I stopped by Stax Cafe for their soft opening. They actually open tomorrow, Wednesday, July 11. This is their river west location. My server, Ashton, mentioned it was only her third day working. She was phenomenal! Super friendly and was able to discuss the menu. She was great! I ordered a hazelnut iced coffee, the lumberjack skillet with white toast, and a side of mini chocolate chip peanut butter pancakes with banana! I'm going to have to stop back in to try their raspberry whites chocolate chip pancakes and I'll ask for Ashton! ^^ Sad to find this in my drafts over a YEAR LATER! The food was great. I'll start there. The location is awesome too. Easy to get to. Inside, it's loud. I don't know how to review the service because the whole thing was a bit chaotic. We put our name in. They told us it would be a ten minute wait. They were spot on. We were seated quickly. Our server came to visit us, asked if we wanted coffee. We all said yes that would be great. He left, and brought back water for the table. He came back five minutes later with coffee and then asked if we were ready to order. We gave him our order, he turned around to the POS system, forgot our order, turned around got our order again, then put it in the system. We had a couple of coffee refills while waiting for our meals to come out. Then one meal came out. No one else's. Come to find out, it was for the table next to ours. It just so happened to be the same thing we ordered. The server from the other table came, took the plate, went to put it on the correct table, but then was told he couldn't do that and gave it back to us. Our server apologized for the mix up. My favorite thing about Stax is their small patio. Nothing beats breakfast outside on a beautiful day. On weekends, scoring a table outside isn't easy. But weekdays, there's often never a wait. The longest I've ever had to wait for an inside table is 10 minutes, and that was on a Sunday morning. They have a full breakfast and lunch menu, but I always get breakfast, usually an omelette or the chilaquiles. If you want a carb splurge, the monte cristo waffle is obscene. Last week when it was 93 and humid, my friend and I opted for inside. We each had the build your own omelette (choose three ingredients from lots of options), and they were perfect. I substituted the potatoes and bread for ripe and juicy tomatoes (still nine pounds of Covid weight left to lose). We had a great waitperson. She refilled our coffee three times without having to ask. Street parking... there are a few free spots but the easiest are the paid ones on Milwaukee. They seem to do a ton of pick-up and delivery orders here, which will be especially great this winter. read more

My second time here; I decided on something savory instead of sweet. The California club was AMAZING. The avocado was so fresh, the bacon extra crispy, and so flavorful. It came with fries on the side that were seasoned with something salty and slightly spicy. We came in about 2:30 and our service was fast. Price is accurate for the food you get. OMG!!! What an awesome find on Yelp! This is the place for breakfast in Chicago's River West. The Stax Cafe was a hit from the moment we walked in. With Nora Jones and Ed Sheeran serenading us we enjoyed an incredible lunch of Pepper Jack BLTS with seasoned fries. This place is a must visit when in Chicago! Perfect cafe! The inside is so cute, the patio is a great size and also adorable. We had a hard time deciding what to eat. Went to the River West location service was good, food tasted great I ordered the honey ricotta French toast and I wasn't entirely a fan. I didn't know ricotta had green pieces in it (not referring to the pistachios). The fresh squeezed orange juice is absolutely delicious. Came here for a work event the other day. I ended up getting the adult grilled cheese, which comes with two different types of cheese, avocado, bacon, and blueberry jam. I was hesitant but my friend had convinced me to get this and I am glad I did! The blueberry jam was an interesting addition but it worked well with the sandwich. The avocado was creamy and fresh, and the bacon/cheese combo hit the spot. The fries were nicely seasoned and had a nice crunch. Ordered it to-go (important to add as this definitely affects the quality, but I did eat pretty immediately after picking up as I live close by) The breakfast burrito is a LOT of cheese and not much else in the flavor department. Any breakfast burrito gets the job done for me but it left something to be desired. The lemon poppyseed pancakes with blueberry compote sounded so good in the description but were not as special as they seemed. Overall a really average to below average spot in my experience. If I ever end up trying again I will hope that I can leave a more glowing review, but I will stick with my normal breakfast spot moving forward (shout-out Breakfast House!) read more

Just LOOK at this spread oh my word! These pictures are from 2 separate trips (both times I ordered the Banana-Coconut Oatmeal pancakes--because they are just so good!!) Coffee was delicious, and the service was super friendly. If a manager is reading this, Arturo deserves a shout out for being so kind and welcoming to his guest!! Tried the Breakfast Wrap, Starving Student, Honey Ricotta French Toast, Mini Buttermilk Pancakes, Blueberry Pancakes, Lumberjack Skillet, and House Potatoes. Unfortunately most of the items were just ok. The lowlights: overcooked and hard-to-chew bacon, overcooked and oily scrambled eggs, bland honey ricotta french toast/breakfast sandwich/house potatoes, and not enough meat on the Lumberjack Skillet. The highlights: very fast delivery (I think we used DoorDash), and the delicious buttermilk pancakes! Would definitely order the buttermilk pancakes again, but unfortunately can't recommend anything else. read more

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,  and at Stax Cafe it's treated with reverence. A new addition to the increasing restaurant scene at river west, this place knows breakfast. The extensive menu guarantees to have something for everyone: from fresh juices, pancakes, omelets, crepes, french toast, frittata, eggs Benedict with various fillings such as the prosciutto and avocado.... I find the place casual but somehow modern and elegant with a tropical feel. They have an outdoor patio for those who prefer to eat al fresco. The triangular shape of the space is perfect for people watching, and the sidewalks on two sides give the feel of a sidewalk cafe while sitting within the restaurant property. The inside is tastefully decorated with wire hanging, old style lighting bulbs below the orange lattices that hang from the ceiling. The pancake recipe on the wall is a nice touch, as if to say: we have nothing to hide, this is what we serve. The almost floor to ceiling windows that surrounds the restaurant allows natural light to filter to every table. And don't forget the floor; yes, the three color floor is also part of the decor. I went here on opening day and the opening hour, on a week day. The place was about 25 percent full but I don't expect this to be the case on the weekends. For my taste, this is a five stars rating restaurant,  but I will withhold a star for my following visit and the following reasons: - The omelet was a little over cooked for my taste. - the hollandaise sauce on the Benedict was lumpy and lacked taste. I will blame those shortcomings on opening day, hopefully it is not their style, but I won't hesitate to give those dishes another try; and so should you, after all it's a matter of taste, and the only taste that counts is your own. read more

I went here for their soft opening and went back the next day for their grand opening in order to make a fair review. I am a big fan of their food, they really know how to do breakfast right. There are so many choices that, you can come here many times and get something every time, and each time will be just as delicious as the last. We had the braised beef brisket benedict (sauteed with celery, carrots, & onions, with poached eggs & hollandaise sauce on an english muffin) with house potatoes, and the half pound angus burger (with lettuce, tomato, onion, pepper bacon, cheddar & tomato jam) with a side of fries on the first day. The braised beef brisket benedict was the favorite, and the half pound angus burger was a close 2nd. On the second day, we had the prosciutto avocado benedict (two poached eggs & hollandaise sauce on an english muffin) with house potatoe,s and the meat wagon (chorizo, fire roasted tomatoes, poblano, queso fresco, topped with pico de gallo & chipotle. Both entrees are very popular and are served with house potatoes. Both are really good, again the prosciutto avocado benedict was the favorite. Try the strawberry and orange juice, it's almost too pretty to drink! Really loved the decor, it's a modern, bright, open space with an outdoor patio. I would've given this restaurant 5 stars, except for one exception. When we sat down on their opening day, I turned my coffee mug around and it had lipstick on it! It was there before I got there. This was within the first hour on the first day that they were open to the public. Our waiter changed my coffee mug for me, but, this is not something I would expect from any restaurant, let alone a new one. read more

Have been coming here a lot! This may be my new go to breakfast place. The bloody Mary's are amazing, comes in a wine glass topped with a waffle, olive, pickle, bacon and mozzarella. I made mine spicy and it was perfect. I have tried a few things, Nutella crepe, veggie skillet, and mini egg tacos. So far my favorite is the egg tacos, I will be getting those everytime. My experience would have been great if it wasn't for the manager. I expressed to my waiter that I didnt care for my mimosa so he went and got the manager. Before I could say much of anything he began treating me as if I was irate and belligerent or causing a scene (which I wasn't AT ALL). Not once did I ASK for my mimosa flight to be comped but when a customer is dissatisfied you don't treat them as if they're a criminal for speaking up. Owner was brought out and he handled the situation much better (which was no longer about mimosas but his managers behavior). That ruined my our entire experience. read more

Came here for brunch with our Dineit4ward coupon book, and got their braised beef brisket hash with a side of pancakes, and the wild mushroom and swiss crepe. The brisket hash was a bit dry, but otherwise flavorful. There were way too many potatoes though, and would have been better if you could have substituted for a different side. They have some pretty unique menu items, so I'd recommend going if you want one of those, but otherwise this restaurant isn't too memorable or special. I ordered delivery through Postmates and got the Monte Cristo Sandwich with a side of turkey and pork sausage. I thought it was super creative to have waffles instead of bread in this sammie, but it didn't necessarily live up to expectations. The egg was beautifully runny and I thought it added great flavor, but overall the entire meal felt a bit bland. The pork sausage helped a lot, and I thought it was a step above the turkey sausage. I also enjoyed the potatoes, especially the onion and peppers mixed in. Personally, I don't think I'd order the Monte Cristo again, I'd probably stick with something like French toast or pancakes. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to trying this place again, but I'd probably rather order elsewhere. read more

The Restaurant: Stax Cafe is a well sized restaurant that felt like it was influenced by old style diners. I came on a Friday morning during a work week, so I can't really speak to how busy it can get here, but there is quite a large amount of seating. The actual dishes are pretty massive and we weren't able to even finish 2 dishes with 3 people and had a lot of extra food. The menu is quite large with a ton of different sections. It's a little bit much to navigate at first, so I would recommend that you try and look at the menu first to choose what you want so you aren't overwhelmed Recommendations: 1) Lumberjack Skillet - This is just a good skillet with solid sized pieces of potato that were crispy and delicious. The meat on it was perfectly cooked and added a ton of flavor, and the cheese added the extra punch of flavor that you needed. The eggs were standard scrambled eggs and were great additions, but not the star of the dish. The potatoes and meat really were exceptional. Would get again: 1) Skirt Steak and Eggs - My biggest issue with the dish was the the steak was pretty overcooked. We had ordered it medium and it came well done, which made it pretty chewey. The actual flavor of the steak was great and the Chimichurri sauce was what added a lot of great flavor to the steak and the potatoes and veggies were crispy and delicious. Definitely would get again and hope that the steak is better. 2) Mini Waffles - The waffles were good and crispy and had solid flavor. I don't think they were out of this world, but they were good waffles. 3) Mini Pancakes - The pancakes were fluffy and good along with solid flavor. Just like the waffles, I didn't think they were out of this world, but they were solid pancakes. Overall, this was a good experience, but I don't know if this will be my #1 choice for brunch moving forward. read more

I always go to the other location for Stax. We were headed to another spot and decided to check out the newer location. We saw some of the same staff from Taylor Location. This location had so much more room and even a waiting area. They also have alcoholic drinks (little pricey). The menu is the same and still delicious. read more
