Good selection of vintage and consignment finds. You'll have to do some sifting, but the heart knows what it wants and I feel like it'll take no time to spot something that's uniquely you. I left with a bag full of stuff, which included cute party dresses, for less than $70. My most favorite buy is probably this cropped blazer that could work as a cover-up for more formal events and go just as easily with jeans for a lazy Sunday brunch. This gem cost $12! The condition of the items can mostly be described as gently worn. With a few exceptions, St. Vincent de Paul's clothing and accessories definitely show signs of use, though never abuse. Prices from what I saw ranged between $8 and $15, not bad. Add this to your Austin shopping itinerary if you love thrifting and want a good selection to choose from. read more

Love, Love, Love this place!!! I got some GREAT kids' clothes here today for my 10 year old. They were having a 50% off sale, too, so we got 2 pairs of jeans, 3 skirts, 2 pairs of shorts, and 4 shirts for only 12 bucks. It was ridiculous. The service was great. They explained all the different colored tags for me. There were lots of cool clothes for the adults too, but I wasn't shopping for myself today. But I promise, after just seeing what I could catch a glimpse of at the check out!!! I WILL BE BACK! Parking was tough to get out of, but I managed. Very good clothing selection & pretty decent shoes selection--and all for charity! I got a great pair of 5" heels here that appear to have never been worn, and at a great deal because all shoes were 50% off that day. This is my favorite thrift store in all of Austin for many reasons. Big points: 1) Close to my house. Could walk there if I wanted. 2) Organized well. Major plus. 3) Actually has nice wares. Some vintage and hipster finds. Lots of name brands. 4) Cheap. Cheaper than most. 5) Most importantly, good cause. CHARITY! Downside: Hours. I am only ever able to make it there on Saturdays, which are always their busiest days (never overly crowded though). They are also closed on Sunday, FYI. read more

I used to love St. Vincent. Back in 2004 when I first moved to Austin I found some really unique art work here. They were huge canvas's that were screen printed with designs that looked like they were from the 60's. I paid .50 cents for each one. They were about 4X4 ft large. I will always love this store because of that. However....I went in here this week expecting to find some great find like that again. Instead I was rushing through because I hated the way it smells down stairs. Like a dirty bathroom and diapers. There were people with theirs kids pulling stuff down everywhere. The purses and boots were 50% off that day. Nice. So I find a really cool purse that I think I'll get. Then I look at the price. It was originally $30. This purse was not worth that. Upstairs is all the VHS's, tapes, furniture, etc. There are some cool things up there if you have time to really look around. This time there wasn't much. I know thrift stores fluctuate. Sometimes they have really cool stuff and sometimes they don't. I think this was just a "they don't" day because I'm fighting the urge to rate it lower than 3 stars...but I won't do it.... This place is decent. Here are the facts... Store is split up in two sections - vintage/trendy/new in the front and old/not-so-great in the back. That makes things easier for me! There is a fair amount of parking on the side of the building free of meters (Yesssss!). I've always found parking. They have a decent selection of items in fair shape but the shoes aren't so great. The staff is always nice. The last time I went, there were a bunch of 13 year old boys working but they were so sweet and very helpful. It's not the greatest place I've ever been in but it's decent with ok prices. I do find one or two really cool items every time I go and I make a point to stop every time I'm in austin. I have purchased some of the best coffee table books and sit down readable books ever... here in this small little resale shop. As an avid, thrift store JUNKIE... I look for good buys. I can spot something of value from a mile away. Although I have never gone in here and found top notch designer wear, I have however, been pleasently suprised with the sales they have. If you are lucky, you might walk into a 50% off all clothes sale... or a buy one get one free.... The ladies here are so sweet and nice. They work very hard to try and keep that place in tip top shape... I also have to recommend the furniture section where they have some great finds for super cheap prices... If you drive down Congress, certain days you will see their back parking lot FULL of donation items that will be priced and placed into the store.... I would suggest visiting the day after you see this as they usually have a sale or even two days later have a new lot of items to sell.... St. Vincent de Paul... I love you. read more

This place is amazing! I really liked the fact that they have two levels. First floor: clothing and shoes. Second floor: furniture and housewares. The prices were super inexpensive. I saw drinking glasses for 25 cents and night stands for $14. They were running a 50% off special on lamps. Again, I did not have time to check the clothing for I was on a mission to find housewares. They have a large parking lot to the side if you cannot find space in front of the store. The staff was very friendly and courteous. They go the extra mile and make small chit-chat. The location is super but the only downside is they close at 5 pm. read more

I stopped in today just to kill some time and walked out with a paper sack full of clothing (mostly vintage) for $7.57. I don't know if it's because it's near Halloween, but the sweet spot was a small rack in the back of the store full of vintage dresses, coats, tops, and skirts for no more than $2 each (some tags were 50% off on top of that!). I passed up a Christian Dior night gown for $6, but other than that, didn't find much in the rest of the women's section. I did find a few cheap crafty items in the back: 2 bags of vintage-looking lace trim ($0.30), a spool of gingham ribbon ($0.25). By this time my arms were so full of treasures, that I didn't even make it to the second level! I'm definitely adding this place to my list of cheap thrift stores to frequent. read more

A great place to search for treasures. I don't understand my attendants attitude though. I was minding my own business when I was approached and offered help with a particular item. When I explained I use them in my business (which supports me) I felt an Icy chill run down my spine. Isn't the fact that I shop at your store supporting your charity? Guess what? I happened to come across this store strolling around South Congress with family and I am SO GLAD we walked in. They have a nice assortment of clothes that are all high-quality. There are two floors. First floor is women's and junior's? clothes, shoes, guy's clothes and some houseware stuff. The second floor is where most of the housewares are, furniture and lots of other miscellaneous (like games, vhs movies, etc.). This place was awesome. I spent way too much money on clothes I didn't need, but I got a LOT of clothes out of it (again.. that I don't need.. *sigh*). The prices do seem a little steep for a re-sale shop but apparently profits go to help the poor in Austin, so whatever.. I'm fine with that. Interestingly enough, this place is supposed to be a vintage shop, but I didn't see anything vintage. But that doesn't bother me! I found PLENTY to like anyway. If you're shopping for furniture or housewares, I'd go elsewhere. But for CLOTHING, these people rock! And for charity. :) Not as organized a search as some other thrift stores--you must be the diligent/pro type of thrift shopper (I am) to get out quickly--and not quite as cheap, but you can get high-end clothing here at a fraction of the cost of new, which is not true of the others. Often the clothing has NEVER been worn and expensive department store write-offs. They recently got a huge dump of Juicy Couture, among other brand names that actually fit. Also, my husband is 6'4" and thin: this is the only thrift store where he regularly finds clothing his size that's fitted instead of boxy, like cheaper brands tend to do when you're that tall. The high-end/dressy clothing section may cost an average of $30-50, but if you need a great dress or suit to wear to a wedding or something, these are truly classy finds. I don't consider that an outrageous price for how classy they are. Also you crafty folks: if into making tie dresses/skirts, your own jewelry from old jewelry, that kind of stuff: they've great discounted bags o' goodies for your use. read more

I have always wanted to go in this place. I was finally on South Congress the other day with some friends that were in town visiting so we thought we would drop in. When we go through the door a very surly looking gentleman states "we're closed". I stopped dead cause I was a little confused...it was about 5 minutes to 5pm and bright and sunny outside so I thought he was joking (also there was a second man standing next to him ginning like a fool just encouraging me further to think this was a joke). So I asked him "are you serious or joking?" because I know some people have a weird sense of humor. He told me he was not joking and that they are closed. Well ok then. I myself am a store manager of a boutique in town and my first thought is why close at 5pm when you are on one of the most high traffic shopping streets in town? Who thought that was a good idea? Does anyone running this place know anything about running a business? I realize it's for charity but if they stayed open later they would make way more money and it would completely be worth it. Great selection of clothing. Guaranteed to find some good scores here - sometimes even with the original tag still attached! Been here twice during my visits to Austin and have found Banana Republic blazers, J.Crew skirts, Anthropologie blouses, 7 for All Mankind Jeans, and random brands with great styles, and have also found some great vintage stuff too. Whoever sorts through the clothes and decides what to sell knows what they're doing. Prices are great. Honestly, this is probably one of the best thrift stores I've ever been to. A few years ago, I scored a bunch of old Bill Cosby comedy records in good condition here. More recently, I spied a vintage 70s Christian Dior shirt. And last year, all I got was a silk shirt. This year, I got nothing. Zip. Nada. I did see an overpriced ragingly fake Chanel bag that some poor soul will probably mistake for the score of a lifetime. The clothing was mostly picked over or in a messy pile being sorted. They got rid of most of the LPs upstairs, and I only found about 20 Montovani LPs that are in every thrift store in every city. This is the most incredible and phenomenal hidden treasure mountain!!!The new store location on Braker is enormous and even more packed with treasure and beautiful cheap things than the former locale on South Congress. Much much less expensive than Goodwill and Salvation Army. The new location also has a healthy cafe and a food bank to serve the poor. Very happy I came. read more

I was not very impressed with this thrift store. Maybe my idea of thrift is different, but this did not fit into my mold. Thrift to me is a "thrify" buy. When a store sorts thru the clothing and puts the "better" items on their own rack, and ups the price, I lose interest. Why not keep the in and out approach? Clothing in, sell it and move it out. This keeps the inventory fresh. I saw a few cute things, but nothing I wanted to spend $10 or more on. Sorry yelpers. The only thing cool about this store is that it is for charity. read more

So I was all set to hate this store. It doesn't look too cool from the outside, lets be honest, but inside. Oh jeez. I was 20 minutes late for a meeting and couldn't for the life of me pull myself away. Really awesome tops and dresses and jackets. Funky and cool and could beat the pants off of the other vintagey shops. I'm a thrift girl all the way. Next time, me and the St. Vincent shop are going to spend some serious quality time together. I'm not a fan of driving waaaayyyy south to go thrifting. Mainly because I never seem to have enough luck to justify driving all over south Austin when I have my favorite Goodwill so much closer to home. However, sometimes you just wanna see what's up on South Congress and eat a yummo cupcake and or slice of pie, in either order, and maybe, just maybe find a little gem at St. Vincent's or Parts and Labour. So thanks to previous Yelp reviews, I took a little trip and SCORED!! Oh baby, I LOVE my super-sassy, vintage black leather belt with gold tiger head-$3.50! Are you kidding me? Didn't find anything else that day, but totally justified for my bad-ass belt. I don't think I'll ever score like that again, but I'll definetely drop in on my next field trip. read more

St. Vincent separates the good clothes from the ugly so you don't have to walk far from the door or touch raggedy rags. The good clothes previously were sold in malls, probably. The raggedy rags were sold in malls too, but ten years earlier. I found an H&M dress for $18 that still had the original tag of $40. Do St. Vincent pricers think this is reasonable or are they exploiting this town's lack of H&M? I won't dwell on my conspiracy theories, but some items have steep prices. My boyfriend has good luck here, so the men's selection may be better. Or maybe they carry a lot of sport coats and pearl snap shirts. read more

ugh. i am new to austin & am struggling to find thrift stores within biking distance. this is the only authentic thrift shop i've been to in austin. it is authentic, cos it is gross. the clothes are ugly, & not in a trendy way, & the floors look dirty. i sighed a sigh of relief when i found it. then i experienced it. they have a KILLER knick~knack/furniture section upstairs, but the downstairs...ugh. overpriced & dirty. overpriced for NO REASON. seriously. but if you like a good ironic christianity-related t-shirt, you will probably have great luck here! read more

First time shopping at the location on Braker Lane. I was surprised by the size of the store, boutique feel and amount of merchandise. HOWEVER... the staff was unfriendly, the fixtures and furniture were difficult to move between and lots of items were marked not for sale. Specifically there was a rack of plants at one of the entrances marked not for sale, in fact this was the first thing we noticed walking into the store and set the tone for the entire trip. There was furniture in the window marked not for sale then by the records there was a picture frame with writing on it (they used it as a sign) but it also said $1. We have another one so my husband asked if it was for sale since it had a price but was being used... the employee got snippy and said, no that's our sign. Then walking up to the checkout there was an awesome American flag that we wanted to get to use for our business but it was not marked with a price so we didnt ask, we figured it belonged to the store but who knows maybe it was merchandise. I grew up shopping at the location on S Congress so I had high hopes for this location since it's by my house and we go thrift store hopping regularly. We won't be back for a while. read more

Been shopping at St V's since 1990. I loved it then and I'm obsessed now... I rarely actually like let alone say I love stores/businesses in Austin, St. Vincent's DuPaul Thrift Store is the BEESSSSSTTTTTTT thrift store in town!!! While a lot of folks' review talk about their great prices, kool finds and other qualities of the store, few actually know that the money from sales (and the donations) this thrift store makes/receives really does go directly back into the community in a positive and tangible way. St. Vincent's proceeds and donations helps folks and families in need pay something towards their utilities to get them back on or keep them on. With a voucher, folks who need nice clothes for job interviews or one of the jobs programs can come in and select a few items for those very reasons. Not to mention that the employees checks are paid from the sales... To me that says/means a lot more than those other places that claim to be about community and giving back when all they are trying to be are overpriced boutiques (SA and GW) that sale used stuff. also. I don't shop at malls or department stores every! I sew, so 95% of clothes I don't make for myself I get from St. Vincent's. Shoes too! They have designer shoes for $4-$8/pair. Often brand new or barely worn. Their color tag specials hurt my feelings ---Cuz every time I go in there are just too many good things to buy on the budget I have to set for myself when I go. They've got the best selection of jeans, coats, shoes, belts, vintage wear and blouses! At the best prices!!!! On my last visit I spent $64. That got me 7 pairs of (designer shoes), 5 pairs of dress/business slacks, a perfect winter coat, genuine leather jacket -- green and a couple of other things. I got all that in the 25 minutes I had to shop cuz I got there just after 4:30pm. St V's closes at 5pm... The household goods section of the store is just as good. I like that they'll hold your purchases for a day or so just in case you don't have a vehicle big enough to take them with you that moment. This is a perfect for me since I ride the bus... When we shop at St. Vincent's we're helping them take care of folks in our community who need help as well as sustain local jobs. The one issue I have with St. V's is their hours. Way back in the day they use to be open until 5:30pm then several years ago they went to closing at 5pm. WTH?!!! Why do they close at 5pm even on a Saturday knowing most people don't get off work until 5pm and have no time/way to shop there if you're stuck at work till 5pm everyday. Without fail, every time I leave the store (20 minutes after closing) there's always 3-5 people trying to come in to shop (usually for the first time) but to their dismay they didn't realize/think a retail store actually closes at 5pm. Maybe if we all ask at the same time they'll stay open at least another 30 minutes. I gave 4 stars cuz there's always room for improvement. read more
