Mom and I were back in NJ to visit friends in Colts Neck, where I grew up. After staying in a hotel in Lincroft and visiting the old home, we were looking for a breakfast place and stumbled across Stax in Marlboro. Once we were seated quickly by a friendly young woman, it all went downhill. It was a beautiful day so we asked to be seated outside. We waited forever for a waitress, who ended up being very nice, but everything took a ridiculous amount of time. One reason for this is that the waitresses have to circle around the back or the front of the building, go inside and obtain whatever the diner wants, then circle back outside. Nothing is at a convenient serving station outdoors. Our waitress finally brought our coffee, then asked if we wanted milk/cream. Yes, please...so we wait another bit for her to return with our cream (why didn't she bring cream and a sweetener selection when she brought our coffee?). She walks away and we open our roll-up to find there is no spoon inside. We wait some more till we catch a glimpse of our waitress. Can we get spoons? Wait some more, but coffee starts cooling down, so we stir coffee with knives (PS - what breakfast place doesn't have a spoon in the roll up???). She comes back after another eternity with two spoons wrapped up in a napkin in her apron pocket - one spoon is disgustingly dirty. Not exaggerating. So we were glad we stirred with our knives. Mom tastes the coffee and decides it does need sweetener. We wait until we have another sighting of our waitress...you get the idea. NEVER got an offer of a refill for coffee. I finally ordered the avocado toast and two scrambled eggs. When the food finally came I was surprised to see the eggs were piled on the ONE PIECE OF TOAST on my plate, so the toast was soggy. And, honestly, there was a barely discernable film of avocado on the toast and under the eggs. And calling it a "film" is being generous. Virtually no avocado on the avocado toast. All for a whopping $9 for the toast alone. Let that sink in. Nine dollars for ONE piece of toast with a whisper of avocado. The eggs cost extra! I'm not a big cheapskate, but COME ON! For nine bucks I expected two nice pieces of sourdough bread with at least one whole beautiful avocado slightly mashed - half on each slice of toast -- and some nice seasoning on top of that AND perhaps even one of the eggs. If our experience was "typical" (and I suspect that it is), I don't know what kind of sane person would ever eat here more than once. The irony is that I lived in Greenville, SC for 15 years and there is a series of diners in Greenville called Stax (e.g. Stax Original, Stax Omega), owned by the Stathakis family. Incredible breakfast food, plenty of it, cooked well, reasonably priced, served by seasoned professionals. I read the positive reviews on YELP for the Marlboro Stax and wonder if perhaps these people were giving reviews of the Stax restaurants in SC in error. Bottom line: save your money and go to a classic NJ diner or bagel place instead. We wish we had! I'm still reeling from the overpriced fiasco that was Stax of Marlboro, NJ. I've been here quite a bit and I love their menu. Their servers are fantastic, friendly and accommodating! When I first started going the food was excellent. They have unique choices and everything I tried was delicious. So why 4 stars? The last few times I went the food was not the same. On one visit I had the Prime sandwich - basically a steak sandwich. It was very fatty and grizzly to the point where I couldn't eat it. Another visit, I had breakfast. My pancakes were really over cooked and dry and the coffee was cold. I understand many restaurants are having issues with staffing their kitchens and maybe that it the cause for the difference. I'll give it one more try, hopefully it will be better. Like I said, it was always really, really good. It was just the last few times that it was not up to par and a bit disappointing. read more

We went to Stax for breakfast and it's only ok. Ordered pancakes called Strawberry Fields. The menu description says cheesecake pancakes topped with strawberries and whipped cream. No whipped cream! One or two fresh strawberries were diced to sit on top of three pancakes. A creamy sauce was drizzled on them and if it's supposed to taste like cheesecake it didn't. For $15 skip it. The other meal was eggs over easy and when she put it on the table she goes we're still trying to locate your rye bread toast! Huh? It arrived late and the eggs weren't as hot by then. Another cup of coffee would've been nice with the meal but she wasn't paying attention to us and considering there was one other occupied table lol there's no excuse for being neglected! We've been here several times and really like the food and the servers are always friendly. This last time though our server got overwhelmed as it got busy quickly, and it took awhile to get our food. The manager noticed, apologized, and made it right. Such a good marker of a well-run place. Mistakes happen, but it's how the establishment responds that really matters. Nothing to rave about. We went on a Saturday brunch/lunch. We got seated immediately, but waited another 10-15 minutes for our waitress to come. No one offered us water or asked what we wanted to drink.. mind you, there's a good amount of staff behind the bar area. We ordered our food and it took about 35 mins for it arrive. We also noticed that tables with 3+ people take longer for the food to arrive. One of the items we ordered was the The Prime burger... the meat we got was inedible. No one ever stopped by to check in on us or how the food was. This is probably the first and last time at this place. read more

Horrible service. Half my meal never even came. Waiter ignored us never even came to check or give refills . When waiter came to bring check told him my pancakes never even came he said "oh they didn't", and that was it. Will not be coming back. Wait staff are given too many tables and they cannot handle the volume and because of this neglect the tables they have. Check on your tables, don't just stare at them! read more

My 2nd visit .... Where do I start! Waited a bit for waitress. No offer of water or drinks to begin.... We ordered foster french toast. Asked for sauce on side. It was a terrible site 3 small pieces ! A tiny cup of sliced bananas maybe 4 thinly sliced in sauce .... What a terrible presentation. I can't believe what a small portion for the $$ was not worth the $$. My cappuccino was Luke warm when I finally got it.... No straws for water everything needed to be asked for sugar too! Atmosphere is nice but menu is not worth $$. Don't think this place will last... fix your skimpy menu & be creative when you present the dish ! read more

New establishment, as of now my recent visits have been quite nice, nothing wrong. Prices aren't far off the dot, creativity is there, the service is good, the interior shows character. I look forward to going there a couple more times to cement my review. As of now I encourage all people to stop here for a breakfast/brunch date, coffee, or just a relaxing early morning dining experience. Four of us went for brunch, and all had omelettes. They were fine, but no better than at any diner in the area. We were impressed that we were given the choice of salad instead of potatoes. The disappointing factors that the rye toast was more like marble colored white bread, and the bagel seemed to be Lender's. We live in central NJ -- there is no shortage of fabulous bagels and bread! I must say that the pancakes and waffles looked incredible, but if you are going for omelettes, go somewhere else. read more

I can't believe I just paid $15 for plain roast beef on a bun the Mill Roaster sandwich is absolutely disgusting. I put a small amount of the jus on the sandwich and it was overwhelmingly salty. I could only eat a few bites. They should take this off the menu or lower the price to $8 because it's definitely not a $15 sandwich. read more

We had the best experience at Stax this morning! Beautiful space, everyone was so friendly and the food was amazing! I had a delicious broccoli cheddar omelette with home fries and rye toast and my husband had "The Jersey Classic," pork roll, egg, and cheese on a brioche roll with home fries. Poor service! We waited over 45 minutes for a simple breakfast dish. When asked on the status we kept being told it's being prepared. We watched them prepare over 60 "to-go" orders and other bigger tables before we finally got our food. The FOOD WAS COLD! When i addressed it the young red head waitress rolled her eyes and told the hostess to "deal with them". Oh yea? We walked out! This little breakfast/brunch/lunch place does not disappoint. The roasted eggplant with quinoa is so delicious that I ordered it for a second time. My friends ordered the salmon salad and kept saying it was so good. The plate presentation is amazing and the service outstanding. We were not rushed at all and our server was very friendly. This is another one of those new places that try to be trendy. First of all, make sure you park in a spot that allows parking for Stax, cause all the front and side spots are labeled! Never saw anything like this before. The decor is nice but again, trying to hard to be trendy. Place was clean. Waitress was nice, friendly, and fairly quick. Food was average at best. We were a group of four, two of us ordering custom made omelettes , one avocado toast, and one specialty pancake. Nothing blew us away, and honestly, breakfast at any of the Route 9 diners from Marlboro to Freehold is better and less expensive. Coffee was ok but had to wait forever for refills. Decided to have brunch here with my son since I've been meaning to try it out. Went inside and asked for outdoor seating which we promptly got seated. The staff especially our waitresses (one was in training) were extremely nice and welcoming. Customer service wise, I'd give our waitresses a 5 star. Food wise, I give it a 3-3.5 star: I ordered a cold brew and a Stax Benny and for my son, he had the silver dollar pancakes. My son enjoyed his fluffy pancakes. My Stax Benny was ok - probably not something I'll order again though since it seemed kinda small compared to other places I've had it at and I've have had better at other places too. When I say small - I'm comparing it to places where the Canadian bacon and the egg is the same size as the English muffin below. The muffin here seem to be much bigger than the rest. But it was still filling. Wish there was a bit more hollandaise sauce. The home fries were good. Cold brew was ok. read more

Until today, oatmeal for breakfast has always been something I occasionally ate because I wanted to stay healthy. Huge shout out to Stax for blowing me away with a bowl of oatmeal (officially "Neenies Overnight Oats") unlike anything I've ever had. Wish I had taken a picture as it looked as good as it tasted. The staff was very kind but I am not going to this place again because I waited an hour for some scrambled eggs. I was astonished by how many people came in after me and left before I even got my food. Although the food was very tasty and the scrambled eggs had the perfect amount of fluff, if you're starving, this is the place to go if you wanna get hangry. First time to Stax. The place is amazing and the waitresses were fantastic, very sweet and helpful with the menu and great conversations too. Everything on the menu looked good, but, I the fried chicken and waffle. Let me start of by saying it came out and looked delicious. The presentation was on point. Sadly the plate was cold, and the waffle wasn't hot and slightly hard. The chicken was very good but could have used more syrup. It was hoping for that sweet and savory but only got savory. The dish also came with a side of fries but they were over cooked, hard and cold...not worth eating. Since the atmosphere was really good and the workers were amazing I give the waitresses 5 stars but overall the food was just 3 stars. I will try it again and try one of their fan favorites. Also I would like to add that the bathrooms are very clean and the overall cleanliness of the place is spotless. read more
