In it's world of greasy, tiny diners the Steak n Egger is A-OK! I was first attracted to this place when I read their slogan, "We doze... but never close." This reaffirmed the kind of diner attitude I know and love. The interior is small, featuring bar style dining which is tucked in by a single row of tables around the exterior. The entire establishment is lined with floor to ceiling windows boasting various breakfast bargains. These make it nice for viewing an industrial style landscape across Cermak. Everything is coated in a thin, iridescent layer of grease which has settled from years of exposed cooking. It's loud, bright and hot. The shouting of patrons is often in competition with the white noise of the television. The breakfast is sub-par. I judge every good diner breakfast by the hashbrowns and these are mushy and lifeless. However I love the mushroom burger with a side of spicy fries! The spicy fries are heavenly. The staff is sometimes on turtle speed, but they are always friendly, in a scary "I could fuck you up" kind of way. My mother has been bringing me here since I was a child and as an adult I come every so often never have had an issues but today was horrible. New waitresses that I have never seen before were very rude. Purposely not waiting on customers so that they would leave. I walked in to take out there was 4 customers ahead of me. At no point did the waitresses even look our way they just kept walking past all of us like we weren't standing there. A group of older men (majority white) walks in about 10 min after we had been standing there still waiting to get our orders placed. They sit down and are immediately serviced menus and utensils. Meanwhile I'm still waiting to get my order placed. Eventually 2 of the take out customers leave. And I finally get my order taken after having to ask more than once. While I'm waiting on my food a group of younger blacks comes in and sits down. They get no menus or utensils they sat there and the waitress didn't even look their way. They ended up leaving after maybe 10 min. & for all those reasons I felt like the service was horrible. The food was great but not worth the hassle. read more

For a 24 hour place this place can be pretty forgetful. It took them more than 15 minutes to get the chocolate milkshake (lumps of chocolate that wasn't blended in well enough). They also forgot the toasts that supposedly came with the dinner. The food was mostly burnt and not impressive. The price was pretty average though. They have a lot of sauces on the table in case you need them. I should've opted to making a ramen instead of eating all this burnt food... The menu can be a bit confusing to some too. My friend had a sweet tooth so he ordered a pie ($2.49..+ $1.50 for a la mode). They offered lemon pie and we ended up seeing lemon cake.. not sure how it's deemed pie. They also have a small bathroom here. When the men's room is occupied and faucet is running there will be funny noises that will get you questioning or spooked. read more

I was a guest on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at approximately 2:00 a.m. I stopped eating at this establishment after having a pregnant roach crawl across my table. I informed the waitress that they had roaches as I was leaving and she didn't seem surprised at all. That ended my patronage of this establishment. Not only was the quantity of food generous for the price--felt like being back in Texas, instead of Chicago--the food was also excellent. But service was exceptional. The food is typical diner fare, although they do have turkey sausage which is nice, but it's the service that makes me love this place. I have never waited more than a minute or two for coffee and the food is always hot. I love this place soooo much!!!! Me and my boyfriend go in there every single weekend at least once. The owner/manager/whatever knows us and even gave us free t-shirts! He's so nice! We never get stuff for free or anything but we tip really well because all the waitresses are so sweet. I mean there's a few not so great ones but the majority are really sweet! We sit down and they bring us coffee. It's just great to get good breakfast food and good service. Oh, it's SUPER cheap too! The wait staff is super nice (although I think the one girl is always nice to me because she "likes guys with lip rings") and the food is great, as long as you recognize that it's in the diner category.
