure if he felt that I was unhappy and wanted to make it up to us, but when we asked for the check, he asked us to stay for his famous steamed egg. He even gave us a free beer. Steamed egg tasted so burnt, it tasted like cigarette ash...and thats all I could think of because he frequently went outside to take a smoking break. Afterwards, the manager kept pointing to the QRcode asking us to please write a good review, and he kept flashing "finger hearts" at us (Ew). The bill was outlandish for the quality of food and service. It wasn't a great experience overall, and its definitely not somewhere you go for real korean bbq. A few days later, I noticed on my credit card statement that they charged the total amount as the tip, which doubled the amount I was charged. I called back to talk to the owner, and he immediately dismissed the call saying I got the 'wrong number' or that 'they're busy,' and hung up abruptly. We traveled from Brooklyn to Queens for the Korean bbq. Ssam Tong is located besides a couple of other Korean bbq spots, so we browsed the other locations before selecting Ssam. With the help of Yelp, and looking inside the restaurants (we looked for atmosphere, product, and just the overall enjoyment that other customers were having) we ultimately selected to try Ssam Tong. One of the best decisions we made today. It was a overdue date night, the restaurant provided an intimate setting, what is more romantic then sharing pork belly. The owner personally went around to cook the meats for the customers. It was warm and welcoming. The food also was delicious, pork belly crispy and crunchy on the outside and warm and oils ozzying on the inside. Tip: wrap the kimchi around the meats for the most flavorful bite. Also tried the sliced duck, and also the galbi. Galbi was amazing melt in your mouth. Service: the owner was attentive, warm and kind. We go to a lot of different places for Korean BBQ and this was a gem! The meat was excellent. We ordered a set with beef which included a prime steak--so tender, and juicy. That alone was worth the visit!. Pork belly was tender and flavorful. Banchan was generous (they gave us 2 sets for 5 people). Server was extremely helpful as one person had a food allergy and he guided us to safe choices. It was very busy but we had a reservation. Will come back soon! read more

BEST KBBQ I've had thus far!! I ordered the fresh cut pork belly, prime marinated beef combo, seafood pancake, tteokbokki, and tofu stew. The banchan/sides were delicious. I definitely recommend coming here and trying everything! The quality of meat is great and the flavors are exceptional! My only negative note is that the tofu stew was not very good. I usually love Korean tofu soup but this one did not hit the spot. It didn't come with a side of rice. (maybe tofu stew and tofu soup are different dishes? I'm not sure) The stew had such weird/different textures and flavors than what I'm used to that I didn't finish it, and I always finish food. BUT I STILL RATE THIS SPOT 5 STARS! I opted for soondubu, a tofu and seafood stew, an old favorite. First I was served banchan: fish cakes with a bit of carrot, kimchi, salad with a just-mild-and-sweet dressing, pickled white radish and pickled jalapeños, a nice green. My waitress gave me seconds on the fish cakes and the greens. Yum! The soondubu was hot, loaded with soft tofu, and seafood (could've used s bit more if it). Service was great, friendly and attentive. Good prices. Place is in tne middle of a bunch of restaurants within a three block radius. Ordered the prime boneless beef short rib and ribeye combo and added a pork belly since it's the name sake here, feelings were a little mixed but overall positive since the quality is here and the meat is fairly high quality. The pork belly was fantastic but it was unfortunately the best thing I ordered here which speaks to the quality of the pork here, but is a commentary on the beef. Beef here was high quality, but they did cook it a little too much / long here....... To me it's a heinious crime to cook quality beef well done..... But that was done here. Came by for a drink and cold buckwheat noodles! Even though it's June, they said they only served buckwheat in summer, and apparently June isn't summer. I'm not sure if it was because we came around 8pm that it was too late? (They opened until 11pm) Instead we ordered tofu with pork. First, I'm a Korean-American 90's baby, they're always playing my jam. I eat and heal after dinning here. I call it Ssam Tong magic. And the staff?... He's your brother from another mother, he knows meat, and he makes sure you having a good time. I see in most of restaurants, (as I also worked restaurant most of my life) good boss house good employees. They set up good examples and employees flourish. This place is terrible. The owner does not care about his customers. They speed cooked the beef for less than one minute each side so it was cooked rare. The pajeon and japchae were extremely greasy. We had 10 people, I asked for plates and he only gave 6 people plates. They charged 20% gratuity and included the tip within the subtotal so he charged tax on the gratuity amount. He paid us back in cash but he is sneaky and dishonest. The pajeon sauce is just watered down soy sauce. This place is not authentic Korean at all. Owner is also nicer to Korean customers. read more

My family decided to order a serving of pork belly, two orders of marinated kalbi, an order of bibim nengmyun, and two orders of haemul soondubu. Everything was subpar but the order of pork belly was huge. Not normal which was a good thing. The side dishes wasn't that great. I think they need to up the ante with that part. I really liked the service that was given to us so that is what gave it three stars. They were very attentive. Alright, let's get started on the many reasons why this place is 5 stars. I've had Ssam Tong in my bookmarks for awhile now & haven't been able to make it in until now. I've been to a few places in Flushing but nothing like this before. I showed up at around 9pm which was perfect because there were only 2 other parties inside. The place is pretty small so I can only imagine the wait times during the day getting up to 2 hours. This restaurant follows the Covid protocols like all of the rest. They check your temperature, enforce social distancing, provide hand sanitizer, & wipe down the tables after every party leaves. I was seated right away and asked if I wanted anything to drink. I went with the Black Raspberry Wine which was fantastic, a great start to the evening. It was sweet & not too strong so that I didn't get too tipsy before the food came out Now I always always ALWAYS start with the brisket, it sets the mood. I munched on the delicious fish cakes & kimchi while waiting. Not a lot of places have fish cake so this was a pleasant surprise. The brisket was a solid 8 out of 10, good but not my favorite. Would I order it again? Absolutely, especially when it was combined with the rice & sesame oil. The best thing though, the 10 out of 10 was EASILY the pork belly. Ordered the honey comb pork belly & then the waitress told me the regular pork belly is juicier so I should try that instead. You ALREADY KNOW I ordered both . Yes the regular cut was INDEED juicier but the flavor of the honey comb was out of this world. I don't know which I like more. The honeycomb MIGHT be the victor but them JUICES on the regular cut ahhhhhh so good. While I was eating the owner came over & gave me a tofu soup & steamed egg on the house. I usually order these anyway but I guess I forgot because I ordered so much already. Steamed Egg ALWAYS a classic & was extremely soft & delicious. The Tofu soup was great as well. The owner was the nicest guy & we chatted for a little while. Fantastic customer service, I haven't been treated this well at a restaurant in a LONG time. They really do make you feel like family. The Last few dishes were the deep fried dumplings, L.A. Galbi & grilled squid. The squid was great with some sort of sauce accompanying it. It was a tad bit spicy which gave it some added flavor. Now be warned, the L.A. Galbi was good, probably another 8 out of 10 but that is prepared in the kitchen not on your grill. Next time I show up I'll try the marinated short ribs which are prepared on the grill. The dumplings were amazing, I'm glad that I took these home to eat later because I was already stuffed at this point. Oh & the best part of the night was one of the waitresses was an elderly woman & she came over to the table & telling me to put the pork belly in a lettuce wrap . I was like ohhhhhhh I'm so sorry, let me make that right away ma'am. With service like this you already know you need to tip EXTRA so I did. This is the best restaurant experience I've had all year & it deserves great praise! Lastly when I was leaving the owner gave me a mango Korean rice beer to try ON THE HOUSE AGAIN!!!
