There are NO deli's that I aware of in Grand Rapids. Once upon a time there was at least one that was pretty good. Long gone. If you want corned beef or pastrami, greasy grocery store deli meat just doesn't cut it. Checking Yelp delis. I looked in every direction and decided to drive to East Lansing as my corned beef withdrawal pains were getting worse. Stateside Deli sits in a shopping plaza a few miles southeast from MSU. When we arrived both booths and tables were available just after the lunch rush. Just guessing, i'd say there are between 25-30 tables and booths. Even though I didn't need to, I studied the menu knowing that I would probably only get corned beef or pastrami. The soups however looked great as well. I ordered my corned beef extra lean partially as a test and mostly because that is how I like it. Served on toasted rye, that' is exactly how it came. My first bites were euphoric. It only got better. My wife ordered half a sandwich (tuna melt on wheat) along with matzah ball soup. She loved hers as well. I can tell because both the bowl and plate were empty when she was done. She will often not finish if the food is "just OK" Service was excellent and "seamless". One server saw my drink almost empty and quickly returned with another. Another server asked if we needed anything as she was walking by. Our server also kept checking with us to see if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our lunch. If this is the closest deli, so be it. We will be back as often as practical. Only drawback is the hour drive each way and approximately $28 worth of gas. read more

Oh my god. I love this place. I almost don't want to give it away because they run out of my favorite item sometimes They have an enormous menu! The service has been wonderful every single time I have dined in or out and their energy is great. THEY HAVE GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS! They have halal options?! The guys on the grill work so hard i don't know how they do it, bravo guys you are the heart of Stateside The reuben sandwiches... the D-Town. The russian dressing. The coleslaw. The sauerkraut. Traditional diner in Okemos with a large selection of breakfast and lunch options. We were there for breakfast and had the Southwest Burrito and the Lox Bagel. Both were solid, but nothing above and beyond. Service was very quick and attentive, food was served within about 10 minutes of ordering. Inside was a simple diner with both booth and table options. We really enjoyed it! The food was tasty and homemade. They had vegetarian and even vegan options and although they were made with packaged meat substitutes they were generous and well cooked. The potato tots were especially good though seasoned fries maybe had a little too much seasoning. The weight staff was really friendly and responsive. It's a pretty plain spot spot inside, but reminded me of a classic New York deli. There is some outdoor seating, booths, and tables. This might be a long review but it's just the way I feel. I'm 76 years old and my mother raised me and my eight siblings waiting tables, so I'm pretty sure I know how a little bit about service. First my wife and I showed up at about 3:30 there were several people seated at three different tables two waitresses , one very young but I'm sure capable cook. We ordered and drinks were brought to us, so far so good. My wife's order was a smash burger, I ordered the famous hot corn beef sandwich. We sat at table number six looking straight at the kitchen. Pretty soon the cook put up a smash burger our waitress disappeared no where to be found. Other waitress ignored the smash burger and took care of the other customers. Looney Tunes was on tv and I watched a roadrunner cartoon (10 minutes) then my hot corn beef sandwich was put under the warmer along with a few other things. Waitress 2 served every thing except our food. My wife got up to go find our waitress, waitress 2 stopped her and said she would take care of us. As she was bringing us our food I asked if the order was still hot as it had been setting for a ten minutes. She snapped back that the food had not been sitting at all. Then she goes back to chat with the young cook to tell him we complained. Then our waitress showed back up and the two of them started talking to each other and watched as we ate our food. So happy to have finally found someplace that is worth all the hype around here. I have had my eye on this restaurant since we moved into the area last year. We finally made our way over to the quaint little strip mall where Stateside calls home. We were greeted by the gentleman who we assumed was the owner. What a sweet man he is and so absolutely kind. You can tell he loves his customers and he made us feel right at home, even our two crazy toddlers. My husband and I each ordered a different sandwich and split them. They were both so delicious we couldn't decide which one we liked better. I'm always skeptical about coleslaw because there are so many bad ones out there, but the Price is Right was absolutely delicious. The slaw was perfectly balanced and complimented the corned beef and pastrami nicely. My husband ordered the Spencer's Reuben and it was by far the best Reuben we have ever had. We just couldn't get enough, although both sandwiches were absolutely huge in size. The amount of meat they put on them is beyond generous. Out of the sides we ordered, we liked the tots over the fries. We would definitely get those again. We can't wait to go back already and maybe just maybe we will get something new, like the lamb gyro or tuna melt. Fast and friendly service, amazing and fresh food...what's not to love? read more

In town for work and swung by to grab a philly cheesesteak and a a cup of the chicken noodle soup. Both were VERY delicious. I would say if you are going to order carry out- call ahead. I waited 20 minutes and it didn't seem that crowded inside but maybe they had a ton of online orders. I tried this place for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and I'd be up for giving them another shot. We ordered two vegan sandwiches for takeout - a vegan Ruben and vegan Philly cheesesteak both with small modifications and they were ready just a few minutes after the pickup time. The front of house staff were kind and friendly when I arrived, but upon returning home with the food I discovered that neither one of the sandwiches were modified according to our order. Made my 2nd visit here today (12/27)/23.) The first visit was for a Ruben Sandwich (EXCELLENT) and homemade chili (a complete miss - very bland tasting - will remember this the next time.) The single reason for this 2nd visit was the promise of homemade corned beef hash for breakfast. And it was good - not the absolute best that I have ever had, but better than anything that I have found in the area. It is made from scratch - this is easy to tell. But the poached eggs!! FANTASTIC!!! I almost asked to go into the kitchen to watch the chef's technique! Great, friendly service. I will continue to return when in town. One star deducted for two reasons: (1) home fry style potatoes - I prefer hashbrowns and I think that this would add to the dish. (2) I asked for tomato juice and without asking, they served V8...in a can. Took me a long long time to finally try this place but once I did, I've been back twice. Service is seat yourself, menus on table, server comes. There are pictures so it makes ordering easy. Before people start whining about the sandwiches being expensive, they literally give you so much meat if you had another couple slices of bread you could make two. I had the matzo ball soup. Something rare around here. It was a good broth, the matzo ball a bit denser than I'd like, but what gets me (because second time I came I got the broccoli cheddar) is that these soups come out lukewarm. I wish they were hotter. Try the pastrami sandwiches or the combo with the corned beef. You won't go wrong. Meaty and huge. You're not gonna find that around here. Good dressing. Good slaw. I remember enjoying Stateside Deli when I was in college but I think that location has since closed. Nate and I were driving back to Grand Rapids from Ann Arbor recently and needed a late lunch. We chose Stateside Deli over the Panchero's next door, and I'm really glad we did! I love Panchero's, but it was nice to get a tasty deli sandwich fix since Zingerman's in Ann Arbor was a little too busy and we couldn't find parking there. There is a nice-sized dining area here with plenty of easy parking in the lot. We were greeted right away by our server, who was very friendly and helpful. I ordered a 1/2 sandwich and soup combo, with the #1 Famous: corned beef, swiss, coleslaw, and Russian dressing on rye, with the matzo ball soup ($2 up charge). Nate got the #4 Price is Right: corned beef, pastrami, coleslaw, swiss, and Russian dressing on rye, with a side of fries. Our food came out quickly and it was picture perfect - the sandwiches were stacked high and everything was super fresh. I enjoyed the #4 most - it really is a different sandwich with the addition of the pastrami. Both sandwiches were generously sized and you could definitely split one sandwich between two people if you're not super hungry. The matzo ball soup was not the best I've had - the matzo ball could have been a bit more tender, but I liked the addition of the wide noodles. Stateside Deli is tucked away in a generic strip mall almost seemingly hiding from the world, but people seem to know all about it based upon how busy it was on a Sunday morning. The food was very good, and the portions are generous. The corned beef was lean and delicious. Good coffee too. Everyone at our table of seven had something different, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Looking for lunch in or around Okemos? Trust the Yelp reviews and head here. It's a classic Jewish deli located in a strip mall. The interior is a little spartan (pun intended) but maintained and clean. I ordered The Famous. Got it with grilled bread, side of tots, and a Coke Zero. The Coke Zero isn't officially on the menu, but it is available from their takeout fridge if you ask. The sandwich is a huge portion of tasty corned beef.
