Alright this starbucks is officially the worst starbucks I've ever stepped foot into. Now, here is a little info about me. I worked at a starbucks before, so I know exactly how the operate. Now let me explain why this one is horrid. 1) They do not properly clean their coffee urns. How do I know this? You can taste the rancid coffee when you get an average cup of joe. Disgusting. It is a company standard for them to wash their urns, they do a daily rotation. There is NO reason for their coffee to taste rancid unless they don't wash their urns. 2) They do not keep track of how long their coffee stays on the counter. All Starbucks are supposed to have Egg timers so that you know exactly how long their coffee has been sitting there, so there is no question at all if the product is fresh or not. 3) This location seems to have no concept of Food Safety. The other day I went in and ordered a Earl Gray Latte with soy. I'm allergic to milk, so needless to say it's not me being picky it's because I'm allergic to it, and I can get sick. When she was making my drink, she was drinking her own beverage quite a big health code violation. If she's doing that in front of me, what else is going on in the store? It's one thing to go in the back room and have a sip, it's another thing to sit there tilting your head back with your beverage in your mouth while you're making someone else drink. Anyway, I informed her that I asked for a latte with soy milk, she gave me an attitude, and then steamed soy milk in the same pitcher which she just had milk in. -- SHE DID NOT RINSE IT OUT--. That means not only was she mixing a hot product with a cold product ( Again time, and temperature mumble jumbo you learn during food safety courses ), but she mixed two products together ( one that I'm allergic to), with absolutely no consideration to the fact she could possibly kill me. --- Now, I'm not that allergic to milk, but there are some people who are highly allergic to either soy or milk, so I find her lack of education in the matter scary. I know when I worked at starbucks, I was taught better than that. .... . .. I guess the location is nice, but why risk getting sick? I'd rather go to another coffee shop. read more

I'm not sure if it's Newport's taste buds, but the coffee is really watery. I ordered a grande caramel macchiato, but it tastes and looks almost like plain milk. I ordered a second one with an extra shot of espresso, but still tastes very light. Same thing with their regular black coffee and ice teas. The staffs are nice when we first ordered. But when we asked for 2 tea refills and a glass of water later on, (they still talk politely) but you can tell from their expression that they're a bit unhappy (considered we ordered 3 sandwiches, 2 pastries, 2 bagels, 2 venti teas, 2 macchiatos, 1 black coffee). And we waited a very long time for the refills to come, and the super small cup of water is mostly ice. I drink coffee almost everyday in New York. At least, in NY, espresso drinks taste like there's actually espresso in them. read more

My 100th review is Starbucks! Appropriate since I'm addicted to their frappuccinos and their pastries are awesome when I'm craving something sweet! It's a nice store, friendly employees and they always get my order right the first time. Service is fast and store is always clean. Only downfall to this location is parking, it's in a touristy area so mid summer you can pretty much forget it unless you're on foot! Now I'm craving a white chocolate mocha frappuccino! read more

Quick with taking orders but slow making the drinks caused large crowds of people waiting for drinks. Also WiFi had problems. It was available, then stopped working. Someone sent their kid to ask the staff if the could do anything and he was told that they "don't have WiFi anymore". read more

This is a great location in the middle of all the shopping in Newport. It's got two floors and plenty of seating. We went there late one night during labor day weekend. Service was good and the lattes were great. We enjoyed sitting there for a little while, after a long day. Very relaxing. I will definitely be back here the next time I visit! read more

This location is really nice but seriously.... is this the only Starbucks in Newport? I was really suffering for my Starbucks during my time there and this was the only one I could find. However, as others have said, it's a really great location. It is very spacious and clean and the staff is friendly. The second floor seating is great. You can look down and see people come in, order, waiting for coffee, etc. When I was there it was not particularly crowded. read more

Most Starbucks deserve a solid three stars. Nothing special, but nothing to complain about. Whenever I visit Newport, I always stop into this Starbucks because it is just so dang convenient. It is clean, relatively spacious if you find a seat, and the perfect place to plop down and get comfy for a bit to rest your feet after walking down Thames. There is some seating on the ground floor as well as a second level with around 6 small tables. While it can get pretty crowded in there at strange times throughout the day because of its conspicuous location in the heart of Newport, the line moves quickly (kudos to the hardworking baristas). The bathroom isn't the cleanest but let's face it, all Starbucks bathrooms are a little suspicious since they are completely open to the public. All in all, this Starbucks is a little more sophisticated than the rest, so I think that they deserve one more star than the rating that I would give the rest. read more

High ceilings. Plenty of windows - sunlight! Great location on Thames St - sure to be good for people watching in the warm months. Second floor with a balcony view. Comfortable couch seats and plenty of tables. Outlets! I know exactly what to expect when I order from Starbucks and its consistent quality is something I now take for granted. What sets apart each individual Starbucks is layout. If time allowed, I could easily see myself spending hours a day here on a project or reading a book. My only complaint is Mother Nature herself - in the winter months, way too much draft let in with the frequent coming and going of customers. THIS Starbucks is better than most locations because of the giant two-floor windows which let so much sun shine through into the always cozy bright double floors - bright, even on a foggy cloudy (TYPICAL) Newport day, and cozy even in the sweltering summer because of the way the store is situated on the corner... It's rich yellow in the mornings, bright white at high noon, orange at 3, tangerine at 4, and a cool, peerless fuschia by 7... I SEE THE LIGHT. And I hear the well worn 'blonde' wooden floors creak kindly, gently and 'antiquely' as I enter the store. Ok it's not a store, it's a cafe - but I liked writing it that way. See? Rhymes for dimes. Rhymes for dayyyys... Anyways! It's Starbucks! Like McD's/Dunkin/BK (Have it your way, right away)/Pizza Hut/D'Angelos/and whatever else...(Arby's!) you KNOW what you're going to get, from a user experience/product experience. They got mad controls on that ish. Spend billions of dollars ensuring the taste of cheese or burned beans stays the way it stays (for days!) from Cali to Idaho (who's a ho? I'm a ho...) to NEW YORK to Florida ('God's waiting room') to Mississippi to lil ole Rhode Island... Here in Newport, the coffee is no different than it is in Starbucks Paris (NOT, that I'd EVER have a Starbucks moment there...unless they were my client again and we were there together on business: but I think I've sufficiently pushed myself out of the market research sector by now). Anyways, that sameness? You can thank the IFF for that. I know I've mentioned them in other reviews, but to clarify here it stands for the "International Flavors and Fragrances" which is a team of global professional 'noses' in charge of everything from the smell of Tide to the taste of fries at chains worldwide. I love this Starbucks!! It is a two level Starbucks, with the top part being a balcony where you can people watch and look outside. I come upstairs where I can sit and study. There are lots of outlets for your electronics and lots of seating, including two comfy chairs. The downstairs can get a bit busy, being at the heart of Thames, in-between shopping, restaurants and across from the pier. If there is a line close to the door, expect to wait a while for your beverages, since everyone seems to order for more than one. Otherwise, staff is very friendly, everything is as clean as it can be, and well stocked. Drinks are always made to perfection and coffee is always fresh, which is a huge plus for me given their volume. read more

Great location and People watching. Meter parking is packed a lot of the times. Parking lots are around $20. But it is worth it because it's close to the harbor and there are so many shops around. Yes, I'm reviewing the Starbucks. The drinks are as usual-nothing notable here. But it's open til 9 (early by this city's standards) and had a 2nd floor with seating and outlets. I like the layout of this location, especially with the upper level overlooking the bottom level. However, service is slow & they mixed up our orders. They were happy to fix it, but still. This is probably my favorite Starbucks (location, service and building wise) I have been to in Rhode Island. I am not a huge fan of Starbucks in general anymore (I'd rather get my organic coffee somewhere else) but this location is great! The staff is always so friendly I have yet to have a bad experience the 5 or so times I have gone since moving to RI last spring. I love how it is two stories and normally I hate public restrooms but these are spotless! The drinks are also made perfect, and my soy no water chai tastes like a creamy dream. read more

Might be one of my favorite locations -- across the street from the wharfs, some of the finest Newport restaurants, and the ocean :) You'll find yourself in a 2 level store with lots of seating upstairs for viewing, relaxing or chatting. I think Bruce K hit the nail on the head. There being plenty of outlets, coffee, and wifi access at this Starbucks make it a good place in my book. I appreciated the opportunity to sit and collect myself for a couple hours -- and to recharge my phone and myself -- in the middle of a busy day of walking and touring all over Newport. The staff here seemed above-average friendly for a Starbucks, and the appearance of the restaurant was a plus. I didn't use the balcony seating area, but I appreciated that it was there, and it gave an already pleasant place a cheery quality. read more

Yes, I'm a regular! Once a year, I'd come here everyday for nearly a week. I don't know what it is about this particular Starbucks that makes it so attractive to me. Loved the open concept feel and bright colors. It was a pleasant surprise to the typical Starbucks. There was also a second floor seating which was unique to this location. I also enjoyed that this Starbucks is placed across the street from a park, if only there weren't two feet of snow on the ground and the middle of February then it would have been nice to sit out there and enjoy my caramel macchiato with soy and an extra shot of espresso. Which may I add was made perfectly and was a nice way to warm up. read more

As a former 'regular' of this SB's location for well over 5 years, I can say it's a fabulous location and meeting site for the locals as well as the marina folks and International sailors during the Spring-Fall seasons. Superb service, friendly staff and excellent selections even if a tad pricey! LOl and the fact 'Starbucks' supports the Satanic monster Monsanto in trying to stop food labeling bills in Vermont and Oregon, shame-shame-shame on you! Please write to their headquarters and petition them to cease and desist on that subject, or BOYCOTT their cafes..?? I love this Starbucks physically, but the staff are sub-par. They are nice people for the most part, but really don't seem to know what they are doing. I have been overcharged for drinks I order all the time, been given tea with a broken tea bag (multiple times), and had a hot tea refill where the barista simply refilled my old teabag and almost empty milky-tea with more water (?!). I find it hard to believe that tea (arguably the easiest beverage to make) can be messed up in so many ways. I have yet to meet the manager and I have been to this store many times, no business cards out, couldn't even tell you his/her name. I worked as a Starbucks barista for 1 year, so maybe I am a bit biased, but this store's employees are seriously not up to par. read more

Rudest staff I have ever encountered. Friday at about 5pm. I wanted a decaf coffee because 1. I love coffee but 2. I can't have caffeine that late. My boyfriend was getting an Americano and I totally was craving a yum hot beverage but as I just stated I wanted decaf. I asked the girl "do you guys have decaf?!" in a very nice and inquisitive tone. She (tall, side braid, brunette, rude) looked at me with the dirtiest annoyed look I have ever seen by an employee at any food establishment. She said "uuuhhhhhhhhhh...........no." I said "oh" she says "we do a pour over" I was like "uhhhhh......? Ok" she stared at me blankly. I said "I don't know what that means"...... Nonetheless, she made me the "pour over" coffee. Here comes the good part. She told me it would take 3 minutes. I said "no problem!!!!" I watched my coffee sit there on the counter for over 10 mins as she took customer after customer. It was done. It had BEEN done. My boyfriend had to say "we are waiting for the decaf" and she was like "oh yea ...." And grabbed it. My coffee sucked I threw it out. She ruined my experience. I will never return. I never knew it was such a big deal to ask for decaf. read more

Ordered a very very dry grande cappuccino. It unfortunately was made as a regular cappuccino with too much milk. The Middletown Starbucks is far superior. When they make a very dry cappuccino, its made with mostly foamed milk (very little liquid milk) and espresso. Perfect! read more

Location-wise, it is really hard to beat this place in terms of its location and the second-floor picturesque view of the nearby streets and the ocean. Otherwise the beverages are pretty consistent with what you'll find at any other Starbucks.. which is kind of nice when you get tired of seeing a Dunkin Donuts on every other street corner. read more
