Perfect place for a more casual date spot for a small bite or dessert - you can buy a bottle of wine/beer or get a drink from the bar, and order some tasty snacks and eat out on the socially distanced back patio. We wanted to check out the market so we strolled here for a light brunch. Ordered the crispy farm egg mushroom grain bowl and it was SO good. Also had a very delicious and beautiful citrus tart. And obviously had to try the bon bons. Everything was fantastic, and I look forward to returning to support such a charitable cause. Staplehouse proceeds go to the Giving Kitchen, which offers assistance to the Atlanta restaurant community suffering unexpected hardship. The food and service here were spectacular. The significant other really out did himself. :) Make sure to make your reservations just as the window for appts opens up bc he said the slots go super quickly. If you order 4 to 5 dishes, this would be a good shareable amt bt two people: * Beef: My rec! The beef is raw though so order with caution. The golden beets wrapped around the tender beef was really good. The mushroom shoyu added a nice touch to this delectable dish. * Bay scallops: They're the miniature kind, but just as tasty. The walnut and satsuma were interesting additions. Satsuma is seaweed btw. :) There were def a good variety of colors, tastes, and textures with this choice. * Swordfish: The fish was under seasoned imo, but I suppose you can't add too much flavors since the dish itself had lots of textures and flavors. The African butternut went well with the swordfish along with the two diff sauces. I would say this is the most filling entree -- even though it barely filled the huge plate. * Chicken sausage: My least favorite but still good. I just thought the sausage had a bit of a sodium kick compared to the other dishes. The buckshorn was interesting as it added a semi bitter ish taste to the dish. Buckshorn is the green plant you see in my pic. The drip coffee here was pretty good (as the coffee snob fiance of mine commented). Parking is valet only unless you want to find street parking yourself... Though the valet guy did just park our car across the lot at the mom n pop garage looking building. And last but not least, I suppose if you went here for a bday or anniversary, they will give you a little notebook with the date you visited the restaurant. I really want to like this place. Very creative concepts with food and some dishes were really great. There are some points of laziness that are difficult to come to terms with. We had the pea salad which was very tasty but bizarre as a concept. One of our favorite dishes until we came across a long gangly hair. I think it was mixed up in the massive amount of herbs in the dish but that's no good. The meat pie was ok. It tasted a little weird and a bit dry. Problem is the amount of egg shell busted in the crust. Huge lack of care. The liver plate was really good! The ceasar salad was outstanding and they have a great wine selection. I went and had lunch on a Saturday. Quite simply, I had the best "high-end" Cuban sandwich of my life here. I say high-end because it's just that- premium bread, roasted pork, ham, etc. vs, for example, Havana Sandwich Shop (which I love). I will most certainly be back sooner rather than later. I've been fortunate to make two visits to this James Beard winning establishment and at no point was I ever disappointed. I sat at the bar for the tasting menu both times. The service was impeccable and the bar tenders are extremely knowledgeable about their craft and have no issue making an off-menu drink. The food is as amazing and innovative as you can imagine by the pictures. I love that you have no clue what's being served beforehand (except for the staple liver tart) and that they give you an elegant copy of the menu at the end. I had huge expectation for this restaurant but unfortunately my expectation wasn't met. To be honest the food was ok but really, just OK. It's fine if I only pay 40 bucks or so for this. Every dish is just a tiny bite and that single bite wasn't even close to stunning. We came hungry and left hungry. Received a wedding anniversary gift card to Staplehouse and went there once for some drinks pre-pandemic. Was fine. Still had a good amount of money on the gift card and went back to try and have dinner there and Management said they are no longer accepting the pre-pandemic gift cards. I asked whether that was technically legal - as I don't believe it is - and they said 'well we have it mentioned on our website that we're no longer accepting them' and they're 'still figuring it out' (more than two years later). They also said that the gift card liability is 'a good amount more' than $10k so we're definitely not the only ones being screwed over by the owners. Millionaires will run a 'down to earth', 'farm to table' $$$$ restaurant for the elite but not let you use the money already handed over in making it successful. Any attorneys out there? read more

Awesome awesome spot! Staplehouse is more than just a meal, it's an experience. This is a spot that every Atlanta resident must visit. Getting a reservation can be a little difficult, you do have to make them at least a month in advance if you're seeking a weekend slot. I always book mine the second reservations open on their website. The dinners themselves are quite pricy but well worth it. They are very accommodating to dietary restrictions. I don't eat pork, and both times I've been they were able to make substitute items for me. I go every year around November, so their menus are fall/holiday themed. Each course is small, but I've had about 9-10 courses each time. Everything I've had has been amazing and is an explosion of flavor in your mouth. I highly recommend checking out Staplehouse even if it is just a one-time thing. It's truly an adventure of flavors. Tip: get there a little early so you can check out the Paper Crane bar upstairs! read more

Came here with the honey, and it was....underwhelming. For $105 per person, I was expecting something a bit more exciting. The place itself was fairly pretty, although a bit generic. Exposed bricks, nice lighting. I did like the cute little plants in jars. The tables, however, were suuuuuper cramped. Like for a good portion of our dinner, I just sat there listening to the party next to our table complaining about how divorce can really f*ck you up...and their hatred for Lebron James. Now personally, I'll indulge in the occasional eavesdropping, but with the tables so close together, there was really no option not to tune out other people's conversations. Kind of took away from the dinner experience. As for the food...well, I've had better. We did the tasting menu, and some of the dishes were good, but some were just straight up unenjoyable. Really liked the king crab dish and the dessert though. Oh, and the potato bread with the thyme oil was delicious. But that was about it. The cabbage dish, though cute in name, was very unpleasant. Other dishes, such as the fluke and chicken liver, were ok. My partner, who is not a huge fan of seafood, did not enjoy a majority of the dishes. Chicken liver is one of his favorite things to eat, and he found the tart just adequate. All in all, it was a nice enough experience, but when you're eating pho the next day, and you think to yourself, "hey, this is a way more enjoyable meal than the dinner I had at Staplehouse", it's probably a clear indication that Staplehouse is not not worth it. The most UNIQUE experience I have ever had. The food is very creative. The bites are small. Presentation is great. I honestly still have no idea what I ate to this very day. Preset menu. Farm table experience. The menu changes every few menus. The chicken liver dish was everyone's least favorite of the meal. My favorite was dessert. Staplehouse is one of the hardest places to get a reservation for in all of Atlanta. So let's start off by how to get in. I suppose you could try to get a reservation. They release them a month in advance and you have to reserve through Tock reservations. I tried and the entire month was taken in less than one minute. My recommendation is not to waste your time. I recommend going early and getting the bar seats that are simply first come first serve. You line up by the garage door that is painted with a picture of John Candy - not the front door. We got there a little before 5 - they open at 5:30 - on a Saturday and we were the first ones there. Service. Some of the best service that I have ever had. Everyone - bartender included - were very knowledgeable about the food and drinks. The staff explains every dish that they present to you and they are not pretentious about it in anyway. The food is brought out in the order they believe best suits the experience. Food. We ordered one of everything on the menu and I recommend that you do to. Presentation - 5+. Every plate is absolutely beautiful. There is undoubtedly a lot of time that goes into the presentation of the food. Preparation and Creativity - 5+. Taste - 4. Don't get me wrong everything taste great. In the same light though nothing blew my socks off. Craveability -2. This was the biggest disappointment. There wasn't a single dish that we ate that either one of us wanted more of or that we would come back and eat again. The Atmosphere. The experience is where Staplehouse truly stands out. It took us 3.5 hours to eat our meal as they bring out the food to suit the experience. Oh and did I mention we ordered one of everything on the menu. All and All. Try it at least once. I usually don't like to arrive too early to a dinner because it is often a hassle moving from the bar to the table. Staplehouse made that whole move seamless. Even with a party of four, we did not feel rushed to get to our table downstairs from the cocktail bar. Whether or not, you've had too many to drink, they carry the drinks for you to your table. And no one was left behind. The hostess, cocktail bar, and wait staff were all prepared to greet my party. The kitchen runs so well I didn't realize I had walked through an open kitchen on the way to my table. As for the food, the dishes were foreign yet familiar. The chicken liver tart surprised me with its bright acidity, being more familiar with country pate and banh mi pate. The beef tendon took me back to childhood with the flavor and texture, being reminiscent of Vietnamese prawn chips. The spigarello, ham, and walnut xo were equal parts Southern American and East Asian in flavor -- the greens had a beautiful texture. I shed a tear when I bit into the potato bread; it was like the first time I ever had Brazilian cheese bread straight out of the oven. The aged beef was beautifully seasoned: balanced, full of flavor, but not salty. We decided to do the wine pairings and they were all complementary and well-portioned. We had just enough to laugh a little more than usual, and enjoy with and in-between the dishes. As my new Staplehouse coozy says: Stomachs never empty; hearts always full. read more

No shade to Uber drivers, and thank you all for the hard work you put in and amazing services you provide. I just don't like that apparently we don't fit the "Staplehouse customer" image they were expecting, and they felt it pertinent to let him know that. It takes 0 effort to just.. not make those comments. Again, food was amazing though. The meal kit is a brilliant idea and miles more fun than take out. It's well priced, with fun instructions (whoever wrote them A+), and super simple to put together. Everything was super fresh and out of this world delicious. The place itself is cute, easy to find, and has good parking. Would I go back? H and I managed to get a reservation for our anniversary and to celebrate his birthday. I really wanted to like it. The food was beautiful, but entirely too salty. It overpowered some of the unique ingredients featured in each course. I had the vegetarian option, and H had the standard. The worst part was, the ribeye was drowning in a teriyaki-like sauce, which was utterly disappointing for H. I don't cook meat at home so he looks forward tasty meat dishes. The potatoes in one course was described as having rice flour coating and then fried for a crispy outer layer. Definitely didn't have a crunchy texture at all. The potato skins were a tough jerky-like consistency that lacked flavor as I continued to chew. The whole "casual" yet fine dining is new. Had heard a great hype about Staplehouse since it first opened as a top 50 new restaurant in the US couple years back. Was really looking forward to it. Pros: very nice staff, we arrived early and were sat early, open kitchen, casual yet classy, loaded bar, the cardamom meringue was tdf, they made us mocktails :] Cons: only about half the menu items we were served wowed us; we are pretty adventurous eaters, but not everything had flavors that played well together... they served a few "raw food" items that I am not quite into... the "raw" food tries to lean more on natural flavors of uncooked vegetables and such... it can be done well, but didnt swing for me this time around... felt a little over staffed... lots of people kind of standing around, almost felt like there was an audience watching the dinner guests since the space opened into the kitchen/serving area... which is where the service team hung out... read more

I'll start with the good.... Staplehouse is rated the number 1 restaurant in Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine. It is on the exclusive side, as reservations go up the first Friday of the month for the next month and are typically fully booked (For example, I made our 6/16 reservation on 5/4). It took us 3 months to finally get in. Also, every after-tax dollar you spend goes to "The Giving Kitchen", a non-profit organization that provides emergency financial assistance to restaurant workers in need. Service was also amazing. Everyone was great. Now the not-so-good.... 3 months ago (when we first started trying to come here), the reservation was $105 a person. It is now $150 per person and is prepaid. If something comes up inside of their 48 hour cancellation window, there is a no refund policy. Anyone with younger children should be aware of this as (as you probably have experienced) anything can happen. They ask for dietary restrictions and were definitely responsive when we sent ours over, but could not truly accommodate any of them. But as long as your dietary restriction is vegan or gluten-free, you should be ok. The part that it pains me to type, is that the food wasn't that good. It is a 10 course tasting menu (for those of you that haven't done that yet, it's small about 3-spoonful-sized portions of 10 dishes) and is determined for you. You do not get to order or change anything. We actually felt like this was pretty cool at first, as it was kind of like having a personal chef. The difference with that though, is your chef knows your likes and dislikes. The smoked duck (pictured below) was tasty, and probably the best dish. I've included others from our experience. In all honestly, it just ended up feeling extremely pretentious and like the focus was not on your dining experience. At $400 (after drinks and tip) for 2 people, I expected a lot more. I walked away feeling like I had bought into the hype. It was a shame, as it was my wife's birthday. If you like trendy, and are one of those people that love saying "I ate at the top-rated restaurant in Atlanta" give it a shot. There are definitely better ones on the list though. read more

Happy to have tried Staplehouse, even though we had high expectations it disappoint. Reservation is a must, we visited at 8:30pm in a Thursday and the place was full. The tasting menu is $105 per person. They have complementary valet so you don't need to worry about parking. I won't go over all of the dishes, you can check our menu in the pictures. I'll just point out to my favorite three dishes. One of my favorites was the aged duck that comes with the potato bread it tasted beautifully just the way it was presented. A second really good one was the mushroom, celeriac and mayor lemon. Finally the pecan, apple and hay dessert was tasty. Overall a really nice experience and worth the visit if you are in Atlanta. One of my favorite meals to date! Coming into Atlanta for one evening on a long layover, I did my research and discovered Staplehouse. After struggling my way through their stressful online reservation system, I was able to grab 2 seats for their outdoor patio. Seriously, it's so stressful... they release all the reservations at noon on the first Friday of every month and all the reservations disappear within seconds! It's high stakes! Each dish is smaller and meant for sharing, so my husband and I ordered every dish on the menu, literally. Normally, there are dishes that you love, dishes that are meh-ok and dishes that you dislike. Not here! Seriously, I loved every single dish. Faves: poached gulf cobia with sunchokes and a finger line crema; 5 mushrooms prepared different ways (raw to fried) with fennel and a celeriac custard; butter poached cabbage with trout sake bushi and rye; sourdough potato bread with a whipped thyme olive oil that was butter smooth in consistency. Meh: raw ribeye mixed with cashews and harukei turnips on top; rehydrated dehydrated carrot with benne seed and chicken liver tart (good persimmon gelee); aloe gin cocktail that I wanted to have more herbaceous notes. Well, the news is in, and it's, well...old news. This place is mind-blowing. The food, ambience, and service were all just spectacular. As anyone in Atlanta may tell you, getting in here is challenging - they're booked ahead months. We stood outside in line waiting for them to open and got 2 bar seats, which is where we like sitting anyway - score!! On to the good stuff. We got a few cocktails each, and they're all hand crafted with care. I tried the Burlap and Satin, a mezcal concoction, and the Little Green, which has gin (see photos for full menu descriptions). They were great. Karrie had the Eephus (a very unique vodka tonic) and liked it so much she had two. So...the food. Meant to be shared, so we just ordered a ton of stuff. Here's our rundown: 1. Beef tartare - tender and delicious. Spiced perfectly. An herb sauce made it sooooo good. 2. Chicken liver tart - somewhat of a staple on the menu, and for good reason. Rich and just melts in your mouth. 3. Roasted carrots - herbs, and just the right consistency. Had a green foam that was so good, hard to describe. 4. Asparagus and lamb - probably my least favorite, but certainly not bad. To be fair, neither of us absolutely love lamb but figured we'd give it a whirl so lamb lovers may be in heaven. 5. Potato bread - not huge or filling, but crispy and flavorful. 6. Aged pork - it's aged for two weeks, and has so much flavor. I could eat my weight in this. 7. Dessert - the peach insanity (my name, not theirs). I don't normally eat dessert but was glad I got this. I still don't know what it was, some sort of brûlée I think, but wow! Get it! This place is the real deal, and our bartender/server crew were just amazing to hang out with. Deserving of their reputation! The celeriac was surprisingly great. The broccoli dumplings were in our opinion just okay. I am a big foodie, so when other foodie friend said she made a reservation and was looking for someone to go to Staplehouse with her, I JUMPED on the opportunity. We are out of luck. What else can we bring ourselves to eat? I got the pork loin. My friend got the beef sausage. The food was pretty good, but the portions are SO SMALL. Especially for the price. Many people would like it but if I am paying $275 for dinner for two I would not want to sit in small iron chair extremely close to next table. So I was not impressed. Secondly, the drinks- cocktails were okay and some of them good! My husband is into mixology so we might have higher standards but the drinks were decent. It was not even good.. period. The taste pallet was very monotonous and probably 2 dishes out of entire tasting menu was something I would eat again. We have been to Bacchanalia, Lazy Betty, Kyma, Gunshow and many other multiple course restaurants and sorry to say this is not even close. Even the presentation was okay! Before making the reservation I emailed and asked if they could accommodate the fact that I don't eat red meat. I do eat chicken and sea food and they said they will. They plated 3 pieces of sauted mushrooms instead of beef for my main course... this was below standard for even a regular place. Like where is my protein? Anyways just letting you all know in case you are like me. Service was good, polite and nice people. They don't care if you don't like the food though. Leave your plate untouched and they would not ask if anything is wrong which tells me more people probably have done that and service knows the food is not that great (just saying). The story of how this restaurant came into existence will tear you up and all proceeds from the restaurant goes to the Giving Tree, which provides health care for food-and-beverage-industry workers in need. When the hype machine gets it right, it gets it right. Here's a rundown of my meal at the heavily-lauded Staplehouse. You and your dining companions pick out several small plates to share. Drinks: I sipped the housemade ginger beer and was in love ($4). Since I didn't notice it on the menu, check with an employee if it's available or not. Beef ($18): Eyecatching presentation, with the beef tartare hidden under ruffles of tangy green tomatoes. Way to start off the meal with a bang. Crab ($18): While maybe not the yummiest dish, I have to give props for the unique combination of crab and sunflower seeds. Dressed with flowers and herbs, I wasn't sure if I should eat this or hang up this wreath-shape concoction. Chicken liver tart ($12): One of my favorites. Just wished it were bigger! And it was served on a giant white plate which emphasized the small size. Eggplant ($16): Another hit. The crunchy sesame tuile not only was yummy, but it was lovely to look at too. Grandma Lillian's potato bread ($5): This bread was fine, warm and steamy, but it was a little too salty for me. Potato ($18): Another weaker link. The potato was again, a little too salty. Blackberry ($9): Excellent way to cap off the meal. And pretty too, with tiny purple flowers and popped sorghum on top of a circular disc of granita. Staff + Menu: Kristin was our server. She was really cool, like someone you could be friends with in real life. She also told us she enjoyed waiting on us which even if she were just saying that for flattery purposes, was still nice to hear. The runners were impressive by how they could spout off lengthy detailed descriptions of the food. I was thinking that Staplehouse could just print all of this on the menu, especially so I could refer to all the random ingredients later, like when I'm writing this Yelp review. The dish descriptions are very basic so definitely mention your dietary restrictions. Your server will know or be able to find out. Ambiance: Our table was close to the open kitchen which was rad because I really liked seeing all the chefs doing their thing, including using forceps to drop tiny components here and there. Now that's precision. Energetic vibe in a neat old building. The entrance is actually at the back. Reservations: The online reservation system reminds me of when I was buying concert tickets for a popular band. Slots get nabbed in seconds, it sounds like, when the next's months seatings are released the second Friday of the previous month. You have to put down a deposit which is then applied to your total bill. We arrived right on time for our reservation but had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated which was a little annoying but not terrible. Parking: There was plenty of street parking, but valet is an option if that's your thing. Conclusion: I was slightly apprehensive walking into Staplehouse due to all the press and praise it has garnered, but it was all for naught. For a special occasion or to indulge in a culinary event, consider Staplehouse. Just plan ahead, score a reservation, and go! read more

I visited Staplehouse twice in the same month for my birthday, and the menu was drastically different aside from their most popular starter, the chicken liver tart. The first time I visited, my two guests and I ordered the entire menu. The meal was more than enough to satisfy our appetites. The second time, I did not have a lot of time to spare but also was not very hungry, so my friend and I ordered the chicken liver tart, another menu item, and a dessert. Those three dishes took almost an hour and a half. That said, I would highly advise setting aside enough time for your meal, since they time all dishes for all patrons in the dining room. Valet parking is available, and as expected, service was pristine. The bar has mocktails available as well. For your birthday, Staplehouse provides you with a small notebook stamped with the date and a mini pencil. I love it. read more

Of course we had pretty high expectations after waiting months to get a reservation. We were quite excited to finally come for dinner. I can't figure out what all the hype is about. The food was not that great, the flavors were not as exciting as we expected - some were even bland. We had one of everything on the menu, so it's not like we didn't try everything! The single item that I did enjoy (which was a single bite) was the Beef Raviolo. It was ok. The dishes were very small. Intricately put together. It seemed like there was more focus on making the food into art pieces than making the food delicious. And when I say very small - I mean each dish allowed for about a single bite per person (4 people in our group). At $20-36/plate, that's crazy. Overall, we were quite disappointed with the whole dinner. So instead of even risking more disappointment with dessert, we decided to leave and go somewhere else. A wise choice I believe - we went to Krispy Kreme and couldn't have been happier to have more than just a few bites of anything. I will say, the restaurant vibe was alright. We say inside and we did enjoy the service and the atmosphere. The service was very good. Everyone was very attentive to us and every person that brought a dish out to us took the time to explain every detail of the dish. I know the place got voted best new restaurant of 2016, right? But, what was that even based on? I don't feel like that's based on the food.... I don't recommend going to Staplehouse - I'd say, keep a few hundred dollars in your pocket and go somewhere else. Atlanta is full of top notch restaurants kicking out amazing food that won't cost you both arms and both legs. Something must have changed in the past 7 months or so... I had heard about Staplehouse since it's won so many awards and was really excited to go! I looked at tons of reviews and found that it seems for the past 7 months or so, the reviews have really tanked, claiming the food was salty/not good in some way or another. I suspected something might be happening in the background (new kitchen staff), but i'm not sure. I took a chance anyway and went on Jan 31st. I'm sincerely disappointed that I went. The drinks we had were fantastic, the service was fantastic. The food was downright terrible. There was not a single dish/course that I could say I actually enjoyed. I was a fan that the kitchen was inventive, but unfortunately every single course was too salty (with exception of dessert). I'm not a big sweets person, but can't recall what it was (so it was not good enough to be impressionable, but not bad enough to be so either). I wouldn't recommend anyone goes to this restaurant until they have maybe changed the staff back. OR, if this wasn't the issue, perhaps Staplehouse won all the awards for being charitable. A five star rating and hype certainly can't be for the food. read more

This was, hands down, the best restaurant I have ever been to. My boyfriend and I came here for our 3 year anniversary and it was by far the best night out we've ever had... y'all have seen where we've been based on my previous reviews so you know that means a lot! Staple house is located in Old fourth ward on Edgewood avenue. There is a good amount of street parking and they also have Valet. Getting a reservation... tricky, but worth it. They only take Tock reservations once a month and they fill up within minutes, yes the entire month fills up within minutes, so make sure you know exactly when you want to come and how many people. There is also a $25 deposit taken per person when you book your reservation, but it is taken off of your bill when you come in. Things to know: this will be an expensive night out. All of the ingredients are sourced locally, and they are the best of the best quality. Get over it, trust me, it is worth it. If you are a picky eater, don't eat here, they don't have time for your foolishness because I thought I knew about food before I came here, but clearly I knew nothing and I have now been brought to the light with ingredients I didn't think I would enjoy that turned out to be tastes of heaven. The atmosphere is so chill. The servers wear jeans and t shirts, Outkast is playing, and it feels like you are eating at a friends house who happens to be an amazing chef. Our server was amazing. He helped us figure out the order everything should come out and had great suggestions for us. Everything is locally sourced and each dish was explained in detail to us as it was brought out. We started with the Chicken Liver tart... DEAR HEAVEN stop what you are doing and eat this tart. It was the most delicious tart I have ever eaten. I'm not even a chicken liver fan, or at least I am now, I feel like I was in the chicken liver dark ages and this was the chicken liver renaissance. Next was the steak tar tar, again, amazing. So flavorful, divine. Next up, a pasta that I didn't write down in the moment because I just wanted to put my whole face in it. Light, fluffy, fresh, tasty, I took a picture, don't worry. Next potato bread, not just any bread, but the chef grandmothers recipe, cooking runs in the family because it was delicious. Next the halibut. Cooked to perfection, went great with the un oaked Chardonnay I chose, and I definitely wanted to drink the sauce. Next... the aged beef... literally gave me goosebumps. They did not ask for a temp, but at this point I knew that I did not know what was best for me and they would make all of my culinary decisions moving forward, it was perfect. So tender, so flavorful, I almost fought my BF for the last bite. Dessert- lots of white chocolate with strawberries and strawberry sorbet, Ok I was 4 drinks in and don't remember the details, I of course took a picture. It was delicious. My BF and I shared everything and it was the perfect amount of food. All of the portions look small at first, but the server helped us order and made sure we were taken care of the entire experience. We felt comfortable asking questions, no one was condescending when we asked about ingredients, and we truly enjoyed every bite. Overall, this is the best food, most unpretentious environment, and coolest atmosphere I have ever eaten. This is a great option for a special occasion. My husband and I have been looking forward to trying Staplehouse since we heard about it (if you haven't read its origin story, please google it, it's heartwrenching yet heartwarming) and our five year anniversary seemed like a perfect opportunity. I won't go into detail about the food since the menu changes, but I loved everything on the tasting menu, minus the chicken liver tart - I think this is a regular on the menu - it was too strong for me, just not my thing. I left feeling the perfect amount of full. A few days before your reservation, they email you asking if you are celebrating anything special. I've had this from other restaurants (or even adding a note on Open Table) and it is never really brought up again - however we were wished a happy anniversary quite a few times. And at the end were presented with a little notebook that said Happy Anniversary with the date stamped on it - very cute! (unfortuantely we ate here a couple days after our actual anniversary so the stamp is kind of a random date). Having gone to Alinea in Chicago, I will say that Staplehouse is right up there in terms of food quality and presentation. While Alinea is more theatrical and very obviously innovative, Staplehouse quietly assumes its own place in dining excellence and absolutely deserves the Best New Restaurant in America title it received a few years ago. read more

Customer service: 10/10: water filled constantly by everyone who is able. Served by multiple people. Shout out to our waitress with a nose piercing and that tattoo guy with #13 on his arm. Bathroom:10/10: clean and smells terrific Menu: 1) beef, celery, celtuce, mushroom shoyu: $18 - salty, fresh beef, soft and light 2) crab, sunflower, leek, peppers $18 - Smells like nature and mint, crab is warm, melts in your mouth with custard 3) grandma lilian's potato bread $5 x 2 =$10 - Smells earthy, hard on outside, extremely soft on inside. Tastes good with or without butter. Includes 14 year old recipe 4) sunchokes, yolk, ginger, sake lees $16- Smells like old or spiced up potato chip. The potatoes taste like ginger though! Cracker on top is actually left over sake from distilling process 5) aged pork, broccoli, cardon, tetragonia $34- Pork looks raw!! But it isn't really tasty. Together tastes good in one bite. The pork alone tastes kind of gamey but extremely fresh. 6) coffee dessert: I did not get it because I hate coffee. Awww!! I LOVED this crab, then beef, then pork, then bread then sunchokes. In that order. I'd rate them all 10/10 for quality of food, 8/10 for how comfortable I was finishing the dishes on average and 8/10 for lack of flexibility in the menu. This isn't a prefix menu but yet we cannot substitute coffee for vanilla ice cream for instance...why so stubborn?? Other than that it was great!! Onward to michelin star restaurants I go! I should start out saying that Staplehouse is really great. But I just couldn't give it 5 stars based on all of the hype around the restaurant. Unfortunately for Staplehouse, the hype leads to more criticism and less room for error. With that out of the way, let's get into the review: Drinks: They have a nice selection of cocktails. I tried the Ivey League which was delicious. It's like a cross between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned. Very easy drinking. They used a lavender honey which added a nice twist. We opted to not get a bottle of wine that night, but rather did wine by the glass. The options were a little limited and included some interesting wines that you don't normally find elsewhere like Russian or Slovenian wines. Food: The food is amazing. If I were leaving a rating just based on the food alone, I would give it a five stars. We started with the mushrooms dish which included farro, chestnut, and tarragon. There was a variety of mushrooms in the dish and they were packed with flavor. Next we had the chicken liver tart with strawberry, radish, and mioga ginger. It was odd and unexpected but enjoyable. The strawberry wasn't overpowering but added a slight sweetness to the dish. Afterwards, we had grandma lillian's potato bread. O.M.G. You must order this. I probably could have made a meal off of just the bread and been happy. Lastly, we had the trout and tilefish as more of our entrees. Both fish were cooked perfectly. Service: I have mixed feelings about the service. As soon as we got there, the restaurant immediately acknowledged the allergies in my party and noted that the kitchen was aware. Our waitress also helped guide us through the menu to avoid any allergy issues. The majority of the staff we encountered were great, but our waitress was a bit awkward and there were a few moments where we were sitting without drinks and ready to order more. This, along with the annoyance of trying to get a reservation (it took us a couple of tries over a few months to finally get a reservation even though we were online right at 12pm when reservations were released each time) in the first place is why I couldn't give it 5 stars. read more

Another five star experience from Staplehouse! We came back in June to celebrate our anniversary. (Reservations are always a gamble but it must have been fate! I was lucky enough to get a reservation on our actual anniversary!) Because we'd booked our reservation for the patio but inclement weather was preventing anything from happening outside, we were seated upstairs this time. I'll definitely admit I prefer the hustle and bustle of downstairs. The atmosphere upstairs is just non-existent and we were seated next to a large, loud table who were obviously having a great time (i.e. screaming with laughter). Oh well! While the first meal we had here was just breathtakingly delicious, we both knew that it would be different this time and were prepared to try all new items. As with last time, we ordered nearly everything that we offered for the night, and I would say for the most part were very pleased. I won't go into the exhaustive detail I did last time but suffice to say, Chef Ryan Smith just keeps blowing my mind, sending dishes like these back-to-back. I mean, the man makes me feel like I've never eaten a carrot before EVERY TIME HE COOKS A CARROT.
