After a few hours of thrift shopping with friends we were ready to rest tired feet and feed our tummies. We chose to sit outdoors since there were two fur babies with us. I enjoy going to cafes and trying out their meals. I find that most cafes serve mediocre coffee. That was different here, the coffee was pretty darn good. For my meal I selected the Chicken Fried Steak, request that my eggs be cooked over easy, hash brown be extra crispy and with white toast. I did forget to ask the gravy be served on the side because I would like the steak to remain crispy. I usually eat slow, but this time I was pretty hungry which didn't allow the fried steak to become soggy. Everything was delicious! Even the gravy which wasn't the typical looking gravy that I'm used to being served. It was creamy with great flavor. The chicken friend steak was fried to perfection. It was a bit on the windy side sitting outside. I ordered to a chai tea latte to go. It was very good, the spices were robust, but a nice balance. The service was great and fast. I cannot believe this was our first time here! San Clemente is our go to staycation destination and in all the times we've stayed here this was our first time trying Sunrise Cafe. Boy, have we been missing out! Parking is located in the back of the strip of businesses. They do have an entrance in the back that leads you directly inside the cafe. We walked around the front and greet immediately upon entering. There was seating inside and out, we opted to sit outside because the weather was perfect. Service was great! From the host, to server and bus guy. Everyone made our experience exceptional from start to finish. Their menu is big enough to have something for everyone. We tried a bit of everything: French toast, veggie omelette, machaca burrito and plate. The food was phenomenal! The extra crispy hashbrown is making me crave another staycation lol. all in all, we had a great experience at Sunrise and will definitely be back. read more

This was my first visit to Sunrise Cafe. I decided to be healthy, so I ordered an omelette with green and red peppers and avocado. I ordered cottage cheese and fruit as my sides. The omelette was very good - light and fluffy. After a few bites, however, I noticed that they had left off the avocado. It took a while to flag someone down to get that corrected. And, it took just as long to get someone to refill my coffee. And, to get the check. And, I had to get a to-go box myself. The restaurant was not busy, so there was no excuse for such inattentive service. I would consider returning because the omelette was unusually good. Sunrise Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot in town. I eat out a lot and have been to every place in San Clemente the last 14 years. Chen and her friendly crew have the greatest customer service coupled with the best quality food & largest portions at the lowest prices in town. My favorite dish is the bacon, avocado & cream cheese omelette with jalapeños, hash-browns with ketchup and fresh brewed coffee that you sip from a porcelain mug. Been going here for years and the girls there were fantastic but today some ding-a-long blond mid aged woman waited on us and took over 30 minutes to even take our order and served a woman and teen who came in 10 minutes after us! From the initial greeting from Chen, the owner, to Leslie our server, and to our bus person, the people interaction was amazing. What a fabulous find. We had time to spare while waiting for our tire change at Holley's Tire Service, and this place is just 3 blocks up the street. It is unpretentious, not super trendy. The menu is excellent, something for everyone. We had 2 coffees, 2 bagels w/cream cheese, side of home fries, and a side of fresh fruit. The bill was $34.48. Went in with a group, we were seated around 11:15 am, we were sat in the back corner. About 10 minutes went by and they brought menus, then we placed our order and sat there for over an hour, they refilled our drinks once and proceeded to tell us they put our ticket in front of everyone else when they finally noticed we hadn't received our food, multiple tables of similar size that were sat after us were served 15-20 minutes before us. Will not be returning, the good reviews of how good the food is isn't enough to wait over an hour to try it. read more

This is very much a classic diner the food is quick to arrive delicious and well prepared and almost so beautiful to look at but you feel bad eating it... You stop feeling bad after the first bite then you start to feel wonderful thinking that there's no possible way you could ever put an end to this joy. 5/15/22 Ventured out to San Clemente for breakfast fare once again, hubby's search, not from Yelp. This will determine if I'll keep allowing him to pick our food destinations. Read the Yelp reviews, it sounded promising. One Yelper said the coffee is really good & another Yelper said the onion rings are too. Had to try the banana flavored pancakes & made it a combo with over medium eggs & crispy bacon. Hubby of course ordered the chorizo burrito with home fries. I was expecting it to be packed at a few minutes before noon on a Sunday according to the reviews & the wait would've been just as horrendous. Well, amazingly the busboy seated us right away as soon as we walked in. It was super loud indoors so we opted to sit outside, on the side of the main street, El Camino Real. In hindsight, we should've opted yo sit on the quieter side on Mariposa. What I didn't expect is having to wait for a server to acknowledge us for about 20 minutes after being seated. My husband flagged the busboy down twice to get our orders taken or have a server come by. It's been a while since I've been at a place that I felt unwelcome or unappreciated. I felt like walking out. Gave them a chance since hubby was willing, usually he'd be the first one to say "Let's go". I understand when places are either slammed or understaffed. When the server, Leslie, finally arrived to take our orders, no apologies, just straight to proceed to take our orders. It took 25 minutes for our food to arrive. At least the pancakes were good, the bananas were actually cooked into the batter, the way it should be. These were soft fluffy pancakes & served piping hot which is the only reason they got a 3rd star. I was going to leave it at two stars if it weren't for the pancakes. Coffee was decent, not stellar. Hubby was disappointed in the chorizo, he said it tasted like canned corned beef. The onion rings weren't as good as expected. I told hubby that Carl's Jr had much better onion rings. These were a bit on the soggy side & it tasted like the batter wasn't really cooked fully, I could taste the flour. Almost forgot, hubby got hash browns instead of the home fries like he ordered. At least this was fixed right away. No one came around to refill my coffee, had to flag someone to refill it. It is as if we we're forgotten that we're customers that needed to be tended. Not the best experience & it isn't a place we'd be willing to try again. That's it for hubby making recommendations on our food adventures. Good basic go-to diner for breakfast and lunch. We came later, so it wasn't too crowded. Staff was friendly and food came fast. Looked like regulars were there too, which is a good sign. We both had a hankering for chorizo so my husband ordered the chorizo scramble, and I ordered the chorizo omelette. The difference? Mine had jalapeños, and I didn't expect them to put a lot, and it turned out to be super spicy!! It was very tasty, but hot enough, I decided to pack the rest home...will fry it up tomorrow with extra eggs to take spice level down, lol! Both came with toast and home fries (which was more like fried potato slices), and we ordered a coffee and tea. After going to the car show nearby, we were trying to find a cheap brunch place to get food and didn't want to go somewhere in the same shopping plaza. Thinking that it wouldn't be as crowded, we trekked a couple miles further away. Bad idea. This place probably was even more busy because it was a weekend brunch AND price point was much cheaper than other places in the area. We had to park in the residential neighborhood and walked there. We also thought that ordering to go would speed things up, it unfortunately did not. Took anywhere from 20-30 minutes to get our food (1 sandwich and onion rings). We got the: 1) Turkey Melt: -It was nice that it was cheesy and had some jalapeno peppers in it to add some spiciness. -The sandwich itself had a decent amount of turkey. -We asked them to cut the sandwich in half but it ended up being an uneven split, so it was a bit unfair sharing this with a friend. 2) Onion Rings: -Decently okay. -The breading was uneven on the rings and slipped off the onions. -I'd get the fries next time if I had to. I'm sure on less busy days, it might be more worth it, especially with more of their popular breakfast dishes, but my experience was just alright. read more

The wife and I were running some early errands and decided to stop in and have some breakfast. I am a fan of breakfast burritos and still looking for the replacement of the best ever breakfast burrito from the now closed "The Grill" in San Clemente. Server, I believe it was Janna, came out quickly (we were sitting at the outside tables) to give us menus and she took our drink orders. Very nice and friendly. After the drinks came out and we reviewed the menus we were ready. So, we both ordered breakfast burritos. Me = Chorizo for $15.95. The Wife: Sausage for $13.00. Pricey for a breakfast burritos but with the awful inflation it's expected at this time. Food did not take very long to come out and it was nice and hot. See pictures I remembered to take after we started eating. The burritos were a very good size and looked great. My chorizo was very tasty and all in all a solid breakfast burrito. Not the best I have had, but I would come back and order it again. The wife liked her sausage breakfast burrito but could not finish one half, so she took home a full half and what she had left from first half. I only finished one half of my burrito and got to enjoy it the next morning. As I said, I would come back and try other items as the burritos were well made and I would expect other dishes to be done the same. Go. Eat Well. Have Fun! read more

Came on a Sunday morning, always expecting it to be busy. Got seated outside on the sidewalk, a little uneven but we made it work. Friendly waitstaff. Inside was packed! The menu is huge and seeing other customers food, everything looked great. Ordered the huevos rancheros, corned beef hash with eggs and hashbrowns and a side of the biscuits and gravy. I would have loved to give these guys 5 stars, but the food is just not good. We got the chorizo eggs and the machaca eggs. It reminded me of your cafeteria from grade school. You have to eat the food and don't have a choice in the matter. It's too bad they are subpar since they seem to have a local following. Maybe it was a replacement cook? But it was NOT GOOD. We stopped on our way back to LA from Oceanside and we are so glad we did! Ordered their breakfast tacos and their French toast combo, as well as much needed coffee. Call me a cynic but I typically don't expect placed like this to have stellar coffee, just "regular". But Sunrise Cafe's coffee was amazingly strong and tasty! Whatever you guys are doing to get your coffee this tasty (the beans, the water, the coffee maker, etc.), keep doing it. Next up, their b'fast tacos... Wow, best b'fast tacos I've had in a very long time. Well seasoned, good quality and plentiful! I also had half of my wife's amazing French toast. Nice sweetness to follow the tacos!
