This review is solely based on my experience with their safety checks. My safety check was embarrassingly long overdue and I desperately needed it. After calling a couple of other places where the qualifying agent seemed to leave early every day, I happened to see a cardboard sign on Dillingham Blvd that read something like "safety checks here. No appt needed". I was a bit apprehensive to go based on a cardboard sign, but was pleasantly surprised when I got there. The office is clean and air conditioned and the receptionist was welcoming and pleasant. There was one gentleman waiting for his car and I was told I would be next. The total time spent waiting in the office was about 15 minutes. It was awesome. The owner explained that they "move up" regular customers to do things like safety checks and brakes since the bulk of their business is done with big car companies so they don't have to necessarily finish those cars as quickly. I'm no car expert but the things I did notice and appreciate was their friendliness and their quick service. If I ever need a repair or maintenance, I will definitely consider Starkeys! read more

Went to get a safety inspection here about a month ago, they told me I needed a new brake light and new tires. They told me the estimate was about $1,500 for two new tires and a new brake light. I decided to do some research so my brake light only costed $160 and I got 4 new tires for $550(not sure where they got $1,500 from). So anyways, I bring my car back to get a reinspection and they tell me my window tint is too dark! Never had a problem with the windows the last time I came in and it had only been a couple weeks since I last came. I didn't get any tint on my windows either. It sounds like they just wanted to charge me again for something extra. Safe to say I'm never going back there, do not waste your time. read more

Late again!!! My safety check expired in April, so I drove over to Starkey's. Unlike last year, they said I needed my rack and pinion ($1,803) replaced and wheel alignment ($134) and failed my inspection. I was very confused cuz I never noticed any problems. I take very good care of my 2010 Toyota Tacoma (76,600 miles). Anytime I hear, see, or feel like something is wrong, I take it in. Did I miss something? I go outside to think about it and contemplate the pros and cons. Since it was Memorial Day, I thought maybe I should just do it and avoid the workday traffic. I walk back inside and notice two separate conversations: At the office door, customer #1 says: "You guy's worked on my brakes and now it's making noise ". At the service window, I notice customer #2 holding a 'voided' vehicle inspection form (like the one I got) and he's asking why his vehicle inspection failed. HUGE RED FLAG!!! I turned around and walked out. When I got home, I googled "when to replace rack and pinion" (100,000 miles, clunking noise, leaking power steering fluid, difficulty turning, shimmy at high speeds, etc). I never noticed any of these. I was so confused and frustrated, about the situation. So I called Lex Brodie in Kaneohe and was able to get an appointment the next day. Because I was issued a failed inspection, it did take longer; but after a thorough inspection, there was no problem with my steering. Last year, I gave Starkey's 5 stars for their quick, no appointment required safety check. But for the frustration, confusion, and unnecessary stress of having to "fix" my steering ($1900), they get one star (minus 5 if that was possible). Customers please BEWARE!!! read more

After a nice breakfast at Dillingham Zippy's, I drove off and went about my business heading west on Dillingham Blvd. And, lo and behold, there stood a large square sign advertising 'safety checks - no appointment needed!'. Instead of subsiding to my procrastination and continuing on past the sign, I decided to take a slight right into their parking lot. I pulled right up to their shop and was greeted by a friendly worker (Bill?). I told him I needed a safety check and he enthusiastically responded 'awesome, please provide me with the keys to the vehicle and sign in; we'll be right with ya'. A couple minutes went by and John, the shop owner came out to greet me. Bill jumped into my vehicle and drove it into their spacious garage. John escorted me to their super clean and air-conditioned lounge. Ten minutes later John came back with the completed safety check and several coupons for future car repairs. Paid over $600.00 , car ran fine for about 3 weeks, then same problem occurred! Took it back and the mechanic stated another possible problem but can't say for sure. Wants to charge over $500.. for a repair that he cannot guarantee is the problem. I decided not to have any more work done. I expressed that I was not happy and request half the money back . I got towed to Starkeys. I had an error message re: Transmission Fault." They said I needed a new battery!. It cost me $480.00. When I got in my car, the transmission error light was still on along with a system message saying I still had a transmission fault. I was able to limp home; the automatic gears were not shifting properly. I don't even know if they refilled by transmission fluid which looked bone dry and was the main reason I got towed there. My good friend said, "I think you got ripped off." I don't think they fixed or addressed my problem. I will go to the Ford Dealer tomorrow and find out. The tow guy recommended Starkeys on a Saturday. It just escalated from there. I also called twice and left messages to verify if they put in fluid and just forgot to mention it. read more

As advertised, safety check walkins accepted. Fast and easy. Reason why I gave them 5's is not cause of my safety but what I saw in the waiting room. One lady didnt know how to read her bill and was surprised at the cost. The gentleman ensured that this was the original copy she signed and went over the breakdown of work completed. She agreed she wasnt paying attention to the total. He apologized and offered her a coupon on her service. Then another elderly couple came in to pick up their car that could not be repaired. The mechanic said there will be no charge for them, and apologized nothing could be done. He also told them they will need to jump the car before he left which he did. Im not sure what the problem was, but the owner seemed to understand the reason. All this in the 10-15 minutes I saw while waiting for my safety. I admit I thought the thumbnail for this business was a tacky way to lure male customers in. No disrespect if thats the owner or the wife, but I thought it was sketchy. Totally opposite when you go there. The whole entire staff was nice and friendly and i highly recommend that shop. read more

1 star for the nice receptionist in the front. She seemed very sincere. However I have major complaints and a warning for especially elderly or ladies who come in on their own. These people totally tried to rip me off over a safety check. My husband had been a mechanic for years and has done several maintenance checks/jobs that he can on our cars...I took my car in for my yearly safety check since we moved and it seemed like a good spot. They took my car in and they ended up telling me I failed the check because I had over $3000 worth of work to fix on my car in order for my safety check to pass. That did not feel right to me at all! A rack and pinion fix for a safety check??? Give me a break... On top of that, I had to choose to get all that fixed within a few weeks in order to not be charged for another safety check almost implying they would be the most convenient choice to do it all. This was ridiculous. Immediately I went to another auto shop that I had heard was more trustworthy and they passed me on the fly. This made me even more upset that they try to pull crap like that on people. An elderly lady who had been there before me, was paying for her charges and seemed so shocked by how much she was paying for her part as well and questioned it, but of course had to pay it anyway...this place you should stay away from...unless you just need your tires filled... read more

Writing this review in hopes that others are detoured from our heart ache and troubles.. I don't know if they truly are incompetent or they just plain old scammed us.. Maybe they have some good mechanics here and we just got a bad one ? Who knows , all I know is that we went in for a AC repair/ estimate and came out with a car that is no longer even drivable.. Car had no issue but for the AC not blowing cold. Brought car in for diagnostics/quote for repairs. Was told they ran a "diagnostic for the AC" was quoted $3000 to repair. We declined this offer as the AC was just an inconvenience and we wanted to see what the cost to repair would be..(3000$ sounds steep as it just was not blowing cold) When driving home from repair shop , grey smoke bellowed out of front with a burning smell , also with a new rattling sound ( car had NO other issue previously) Had car towed to this " repair " shop at which point they stated they did not touch anything under the hood. They stated they only lifted the car and "looked" from under the vehicle. Inspected under the hood with said mechanic and his manager (?) I was aghast at what I saw.. I am a lei-men but clearly knew that things were not right.. There were several clasps found broken/removed, wrong sized cap placed/hanging on low compression valve.. oil found spilt on engine with tubing found disconnected..Which all were intact prior to taking to mechanic my husband and I looked under the hood the day before ( 2 people are witness to this ) The mechinc is admient that he did not touch anything under the hood... As he says this I watch his manager (?) flintch but he does nothing.. Either way they are untruthful. Either they did not look under the hood and did not run a diagnostic ( how do they run a diagnostic without checking coolant & pressure? What did we pay $190 for these people to do?) or they DID look under the hood and broke something. The car now no longer drives.. (My daughter just purchased this car with her own money...She just wanted AC to be fixed .. She did not have $3000 to spare but now she doesn't have a drive able car) They declined to correct issue. I kid you not .. This is what the manager told me.. " We can't fix everything wrong with the car" They would not even refund my daughter the " diagnostic " charge of $190 they charged her even though the mechanic admitted in front of the manager that he " did not touch anything under the hood" PLEASE be wary of this place.. I told my daughter she should have read all of the reviews before choosing this place.. My anger and frustration make me want to yell at this place for deceiving & taking advantage of my daughter and God knows how many other people!!! I hope that one day sirs ... Starkey's... that you are placed in a vulnerable situation and that the people who could potentially take advantage of you , do not ...and you look back on all those you have taken advantage of and feel remorse... read more

Using my wife's account to post this review. Just moved here for work and my car needed an oil change. I did not have all my equipment shipped out yet so I went ahead and got my oil change here. Brought my own oil and filter. Despite that, its still $32 for them just the do the oil change. I live close to work and rarely use my car, but did notice a puddle of oil in my parking area. Jacked up the car and turns out the oil filter was LOOSE. Not by a quarter of a turn or a full turn, but LOOSE to the point where eventually it would have fallen off, drain all the oil and toasted my engine. It was not tightened down at all. Took a couple of turns for me to tighten it. Ill be doing my own work from now on. If you're reading this, go somewhere else or do the work yourself. Better done right the first time. Unfortunately that technician is allegedly no longer working there. Doesn't matter, hire someone who double checks their work or have someone check it for them. A quick 1 minute check up is cheaper than paying for a whole engine. read more

I got a safety inspection done here and it was really quick and easy. I filled out a form, gave them my car insurance and registration, and in under 30 min they told me my car had passed the safety inspection. They also gave me a couple coupons for use the next time I go. I made an appointment, but it's not necessary. read more

BEWARE! These people don't know what they're doing. I was passing by when I saw their sign for safety inspections. Knowing that mine was going to expire soon I figured I'd stop in & have it done while I had the time. After filling out their form & giving them my paperwork I waited for awhile before the receptionist told me I "failed" for my tint. Now, knowing that my tiny was legal & never having an issue with it before, I insisted she was wrong. She told me she'd show me herself that I had illegal tint before escorting me to their dark warehouse they moved my truck into. She scanned my front passenger window & said it was indeed, too dark & when I told her that it was wrong she said there were probably other reasons why they guys passed me last year. Wow. Talk about unprofessional! They also then made me pay $26.17 for failing me!!! Fast forward a week after I came back from a trip. My boyfriend told me to go to the place he's been going to for years.....Bee Auto Truck Repair. Yes, it's all the way out in Nanakuli. But I was in town when I went to Starkeys & we recently moved to the west side so I didn't think too much of the drive as it was only another 5 mins down the road. After a long wait at Bee's, it was finally my turn. I was so nervous to hand Uncle my failed inspection, but he was very nice & told me let's see what the scanner says.....he checked my info in the system before starting. Then scanned my windows & guess what. I passed! Turns out the idiots at Starkey's put the wrong information about my truck in the system. They entered the wrong license plate which came up as a car, which, anyone who knows tinting laws in Hawaii knows car windows have to be a lot lighter than truck windows. This company, the receptionist who entered the wrong license plate in the system & the person conducting the inspection weren't even smart enough know the difference between a full size truck and a small car! I wouldn't trust Starkeys for any automotive needs as they clearly didn't know how to even do a simple safety check correctly They are out to rip people off! read more

My car overheat while i was driving and i was recommended to starkeys. My car was diagnosed with a blown head gasket and was a costly and timely repair. They were responsive and kept me updated. It's only been a few days but my car feels better to drive. I will definitely come back if my car starts acting up again. Fingers crossed that it won't be any time soon though. read more

This is an updated review. They get you with a fast and reasonably priced safety check. Then when you go back for other services everything costs more than 2x what it would cost at a fair shop. They charge a $150 diagnostic fee for everything - for me it made sense for my engine light and they even talked me into it to diagnose the shaking from my steering wheel. I learned later other shops diagnose it for free then just quote you for the work. Then when I brought it in and told them about my trunk latch being stuck, they tried to charge me $150 for that as well and that's when I started to question their pricing tactics. That's $450 for them to not even start work on the car yet if you're keeping track. They ended up telling me I had to change all four tires to get rid of the shaking from the steering wheel, but what they didn't know was that I had recently changed out two of the tires. The quote was almost $600. Then I went to another shop and they rotated the tires and told me I'd have to eventually change the other two tires, and the shaking was fixed. I pretty much paid $300 for them to tell me what was causing my engine light to go off, and for them to try to rip me off of $600. My initial review was because I was so happy they fixed my turn signal. They charged their diagnostic fee of $120 (they upped it significantly since then) then I realized how easy of a job it was and normal places would've charged me closer to 60. I also ended up getting my trunk latch fixed for $65. I should've been more skeptical when they charged me $1000 to fix my window and change brake pads. I will never go back. Please proceed with caution. read more

I would give them a zero or negative star if it was possible. I had to get my safety check done. I first went to Jiffy Lube and had it inspected. Inspection passed, but their computer system was down. So I went down the road to Starkey's. Huge mistake! They failed me, they said my front tires needed to be replaced. Did the penny test where you put the penny head upside down into the thread and if you can see the whole top of the head, that's a fail. If part of the hair is in the thread, that's a pass. My tires could have lasted another year. They charged me for the inspection and said I have 29 days to get it done and re-inspected. I had 2 new tires installed and went down to Starkey's. Told the girl in the front that I had 2 new tires installed and needed it to get re-inspected. She took my papers and asked for my keys. I waited in their waiting room for over an hour. She finally acknowledged my presence and asked me what I was waiting for and what type of vehicle I owned. HUGE RED FLAGS went up. My first thoughts were, Oh No, here we go. This place is a JOKE. She went outside to check on my Van. The next thing I knew this guy comes in and said that I was good to go. He said he didn't know who's Van it was. So why didn't he tell the girl my Van was done and my papers and keys are in the Van. My Van is a work Van with expensive tools and materials in it. That idiot left both my front windows down, my papers and keys inside. This is Friday, the day of the heavy rain, right before New Years Eve. Me papers got soaked, my seats all wet. The thing that I cannot understand is why would you roll down the windows to inspect my tires, and why would it take that long. I will never ever go back there and I will tell all my friends and clients to stay away from there. I wished I checked the Yelp reviews before I went there. From now on I will do my homework. I have an older BMW and she can be temperamental at times and I swear she breaks down just to see zack. She has become monogamous as Zack can read her like a book. I wanted to leave a good review but I cannot. There was issues with my daughter's car and Choice Automotive recommended my daughter to Starkey's. Maybe it's not so much Starkey's fault but telling us to call Choice Automotive to help resolve issues with how they charged my daughter a balance, when all my daughter wanted was for them to do what the cost of the warranty would cover. But she ended up with a balance of $777. Now the warranty paid $547.52 and they had to minus the $184.28 because the invoice that was given to my daughter said they fixed the alignment. But it wasn't done. So, kind of good I was there to talk to them or else my daughter them would've been charged for something that wasn't done. They held my daughter's husband check as hostage so that they couldn't leave until they got paid. Now the labor, is $228.79 to remove and replace an ignition coil. 4 Laser indium spark plugs was $178.28 and 1 ignition coil is $193.89. I mean heart attack prices with the labor cost. Then, it cost $205.90 for labor cost to remove and replace front suspension shock or strut for one side, and the OESpectrum strut- right, is $282.15. I know businesses needs to get paid but there is a shop who would've done it way less. My daughter is living paycheck to paycheck like everyone else but this is ridiculous. Rent due on the 1st but they need their car. Now let's talk about the car. This car was bought from Choice Automotive and not even 4 months and this car falling apart. What a rip off! We were told by Starkey's that the tires were mismatched causing the car to pull right. Which we all know that it also can cause alignment issues. We called Choice Automotive and was told we can call the cops for Starkey's working on stuffs that they weren't supposed to do if it wasn't approved. So the 2 businesses was telling us to check with the other. Choice Automotive told Starkey's there was nothing they can do. After going back and forth with these 2 businesses, I am not recommending any one I know, to go there. In the end, we were still charged $593.51 when all they wanted was what the warranty covered without mentioning that the labor cost would break the bank. read more
