When name says Chicken, you gotta assume they're good at chicken! You also gotta order up some chicken dishes! I tried the Chipotle Charbird and a split between the Nashville Hot and Korean Glazed chicken tender. To boot, I asked for 1 of each sauce they had; they were more than happy to oblige. Love it! Let's start with the Chipotle Charbird. I have to tell you, I misread the menu and was expecting crispy chicken versus a grilled chicken, so I was a little disappointed when I opened up my bag. The top of their menu clearly reads "All sandwiches are served with crispy chicken" so I naturally assumed you'd have to specifically ask for grilled chicken. WRONG! Not what I expected. Not what I wanted. Not a good start. I scarfed down the Chipotle Charbird and thought it was pretty good, nonetheless. However, given I spent the better part of 5 minutes reviewing my receipt and re-reading the menu, I was already a bit soured when I took my first bite. The chicken tenders were pretty good. Very good flavor. However, by the time I got them home (I live 25 minutes away) they were a little soggier than I would have liked. I expected a nice crunch. But, after sitting in the box so long, they weren't so crunchy anymore. Oh how I would love a do-over! Again, flavor was good but the lack of that crispiness took away from the experience. I can't really fault Starbird for that. I'll blame it on COVID and the Pickup-Only experience. As for the sides, I really like the Kale coleslaw, but the fries also didn't survive the 25 minute delay. They too were a little on the soggy side. The moral of the story? Covid sucks! Wear a mask and get vaccinated so we can beat this pandemic, and we can all eat our food fresh and piping hot inside the restaurant. Orders: Nashville chicken sandwich (blazing hot) - I split the sandwich in half with my brother. I love spicy food, but I'm sad to say this one was not spicy at all. We also asked for the house coleslaw on the side because my brother doesn't like coleslaw. They forgot to give it to us. That's okay though, because I was already half expecting that to happen. Special requests almost never gets fulfilled (anywhere) from my experience so I don't usually like to customize my order too much anyway. Nashville fries (blazing) - not spicy at all either. Nothing too special about their fries, but it is pretty cold recently so the sauce dried up by the time we got home. Chicken chop salad - the chicken pieces are not bad. The Hype is Real!! Ordered the chipotle charbird sandwich ($8.97) and 12 boneless wings ($12.49). Honestly when we got our order and opened it up it didn't look like much. You really can't go wrong with a bomb fried chicken sandwich. I feel like I've heard so many good things about Starbird, and I'd say it lived up to the hype! The interior is cute and thematic, and the ordering process is really seamless. They have a few screens to order and pay on, and then the orders are presented in a pick up area with the names of orders ready on another screen. We ordered the Starbird, which comes with avocado and a slaw, and we got it on Dutch Crunch, which is probably the best kind of bread ever. They initially got our order wrong, and I think they gave us the Big Star instead. They quickly acknowledge the mistake and made us an order of the Starbird. I took a bite of the first Big Star we received and ate a good chunk of the Starbird, and both were really good. The chicken was juicy and crunchy, but the Starbird was far superior. I'm a big advocate for avocados in every sandwich, so it made a difference in the overall composition and texture of the sandwich, and the slaw was very refreshing and flavorful. The one complaint I have is that the bread was bigger than the sandwich. I feel like an ideal chicken sandwich has more chicken than bread, but at least the chicken here is good quality! read more

Came here to pickup togo food for a yelp event. Great spot on the edge of the Pruneyard shopping center in the back-- easy to get to. You can order on the touchscreen stations in the front and the menu is large and easy to see in the window. There is a pickup area off to the side. I rated another location with one star. I'm not entirely impressed with Starbirds offering even still. Today I had their wings which were kind of on the small side. The garlic parmesan flavor I avoid because it was really devoid of that nice garlic Parm flavor you expect. The sweet Thai chili was nice but it was only sweet without any semblance of heat. Chicken was cooked better than before and came across as average. Hence my current 3 star rating. I have zero clue as to why this place is so popular given the quality. Thai Salad Crispy Chicken - that's all I should have to say for this review. Only kidding. My mouth wouldn't ever allow that to happen... We ordered take out, one stormy day, but wished we had dined in. Their dining area is so comfy, and quaint and we had gotten our food fairly quickly. Their Thai Salad with Crispy Chicken was our choice, and that came with two sauces - one sweet, and the other savory. We combined them both, and used the entire sauce serving into each of our bowls. It was soooo good, but as we were nearing the bottom, we started to regret that decision. Depending on your preference of how dressed you want your salad to be, just remember: you can add, but you can't take away. Don't be like us. Anyway, their chicken is so juicy and tender and, from the photos included, they don't skimp out on their portions at all. I ordered the classic Starbird crispy chicken sandwich and my buddy had the mango cashew crunch salad. Both of our meals were better than we expected. My chicken was especially crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside, and not the least bit greasy. Ditto for the chicken bites in my friend's salad. It had a nice combination of ingredients, including roasted cashews, and was simply dressed with a tasty sweet chili vinaigrette. The diced mango was juicy and the greens underneath didn't get limp. Portions were large but not gargantuan and everything was fairly priced. I would have given a higher rating but I have a minor gripe about the service. We ordered at the cashier instead of the kiosk because we had a couple of simple requests: 1) an empty plate so we could share our meals, 2) super slaw on the side of my sandwich instead of on top, and 3) my sandwich cut in half. It wasn't the least bit busy, so the kitchen staff had plenty of time to actually read the instructions on our order. Unfortunately none of our requests were honored. Starbird is now in frequent rotation for me when I'm looking for quick, order ahead takeout. They have a great app that's easy to use and welcomes substitutions, which I always appreciate. My boyfriend and I first tried their chicken sandwiches and weren't wowed by them, but I'm glad we gave them another try because now we absolutely love their salads and chicken tenders! The salads are huge and super flavorful. I didn't realize that when you order ahead you have to check in with someone at the counter, they don't yell the orders out or leave them visible, so you have to ask to see if it's ready every time. Came here for a lunch on a Friday, didn't seem too busy but then again, it is fast food. You can order on a self-serve kiosk and it gets sent to the kitchen for preparation. It was extremely fast, probably took 2-3 minutes tops to come out with my chicken tendies and fries. F O O D I ordered the 4 tender box with Nashville Hot and also asked for the blazing. Spice level itself is not that bad, it will make the nose run a little but won't have you chugging a water. I think the tenders itself were a notch above standard, there is a lot of meat within the tender. The fries were okay, the ones under the tenders were soaked in grease and seasoning while the other ones were half half between soft and crispy. One thing I noticed is that mine didn't get served with "super slaw" which is disappointing because that would be nice to cut out the grease from the fries and the tenders. I didn't bother asking though because I was too lazy. I would come here again but for the salads instead of the tenders. I don't eat tenders that often so not sure I would eat the tenders again. Also, it was a little expensive (tenders and fries came out to 13.47 , +1 from nashville hot). I'd expect for it to come with a drink but that's just the meal itself. Generous fries portions and an interesting local selection of fountain drinks (Alameda Point Craft Soda Co.) makes it an easy spot to want to return for more. Parking can be a *bit* crazy at the Pruneyard if you come during peak hours, so adjust accordingly. I'd describe the place as fast/casual in terms of service (order up front, get a buzzer for when to pick up your order, etc.) , but the place is pretty pristine as far as condition goes and staff was very polite during my visit, so certainly no complaints here. We opted for more sandwich action (Szechuan Hotbird and Starbird with dutch crunch bread), but my brother wanted to nab the fountain drink to try them out (they have a fries+fountain drink combo) and we got the Nashville fries while we were at it. They have two spiciness levels (hot and blazin'), but you can translate that to "mild" vs. "kinda hot" for regular spicy imbibers. =Generally speaking the chicken is definitely crispy crunchy as heck and pretty moist, but a tad on the tougher side. I forgive them on this front since the flavor balance is pretty solid and price is lower. =The Szechuan Hotbird was surprisingly a good blend of sichuan peppercorn and sichuan-esque flavors. It could use a bit more peppercorn and more ginger/garlic, but quite well balanced by itself as a standalone sandwich. =I had only a bite of the Starbird, but I liked it as a lighter but creamier fried chicken sandwich. I'll probably opt for their super slaw as a side for my next visit. =Nashville hot fries has quite the copious serving of cheese blend and crispy french fries (that weren't so crispy after being drenched in all that ranch and melted cheese). I don't so much mind the price, but at that price point, certain expectations need to be met of which the following fall well short. 1. The self ordering kiosk is a mess. The responses are extremely laggy...I had to press the number 2 multiple times for instance to get it to register. Also, after inputting my phone number to get my order notification, the box to receive promotions and junk was pre checked off and I had to go back after having accidentally moved to the next screen to uncheck it. This is pretty scummy imo. 2. The fries aren't crispy at all. They are limp and flaccid and wouldn't satisfy anyone. Why did I pay the extra $5 (including the drink) for this floppy nonsense? 3. Otherwise the rest of the food is good and the service is nice. $35 for two meals used to mean something. This spot was a big surprise to us. We tried it on hungry stomachs (and we all know sometimes that can be trouble). We ordered a couple of salads, drinks, and tacos for the kid using the ordering system as you walk into the door. It was a bit glitchy but we got the order through and food was ready not too long after ordering. We sat inside; the space was clean and very "happy."
