Food was really great. But the service was really lacking. Slow. Utensils not provided when we were seated. Utensils were not brought when asked for them when appetizer was brought. Luckily that was mostly finger food. Took two more requests to get utensils and only got them after the main meal was delivered. No one seemed very concerned with us having to request 3 times to get utensils. They were not very busy at the time. Also, had to flag the waitress down to request our check after we had waited and waited and she had not returned to our table. Edit - Management reached out and obviously are interested in providing great service. This was probably an odd day out for them. Came here for dinner and it was just ok. We had the bacon avocado burger and the fish & chips special. The burger was nothing special, they spread the avocado like a jam spread on the top bun and the bottom bun was soggy from the juice of the patty. The fish and chips weren't terrible. The fish had a nice flavor, but we didn't like the breading that much, and the fries were nothing to brag about. Overall, I think we would come here for drinks, but not the food. Having found this place because it's the place next to my favorite cocktail bar Parliament and also on many websites regarding best happy hours, I am glad we gave it a try. Employees were super friendly and had a nice outdoor space. One thing I did not understand, they had NO outdoor speakers. Who has an outdoor space and doesn't play any light music? Beyond that though, the place was nice and tables were spaced out. Some fans facing certain tables as well. Happy hour was the best part. No food specials anymore at the moment, but some drink specials. $3.50 beers and wells from 3-7 M-F as well as random drink specials throughout the week. Some of the cheapest in the area, although the drinks aren't the biggest it sure is nice to have. For appetizers, we had the chips and salsa and the chicken tenders. Chips and salsa was almost a joke, small portion and the salsa was almost like water. However, the tenders were a different story. Super moist, appeared to be homemade, and great fries. The $12 portion game with friends and we counted 6 decent size tenders. Good ranch as well. Stop by for some happy hour $3.50 drinks and sit outside. Came here for Brunch on a rainy Sunday. Food & Drinks Pizza- it was good. We totally ate the whole thing, but it wasn't special. Size was on the smaller end. Bigger than a personal pie, but by no means a large. Crust was on the thinner side as well. Chicken and Waffles - Chicken portion was tiny. I think it was two chicken strips from the appetizer. Mine was ok, but another member of our group said their chicken was very dry. Waffle was pretty good, but I think it was one waffle cut into the four pieces. Calamari - little in the greasier end. Mix of rings and tentacles with carrots and peppers thrown on top for color. Charcuterie- 3 meats and a couple jams and such. Meat was pretty good. Cheese plate - 3 cheeses. Not very many pieces but they were larger pieces. Served with grapes, pickled berries and nuts. The selection varies per day, but the cheddar when we were there was ok. The cheese seemed to have that I've been left out for a bit feel to it. Service It was ok. Our server definitely forgot to ring in some of our food for a while. Atmosphere This spot is much bigger than it appears, and it gets busy. There are three rooms. One is like a traditional bar area with high top tables and is pretty crowded. The second also had a bar, and the host stand. The third looks like it is more for private events but also works as a dining room. It was raining when we went but there is a patio as well. read more

The location can't be beat, located in a very walkable neighborhood where it seems like everyone was outdoors. Had the breakfast pizza and it was phenomenal, opted to do scrambled eggs instead of having a runny egg on top out of personal preference. Came for brunch with my girlfriends. The food was great. I ordered the chicken and waffles and it was so good. We also got several champagne bottles for mimosas and they were very affordable. We sat outside but the only con is that they don't have a lot of tables that are in the shade or umbrellas. The service was good but the main con is their parking situation. Let's start with the positives : came during happy hour and there were drinks that were fairly cheap. Breakfast is served until 3p I believe. Parking was pretty good considering there is a garage right next door( that limits the walking you have to do.) Negatives: Ordered the crab cakes and the French toast on the side . Taste wasn't anything amazing. French toast taste actually pretty soggy- maybe due to it being on banana bread. Secondly our server was a bit strange, she had a poor attitude(not sure if she was just having a bad day or perhaps just didn't feel like being at work) nonetheless our experience wasn't the best with her. Every request we made , simple ....common request e.g "syrup, utensils, refills" seemed to make her visibly angry. Anyway overall , due to the food not being that impressive and the customer service not being that great either. I don't see why I would come back but as always I'd say give it a try! read more

Overall the vibe of State and Allen is really fun. In a fun part of uptown and they have great outdoor seating. Each of us enjoyed the food we got! I got the Monterey and my Husband got the crab cakes (way smaller than we anticipated which was a bummer). Drip coffee was good too. You do have to request water if you want it. Huge bummer was the service. Our waitress was really kind but they just have their staff waiting on too many tables. You had to flag down any staff member to get help and wait another 30 minutes for that thing to happen. One of our meals came out 20 minutes after the rest because it was forgotten. One friend asked for potatoes that was forgotten and when she brought up that it was not brought out they said they would bring them to her and they never brought them out. We asked for hot sauce twice because it was not brought out and when it was our meal was over. This was not only happening to us but also each table around us. It felt like everyone was desperate to find a server because of an error in their meal/needing something else and they were no where to be found. Our waitress was also training someone and he made a rude comment to my friend, he did apologize but still. Even with two people waiting on us there were so many errors and trouble getting ahold of someone to help us. I am a fan of State & Allen. I went here for brunch with a couple of friends the other week, and had an overall enjoyable experience. We must have got there right in the middle of the rush. It took a while for our server to stop by our table, but once she came around, everything was great. We started out with the mimosa bar, which is a fantastic deal, except we were seated quite far from the mimosa bar area. So I ended up not going back to get more juice and fruit and my mimosa kept getting more champagne-y as I refilled my glass with the champagne at the table without adding more juice. I had the omelet calabrese. Now that I'm typing it, that spelling of omelette is really weird to me, but anyhow, the dish was delicious. I love pesto and fresh mozzarella, so it was perfect for me. I saw pictures of the crab cakes and they looked good, so next time, I might try that. read more

This is my second visit, and it happens to be during the winter whiskey tasting. For starters, Amber deserves a shout out for being helpful, friendly, and went over the top to ensure our experience was top notch. We stumbled on State and Allen tonight about 9:40pm. Kitchen was closing at 9:45. The wait staff was wonderful! They helped us get our order in quickly so we would be able to have some appetizers with our wine (1/2 price wine on Wednesdays - score!). I was very impressed with the service and the food was really good. A lot of restaurants wouldn't have served us, but they went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We will definitely go back!! I can tell it's a trendy place that is very popular and stays packed. This is a good sign and we were off to a good start. I made reservations and when we all arrived our table was ready. Parking in the area can be a bit challenging so plan ahead and allow a few extra minutes. Our waiter Jonah did very good handling the group of 8 people. He was friendly and overall service was good. The majority of the table ordered chicken and waffles. It was pretty good and you couldn't beat the price. You get a lot of FOOD. It was a very good value. It comes with a nicely fried chicken breast, waffle and 2 eggs. The syrup is yummy to the tummy, along with the flavored soft butter. The others ordered omelettes and potatoes, with a side of bacon. The omelette was nicely cooked. We also shared a cheese board. It had some delicious artisanal cheese. I really enjoyed the cheese. I'm also a cheese head. We closed our meal out, with sharing the triple dip. It came with southwest hummus, spinach artichoke dip, tomato-gets salsa, and tortilla chips or pita bread. It was fantastic. I recommend both of these for sharing. Brunch drink specials were awesome. Mimosas were $2.50 good deal. They offered other drinks for $3.00 and you had a choice of Tequila Sunrises, Greyhounds, Screwdrivers and a $5.00 Bloody Mary Bar. So overall we had a good experience. I left happy and full. The Charcuterie Board and Cheese Tray are worth mentioning for appetizers worth sharing! I heard praise for various salads and pasta dishes, as well as the chicken sandwich - and my Bison & Cheese Sandwich was excellent. Basic sides included fries, sweet potato fries, or fruit. Full drink menu; eclectic beer mix and interesting mixed drinks. The Chocolate Martini was a hit with the ladies! Kudos to our bartender; he looked up my 'Ward 8' on request, and made a great one on the fly! For dessert; the Flourless Chocolate Cake (w strawberries and ice cream) was worth re-ordering! Yummm! The space is in a fantastic location in State Thomas and the restaurant it self has a social atmosphere which I enjoyed. The food itself was good, not great and the prices were reasonable along with that. The true thorn in S&A's side is the atrocious service. The restaurant is clearly understaffed with the waitstaff being forced to cover way too many tables. Ordering required multiple attempts to flag down our waitress and once received it was another 40+ minutes for our food to arrive. The icing on the cake being that the entree they brought my girlfriend was not what she ordered and resulted in an additional 15 minute wait for them to correct that. Likely won't be back. read more

I had always wanted to try State & Allen since I really like the location and they have a lot of gluten free options for my boyfriend. However, my experience was underwhelming and I have no desire to dine there again. I made a reservation for my boyfriend and friends for a Saturday night to celebrate his birthday. I found it strange that the restaurant was mostly empty on a Saturday night. The restaurant service was not great and at the end of the night I felt I had been nickled and dimed. We also had a hard time tracking down our waitress to order and she seemed generally unhappy to be there. Our group ordered various cocktails that were okay, but we agreed they were pretty weak drinks. We also ordered the appetizer dips which came with pita and chips. I asked for some carrots/celery to provide more variety for our gluten free eaters. We were later charged a fee for the veggies, which surprised me because the waiter didn't mention anything. I mentioned to the waiteress that we were celebrating a birthday and asked if they had any candles or a birthday dessert. She told me yes but they do not offer anything for free. In the end we ended up spending $50/person which I feel is a poor value based off our mediocre experience. I do not recommend this place for celebrating a special occasion out birthday. read more
