We had a few recommendations for this place, so we figured we'd give it a shot for our anniversary dinner. We always dress well to go to dinner, but this was yet another place where people in shorts made an appearance, although most were dressed for dinner. Good start with their version of a black Manhattan. When I started to ask how big of a cut was in the "Steak 38 for Two", I was immediately told they were out of that cut. After some debate and discussion, we both decided on a filet; hers with Bernaise, and blue cheese encrusted for him. I confused the waiter when I asked if they do rare plus, so I just went medium rare. So we started with the lost art of a tableside Caesar salad. There's definitely something in the taste to that preparation. Uneven pacing. Slow up front but steaks came quickly after the salad. Onto the steaks. On cut they initially appeared okay, but my blue cheese overwhelmed the bland filet. We both agreed they were a touch overdone, bland, and not filet tender. While they gave you sides, we ordered a separate side of mushrooms. All that with tip and you're approaching other unnamed top-end steakhouses in the area cost with nowhere near as good of a steak. Not annoying or terrible, but we don't need to come back. read more

Staek 38 is located beneath a very unassuming motel. I was immediately greeted at the (free) valet, which was a nice touch. I had a reservation & did not have to wait. Sam was our waiter & he was great. He even does a little serenade for each table. He did seem to be the only waiter for the entire restaurant & although it isn't that big, we did have to wait some time before our order was taken. We had the tableside Ceasar salad for our app & it was delicious. If they had actual big parmesan pieces in lieu of the grated option, it would have been perfect! I ordered the crab cakes they had as a special & they were PEFFECTION!!! Full of jumbo lumps & flavorful! My dining companion ordered an espresso crusted steak that was also a special & that was pretty good too!!! I would definitely recommend Steak 38!! read more

Don't be fooled by the outside, once inside Steak 38 has a wonderful lounge feel with great moody lighting. Our waiter even sang to us and other guests, keeping the mood light and everyone laughing. My new favorite spot. There's a Cherry Hill group on facebook that had a 75% this place is great/25% not a fan sort of commentary. Any sort of negative feedback just had to do with the odd location, it feels out of place with how good it is and I'm kind of into that. There's still a wait/reservations are helpful, but if the surrounding building let's me get a table I'm all about it. We've been twice now in month, 5 stars both times. Service is great, cocktails are reasonably priced and tasty (aviation is great if you like gin and cherry liquor), and there's a little theater with some of the dishes/drinks prepared table side. I've had the 14oz filet Royale twice now, best steak I've had in a decade. My wife had the steak Dianne and usually prefers minimal sauce but devoured it. We took my mother the second time for a special occasion to let her know she was going to become a grandmother and she had a Porterhouse that was very good. Odd to say that the accompanying green beans are a stand out but they are. I'm not as big of a desert person but the carrot cake is enormous and fantastic, I had a few bites. Solid solid place, busy when we were there on a Friday. They had someone crooning ratpack standards which added some novelty and charm to a place we already liked. We'll be back soon. read more

Been to both locations (Cherry Hill and Tabernacle). Cherry Hill is more of an old fashioned look inside (don't be bothered by the fact it is attached to a cheap motel) and Tabernacle is more modern. Either one you will need reservations and both have valet parking. It is needed in Tabernacle, as parking is limited. Both the food and service were excellent. read more

We all drive by here and think, huh?!?! So one day I just drove in after running errands on a Saturday evening. I sat at the bar and had a fantastic dinner. I go out alone a lot. Some places are great as a female solo diner some not great. This was a fantastic experience. From entering and the greeting from the hostess to grabbing a seat at the bar and diving into the menu. Started with a dirty Tito's martini and bacon wrapped scallops. They were excellent. All the bacon was crispy no undercooked bacon on the under carriage or anything. Then on to the main event. I did their smaller rib eye, with bacon jam and a side of mushrooms. It was fantastic! Cooked perfectly. The next time I would get the bacon jam on the side it was a lot and on the sweet side. My husband and I came for an early Valentine's dinner date. It was our first time but we heard many good things. It was very easy to make a reservation. It had a great vibe and all the staff was so friendly and helpful. We had perfect service all night. We loved the tableside experiences. My husband is an old-fashioned snob, and he ordered the smoke show, and this was the first place that's ever made the drink right at our table. We also did the banana foster dessert, and it was awesome to watch, and it tasted delicious. My husband loved his steak. I got the Steak Diane, but I wasn't a fan. I didn't really like the cut of meat or the sauce. Although the mashed potatoes were garlicky deliciousness. I also had the French onion soup, and omg, it was the best I've ever had! Bra-VO Steak 38.....*slow clap* Steak 38 is a decepticon. Basically attached to a skeevy budget motel, behind an even skeevier not so budget hotel, Steak 38 is a place that, if you are from this area, you have driven by literally a thousand times. When we pulled up, we didn't even know where to park, the location of this place is so bad. Seriously, I went back and forth between giving this place 4 and FIVE STARS, but the location of this place is horrendous, and is really the only major thing dragging it down. That said, I ABSOLUTELY recommend it. Onward with the review. Thanks to Yelp, Steak 38's name popped up as a very good steakhouse, with less than Capital Grille type prices. So, for my pre-birthday dinner, we booked an early reservation on a Saturday night. (5pm rezy, as we were beholden to the baby sitter. This will matter in a second.) Upon arriving, and driving around in literal circles for 10 minutes looking for somewhere to park, we headed in to see what the real skinny was. I should point out, there is plenty of space to park there, and they even have a friggin' valet, but again, we were like, "CAN we park here? Or here? Or there? Is that for the motel? Is that valet legit? What is going on here?!" Once inside, the first impression was less than stellar. It's dark (like most steak houses,) but it was EMPTY. There was maybe 2 people at the bar, and a hostess at the stand. That's it. Uh oh......we inform them of our reservation, and they seat us near the back of the dining room, where I see another usual harbinger of doom; salt and pepper shakers on the table. (As I mentioned before, according to Gordon Ramsey, salt and pepper on the tables is a bad sign, as the food should be seasoned properly before leaving the kitchen.) We're not off to a BAD start per say, but I'm definitely wondering if we've made the right choice. Things start to turn around immediately, as the busser drops off bread and water lickety split, and we get to meet 1 of our TWO servers, Tom. Tom was a gem. Sounded like Casey Kasem, if you're old enough to get that reference. He starts us off with some wine orders and we're on our way. For food, the Misses gets the crab cake value special; (side bar, if you're sat before 5:30, there is basically a happy hour menu! Hooray!) which came with soup, (she doubled down and got the crab soup), and I went with the 14 ounce rib eye, with the "royal topping," which is a demi glaze with portobellos and jumbo lump crab meat.....hmmm....we really went in on these poor crabs....). The soup comes out, and I found it to be INCREDIBLY salty, and the Misses found a few pieces of cartilage in it. (At least you know they are using REAL crab....*shoulder shrug emoji*). Ok, a slight step backwards, but they redeemed themselves with this next tidbit; our second server, Nicole, comes over and I ask if I can order a drink from her. (Of course I can!) I order a "boulivardier," which is an order I save for only fancy steak joints because A) no one has ever heard of it, and B) it's pretentious as shit to say out loud. Most places, including the fancy schmancy Library II, have no idea what it is, so if the bartender knows it, it's an extra 100 points to House Gryfindoor. She comes back with my libation, and NOW we're cooking. Within a reasonable amount of time, our mains come out, and we get to grubbing. The steak is great, and the "twice baked potatoes," which I've seen get slandered in other reviews, looked suspiciously like regular mashed potatoes, piped onto the plate, but that's fine with me either way. The royal topping is CRAZY RICH, but in a very good, decadent way. No complaints about the entrees; they cooked my steak to a perfect medium, and I had no use for the table salt and pepper shakers. Throughout the meal, Tom and Nicole were present, without being obtrusive, and my wife offhandedly mentioned to Nicole that we were basically out for the first time in months after having our baby. (We also started to notice tables filling up around us, including a fantastic couple next to us that said they come here all the time.) At this point, the manager, Jay, comes over to press the flesh, thank us for coming, and to make sure everything was good. It was at this point that I finally noticed a real, old school, Goodfellas-y vibe from Steak 38. I mean that in a good way. Its really like a place that you'd go with your crew to be super comfortable and relaxed, be treated with respect, and to have a kick ass steak to boot.Jay mentions that he heard we just had a baby, and would like to offer us a complimentary bananas foster for the occasion. Tom rolls his cart up, and gets to whipping up and flambaying a DELICIOUS bananas foster tableside for us to cap off the meal. We got a gift card to go here, to which I never even knew this place existed. When we pulled in I thought we were at the wrong place cause it's attached to a motel. When you walk in, it's definitely a 80's vintage vibe, like a scene out of Goodfella's. Our server Sam was amazing through the whole dinner. We got mussels and french onion soup to start, which were great. The Caesar salad prepared table side was delicious. Where things took a turn for the worst was with the Steak 38 for two. They poured this hot broth over your two cut pieces of filet that literally took it from medium to well done in seconds. Both my husband and I agreed the filet tasted like pot roast.. stringy, lacked flavor. I spit mine out in my napkin. The string beans were garlic heavy and the mashed potatoes were bland. Caesar salad made at the table was a delightful return to days when that was something a number of restaurants used to do. Very good and as tasteful as a Caesar salad can be. My Salmon with horseradish sauce was excellent and my wife's steak Diane was cooked to perfection. The wine was was also above par. The banana Foster is a must have dessert. Service was excellent, and the rose given to the ladies on Valentines Day, a beautiful touch. The location is odd as it sits by a motel but after reading the reviews I had to try it and am glad I finally did. I had the ribeye and it was the 2nd best steak I ever had. To be fair the best I ever had was in Texas. My wife had crab cakes and they were also amazing. Both meals came with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. The staff was attentive and kind and didn't over do their appearances as many tend to at restaurants. The atmosphere was filled with a nice ambiance. Lighting was dimmed but not too dark. Many pics of the rat pack along the walls. Nice bar and even a fireplace. Truly a wonderful experience. I will not wait another 6 years to enjoy Steak38 again. read more

If the restaurant offered takeout and this was a takeout order, I probably would've given it zero stars. The ambiance was cool. They had live music. The waiters were really nice and funny. That's where one star comes from. The next star comes from the oysters. Awesome oysters. As for the three missing stars (the food), we went here for our anniversary and were disappointed. We came here on the recommendation of a friend and the south jersey food scene Facebook group. We felt like this food was cooked for somebody who lost their taste buds and needed extra everything. The truffle fries were way too salty. The steak Diane was smothered with this sauce. which was very bitter. I'm not sure if it was from the peppercorns, or if they cooked it with alcohol, but there was something wrong with it where something wasn't cooked out properly. It ruined the filet that the sauce was paired with. My boyfriend got the 14 ounce fillet mignon. It was coated with some type of seasoning and then seared on all sides. It made for a gritty outside texture that we didn't like. I feel like a good cut of filet just needs salt and pepper and doesn't need anything extra. The bottom of the steak was also black. And not just a little black like the whole thing was black like they forgot about it. The green beans were absolutely smothered in garlic which made it overwhelming to eat. The Caesar salad was OK. Nothing special. The mashed potatoes were OK as well. The mac & cheese was like a white cheddar mac & cheese with a cavatappi pasta. Our whole dinner ended up costing around $200 with a $40 tip. We didn't take any of our leftover steak, green beans, mashed potatoes home. Just disappointed that for a really expensive steak House that the food didn't show up for it. Last night we had dinner at Steak 38 to celebrate my son's birthday. It was fabulous. Our server was Samantha and she was incredible. She was very pleasant, energetic and efficient. Our food was all delicious and perfectly prepared. We had been there once before for another birthday and we all remembered how delicious the bruschetta was. It is the best that any of us have ever tasted. I seriously could have eaten an order of the bruschetta as my meal, it was that good. The cocktails were all excellent and generous amounts. It's disappointing to order a cocktail and when you get it, its all ice. The drinks in the martini glasses were filled to the rim. The room we were in was beautiful and I'm not always easy to please, but I truly enjoyed everything about our dinner at Steak 38. We will be back soon. read more

The restaurant had a dark funhouse mirror feel. The calamari was so heavily breaded that they were more like calamari coins, but the sauce was good. I unfortunately couldn't eat any part of my entree because everything -potatoes, green beans, and steak all had so much garlic in it. I only found literally 5 bites of meat in my steak diane. You essentially get a plate of mushrooms for $50. The crab cake had a lot of tomato which we didn't feel mixed well with the crab. It's a good thing my martini was delicious and strong. read more

Had the most perfect dinner experience here tonight. I didn't know what to expect based on the outside vibe and location, but the moment I walked in I realized that this place is a seriously cool vibe. My first visit was as a skeptic as I passed this place a thousand times, but since it was attached to a motel, I figured it can't be that good, but boy was I wrong: The old saying that you can't judge a book by its cover holds true in this rustic step back in time deco playing Frank Sinatra while we dined. Our reservations and seating were right on the money, and the Absolute Vodka Martini was fantastic, as was the service from start to finish. The filet for 2 was juicy , filling, and cooked to perfection. I had to go back and try again, and this time was even better, from the greeting at the door, to the service at the table, Great wine selections, a nice menu variety, and super friendly staff, and diners alike. I took my family to Steak 38 in Cherry Hill for my mother's birthday. I made reservations the day before. we were seated in the corner at a round table. now, I've taken my mother to Steak 38 last year for her birthday and it was ok. the food last year was amazing. Well, when we were seated, it took about 10-15 minutes for someone to greet us. I thought he was our waiter so I began to place my order and he said "oh, no one came to take your order yet? I guess I can do that." so we put our orders in, the food came from a different waiter, then was asked immediately before I could taste my food, "How is everything?" after that waiter left, my daughters wanted more bread, so I had to ask a waitress walking by for more, almost as if it was a big deal. But my main issue was that no one had come to ask if we wanted anything else, how was the food (since I was able to finally try a little bit of everything we got). The creamed spinach was so salty I could not eat it. It just was a disappointing experience. It felt like the staff just did not care. Then another waiter came to say "Ok, boxes... 2". The fastest service we received was getting our boxes and the check. My boyfriend took me there back in 2023 and everything was phenomenal! From seeing the flambéing of the bananas foster table side (by other couples and the salad being prepared for a couple next to us). It just seemed the experience we had last year and the experience we had tonight (tonight was the worst I've had here) was just not worth coming out to Steak 38. read more

Restaurant week is always a great time to try somewhere new or somewhere you haven't been to in a very long time. The latter fits me. Of all the restaurant options for restaurant week they had the menu that spoke to me the most. I started with the oyster Rockefeller which smelled fishy but did not taste fishy unfortunately they didn't have much flavor at all. The crab soup I found to be rich and creamy however another person at the table felt it tasted salty that was not my opinion. I decided to get the lobster which I felt was a nice size tail split in half and had a nice flavor more on the lines of a scampi then francaise. I did try a friend's filet mignon and even with only one bite I could tell that it was cooked and seasoned just right. I can't say enough good things about Steak 38. My boyfriend & I came for our 5 year anniversary (which I noted in the "special occasion" section of the reservation. We were greeted with "Happy Anniversary" from several staff members and given complimentary glasses of champagne. The cocktails we ordered were delicious & the food & service were wonderful. Robby & Joe made the night so wonderful. The table side caesar salad was a game changer for my boyfriend who isn't a big salad person but was practically licking his plate clean. Well this is certainly a "don't judge a book by it's cover" type of place. My boyfriend wanted a nice steak dinner for his birthday and I let him choose the spot this time. When we pulled up to a Motel, to say that I was a bit floored was an understatement but I kept my mouth shut because it was his birthday pick. Up until we got through the front door, I wasn't convinced. However, as soon as we stepped through the door, I was thrilled. You walk in and it's like you've gone back in time to sounds of Frank Sinatra, a tasteful mirrored wall and a bartender in a vest. It was a welcome surprise for sure. The hostess was not present when we first walked in but the bartender was willing to seat us and was extremely pleasant. We were seated in a back corner that was intimate and perfect. On to the food! The warm bread and rosemary, garlic butter was literally out of this world. We ordered calamari to start and I wish we went with the mussels. The breading on the calamari was bland but they were warm, as was the marinara. I ordered the crab scampi and the portion size was a bit small (perhaps it was so good I just wanted more) but the quantity and quality of crab was the best that I've ever had. It was not shredded up and hidden in the sauce. They were true jumbo chunks that were delicious. My bf had the surf and turf with the garlic topping and the bacon jam on the side. The steak was perfectly medium rare, seared to perfection. The bacon jam was the most unique thing I've ever tasted. It was like breakfast on steak. Not my jazz at all but A+ for creativity. My boyfriend loved it. The lobster was slightly disappointing in comparison. The lobster was huge which was a plus and wonderfully cooked, tender and not dry but it was very bland. It was almost like the water it was boiled in sucked out the flavor - perhaps just a bit a salt in the water could have helped. Lastly, the bananas foster was a delight. It was made table side with a massive flame and it was perfect. The service we received was terrific. Our waiter was warm and attentive and the owner (I presume) greeted us, which was so pleasant and rarely happens these days. Everyone who was working or not seated had a mask. The vibe at this restaurant is one that is sorely missed. I love the authenticity. It was nice to have dinner at a nice spot that isn't a chain. I do have to note that one set patrons loudly expressed their opinions about the recent elections. As off putting the comments were, the owner who was conversing with them, reacted in a neutral way that I respected and really was a deciding factor on if I would return. We had an AMAZING experience at Steak 38 tonight for my birthday dinner! It was our first time visiting, as we have heard great things about it for some time now - but in the past have always just driven right by as the outside can be very deceiving! I loved the energy and vibe of the restaurant - dark and swanky, not too noisy, but energetic enough to create a great vibe. I loved that the waitstaff was not too stiff as I often find to be the case in most upscale steakhouses. Very professional and quite honest - perfect - service all evening. We loved our tableside experiences - which we received for our Caesar salads and our bananas foster dessert. I ordered the strip steak topped with the black truffle butter. My steak was cooked perfectly and the steak was accompanied with mashed potatoes and green beans which were excellent. It is rare for a steakhouse to include a potato and vegetable with the steak - most of the time the sides are ordered a la carte - so this was a great deal. In addition I ordered a side of mushrooms and the Mac and cheese because I couldn't resist. The potato and veggie that came with the steak would have been more than enough but because gluttony is my middle name I had to experience that perfect bite combo of the Mac & cheese, a mushroom and a bite of steak - literally to die for!!! My family ordered the steak Diane also which they loved. What really made this an A+ experience was that I had indicated in my Open Table reservation that it was for a birthday. Most of the time restaurants do not take note of this. But you better believe Steak 48 was on top of it! The waiter brought up the birthday and when our guy came to do our tableside bananas foster he came bearing a candle for my birthday celebration. He led the table in singing happy birthday - while slightly embarrassing, this really tickled my 10 year old nephew who was loving the entertainment and made for a very special birthday celebration! And to top off this amazing experience our waiter comped the birthday bananas fosters! I have never had a restaurant do that before! I was very impressed with the food but I just really was not feeling the ambiance outside nor inside. The steak was very good and cooked to how I like it and the mashed potatoes were so good. I heard great things about this place and it did not disappoint. Appetizers- bacon wrapped scallops, never have it this good! The bacon was so crispy and the scallop was perfectly cooked. Main- my husband got the lobster bisque so good. I started off with a Caesar salad, this was the only disappointing part of the meal. The menu said Caesar salads were made table side, mine wasn't. It wasn't a creamy Caesar dressing. I was hoping for creamy and garlicky, big flavor it was meh. We both ordered the filet Royale- so good cooked perfectly. Disappointed with the rib eye steaks. Our party of 6 ordered 3 16oz ribeyes which were not prepared as requested. One especially was overdone and tough. The waiter, Dan, was very good and comped us for the one steak and added in a cocktail comp as well. Snapper soup was exceptional according to the 3 diners who had it. Table side Caesar salad was ok but on the dry side due to a lack of dressing. We shared a well made Bananas Foster which is also prepared table side. However early this morning I woke with diarrhea and vomiting which is never a good thing after eating at a restaurant. We won't be going back. read more

We really enjoyed our anniversary dinner there. Our waitress Rochelle was delightful. She surprised us with two glasses of champagne and started our meal off with a celebratory toast. The table side Caesar salad was very good. Our steaks were cooked to perfection and the cocktails were excellent. The service was on another level. Steak 38 is a hidden gem. read more
