I was staying at a hotel nearby and decided to try this place for breakfast today since the pictures looked so good. However, i was really disappointed. We got there and there was a line (which was not a big deal. It went by fast). So we sat down and i asked one of the waitresses if she could turn the outside heater lamp on and she said "sorry that one doesn't work." I asked if they could roll one of the other ones over and she said "well they're too hot to move". So we got up and moved to another table. The waitress tried to turn it on and after 2 seconds said "sorry doesn't work." And walked away. A waiter came by and did the exact same thing. My dad then got up and tried it himself and after a minute it turned on. So finally the food came. I ordered the bacon and eggs with a side of 3 pancakes. It was so disappointing because it looked like something i could've made at home. Nothing spectacular. It tasted alright. Same goes for the pancakes. Nothing to die for. All in all, not the best experience food wise and definitely not the best service. Food wasn't great and staff was pretty rude and dismissive. Sadly won't be returning here. Quite honestly, IHOP would have been a better option. read more

YUMMY!!!! We were in Dana Point for Whale Watching and came by for brunch before we headed out to sea. This place is so cute and close to the water. We parked above the strip and walked down the stairs to a cute patio. Inside was cute and cozy and the line wasn't too long. We ordered Coconut Pineapple Pancakes, Captain Crunch Peanut Butter French Toast, Eggs Benedict and California Benedict to share. The food was excellent. My fave was the California Benedict with Tomato and Avocado. The service and food were excellent. This is an order at the counter and seat yourself place, and pretty casual. Next time, I getting the Captain Mac Nut!! Captain Crunch Macadamia Nut French Toast!! The prices are very reasonable and everything is very appealing. Can't wait to come back!! read more

this place is on the PCH and if your not looking for it you might miss it! the food was very good it was better than average and decently priced for an order and sit restaurant. I had eggs Benedict and it was very good the hollandaise was done correct I could have used a bit more but it worked how they served it. the home fried potatoes were huge I had to cut them in half to eat them. but the were seasoned well and I didn't have to add salt or pepper. My com padres had the Calif Benedict with tomato and avocado and home fried potatoes last we had a California Omelet cooked to perfection and served hot. The omelet was fluffy and wrapped around bacon, Swiss and avocado with a side of fruit. it had no pan marks either. the service was fast and courteous. we ate inside which if i had thought about it we would have eaten on the patio. I tried the Cap' Crunch French Toast (without macadamia nuts) and it was really good! Crunchy on the outside with a soft/gooey center. You can try it with coconut or boysenberry syrup on the side. Best breakfast spot in the area. We stop here to meet up before riding Ortega Highway, and it's just perfect. I love the eggs Benedict, the bacon is great, bottomless coffee, all around it's 5 stars. Service is incredible every time. Smiles at the counter, and someone came around to refill coffee probably 4-5 times while we were eating. Been 3 times and this is the experience each time. Add some Strawberry's, real butter, quality syrup and a dash of powdered sugar and you got one happy El Capitan! A must try! Had the over easy eggs w/perfectly marinated and tender Korean Kalbi and the flavor packed fried rice. The table next to me are regulars and brought first timers also. They kept raving about the fried rice too! Come here for breakfast or brunch if you are in the OC. Come early coz the line is out the door. Don't be discouraged the line moves quick. There is seating with heat lamps outside coz its limited space inside. Park in the structure above the restaurant and take a short 2 flights of steps to the front. Satisfied customer. I've got a 'thing' for crunchy French toast. So when I read about Stacks Pancake House I got pretty excited. Unfortunately it was a big let down! I had conjured up images of a very friendly place where pancake and French toast lovers would come to relax and savor the best meal of the day. Not at all, in fact, it's down right un-relaxing! It's one of those places where you order and pay first, then first-come first-served on the limited tables. Sure, there's a shared sidewalk patio area but when the weather isn't right... good luck! Anyway, 'Pancake House' is kinda misleading if you ask me. Really they serve a little of everything for breakfast and lunch. Of course I ordered the Captain Crunch & Mac Nut French Toast. Again..... disappointed. It was undercooked, kinda soggy in the middle. All the French toast is made with Hawaiian sweet bread. Adding the Captain Crunch to that just puts the sweet level way over the top for me. The service is a real rush-rush, we gotta get your outta here experience too. To sum it up... the place just doesn't do much for me. Definitely not worth any kind of journey out of your way to come here. I think ratings are relative to their locale... nothing special here but a decent breakfast in Dana Point is not a trivial search. Finding anything with flavors or spices in Dana Point is work. Apparently this is the land of white food eaters and flavorphobes. Stacks' menu has something for everyone. I had the kalua pork omelet. It was good, the pork was tender and moist, but overall the omelet was mostly just big and warm. Homefries were hot and crispy and bland. I brought my own Peet's. I don't trust breakfast spots for coffee very often. Obviously the locals love it. We got there before 8am and if we hadn't, we probably would have had a good wait for some of the limited indoor seating. I think if I lived in Dana Point, I'd cook my own breakfast 90+% of the time. But to each their own. Stacks is a good choice in a tough market that seems to dumb down all its offerings for over-delicate tastebuds. read more

My husband and I made our way up to Dana Point to catch the ferry to Avalon, but I wanted to go really early to eat breakfast and walk around the beautiful city. Once we got to Dana Point, I immediately checked Yelp to find the closest pancake spot and alas, we found Stacks! Stacks is such a cute little restaurant. There is outside seating which is helpful since it's pretty small inside. The staff were so friendly and accommodating! I ordered a latte and it was really good. My husband and I ordered their combo that comes with a stack of pancakes. My husband had the hash and I turkey sausage.... Or was it bacon? The pancakes were truly the star of the show. They were so fluffy and melted like butta'. Ooh, and they give you a whole condiment cup of butter. Like every remarkable breakfast spot, Stacks get very crowded, very fast! This was a no for me. The coffee was too bitter and their gluten free pancakes were not flavorful and very tasteless. They don't give enough butter for the pancakes so we had to ask for more. Everything tasted very basic nothing to want to come back for again. read more

Just left Stacks and will never ever return. Stacks literally stole $13 from me. My wife and I were there Father's Day morning at 7:35 am and ordered a short and regular stack of buttermilk pancakes, what we got was a plate of the toughest pancakes I ever had put in front of me. They do not know how to cook there. The pancakes also had a tough ring around the outside that I couldn't cut with a knife. Not to worry I've already started spreading the word about this fraud in Dana Point, starting at the Ralph's down the street. My wife and I decided to try this place based on the reviews. The first thing we saw was an ominous line out the door. Don't let this sway you. It moves ok and you'll have your food right after. We were not disappointed. I had the loco moco with sausage and inhaled it. I think the sausage is the way to go versus a hamburger, adds light spice and smokiness. Stacks is a busy place. I felt fortunate to have found a table right as we arrived, because 20 minutes later, it was SRO! My wife and daughter like pancakes. They both had short stacks of buttermilk pancakes and a side of two egg whites. I ordered scrambled eggs, sausage and home fries. All that, a large OJ and a cup of coffee, $25 and change. Girls both enjoyed their pancakes, neither could finish the short stack. My entree was fine, there was a disturbing crunch of what may have been bone in one of the sausages, they appeared to be Farmer John's brand, can't blame the restaurant for that. Bottom line, this was just an OK experience, don't really know why they are so busy, I would have rather gone to Proud Mary's in the harbor, but we have been seeing the crowded patio at Stacks for a few years and wanted to give it a shot. From the outside, there's nothing too special about Stacks.It's in a strip mall, there's no view of anything except the street, it's small and the entrance is also under major construction. That being said, the service is friendly and you can pick up a Hawaiian style breakfast. I had Spam and eggs and a short stack. My buddy had Portagee sausage and eggs with two scoop rice. You can also order a loco moco. There are other drinks and snacks to get your Hawaii fix on. I liked the pancakes. Which is a good thing because this place is named Stacks. This was my first time here and I was WOWed! I had the garden crepes. They were delicious! My friends had: the breakfast melt, chocolate pancakes and eggs and the spicy chicken and bacon waffles. This place was amazing. Somewhat of a wait at 9:30 on a Saturday morning, but that's how we knew it was going to be good. It's basic breakfast fare. You wait in line, order at the counter, find a seat (either in the small inside or on the patio) and then you wait for your delicious pancake goodness to be brought to you. I had been craving French Toast and my husband wanted a waffle -- and both were really tasty, but we made the brilliant decision to also order a short stack of blueberry pancakes on the side and they were hands down the best. If you are staying at the nearby St. Regis resort, this a quick drive away and so much better than their $22 French Toast. Actually we ate 2 meals with coffee and the extra pancake stack for less than my French Toast over at the St. Regis would have cost. read more

The food here is excellent. I had the veggie omelette with the short stack of pancakes, which totals around $8. You can also add avocado to your omelette for $1 more, and the avocado is fresh and large but you have to spread it yourself. I would not recommend the short stack of pancakes if you are ordering plain buttermilk pancakes, however, as it's $5 or $6 when you can just get an omelette for $7-$8 which comes with that short stack anyways. I also liked how quick this shop was - you choose your table after you order, and you pay up front and they brig you food. It's more like a Farmer Boys than an iHop in that sense. I also found that the staff tended to be very communicative with locals more as opposed to new customers. The store was also organized in a way where it was hard to find a place to read a menu without seeming like you were in line to order food, and one of the staff members was not too friendly about it, which I was not a fan of. Overall if you make going to this place a habit, you will probably like the service a lot, but if you just go once, it will probably be just for the food. Which was good. And cheap. I ordered the Eggs Florentine Benedict (with spinach and tomato) and a house brewed coffee. It was a Friday morning, but this place was packed. Regardless, service was very fast! I ran my knife through the egg and a creamy yolk mixed with the hollandaise sauce...mmm. What a steal for ~$8. The house brewed coffee was also delicious (I'm really curious to find the brand) and the staff was kind enough to give me some soy milk and offer refills. The only complaint I have is that the potatoes were on the salty side, but I don't think that would bother the average customer. Oh, and maybe you could toast the english muffin to give it more texture. FYI: I stress that this is a nice family friendly CASUAL spot. Some of the other reviewers are being way to harsh about the seating arrangement. Be patient and a table will open up/get cleaned. Also, bring a hat just in case you have to sit outside. The bf and I adore this place. Our favorite thing to do is phone in our order and go down to the beach. The portions here are pretty sizable. We usually order a bacon and cheese omelet and chose a pancake instead of toast. Their pancakes are fluffy and delectable. Definitely a must try. I like to put their coconut syrup on them. Went to Stacks a few weeks ago. We were driving by and looking for a place to get breakfast and noticed a grand opening sign at Stacks. So we decided to give it a try. It was packed, but we were able to find a seat. I ordered apple wood smoked bacon, scrambled eggs and pancakes. Bacon and eggs were good but the pancakes were to die for!! You could smell them coming (smelled like cake baking). They tasted like cake too! The taste was a little different then the normal pancake but it was a great taste! My brother ordered a California omelet which he said was really good. It also came with pancakes. Food was great and prices were decent. I tried Stacks for breakfast while staying at the $600/night, Dana Point Ritz-Carlton. I paid $32 for bacon and eggs at the Ritz the morning before, and wanted to save some money by eating out. The staff recommended Stacks and since it was only a short drive from the hotel, I decided to try it. The price is a third of what the Ritz-Carlton charged for basically the same thing, but I was really disappointed at the skimpy-looking scrambled eggs with Portuguese sausage that I had ordered. Worst of all, everything was REALLY SALTY. Before tasting my scrambled eggs, I sprinkled a little bit of salt on them, but it seemed that the cook already salted it! What kind of cook, and why would a cook do that? I wonder if it was because I did not leave a tip on the credit card when I originally placed my order? (I didn't tip because it was a "to go" order). Whatever the reason, it was inedible. In the end, although the Ritz-Carlton charges $32 for breakfast, I admit that theirs was some of the best tasting hash browns that I have ever tasted! Stacks had some interesting lunch items on their menu that I wouldn't mind trying , but breakfast, never again. read more

We came with our son to enjoy some breakfast. We had finished eating when my husband went inside to get more coffee, and order to go. While he went inside to get a refill a group of people came and were irritated at the fact that they couldn't find a table for their party of 8. There was another party of 8 at a table next to us, and they were waiting for them to leave but instead wanted us to leave even though my husband went to go get a coffee refill and order more food. One of the staff came said we couldn't stay at the table we were already at, even though we just finished and were waiting for coffee and more food. We usually come here every once in awhile, but with the rude lady, I don't think we'll ever be back. My husband even went inside to get a refund for the food we were waiting for. read more

I came in for breakfast and ordered a loco moco and a short stack of pancakes. The egg was cooked just how I like, over easy. The rice and gravy were just fine. I would order extra gravy next time because I like rice with my gravy. The hamburger patty was tough and somewhat flavorless so I'll probably order with spam next time. I didn't see it on the menu but I asked if they had spam musubi. The girl at the register didn't even recognize the words. "Uhm you want a side of spam?" Uh... No.... Never... Mind?
