So this is my lovely husband's old stomping grounds as he graduated from Humboldt State University, it holds a special place in his heart so whenever we go to Arcata we eat here. The food is good, I'd say it's pretty expensive for what you get, but the most noticeable thing is that the employees are never friendly. Like I've been about four times and never once was anyone friendly while taking our order. That's not to say these people aren't good people, maybe they just work them too hard there? Maybe that's the cool vibe, to be edgy and unfriendly to customers? Either way, I'm sure we will be back. read more

An employee named Angi bullied my employee when she called in for a to-go order. My employee was literally in tears because of how Angi had treated her. I knew that she was not exaggerating because Angi had previously treated me that way on the phone too. When confronted with the bullying, Angi denied having ever mistreated anyone, and that was comical because she has a long history of being rude and abusive and passive-agressive to customers on the phone. She's even nasty to employees of the other Stars in Eureka, when they call. Her reputation got around. She then went on to spin the story to make herself the victim, and when I told them that I would contact the owner, they refused to give me his contact info. Not only that, but she had her manager ban me from the store for whistle-blowing. The young manager first taunted me with pathetic dominance displays meant to humiliate me, while claiming that it doesn't matter what I tell his boss because the owner would "believe my word over yours all day", but that ended up humiliating himself and this Arcata branch of Stars. It showed what unethical and poor judgement the hired staff have, and what incompetent leadership the branch has been left in the hands of. This comes after raw sewage had leaked from plumbing problems that were not being fixed for far too long, and the fluorescent light in the parking lot was flickering/strobing enough to cause a seizure for most of a year, with no attempt to fix it. It should be noted that when customers who have been eating there weekly for many years, and who have been customers for longer than the manager has been alive, are retaliated against for whistle blowing, the owner loses significant amounts of money annually. We tell our friends. More the point, we give our money to the Eureka branch of Stars (different ownership) who do a better, more consistent job making the food well, are always friendly and honest, maintain the safety and hygiene of the branch, and are honorable people in general. read more

I've been eating here for 30 years and never had a bad meal. That's saying a lot since I'm a vegetarian eating at a burger joint. Only once last week have they ever accidentally given me a meat burger and they replaced it all super friendly and I ended up keeping the meat burger which I gave to a coworker to their total delight. You can even order the Mediterranean chicken salad vegetarian and it's so darn good. I love the Lichenstein prints and the hot tattooed bears that cook the food.It's hard to find good help in Humboldt but they always manage to have friendly, happy service that makes eating out worth it. 5 star food, 2 star service, 2 star prices. In my honest opinion this is the best burger in the area, hands down. The prices are just ridiculous, even for a grass fed beef patty. Two bacon cheese combos with tip easily runs $40+ dollars. At that point I might as well hit up a sit-in restaurant with better service for the same price. I understand costs are high right now, but this is just out of hand price gouging. I really hesitate to write this review, but the owner should listen to its customers and try somehow to lower prices. I see many others agree the prices are insane. Don't understand the high reviews of this place! Very simple order of bacon/blue cheese burger basket, a curry chicken sandwich and a bare burger patty for my pups, and 2 ice teas. Over 35$. The burger was so over cooked it was crisp, crunchy and tasteless, the fries so undercooked that they were limp and barely warm. The chicken sandwich was also dry as a bone and even the curry was bland. The pups burger was so well done it cracked like a pretzel. However being dogs they loved it. lol. After paying I noticed a sign posted on the wall saying seniors received a 10% discount. When I called it to their attention they refused to honor it saying it was too late because I had already paid. Well Stars is a total write off. Don't recommend it to anyone. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite after visiting the Redwoods NP. We were hoping for an In n Out burger, but the nearest is in Eureka and we were staying in Arcata for the night. After reading the reviews on Yelp we thought this would be the next best thing! They have a parking lot behind the restaurant, which was nice as most other nearby businesses have to rely on street parking for their customers. Their restroom was clean, minus all the graffiti. The dining area inside was small and clean. They also have a small outdoor seating area with maybe 3 tables. Staff was friendly while placing order. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger basket (upgraded the drink to a vanilla shake), and an Ortega burger. The burgers were nice size and cooked slightly overdone. We liked the multigrain buns...they were nice and soft. There was a generous amount of bacon on the bacon cheeseburger, but one thin piece of lettuce, which was wilted by the time it was served, and very little to no mayo. The Ortega burger had good flavor, but again, one thin piece of wilted lettuce and thin sliced tomato. They were generous with the onions though. The fries were good, not greasy. The milkshake was a smoothie consistency. It may be preference, but I like a thick milkshake. Overall a decent experience. We weren't wow'd by any means...maybe the hype on Yelp raised our expectations, or maybe we've experienced awesome burgers that are hard to top. Not sure, but if you're looking for a decent burger for a decent price, this may be for you. read more

If you're looking for outstanding food with friendly service, I highly recommend Stars Hamburgers. We both ordered the Veggie basket with onion rings and ranch dressing. We've been to over a dozen different restaurants looking for the best veggie burger, and we just found it at Stars! The fresh bun along with the juicy veggie patty and perfect amount of mustard, ketchup, mayo with chopped onion, tomato and lettuce make for a top notch experience. Fabulous burger!!! And the fries are great too. Open kitchen so you can see the man making your food, I always enjoy seeing the cook. Relatively stark seating area but the music was easy pop and not making conversation difficult. Pleasant staff. You order at the counter but they deliver your food to the table. We both had the Ortega burger with cheese. So juicy you have to lean over the basket it comes in to catch the drips. Definitely worth a stop. read more

The prices in Stars Hamburgers has gone up so much that I doubt I'll ever go there again. I ordered a plain hamburger with onion rings and they gave me a can of ginger ale to go with it. The "healthful bun" they used to have is now white bread. I didn't have any cheese on the hamburger and the order of onion rings was skimpy at best. The cost for this, with a senior discount, was $15 and they wanted a tip! A tip for what? They didn't do anything and I had to self-service the table I ate at before I left. I used to be their customer but no more as I strongly dislike price-gouging and yes, I left a small tip in their jar after they brought it to my attention! Sad to see this place like this. I went for my lunch break, there was no one else in there and somehow it took more than 10 minutes to get my food. Oh it was because the food was left on the counter, the girl at the front counter was too busy chatting with coworkers that she forgot to give me my order. I've come to realize as an outsider, stars is Arcata fast food burger. And it nails it at that! Smaller Pattie's, but solid construction, held up form through takeout and drive back home and didn't make me feel as awful as a Toni's burger after the fact. For the price point, I think it's the best burger in town. Maybe not the best burger period, but for the price point, it's understated. My partner and I got the Guacamole, Cheese & Bacon burger and it is as delicious as it sounds. For the fries, ask for them to be well done if you like your fries with a bit more of a crunch. I can get a hand crafted 16oz malt or milkshake for 5.25 at Tony's restaurant in town. I had purchased two blindly.... that's $14.50 for two really basic vanilla dryers milkshakes wtf. 8oz Soda used to be fountain now its a can. I can get 18 Pepsi cans from safeway on a five dollar Friday deal. They want a dollar twenty-five for one can. No cup. No ice. No straw. No refills. The Cajun fries are spiced unevenly. Some fries had too much and some none. I mentioned nicely to one of the workers how I used to come here when fountain soda was an option, and I pointed out the insane price of the milkshake. She didn't seem to feel empowered enough to take feedback to share with the local restraunt owners. She kinda gave the "I just work here " vibe. I expect that from a corporate chain and not a local burger joint. It's like they hate working there, which I get because retail. It isn't their fault, it's the local owners' fault for not creating a nirtuwork environment and making them feel part of the business rather than just workers. A super-old-school hamburger joint in all the right ways. Stars isn't doing the social-media-fodder mega burger thing. They're not doing the wacky gourmet burger thing. They're doing a perfect execution of the burger shops of the nostalgic past. The burgers are of completely reasonable size for a normal appetite, and feature a completely reasonable amount of toppings. They use high quality beef, cooked when you order, a reasonable but not huge selection of topping options, and nice fluffy buns that aren't trying to be anything but a hamburger bun. And they're extremely consistent--in probably two decades coming here I have never gotten a disappointing burger. Likewise for the fries--simple and good. The milkshakes and malts are also absolutely top-notch--they use real ice cream (Dryer's, I think), real milk, and a scoop of real malt for a malt. They're a reasonable size, neither too big nor too small. Plus (if you're not getting take-out) they're served just like in the old days. To quote my born-in-the-1920s dad: "Back when I was young, it used to be they would bring your malt out in a glass with the metal container they used to mix it with the extra that didn't fit in the glass.
