This is the Worst deli in the Detroit area. They have cut down their already overpriced sandwiches., soups & other salads & liver. We spent over $50.00 for 3 tiny sandwiches a 1/4 cup of soup & a very tiny chopped liver. On top of this they were rude to everyone- especially unkind -given the many elderly people waiting very politely to procure a few items for Thanksgiving. Excellent corned beef and the rye bread was as expected. Crunchy on the outside and dense and chewy on the inside. The only thing is this place is EXPENSIVE. I walked out with 1 loaf of bread and 1/2 pound of corned beef spending $22.00. I know prices are high right now but felt this was a bit ridiculous. read more

I guess they had my last review removed.. stay away from this place.. they are now doing curbside orders. They are coming out to your car to deliver your order, which is great, but they aren't changing their gloves or aprons after they come outside to deliver your order. They go right back behind the customer , wearing the same gloves and apron, grabbing food and preparing the next order. They don't care about your health. The one cashier was outside smoking with her gloves on, right outside the front door, goes back in to behind the register, never washes her hands or changes her gloves, and proceeds to pack and ring up the next order. WOW!!! For an sandwich and pop at 17 dollars, you would think you would be treated like royalityz but you are treated like trash. Only 4 stars because some of the prices seem so high! But this is an internationally known restaurant. It has the connivence of a corner store and some unique emu items. I spoke with shirah, I think, and she was amazing! She took my order and my food was ready when I got there. They have phone ahead orders or you can just wait in your car and they will bring it out to you! The bagels are large and fresh. The cream cheese is name brand. I first came to the Star Deli when house hunting in the Detroit area in 1980 but move away in 1987. It has been my favorite Deli anywhere ever since. It is a must visit when I am in the area.... Several below suggest that the long time owner (for 50 years or more) may no longer be involved. That is very understandable. Paid them a visit earlier this week and I must admit that my standard corned beef on rye with mustard was a first ever disappointment. Bought four Reubens ... fed four different people who all rated them as mediocre ... The bread was dry and overall, the sandwich had no flavor. For the price they should have been memorable ... they weren't. If you are on the east side, check out Uncle Harry's Deli ... now that is an excellent Reuben ... you won't be disappointed. read more

As I approached the cashier to pay, I pulled my mask slightly away from my mouth to speak to the lady thru the glass while still covered and she started yelling " PLEASE KEEP YOUR MASK ON". It would have been something I just ignored until another woman decided to chime it with unnecessary comments saying"yeah these people don't get it...its not hard just keep it on". After that I had enough! My dollar is helping you all stay open in these times and I refuse to be treated badly. Especially when your food isn't as good as it used to be. I hate that there is nowhere to sit here as it is such a haul from my house. The potato salad here is the closest I have ever eaten to my absolute fave (and sadly long gone) corned beef place ever, Ben and George's. Awesome stuff and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The sandwiches here are overrated in my opinion. Very crusty rye and just merely meh corned beef. I have to agree with Janelle in that the corned beef is sliced too thickly and the fat does not melt into it as it does at the Bread Basket. It results in still decent flavor but way too chewy for my taste. I also hate the russian dressing and the cole slaw is meh. The new dill pickles are quite tasty though, I also like the Better Made chips. The parking lot sucks, staff is none too friendly or happy looking. End of story. All in all if I am in the area I will always swing in for potato salad and pickles. Plus they have great bagels next door. My family & I have been regular customers at Star Deli for over a decade....we no longer live in the area so we made a special trip to get some corned beef and yummy coleslaw to go....as we walked to the door 10 mins before close (being a service industry worker i understand that can be annoying, but with the traffic of the dream cruise we did our best). As my father & I walk up....the door is locked in our faces...as I am reaching for the door. i have to say I am not enjoying writing this review. I am an unabashed fan of old style delis and I have gone to the Star Deli for many years. After not going there for several months I stopped earlier this week. I ordered a corned beef on rye with Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. The bill was almost $13.00 but delis are expensive so I was ok with that. I ate the sandwich in my car. The corned beef was sliced too thin, it was not hot and the bread was just not up to par. All around a disappointing experience. I'm hoping this was a one time experience and next time i go there it will be better. I also noticed Sol was not there. I hope he is ok. read more

Dear Star Deli. You used to be so great. It's painful for me to write this but hope this is a wake up call. I don't know who is running the place now but you're essentially serving Kroger grade corned beef at $25/lb. And every time I'm there, I'm made to feel like it's god's gift to be your customer. There is no real sense of urgency to serve customers and there is a perpetual disconnect between the deli guys in the back and the counter people up front making operations visibly inefficient. 1 for bone chilling rude cook. Don't know how long he's been there. My mom and I have frequented Star for many years. My extended family have catered for the holidays over the years. The food is fantastic. I bit my tongue so hard after the interaction with this cook on 5/27/23 around 3-3:30 pm. They have the plexiglass betwn them and customers. The voice drains out. He said "Can I help you?" to my mom. She couldn't hear well enough and his 1 second later snarky response to a cook we couldn't see was "Didn't I say that loud enough?" Also, looking like come on now you heard me. Really? We only want a respectful interaction. Wish Harry (owner) was on the line. That can't be happening if he's there. My motive here is to just get the cook to realize at times he's very rude. And learn from his abruptness attitude. We will not have him wait on us. What business wants to hear this? If it comes to you losing your job that's on you. I want you to improve. I don't want to see you lose your job. But, it could happen. Own your attitude and realize you're hurting business. Try again. Very good. I had the vegetarian sandwich and it was very tasty. Delicious rye bread piled HIGH with tomato, coleslaw, lettuce, onion, Swiss cheese, and very yummy Russian dressing! Wow! Lots of flavor for a veggie sandwich. Prices are high, but you're getting what you pay for...quality food at a place that is locally owned. I have been a customer for nearly 40 years, though it has been less frequent now that I have been working remotely. As many have said, the corned beef is to die for, as is the pastrami. My toughest decision is which of the two to get! While I enjoy Reubens, I find that the Pastrami and Corned Beer Special - meat, coleslaw, and Swiss on rye- will survive a 30 minute take home trip better. I was concerned to see some more recent comments saying that the portions were small. I was there last month and the portions were the usual giant sandwiches! Yes, they have gone up in price but compared to others they are still a great value. Best to Sid Jr and his team. When I was passing through Detroit, I was told I HAD to stop here. I'm glad I did and I will be stopping again. This is a CLASSIC OLD SCHOOL deli. Think what you might hope to find in New York, or Chicago, or Jewish neighborhoods in LA. No frills, just sandwiches piled high with quality meats and cole slaw. I got a corned beef and a reuben. Both were among the best I've had anywhere. Prices arent cheap, this is a "you get what you pay for" situation. As others have stated, there's no where to sit down. I'm pretty bummed out I found this place about a month before I was being laid off at Verizon. I always struggled to find a good sandwich (or any good restaurant, really) in Southfield and now it's too late. I live in Dearborn, so I probably won't find my way out here very often after I leave my job. If you follow my reviews, you know I'm boring as hell (my apologies for being so lame) and I really just like a good turkey sandwich. Luckily for me, Star Deli has great turkey sandwiches. Too bad I found out about them too late. I've been a few times and had them make a sandwich to my liking, since all the ones on their menu were a little too daring for me. I get turkey, cheese and bacon on challah bread with a little Italian dressing. Simple but delicious. Their prices for sandwiches are a little steep, around $8-9 apiece, but well worth it because they're stacked and the turkey is good quality. I can't speak for the other meats but I loved the flavor of the turkey and the cheddar was thick-cut and tasty. They have dozens of drinks to choose from including juice, tea and canned pop... and beer? I don't know how the beer works but it's there. The deli also has different brands of chips including Better Made and Lays, Entenmann's packaged sweets and their own individually wrapped cakes and brownies. It's a great place to find a good sandwich but their parking sucks and you can't eat inside... AND it's such a drive from Dearborn. (They accept credit cards, even though it's not clearly indicated on their door.) read more

Sadly not the Star Deli of the past. There has been a decline in the quality of the food over the past few years to the point where the food is at best mediocre. There seems to be a loss of caring. At their price point of $12 dollars for a sandwich or $10 for a salad Star,sadly, is no longer the destination deli for great corned beef and pastrami September 2018 update. While the deli food has gone downhill I thought I would try their smoked fish. Taste was fine but instead of pieces of smoked whitefish and sable, Star wrapped up the whole whitefish and the prepackaged sable which made the fish impossible to serve until it was deboned and cut into pieces. For the price they charged per pound it should have been delivered ready to serve. Another example of lack of caring in my opinion. read more

Wow! I am impressed by the quality of offerings here. As a former Montrealer, I consider myself to be an aficionado on corn beef, pastrami and smoked meat sandwiches. Big thanks to the Yelpers that came before me, this is why we drove here today! My party of two ordered the corn beef lean, on rye with Russian dressing, coleslaw and mustard. Tasty succulent meat, wonderful soft rye with a crust that holds together well. This is served with a small wedge of pickle on the side. We also had fries on the side, they were hot and crispy made to order. This establishment is simply a deli counter making sandwiches for take out. Seating is two small tables outside the front door. There was a steady flow of clients while we noshed on our lunches. Not being able to finish off the large size potion, I quickly realized that if I took these leftovers home, my husband would be begging for his share. So I ordered a second sandwich to go. Bad service. I started at the Original Bagel Factory. They sent me next door to this deli. I asked them about breakfast sandwiches and the guy just pointed at 1 of 50 signs as if I should know that... I said I'd have that and ask which bagels they have. Instead of the deli having a list of bagels he tells me to go back to the bagel shop because he's CLEARLY NOT GOING TO SIMPLY TELL THE CUSTOMER. I went home. What a disappointment, after being in the hospital for days I was looking forward to a good hot Corned Beef sandwich. Spending $15.00 for sandwich and only to get home and the Onion Roll was hard. By the time we got home the business was closed and called the next day and was told that sometimes the bakery sends the bread that way. Really that's not my issue there should be a quality check of your product before it is sold to the consumer. I was told there was nothing they could do unless we brought the sandwich back from the day before ....Really after poor hospital food we made a new sandwich using regular bread.
