Well I had been here many years ago but had forgotten about it but when I saw Mike's YEU event Burger of the month I said hell yeah I'll go and this was the first event I had the opportunity to get to and do you think I will be going to more had a good time met new friends and most important for the people reading this review is the mushroom Swiss and bacon burger I had was absolutely delicious. I will be coming back along with the Richmond's Air Crew to introduce them to one of the best burgers in Houston. Stanton's is one of Houston's hole-in-the-wall joints serving quality wholesome and classic burgers. You won't find tiny gourmet burgers here. Pricing is fair, and fries are add-ons. Expect street parking, although it isn't on a very busy street so it shouldn't be a huge problem. The chipotle burger was very juicy and flavorful, and the sauce gave it a nice flare without overwhelming the patty taste. If you're craving burgers, this is the place. read more

We were really excited to try this place based on the reviews and It's hard to find a good burger joint in the heights area. We ordered two burgers, two beers and one fry with tip almost $50. The food came out it really lacked flavor. I requested for my burger to be prepared medium and at best it was medium well. My girlfriend's burger was way overcooked and she didn't say how she wanted it (and they didn't ask which is surprising) so I guess they make all burgers burn. We asked for some ranch to add flavor to the flavorless burger and cold fries, the guy (I'm guessing he was the owner) said ranch is 81 cents I said "yeah no problem", he just stood there staring me so I repeated "Can I get some ranch" and he repeated It's 81 cents so I give him a dollar and I asked him if it was homemade his reply was "no but everything cost" in a very rude way I was shocked. The ranch was absolutely disgusting it must have been the cheapest store-bought ranch you can get. We understand that every business has its bad days but the rudeness of the employees and flavorless food we won't be going back. The burgers are fantastic and messy, MESSY. They have a number of bottled drinks (non-alcoholic) from which to choose. I had a chardonnay with my burger...(one choice of white, one choice of red). It was NOT good, but I was not there for the wine. While the food is really something, staff is sort of stand-offish. I told the cashier it was our first visit, and that we were happy to try the food, and she was not amused....didn't care. Embarrassed, I shut up about it and ordered. You order at counter, they run your food. I had the bacon cheese burger, and my friend had the chili cheese burger (with caramelized onions, chili, habanero mustard, bacon.....YUM)and we split chili-cheese fries (HUGE). My friend's burger (meat) fell out upon first bite....but Chili burgers are hard to eat. Parking is scarce. Most of the tables were wobbly, so we just walked around until we found a sturdy one. I have been excited about trying this place for quite some time. But our schedules never seemed to line up when I was in the mood for a bigass burger. Mostly because they are closed on Sunday. The only bad thing you can say about this place is their "parking lot" has four spaces and if you are not one of those lucky truck drivers you will have to find a spot out in the neighborhood. Or throw caution to the wind and ghost ride the whip as you run in quickly to grab your order, pay, and run back to hop in the car before you have caused extensive property damage in a truly #YOLO fashion. Brunch Burger: mayo, mustard, BACON!, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, American cheese, FRIED PICKLES, FRIED EGG, and grilled onions on Texas toast. That is what it is. I am not sure how you can read that without conjuring the emotional sentiment of "America, fuck yeah!" in the back of your mind if you have ever had the pleasure of viewing the film Team America: World Police. This is basically a direct competitor to the Grim Burger at Lankford. It is a noble competitor. The fried egg is amazeballs. The fried pickles? Even better. The bacon is higher quality here than at Lankford. However at Lankford they literally give you a pound of it, so much it can't even sit on the burger and you have a burger piled high with bacon and another ten strips or so just having fallen off and resting in the basket below. Biting into the Brunch Burger is basically like a party in your mouth. The tastes, the textures, the juiciness. It all works. It is like a really cool party where everyone is being nice and respectful and talking about movies and films, not politics or anything that could create schisms. And nobody is drinking too much and urinating on the cat or in the flowerpot. It is a party that works. A grand party. Chili cheese fries: oh.my.glob. says Lumpy Space Princess. Best chili cheese fries I have ever had the chance to eat in Houston. They completely shame the chili cheese fries at Carl's Jr. and Sparkle and everywhere else that thought they stood a chance to compete with the way that Stanton runs this town. I won't libel them by claiming that they are trying to institute portion sizes, but the portion size of fries was a bit small. Daddy likes his fries. And just like the Jack in the Box on West Dallas @ Waugh, this one-size-only fry option (for their bacon cheddar fries) is not as large and in charge as one would like. The fries themselves are thick, not like steak fries, but thick for fries. Which I do enjoy. And they are not heavily salted, which is good. That lets the chili and the cheese stand out. Unlike Sparkle it is not just a melted wad of cheese. This is good cheese, blended in with chili. The chili is not super hot like I had wistfully hoped for. However the entire chili cheese concoction was something good like you could routinely expect out of a James Coney Island. You might wish for something hotter and spicier at the end of the day, but this is more than pleasant enough as it is. All in all: this place is awesome. It is a local business you can and should feel great about supporting. Very friendly customer service oriented place. Great, high quality (unhealthy) food for you to enjoy. It's a once a week kind of place, like Lankford, but it is a mighty fine choice. Just like The Refinery on West Dallas it is a definitely strong competitor to Lankford. And they take credit cards here. And allow phone-in take-out orders. And they are super friendly. But they do limit your portion sizes. Be warned if you have a Big Daddy appetite: you need two orders of chili cheese fries. If you have not ventured out here to try a burger and some fries you are missing out on something great. This is a definite must try, who doesn't love a converted convenience store filled with great decor, drinks, and food offerings! Like seriously if you are ever in need of pork skins they got you covered like bubba gump and shrimp: old fashioned pork cracklin strips, seasoned, chili cracklins, you name it! They also have a huge variety of drinks from Coke, Fanta, Sprite in the glass bottle (the good stuff), beers, all the Arizona tea flavors imaginable, to Aloe and Calypso Ocean Blue Lemonade for $2 and bottled water for $1. One word, BURGERS. Stantons is probably one of the best burger places in Houston They have a lot of options to choose from but their model replica of R2-D2 helped me finalize my decision to try the Luke Skyburger. OMG can I just say that was the best deep-fried bacon I've ever tasted! The batter on the bacon was super crispy, not as greasy as expected and loved that added crunch to each bite, yum! The patty was a 1/2 pound of beef patty, like real beef that was super flavorful, juicy, and delicious. The provolone cheese was perfectly melted and loved the fresh garlic sauteed spinach and grilled mushrooms. Daily serving of vegetables: check! I also tried a quarter of a club sandwich, this was a bit salty for my liking, so I would just stick to burgers. Our party also ordered a few of the better sides: curly fries, waffle fries, and tater tots. I thought the curly fries and waffle fries (think Chick fil a style) were ok as I like thinner cut fries but I would definitely recommend the tater tots! Each bite of the tots was super crunchy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, hard to explain so just try them! It's a family run business with the mother working hard to ensure the success of her late husband's dream. I think it is awesome that her daughter was also there to help out, you can really sense their closeness and you feel at home when you are here. So I've cut back on red meat intake a lot, there hasn't been as many steak reviews by me as there used to be but I still get my red meat fix via burgers from time to time. I enjoy fudruckers and the other chains as much as the next guy but I'd prefer a classic burger from a REAL grill. I came here on a weekend afternoon since I can't during the week. I really didn't know what to expect. The area is eh...weird but when I rolled up there were 2 brand new cars out front a BMW and a LEXUS, was taken a back. I entered and it looks like a convenience store with a small short order looking food counter to the right. I glanced over the menu and saw the specialty burgers. It's family owned and operated and they have been here a long time. Besides the husband and wife they have a cook. My gf and I ordered our burgers and fries and sat at the lone table inside while the food was being made. The burgers were yummy! meat cooked just right, I had an egg on mine and there's just something about eggs and burgers that seem so right. 4.5 Stars! I attended Chris C.'s UYE and was so glad I did. Upon entering Stanton's I saw our group happily eating these large yummy burgers and onion rings. So I met the Yelpers who I haven't met in person before (they were awesome BTW) and talked with the regulars. I followed the directions and got my drink and proceeded to the ordering line. All their burgers are 8oz with the exception of the Monster Burger II which is (2) 1/2lb patties with 1/4lb of bacon, 4 slices of cheese and other goodies. I ordered the Truck-Stopper which has cheese, crunchy thick bacon and one of their big ol onion rings plus the standard fix-ins. The tall guy taking the orders was super friendly and had very good customer service skills. What can I say other than my burger was perfect! Bun was char grilled inside and big enough to hold together without falling apart. I could taste the freshness of the hamburger meat which had a nice char on the outside and packed with flavor. The cheese, thick crunchy bacon and big fried onion ring really enhanced the hamburger without taking away or hiding the freshness. The lettuce, tomato and pickles all added another fresh dimension to my yummy burger with just the right amount of mayo and mustard. Perfection achieved!!! My taste buds were satiated! They have quite a variety of unique hamburgers to try so you won't be bored. I did have a problem though. Somehow one of the many chairs I sat in must have been really dirty because the butt part of my white jeans was full of grease and got real dirty. On a scale of one to...eleven (with ten being the best onion rings you could find), Stanton's weighs in a solid 9. That is an amazing feat. I'm hopeful I will one day find my eleven, but really with these rings, I wonder why I should even bother. Yes, THAT good. I'd been meaning to stop by here for roughly two years, and save my one failed attempt at walking out of the store with a burger, today was the first time I got food from here. It is really convenient to the downtown work set, but for others, it's a bit of a hike. Since they are open on Saturdays, my window of opportunity is slim. If you've driven down Houston Ave, you've seen this place. You (by "you," I mean me the first few times) may have thought it was just a part time, only open on the weekends antique shop from the outside, but inside it's a different story. It's an old store with hardwood floors, no windows, boxes and space in the far corners acting as storage, and a kitchen. Once you walk in the slightly hard to open heavy wooden door, you'll notice a counter with cooler on your right. It has been empty the two times I've been in, but perhaps during the weekday lunch slam, it is full of salads. Above it is a really neat hood that I'm certain at one time had working lights. This is where you order. Be careful that you go well before they close as they shut the kitchen down about an hour prior. It takes a while for your food, so you may just want to call ahead and order. I knew this was an option before I stopped by, but as I'd misplaced the menu, I thought I'd use it as an opportunity to wait ten minutes. Also keep in mind, this is a counter in a convenience store. This is a strictly To Go type of place. While you wait for them to make your food, wander the store/makeshift storage shop's other coolers for drinks. Sobe, Dr Pepper, water, a gallon of Strawberry Drink. Whatever you wish. They also have a few "I don't want to drive to the real grocer's" items. Soup, milk, juice, and such. Mostly the food is geared towards lunch accompaniments such as chips, ice cream, and small bags of Atkinson Candy Co. candy. (Chick-o-sticks, Peanut Butter Bars, etc). If the cute little convenience store with a burger counter, amazing onion rings, and hard wood floors isn't enough to make you want to come check this place out, do it for the family-esque customer service. We're always on the lookout for a great burger joint. Had heard about this place and finally was able to go. First off, I think some of the reviews might be dated, but they do have seating here. I talked to the owner when I was checking out and I think he said that it was seating like up to I think 40 people? Very casual picnic style seating with tables for 4-6 people but could be easily be pulled together. All the burgers sounded amazing and I ended up getting the Truck-Stopper which was super delicious. Taking a classic American burger and adding bacon and an onion ring - awesome. From the sides we got, my favorite was the tater tots (probably because we took our order to go and they were the ones that held up the best for "crispiness"; I bet the fries would be better hot and fresh before they got soggy from the heat in the containers). If you're taking to go, highly recommend calling ahead since they cook to order. The person on the phone was very helpful and patient with my 6 person order and when we got the order, everything was exactly right. It's family ran, which always gives me a warm and fuzzy that it's almost like my parents making a home-cooked meal for me. They were super sweet. So I have to confess that I am really late in trying out this place. I have been hearing about it for ever and ever. I ordered my order to go which was the PMS and the holy cow. I got myself sweet potato fries and french fries for the other order. The waitress/cashier at the register explained to me that I needed to order at the counter. It was a very greasy burger. The best of its kind. It really redefines the whole meaning of having a vegetarian burger. I really do not like burgers that pretend to make vegetarian burgers sound good like the boca burger. It actually aggravates me to no end. But the PMS is the portabella mushroom sandwich which is a heaven sent delight. If you are always complaining that veggie burgers are boring or leave you unfulfilled from completing your manifest destiny of burger-world then this is the burger that you must try! I also tasted the Holy Cow and Holy Cow! It was absolutely amazing. It was a bit on the greasier than I expected side but I am not complaining. This type of meal is definitely a treat for me as I try to stay away from eating burgers/things that I don't cook myself. This new change in my lifestyle is bringing beautiful changes in my life and is keeping my eating out experiences to a minimum yet when I try things like the Holy Cow, it brings the purest form of joy to my existence. Food Stanton's burgers are DELISH. Beef patty is flavorful and juicy, one of my favorite burger patties. Bread is made by a local bakery. They're fancier/gourmet burgers with a traditional feel. Interior I love the renovated look of this burger diner/ joint. Looks like a place that would be in Austin. Price With the price point, I'd compare it to hop doddy's ($7-10). Definitely a 'gourmet' burger price, but worth it! Despite its disconcerting, (quaintly) dilapidated exterior, this Houston institution is a gem! Although I have not (yet) tried their entire menu, I have been a few times since discovering this family owned & operated, no frills burger palace. They offer a wide variety of humorous, delicious variants on the traditional burger for only a few dollars more than the $5 for the standard burger. The sides are also quite good. They offer a wide selection of beers from Karbach and Budweiser as well as Mexican sodas and "traditional" Dr. Pepper, a rarity even in Texas. I endorse this burger palace 100% for the friendly attentive service and simple charm of a business that has not changed much since the 1960's. Sooo....uuuumm...Why why why why why did it take me so long to try this place?!?!? I checked them out for lunch the other day & man oh man was I so happy I did! Ok, so I'm a good ol Texas country raised kinda gal & walking into Stanton's reminded me of the old stores & burger/sno-cone stands from when I was a kid. When stores had true meat/butcher counters that had that huge cheese wheel sitting on the counter & the butcher would give kiddos free slices. Like I instantly wanted to ask for 3/4 lb. of summer sausage!! LOL...But these were the days we were actually getting true, real unaltered, no fillers, 100% beef. And that pure beef flavor is EXACTLY what I got when I bit into that beautifuly salt & peppered, hot & juicy Mushroom Burger!!! 1st off when they brought that sucka to my table I had to just look at it for a sec it was so perfect looking. The bun was glistening from that quick last brush of butter they used to toast it & I could see the cheese melting before my eyes. That 1st bite was totally orgasmic!! The patty had that oh so illusive crust/crunch on the outside w/ an equally drool-worthy juicy hot fresh center. All I could taste was beef & black pepper!!! No extra crap to try & disguse crappy quality of beef. There was a perfect amount of cheese & mushrooms & the bun was like it'd had just come outta the oven. PERFECT!!!!! My sweet potato fries were yummo too, but I couldn't finish them because I just could NOT stop eating that burger!!!! OMG I'm like drooling just thinking about it. It's been awhile since I've done a good burger review, and what better place to start back up than a review of Stanton's? Stanton's City Bites is a no-frills facility located just outside of downtown and at the east edge of the Washington Corridor, but don't let this nondescript establishment fool you. Once you bite into one of their burgers, you'll just assume that all the effort is going into the food, and there ain't nothin' wrong with that! The menu at Stanton's has a good mix of classic, straight-up 1/2 pound burgers, and a plethora of more exotic offerings as well. For those looking to venture beyond the typical cheeseburger, the "Miss Piggie" adds candied bacon on top of an already bacon-infused patty, while the "Luke Skyburger" gives you deep-fried bacon amidst sauteed spinach and mushrooms...just to give you an idea. Now, I'm a fan of burgers of all shapes and sizes, and open to all sorts of toppings, but when I'm visiting a place for the first time, I like to have a good "baseline burger" that sets the standard for all future visits. In my opinion, for a burger to be delicious, you've got to get the basics right, otherwise that extra fried egg and pesto spread will all be for naught! Fortunately, Stanton's seems to know that as well, and regardless of your selection, you won't be disappointed. For this visit, I went more on the conservative side and got the "Truck-Stopper," a bacon cheeseburger with the addition of onion rings for a little extra crunch. Needless to say it was awesome. The burger had the right amount of toppings to make it bulging but manageable, with a well-seasoned patty cooked to perfection (in this case, medium). Grab that and a side of seasoned Italian Fries, and you've got yourself a well-priced lunch and a well-fed stomach. You can probably go with any of the burger options and be gluttonously satisfied. They offer snacks and sides that compose of mostly fried finger foods including pickles, tots and fries. They also have other options that I'm going to assume are for the health conscious people: sandwiches and salad (I will judge you). Definitely come here for the burgers and be ready to get your hands dirty, it can get messy quick! read more

So after we left the Yelp art event I was so excited we were down the street from Stanton's city bites. I have been in the Talk room forever now and they are always on the list for everyone's favorite burger in Houston. Food I felt so overwhelmed with choices that It took forever to pick one. I ordered the Turkey burger with gouda cheese-Good Flavor but needed to be more juicy. The gouda wasn't melted and I know its a hard cheese to melt but it can be done and it would have been nice to have that. Chilicheese Curly fries-Really tasty, the chili needed a little more balance but all in all it was decent. Husband ordered-Cowboy brunch burger and he said it was good but not put together right. The way the ingredients were layered they all fell off and the Texas toast got soggy. I took a bite and I agree with him. Garlic parmesan fries-Best part of the meal!!! Soooo freaking good! Nice and crispy with a perfect amount of parmesan, heavenly. All in all it was a good meal but I'm still waiting for what the big deal is??.... read more

After wanting to come here for the longest time, I finally had the chance to go. And yup. It was as good as I had expected it to be. As I'm sure you already know (you don't? Well now you do), Stanton's City Bites is located within a nondescript, building with no big, fancy, or flashy signs. One of my friends who came with me even told me that he'd driven this place many times and never gave this place a second look. And he's a burger lover!! When we got there, there was a short line. Maybe three other customers in front of us. We saw a little sign that explained the ordering process: Get drinks, order, pay, So we did just that. They had many selections for sodas, beer, and what not. But since I knew I was going to get some nice, juicy, burger, I decided to be healthier and grabbed myself a coke, wait for it, ZERO! So it came time for us to order. One of my friends decided to get the Monster Burger. My other friend opted for the spicy chipotle. Yours truly wanted to try the "Miss Piggie" but unfortunately they were sold out :-( Could it be because there was a UYE going on at the time? DAMN YOU OTHER YELPERS!!! LEAVE A FELLA YELPER SOME OF THE GOOD STUFF, WHY DON'T YA?! Anyway, I decided on the Holy Cow. We also got some tots and some Cajun season fries. We wanted the seasoned curly fries. But again, they were all out! DAMN YOU ELITES! Oh wait, I'm one of them! Even though the place was packed, our food came out pretty quickly. About 15 minutes or so. The fries and the tots are pretty good. I was informed by the cashier that the seasoned curly fries are ordered from some wholesaler or something so I'll assume that the same goes for the tots and the cajun fries. They were good nonetheless. However, the real money is on them burgers! Oooooo weeee! Mine was so, so, so, so good. Hands down of the best burgers I've had in Houston. Or even everywhere. The burger wasn't too greasy, it was cooked just right and best of all, it was BIG! Yes, it's not as big as the Monster Burger, but 1/2 lb of meat is a lot of meat! My friends had the same sentiment. They enjoyed their burgers very much. I could totally see them coming here a lot more because they live super close to this place. Lucky bastards!! Me? Hands down the best burger place that is somewhat unknown in Houston! Best place to have some of your arteries and veins clogged for a bit of good pure beef, bacon, cheese, and fries! Here are three burgers that I have tried from the past visits in order of greatness. 1. Miss Piggie: Excellent burger with ground beef, ground bacon, and ground canadian bacon mashed up with hash browns on top. I want to apologize in advance to Kermit the Frog for having an affair with his girl but it's really good. 2. Spicy Chipotle: Very sweet and spicy burger that you'll need extra napkins with (especially if you add on jalapenos!). I think I had to use about five napkins while I was eating this burger. 3. Chili Cheese: Wish it was a little spicier but overall it had nice blend of good cheese, onions, and beef. For the sides, the Italian fries had a lot of good seasonings on them but the curly fries were a-ok in my book (wish they're a bit crispier and seasoned better). read more

Super yum! Came on a Thursday around 11:15 am for lunch and it wasn't crowded. (Good thing for a group of 5 of us) The turkey burger is absolutely delicious and flavorful. It also wasn't dry like most turkey burgers I've had. I ordered one with avocado and no bacon and mayo. They also dont put butter on the bun and have it om wheat, thank goodness for those of us who are health conscious. Just a many mentioned they offer bottled water that you have to pay for versus getting it out on tap. Tip for those who don't like paying for water, just bring your own. Finishing it off with the bread pudding topped it. It was served fresh and warm. For a hidden jem like this place you knew they have to have pretty darn good bread pudding and guess what, they sure did! It was worth every bite. Although i tried a small portion of their menu i still rate as 5 stars since 4 other colleagues of mine that joined me for lunch had nothing but positive things to say about their burger, cheeseburger and bacon cheese burger. I'll definitely be back to satisfy my turkey burger craving and maybe my dessert tooth with the bread pudding. read more

First trip to Stanton's, so we went simple...Bacon Cheeseburger. Pros- Good burger, meat was full of flavor and cooked just right The bun was fresh, as were the lettuce, tomato,onion and pickles. The cajun fries were soft on the inside with a crispy and seasoned outer. Cons- Two small pieces of bacon on a big slab of meat was criminal. The parking can be difficult, a few small spaces by the door and some street parking. The drink selection was not a highlight for me, no refills and no fresh brewed tea. Would I drive a distance to come back...no. If I'm in the area, I will return for another item off the menu and sample another of Stanton's City Bites creations. read more

First visit to this funky spot (but clean and safe) in a funky transitioning neighborhood 5 minutes from downtown. Burgers and burgers - is their game. We had chili cheeseburgers ($6.50) which were great and large. Note described as "spicy but not hot" was untrue. Although I got the jalapeño mustard on the side and applied judiciously - it was HOT! Sides are all sorts of fries. Rated by many sites as one of the top 10 burger joints in Houston - I agree. Note - get their early (we got there ~ 11:30 AM). I've heard about this burger joint for a long time but I never had the opportunity to eat around in that particular part of Houston until recently when I was summoned for jury duty. They let us out for a hour and 15 minutes lunch and since I didn't want to lose my spot in the parking lot, I remembered this place was walking distance from the courthouse. When I got to the front, I was a bit confused as I did not know the history of this establishment being a grocery store at one point. I looked at the menu and oh man, do they have a good selections of burgers. I just go with the cheeseburger with fried egg and a side of curly fries. They don't have fountain water so you have to buy bottle water here. But the price for this full meal just under $10. There's a small amount of table and there's actually a good amount of customers of all kinds here. The food came out fairly quick and I couldn't wait for a bite of it. The patty is simply amazing as it's juicy, thick, and evenly seasoned for a great grilled taste. This is definitely one of the best burger for the price here in Houston. The fried egg definitely enhance the over all flavor. The curly fries were good but not as salty as certain burger chain that's known for curly fries. I only wish that I live and/or work around this area so I can come here more often for some burger goodness.
